Super Tuesday’s Biggest Loser: Hate Radio

Super Tuesday’s Biggest Loser: Hate Radio»

limbaughds.jpg Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) may have emerged with the most GOP delegates after yesterday’s Super Tuesday contests, but according to Brian Maloney at The Radio Equalizer, the real winner was right-wing hate radio:

Regardless of what the mainstream media might have you believe, talk radio emerged as last night’s biggest winner. It has nothing to do with actual election results, the medium simply has never been more influential than in 2008.

Don’t take your Radio Equalizer’s word for it: take a quick look at pre- and post- election coverage, it is truly difficult to find stories that don’t mention talk radio. Its role has absolutely dominated discussions of this year’s primary season.

Maloney is right that quite a few media stories have covered hate radio’s beef against McCain. But that’s because the media are always interested in the tragic demise of once powerful figures.

There’s no doubt that hate radio flourished under the Bush administration. Talkers have been invited to exclusive gatherings with President Bush and granted coveted interviews with high-ranking officials. Several people, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), noted the oversized role hate radio played in killing a comprehensive immigration bill last year.

But as the primary results have so far shown, hate radio may be on the decline. The majority of Republicans yesterday turned out and voted for McCain and Huckabee, rejecting the candidate chosen by the radical right and the xenophobic hype on immigration. A look at what the media pundits have been saying about the state of hate radio:

The big loser in South Carolina was, in fact, talk radio: a medium that has unmistakably collapsed in terms of impact, influence and credibility because of its hysterical and one-dimensional involvement in the GOP nomination fight.” [Michael Medved, 1/19/08]

“Sean Hannity said a moment ago that he has his finger on the conservative pulse. The conservative talk radio and activist pulse. Immigration is the top issues for conservatives, for conservative Republicans. I just think there’s no evidence that’s the case of most voters and in most of the country.” [Bill Kristol, Fox News, 2/5/08]

“Can we please stop pretending that immigration is a good issue for Republicans? The restrictionist side can’t even produce a victory for their man in a Republican primary.” [David Brooks, 1/30/08]

“Mr. McCain’s emergence as the dominant candidate in the Republican field has generated an outcry from some of the party’s conservative stalwarts; Rush Limbaugh says a McCain nomination would destroy the Republican Party. We think Mr. McCain…would save the party from some of its worst and most self-destructive instincts.” [Washington Post, 2/6/08]

“Their [Limbaugh and Coulter’s] claim that Mr. McCain is not a conservative…is ludicrous, but it’s damaging to a party bloodied by eight years of the politics of George Bush and Karl Rove.” [New York Times, 2/6/08]

If power is shouting and being ignored, then hate radio is king.

I read a transcript the other day where one of Rushies fans said they thought that Rush was running America and how he should tell Romney and Huckabee to stop attacking one another.

Rush, of course, actually agreed [lol] he runs America.

  5. Xisithrus Says:

I think Rush is supporting Romney because of his ties to Bain which is taking over clear channel.

Speaking at a news conference in Oklahoma, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee floated the idea that the reason the vast majority of America’s conservative talk radio hosts aren’t endorsing him or John McCain is because Mitt Romney’s investment firm owns a significant share of Clear Channel Communications, the nation’s largest radio syndication company.

The right talk radio group have badly overplayed their hand. Now watch and wait and see if they don’t start to find McCain not that bad.

It is similar to a defeated primary nominee. The person they were running against is scum, until they beat them, then they start saying nice things so they won’t be marginalized. Politics, politics…

I’m not sure how he can say that the winner was right-wing hate radio. They all hate McCain and look how much influence they ended up in having on the vote. I personally believe that right wing hate radio is becoming marginalized. Most thinking adults are sick to death of them.

  8. Krazny Says:

I think this shows how sick Americans are of hate politics. Hillary tried it against Obama and it cost her. She is fighting to stay ahead. The right wing hate radio has been doing it, and McCain is way ahead.

  9. Badger Says:

McCain got momentum by winning florida. Without support from Florida Latinos, McCain would have lost to Romney.

I think all this anti Immigrant fervor has Backfired. Latinos voted in record numbers in California yesterday, and gave Hillary her victory.

