Vice President Dick Cheney will be in South Texas this weekend for “another hunting trip on the same ranch where he was involved in a hunting accident” back in Feb. 2006. Cheney’s press office confirmed that he is heading to the Armstrong Ranch, “the same place where Cheney accidentally sprayed Austin lawyer Harry Whittington with birdshot over his face and torso while they were both hunting quail”:
KRIS-6 News contacted Mr. Whittington on Thursday. He said he does not have plans to go hunting with Cheney this time around, but he did say, “I hope he has a good hunt.”
After initially denying that alcohol had played a role in the shooting accident, Cheney later admitted to Fox News that he did drink beer prior to the hunt.

maybe he’ll shoot himself.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:07 amCheney is going to the Armstrong Ranch to hunt because he knows that the ranch owners can be trusted to conspire to cover up a crime just like they did last time.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:07 amNow now Cheney, don’t want to piss off those Evangelicals.. and umm you know.. the president - Mr recovering alcoholic himself.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:07 amOkay, citizens near Armstrong Ranch, hide your lawyers, close all your stores that sell beer, and for gawd’s sake, whatever you do, don’t be standing next to the Evil one during controlled hunting, and never, ever, EVER, look into his eyes!
February 8th, 2008 at 10:12 amBooze, firearms and killin’, a phony Christian wingnut’s wet dream.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:13 amDICK chAINREACTIONHEARTATTACK will hopefully shoot one of his REICH-wing COMRADES.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:18 amCheney will have the skeet shooter loaded with peasants instead of lawyers this time.

David Frum, online Q&A at the Financial Times… most of his answers are predictable wingnut crapola, but you’ve gotta check this out:
Do you think that anything Clinton or Obama could propose would be more costly and counterproductive than the Iraq war?
Kurt Bayer, Vienna, Austria
David Frum: The present value of the projected costs of the prescription drug benefit introduced by President Bush in 2004 is approximately 15 times as much as the Iraq war.

February 8th, 2008 at 10:19 amChop down trees?? What’s wrong with you? You must be one of those REICH-wing REPUKLIKANS that come on here to be nothing but a piece of crap TROLLIO. GET A LIFE!!!!!

February 8th, 2008 at 10:24 amDuck…quail…pheasant…people, whatever. Welcome to the “Oddball” segment of Think Progress.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:24 amCheney just thinks he’s googling, after all the original point and click interface was a Smith & Wesson./sarc
February 8th, 2008 at 10:24 amYou know, we’ve had probably more than our fair share of fun skewering Cheney for his inability to tell a lawyer from a bird (and rightly so), but I find the very nature of places like Armstrong Ranch to be almost as disturbing.
Birds raised in captivity, that have never had to forage for their own food, flee predators, and cope in the wild. Mostly likely, they have never even flown. Then one day they are released for the purpose of being blasted by “hunters” who do this for “sport”.
I once had to arrange a trip to one of these places for a bunch of high level executives at the company I was working for several years ago. I discovered there are a lot of places like this where anyone with money and a shotgun can come in and mow down birds that don’t even know enough to run away, let alone fly.
REAL hunters are embarrassed by such places. And it seems to me that a bigger thrill could be obtained just by going to a shooting gallery and hitting a row of moving metal duck silhouettes.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:24 amDrinking beer before hunting…and fibbed about it.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:25 amWhy getting drunk and shooting people is a leftist thing according to the trollips that fester here. WTF?
Why do the trollips hate Cheney?

Or the other way around!!
February 8th, 2008 at 10:29 am13 - good point - the Veep gets his rocks off on a very, very weak and dubious brand of “hunting” - no doubt the same kind of vicarious thrill he gets sending our young people to go kill Iraqis. I guess there are those who believe money and influence are a fair substitute for dignity and self-respect, because no self-respecting hunter would ever do what the Veep does.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:30 amGosh, I can’t imagine why Armstrong wouldn’t want to trigger PTSD symtoms. Actually, just having Cheney in the proximity might do just that.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:30 amNow now, can’t we get over this? Whittington apologized so we should accept it and move on.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:30 amREAL hunters are embarrassed by such places.

For the pseudo-tough guys, this is the best they can do. In their small minds’ eye, this proves they are macho men.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:37 amDoes Cheney golf?
Is there anything to shoot when you play golf? I know you can drink…
February 8th, 2008 at 10:40 amSigns posted at the Armstrong Ranch:
Beware of the loaded Dick wearing hunter orange and carrying a very expensive Italian shotgun.

February 8th, 2008 at 10:41 amDick, the lone gunman. Too bad he couldn’t satisfy his urge to shoot stuff over in Nam.He had better things to do back then,ya know.

Great post, missmolly. Of course, Dick is content to send young men and women off to be killed, just to make a pretty penny, even though he himself never served! Dick is no real hunter, and he is sure no humanitarian.
February 8th, 2008 at 10:48 amAnd why he got a pass for not taking a sobriety test after the “incident” still floors me. It’s standard procedure!
Good Gawd, could you imagine the hissy fit the right would have thrown if this had happened to Al Gore during the late 90’s??
Drinking beer before hunting…and fibbed about it.

And then refused to talk to the local police until the day after the shooting, further covering up his drunken behavior.

In an episode of The Beverly Hillbillies, Jed Clampett thought so. Yet despite that, even he was light years ahead of ol’ Dick in intelligence. And he was a fictional character!

Birdies and eagles of course!
February 8th, 2008 at 11:28 am#13 Not all hunting ranches are the same. I share your concern and am against those places that release birds a few hours before a hunt. They never have a chance.
On the other hand, many ranches are solid operations. I personally own alot of acres and raise pheasents myself. We release all the male birds before the hunting season starts. While they are being raised, they are able to fly as the area is very large. These birds come hunting season are no different then their wild counterparts. We release around 1000 male birds and we shoot around 80-150 each year. Most make it and expand the total wild population. We also take the extra effort to raise the females over the entire winter. We then release them before the spring breeding season. This gives the the optimum chance of survival and reproduction. Many ranches are very very good the game populations in fact.
In the end, some are very bad, but many are very good.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:30 amThis must be why Cheney’s dog, Dave, was taken by limo and two carloads of Security to the vets for shots. Sure wish I could have the same healthcare as Cheney’s dog.

Actually, I care what he says. If he is correct that not all private bird-hunting places are like the ones I’ve researched, I find this encouraging. And I hope it’s true.
February 8th, 2008 at 11:50 amCheney’s got a gun
February 8th, 2008 at 12:22 pmCheney’s got a gun
His whole world’s come undone
From lookin’ straight at the sun
What did them liberals do?
What did they put you through?
They said he won’t be arrested
when he shot his friend in the face
But man, he had it comin’ Now that Cheney’s got a gun again
we are worried for the whole human race.
I would hope that his SS entourage wears full body armor and carries riot gear.

Well I’m no saint, that’s for sure, so Augie is fine. Just an old man in the nation’s oldest city.
February 8th, 2008 at 12:51 pmAll I can say is DUCK
February 8th, 2008 at 1:02 pmBe interesting to know where the SS guys stand, like how far away from cheney. A lot of these “hunters” stay in the vehicle and shoot as the birds are routed from their bushes. Did I mention that some birds even have their wings clipped so the Big Brave Hunter can’t miss ? Yes, such a he man sport.

Heh heh! I did start to clarify that in the post…
February 8th, 2008 at 1:22 pmIt’s not accurate to use the word “hunt” to describe slaughter at a concentration camp for animals.
