ThinkFast: February 5, 2008

rlimbaugh.jpg

Yesterday, right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh spent his entire program trashing John McCain. Limbaugh said it is ludicrous for McCain to claim the mantle of national security. “The idea that we’ve only got one person in this whole roster of candidates, either party, who is willing to take on the war on terror is frankly, absurd,” he said.

Voters in 24 states will head to polls for today’s Super Tuesday, the “biggest primary day in U.S. history.” With 1,023 Republican and 1,681 Democratic delegates at stake, some election observers are worried about “chaos at the polling booths with malfunctioning machines and disputed results.”

The former chairman of Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell has called on the European Union to ban gas-guzzling cars, saying they are unnecessary. “Nobody needs a car that does 10-15 mpg,” Mark Moody-Stuart said.

Bush’s budget failed to provide any funding for the FOIA Ombudsman’s Office in the National Archives and Records Administration and attempts to shift the responsibilities of that office to the Department of Justice. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said that putting the DoJ in charge of transparency in government is a conflict of interest.

Attorney General Michael Mukasey reversed a 2003 decision barring a gay advocacy group from using “the e-mail, bulletin boards and meeting rooms at the Justice Department” and “issued a revised equal-employment-opportunity policy barring discrimination against any group.”

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) has placed a hold on the nomination of Mark Filip to be deputy attorney general” until Attorney General Mukasey answers questions on torture and detainee abuse cases “contained in three Durbin letters to the Justice Department dating back to 2005.”

Britain’s Prince Andrew, who is fourth in line to the throne, yesterday “launched a sharp attack” against President Bush for “failing to listen to Britain during the conflict in Iraq.” He added that since the Iraq war, Britons have been left with a “healthy skepticism” toward what is said in Washington.

Businesses that rely on seasonal workers are scrambling to fill positions, and some are shutting down, because there are fewer visas for the foreign workers who usually fill the jobs.”

President Bush’s budget, released yesterday, would slash funding for the Environmental Protection Agency “by $330 million from fiscal 2008 to $7.1 billion, with significant drops in spending on clean-water projects. The proposal calls for an overall decrease of almost $600 million from EPA spending in 2007 and the elimination of five programs.”

And finally: Craig Ferguson, host of The Late, Late Show on CBS, has been chosen as the entertainment for this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner. Ferguson seems to be a “middle ground” choice between last year’s performance by Rich Little — which was “dated and irrelevant” and Stephen Colbert in 2006 — who was too “edgy.” President Bush is “reportedly pleased” with the choice of Ferguson.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

    Good morning, campers.

It would be fun to see McJowls get the GOP nomination-just to watch Rush Limpdick explode. It WOULD be worth it.

    Uncle Ho & missmolly,
I'm enjoying the exposure hate radio is getting on this myself. Lush, Insannity, Savage & other hatemongers are showing their true colors.

Watching Limpballs' head explode would certainly be more entertaining than listening to him. Let's hope it's a chain reaction, and hate radio becomes the equivalent of the movie 'Scanners', where people's heads actually did explode.

Yesterday, right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh spent his entire program trashing John McCain.

I have to admit that it is a lot of fun watching the conservatives eat their own. What are all these talking heads going to do when McCain is the nominee? I suspect they will all have a "come to Jesus" moment and start loving McCain once he is their nominee. I can't see the lock-step lemming party turning on a Republican candidate in the long run, knowing that will guarantee a Democratic win.

Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said that putting the DoJ in charge of transparency in government is a conflict of interest.

You mean the DoJ that can't find it's ass with both hands? That one? The one that can't find millions of missing e-mails? The department that hosted 'Alberto's Follies'?
The only transparency DoJ exhibits is one of arrogance, Party allegiance, corporate favoritism and that dumb shit look when asked a question.

Thanks, Gonzo, you couldn't screw things up as bad as your Presidunce, but you sure gave it your all.

  13. bilbobaggins Says:

Voters in 24 states will head to polls for today’s Super Tuesday..

The more I learn about our system of nominating a candidate, the less I like it. In the end it looks like it will be the "Super Delegates" who will decide who our nominee will be, to hell with the people and how they voted. If nothing else we need to hold our primaries all on one day, the same as the general. It is ludicrous that small states like Iowa and New Hampshire have such a large part in choosing our candidates. Then we need to go to a popular vote, winner takes all. Then we truly will have a system of "one man one vote".

  14. bilbobaggins Says:

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said that putting the DoJ in charge of transparency in government is a conflict of interest.

Especially when we have an administration that has completely politicized our DOJ. Every time I hear a Republican troll scream "witch hunt" regarding our DOJ I have to think of how they would have reacted if it had been a Democratic President that had made the DOJ a party extension.

It's not just Great Britain that has a "healthy skepticism" towards what is said in Washington. It is pretty much the world. I really to have a lot of compassion for whomever is our next President. They have a serious job cut out for them trying to repair all the damage the Bushies have wrought upon this countries reputation in the world. The thing that amazes me is that Bush really doesn't care that he has trashed this country's reputation.