It’s all part of that pattern of making claims that are the exact opposite of observable facts. If “Talk Radio” was so damn influential, why did McCain do so well and Romney so poorly? It’s a very simple question, but people like Maloney have gotten so used to being able to say anything, without regard to reality, that they’re just going to keep doing it over and over.

  12. toasterhead Says:

Most thinking adults are sick to death of them.

True. Unfortunately, the “non-thinking adult” demographic still represents a huge share of the radio market.

Nothing pleases me more than to know that lard ass, big mouth Limbaugh is losing his “hold” over Republicans. Maybe. Or maybe they are looking forward to being back in the Opposition. After all, without Clinton, Limbaugh wouldn’t have a career. All of the pro-occupation, anti-tax, anti-immigrant shtick is wearing thin with a lot of people and it’s just easier to write material about what a crappy job the jerk in the White House is doing.

  15. Marie Says:

Don’t get too comfy, folks - right wingnuts may have been “losers” on Tuesday, but their influence on the minds of the ignorant whose brains have been damaged by the constant drumming of lies and propaganda is still very effective.
Also, what influence the right wingnuts have lost has been replaced by the right wing evangelicals.
I see that the racist hatemongers have lost a little, but the creationist Bible-thumpers have picked up what they lost and then some. So between them, they are a dangerous coalition of ignorance and hate.

  16. missmolly Says:

If the far-right hatemongers on talk radio are all pushing for Romney and trashing everybody else, then maybe they do have an influence. Both McCain and Huckabee outscored Romney yesterday — I wonder how many votes they got from Republicans who wanted to disassociate themselves from the hate crowd?

Not that it matters. When McCain gets the nomination (and it looks at this point the only thing that will keep him from getting it is if one of his famous tantrums winds up on YouTube), Limbaugh, Hannity, and all the rest of them will embrace McCain — and probably claim they ALWAYS liked him — just to defeat Obama or Hillary.

And I don’t count on Ann Coulter to campaign for Hillary, even though she said she would do so if McCain got the GOP nod.

  17. Badger Says:

Marie is right. Huckabee swept the southern primaries…and if he is on the ticket as McCain’s Vice President….I don’t think the evangelicals will stay home on election day.

It will be interesting how the Republican ticket will deal with George W.
If the election is about Bush’s record…Republicans are toast.

So they will have to run away from Bush. McCain and Huckabee are quite capable of that.

I’m not quite sure how they could do that. Both have their noses so far up Bush’s butt I’m surprised they can get them out. The Democratic candidate will have a field day running clips of all the times that McCain or Huck agreed with Bush or stood up for him on some issue. They are going to have a very hard time distancing themselves from Herr Bush.

Creepy troll USA has showed up to dazzle us with his wit. Someone should ask him when was the last time a left leaning talk show host threatened or advocated violence against anyone. Someone should also ask him when was the last time anyone on the left threw a temper tantrum, like the right-wing talkers do on a regular basis. Then ask him to quote the last “hateful” thing that anyone on the left said and make him prove it. I’m betting that the creep can’t do any of those things.

  29. RUCerious Says:

    Comment by RUCerious

Absolutely. They have plenty of film clips they can use on both McCain and Huck. Personally I would like to see a “Willie Horton” ad on Huckabee reminding everyone that the man actively worked to get a rapist out of prison, said rapist then raping again and killing. That is way less than the Republiscums “Willie Horton” ad against Dukakis whose only crime was to be governor at the time that Willie Horton was let out of prison. Dukakis didn’t actively campaign to get Horton out of prison.

I have consistently wondered why Huckabee has been given a pass on that one.

  36. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

If there is one thing we should have learned by now, it’s that the propagandists running the modern conservative movement are profoundly dishonest. I don’t believe this “conservatives don’t like McCain” B.S. for a New York second. This is simply another philosophical scam and I’m surprised that people are buying into it. They’re simply trying to fool independents and conservative-leaning Democrats into believing that McCain is a moderate and “liberal” for a repube.

Please try to remember the year leading up to the 2000 election. Remember? Bush was a “moderate.” There was some question about whether or not he was conservative enough. McCain doesn’t care if we’re in Iraq for 100 years, he says he would appoint Supreme court judges in the mold of Alito and Roberts, he wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent and he would cut social spending to pay for expanded military budgets. He cheerfully sings about bombing Iran and calls himself a “foot-soldier in the Reagan revolution.” What in the world is “moderate” about any of that?

