This issue seems like a moot point now that Discovery has sold the rights to HBO, except that their response sounds dishonest. HBO is not a “sister network” of Discovery as far as I can tell. Does anyone know otherwise? If the allegations are true — that Discovery dropped the film because it was too controversial — I’d like to know from where and from whom the pressure was coming.

I’m guessing you haven’t seen this film. I saw it on broadcast TV in the UK. It is a straightforward documentary. It is not “liberal propaganda”. It makes the US look very bad simply because it is honest about what is going on.

The really annoying thing here is that Discovery has bought the rights to the film and that will make it harder for the film to be viewed elsewhere.

It’s too bad that media corporations prefer peddling lies over “controversial” truth. In a just world, this attitude would lead to a massive legal retaliation.