Our voting system should be, at the least, rethought. There are advantages to having the primaries spread out over time - we get to see if candidates are pandering and if they have staying power. The disadvantage of Iowa and NH having such influence every election is very problematic. As for a strict popular vote, I like this for the general election but for the primaries, especially with multiple candidates, there would be problems with either a delegate or a popular vote. I would rather see a system whereby voters can rank their choices in the primary and each rank has a weight so that the candidate with the most weighted votes get the nomination. This would allow voters to still have influence when the candidates begin to drop out because the voters' second or third choice still has support recorded. This would be especially helpful in states which allow early voting.

  33. Marie Says:

Gone virtually unnoticed by the media was a true rarity: a Bush power grab, pushed through by the previous Republican Congress actually rolled back.

Passed and signed into law in a very hush-hush manner, the law opened the door for Bush to use the National Guard and other military forces domestically for almost any purpose he might deem appropriate.

Indeed, the president could order the Guard of any state into any other state, even if the governors of both states objected.

Sen. Leahy got the right people front and center before his committee.

Upon learning of the change, infuriated governors, National Guard
associations and local law enforcement groups mounted a campaignfor repeal.

The repeal went into the latest Defense authorization, and quietly, and with little notice, a Bush power-grab was actually rolled back.

This is thier plan.....hard to believe that Americans would destroy a strong economy just to be able to justify not funding programs like this. Of course this is just one example.......

Just goes to show you that republicans can't live in a democracy....If they don't like the way the majority thinks then they go behind their backs and do something underhanded......why don't the American people see this?

  51. PeterW Says:

When only a fraction of the populace votes, elections are won on turnout. If the R establishment loathes and bashes McCain, it will inevitably depress R turnout. Who wants to bother to vote when your party mouthpieces are so down on your candidate? Especially since Rs are largely authoritarian followers; many will take the propagandists' loathing of McCain as an affirmative command to stay home.

On the other hand, Dems are excited about their choices. The loathing of Sen. Clinton on the left side of the web doesn't (as much as I might like it to) translate into a loathing of her by the base. The excitement over this election is going to boost Dem turnout like never before. Even if the Independents break about evenly, that's advantage: Dem.

Add to that months of 527 ads reminding voters about how McCain wants to remain in Iraq for 100 years, and how he was against the Bush tax cuts for the rich before he was for them, a sinking economy, and McCain's embrace of Bush's most unpopular policies, and those poll numbers showing McCain doing well in a general evaporate.

The original power grab was pushed thru by the rubber stamp GOP Congress in Sept 2006. Bond criticized the secretive origin of the measure (after the fact). "Nobody knows where it came from," he said at the hearing. "I think it was ill- conceived..."

"Nobody knows..." Riiiight... nobody wants to admit they know where it came from.

Leahy's bill was attached to the current Defense Authorization, which Botch could not afford to sign.

Also, I'd like to know, has Botch already issued a signing statement exempting himself from this? or will he?

Keep up the good work Rush! Lambasting the GOP's front-runner is a great way of alienating those supporting him. It's not just Bush that is destroying the Bush enabling Republican Party, it's right-wing nutjobs like Rush, Sean and Glenn who are motivating moderates and conscientious Republicans to become Independents and to vote for Democrats like Obama and Clinton. These people are so dysfunctional they "need" someone to hate even when that someone is one of their own. Today's right-wing media pundits going after McCain are examples of what I call reverse political moral hypocrisy. It's wrong for others to divide Republicans to enable Democrats to defeat them, but not necessasrily wrong for them. Like George W. Bush, their beliefs take precidence over the majority of those in their party who have different beliefs. They say they believe in democracy, but the do everything within their power to prevent the will of the majority from being realized. What's the difference between a Republic and a Fascist state when a powerful beligerent minority insists on ovveruling the will of the majority?

I know ... and I am much to blame for bashing in the past. But am trying to be better. They really do thrive on the negative attention. :(

Happy Mardi Gras to you Bienville!

it is a busy day today!

For once I agree with Limbaugh, who claims that "...it is ludicrous for McCain to claim the mantle of national security."

More like a “middle ground” between the Right and the Far Right.

The former chairman of Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell has called on the European Union to ban gas-guzzling cars, saying they are unnecessary. “Nobody needs a car that does 10-15 mpg,” Mark Moody-Stuart said.

this is about the imminent arrival of global peak oil production. climate change is providing cover for the biggest issue we face since the dawn of the oil age. no growth in oil production = limited or no growth in world economy = conflicts for control of oil supply.

How does Anglo Oil think I can pull my boat or my camper without a truck?

this affects the EU not you, if its ever implemented. so i wouldnt worry about your constitutionally protected human right to burn gas at an obscene rate just yet.