  37. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

USA Patriot: “I don’t listen to lefty hate radio, but am confident this probably occurred today. You haters hate 24/7.”

Translation for sane people: “I don’t have any idea what I’m talking about, but I’m certain that I’m right about it.”

  42. Marie Says:

The Dems most important goal, obviously, is to win the Congress and the White House in November. So the basic question is who can do it?
McCain and Huckabee will be a formidable ticket - not because either one of them is worth two cents, but because of their particular appeal to what makes up the Republican party in America - warmongers and holy-rollers. (What a contradictory pair, but there they are!)
Clinton is a strong candidate, no doubt, but her baggage is enormous. She will inspire Repugs to come out to vote against her! Her husband will bring out a second generation of Ken Starrs. Her war vote, and her votes with the conservatives are too numerous, making it difficult for her to campaign that she is different from McCain. The rightwing radio nuts will be reinvigorated.
Obama is my fave but can he really win the racists in America? They don’t just live in the south, but they are alive and well here in the midwest and across the nation. The swiftboaters will have a hard time with him and his positive message and no skeletons in his closet - but we know they will fire up the KKK and all the bigots in the nation.

I once believed that the Dems were a shoo-in for November - but I am having serious doubts. I think I may apply for my passport now.

You libs wish this was true! HAve you wackos lost it? Did Rush radio die when Clinton was elected? Ha! Just the opposite!!

Rush does NOT try and tell his listeners who to vote for and he never has. You act like he, Sean, etc etc treat their listeners as “mind numbed robots”!

Unfortunately for you left nutters, talk radio is very much alive and well and doing FANTASTIC in the rating and making MILLIONS!

    Sorry!

  46. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Marie, I like both of them, but don’t for one second think that conservatives wouldn’t bring out the big guns to slime Obama. As a matter of fact, he does have a few inconsequential “skeletons in his closet,” but please remember that the skeletons in the Clintons’ closet never amounted to a hill of beans. That just doesn’t matter. Facts don’t matter in this game for conservatives. It may be harder to come at Barak Obama than Hillary Clinton, but I’m not so sure about that. In a way, she’s been innoculated and he’s a fresh target.

But also keep in mind that this race isn’t as close as the mainstream media would like you to believe. They make $40 billion in political ad money every 4 years and it is in their corporate interest to make you think it’s a “horserace.” The closer they can make it, the better the ratings and the more political ads they get to sell. McCain is a warmongering crackpot liar and Huckleberry is a religious fanatic who personally worked for the release of a serial killer who went on to murder two women. Either Clinton or Obama can beat these two a-holes like an old drum.

  47. Marie Says:

I hope your encouraging words are right, Ret. Col. Jack

I don’t think Obama is even going to try for the racist vote. That would be like John McCain courting Cindy Sheehan’s vote.

  49. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Hello, Captain. As a conservative, is there any position McCain holds that you could honestly call anything other than conservative? And, if you can’t really think of a position McCain holds that is not conservative, why would conservatives be spreading the idea that he is not conservative enough? I think it’s simply intellectual dishonesty. I’d be interested in your opinion.

  50. Badger Says:

Obama is my fave but can he really win the racists in America?

    Frank Rich thinks he can:

    http://www.nytimes.com/ 2007/ 12/ 02/ opinion/ 02rich.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Part of the Republicans’ difficulty in countering Mr. Obama, should they have to, is their own cynical racial politics. For the most part, race has been the dog that hasn’t barked in this campaign despite the (largely) white press’s endless fretting about whether the Illinois senator is too white for black voters and too black for white voters. Most Americans aren’t racist, most Republicans included. (Those who are won’t vote for the Democratic presidential candidate even if it’s not Mr. Obama.) But the G.O.P., by its own doing, is nonetheless saddled with a history that most recently includes “macaca” and Katrina, Mr. Bush’s appearance at Bob Jones University in 2000 and the nonexistent black population of its Congressional delegation.

  53. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Marie: “Obama is my fave but can he really win the racists in America?”

He doesn’t have to. This year, because of the massive movement among Latinos to the Democrats and the tremendous advantage Dems have gained in membership, they don’t need the deep south. The Dems can win the Southwest. They can win Ohio because Repubs are not running the vote there anymore. They can win Florida because they’re going to paper ballots. They will completely own the Northeast and the West and possibly pick up Colorado as well.

  54. Don in Texas Says:

Didn’t the Bush folks trash the “War Hero” in South Carolina?

  58. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

25 Repube congresspeople are retiring. Twice as many Repube senators are up for reelection than Dems. Even Republican insiders believe Dems will gain 8 or 9 seats in the Senate giving them a supermajority and up to 25 or 30 seats in the House for a supermajority there as well. Clinton or Obama will sign any legislation given to them by a Democratic congress. The modern conservative/libertarian movement is OVER people. Many of their cult-like followers don’t realize this yet, but come November, they’ll be sitting in dark corners having a good, wet cry.

  59. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

USA Patriot: “Many patriotic Hispanics, like other patriotic Americans, will not choose the guy with no experience over the war hero as Commander in Chief in the middle of a war.”

OK, that approaches a cogent argument and deserves a response. Most polls show that up to 72% of Latinos want us out of Iraq. Most polls show that over 65% of Latinos want some form of government-mandated universal healthcare. This year, Latinos are registering as Dems by about a 2 to 1 margin over registering as Repubs. Yes, in the past, they’ve been about 50-50, but the hysteria over illegal immigration, mainly pushed by Republicans, has driven them away. This was a huge political mistake by the Repub party, but they had no alternative - they needed a new boogeyman to draw attention away from the disasterous policies of this repub administration and repubs in congress. Repubs will pay for this mistake in November.

  60. dbadass Says:

That’s odd I remember a terrible example of negative campaigning during those days by the missing nonWar hero like guy especially in South Carolina. I am pretty sure I am right on this which would of course make you wrong.

  61. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

“Didn’t the Bush folks trash the “War Hero” in South Carolina?”

    USA Patiot: “No.”

It is common knowledge that Karl Rove orchestrated a push-polling campaign in South Carolina which infered that McCain had an illigitimate black child and was mentally unfit. McCain’s wife was reduced to tears during this campaign. Rove did this because McCain had scored an unexpected victory over Bush in the New Hampshire primary. That McCain has embraced the same people who slimed him is a measure of his shamelessness.

  65. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Captain, you seem like a thoughtful conservative, so I’m not surprised you like McCain on the issues. To me, he’s straight-ahead conservative on every issue. Of course, as a lefty, I think he’s wrong about almost everything and I have serious questions about his character. He makes glib jokes about bombing countries, tells inappropriate groaners on the campaign trail, has a hair-trigger temper and that rackish grin he keeps pasted on his face during what should be serious moments creeps me out. The main thing he has going for him is that the mainstream corporate media just loves him. He’ll lie in their faces and they keep referring to him as a “straight talker.” Look at the last debate. Russert brought up the fact that he’s admitted economics isn’t his strong suit and he said, “I never said that, where did you get that quote?” Then, Russert just let it go. Do you seriously believe Russert would have let something like that pass with either Democratic frontrunner?

  66. Bad Eye Says:

I had to laugh at Rep. David Davis’ comments about Huckabee when he visited TN the other day.

Davis appeared with Huck at the local airport for a rally. He didn’t endorse Huck that day, but said that if Huck won the Republican nomination, he would endorse him. Of course, Davis certainly didn’t turn down an opportunity to get his face out in public or his name in the paper.

Besides, we all know who Davis didn’t vote for in yesterday’s primary.

One of the things that makes the Republican race worth watching is that in the three GOP candidates, we pretty much have the three legs of the GOP ideology. McCain represents the warmongers, Huckabee represents the evangelicals, and Romney represents the Reaganomics fans.

We could assume that McCain’s lead means the warmongers are winning over the other legs. On the other hand, Republicans may just be voting for the candidate who scares them the least, or the one they least consider a nutcase.

  69. Badger Says:

How can a guy who proudly says he wants “free market” solutions to healthcare win in a year when almost 70% of the public disagrees with that? How can a guy who complains about $35 billion in earmarks gain any political traction on that when he doesn’t mind spending $2 TRILLION occupying Iraq??!!!

How can a guy who says he would appoint Supreme court judges in the mold of Alito and Roberts convince moderates to give him the right to appoint judges? I could go on and on, but I think you get the point.

How can one of the two far left “progressives” (i.e. fascists) with no leadership or executive experience win running against a war hero, when national security is such a prominent issue? Seems far-fetched, but America did elect Jimmy Carter, so anything is possible.

    Comment by USA_Patriot — February 6, 2008 @ 8:07 pm

Um — George W. Bush, who ducked Vietnam by using connections to serve in the Air National Guard, defeated John Kerry, a three-time purple heart awardee. I doubt seriously that voters really care about military service, what wars candidates served in, or their various acts of heroism in wartime. Voters are going to vote based on how they feel about the candidate’s stance on issues important to them now.

Oh — and about Jimmy Carter? He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served proudly as a Naval officer.

    Comment by USA_Patriot — February 6, 2008 @ 8:12 pm

OK — if you consider it a myth that the push-poll phone calls existed, here’s the word from McCain’s 2000 campaign manager, Richard H. Davis.

    http://www.boston.com/ news/ politics/ president/ articles/ 2004/ 03/ 21/ the_anatomy_of_a_smear_campaign/

Davis admits he doesn’t know WHO orchestrated the push-poll, but he knows it happened. John Weaver (McCain’s political director) on the other hand, openly alleged that it was a Rovian dirty trick. Weaver had worked with Rove before, and was familiar with his methods.

    Rove has denied the charge:

    http://www.cnn.com/ POLITICS/ blogs/ politicalticker/ 2007/ 03/ rove-responds-to-2000-south-carolina.html

Even though Rove has denied having anything to do with it (kind of in a “neener, neener, neener, you can’t prove it!” way), the fact that the M.O. bears his fingerprints and the Bush campaign benefited from the smear has caused many to believe culpability on Rove’s part.

Remind us how much war experience George “I’m a War President” Bush had prior to 2000? What’s that? None? Bush’s experience as a politician/office holder amounts to all of 6 years. No wonder the war on terror is such a major f-k up.

I can only speak for myself but this was posted by another sensible person who is respected in the forum and I agree.

It is time that we treat good_golly and other similar vermin in the manner that all such subhumans should be treated:

    1. There is absolutely no pretense of civil discourse. They are simply wrong. There is absolutely no debate and nothing they say can create a legitimate debate.

    2. Let them know that they are criminal scum and will not be debated. They need to learn that their beliefs are not just wrong but criminal and absolutely immoral. These scum have too long gained a semblance of legitimacy by claiming that you have a right to civil debate. They do not.

    3. Let them know that we believe they are no better than any other terrorist. They advocate crimes against humanity. They need to know that we will label them as what they are.

    4. Let them know that we wish them the fate of all terrorists to include exclusion from civil society, imprisonment and death in a very public execution.

    5. If you meet one in public, then I suggest that you help them follow the golden rule - do to them that which they would do a terrorist. They can have no complaint. They set the rules of engagement.

I was on a certain conservative type site tha tis quite liek this one, except it’s the opposite…having a little fun. There was someone on there quoting Thomas Paine, and using one of his few “conservative” leaning quotes.
So I threw this one out:

Character is much easier kept than recovered.
    Thomas Paine

And I found a site that has a bunch of them, they are great Troll garlic, so to speak, like these:

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.
    Thomas Paine

Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.
    Thomas Paine

oooh, this one is really good:

He who is the author of a war lets loose the whole contagion of hell and opens a vein that bleeds a nation to death.
    Thomas Paine

One good schoolmaster is of more use than a hundred priests.
    Thomas Paine

    Another really good one:

Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it.
    Thomas Paine

    Love this one:

The strength and power of despotism consists wholly in the fear of resistance.
    Thomas Paine

    the Grand-daddy of them all:

War involves in its progress such a train of unforeseen circumstances that no human wisdom can calculate the end; it has but one thing certain, and that is to increase taxes.
    Thomas Paine

Couldn’t believe they were quoting the guy. Too easy.
