ThinkFast: February 8, 2008

bushnpri.jpg

The American public “can barely stand the thought of President Bush” anymore. His approval rating is now at just 30 percent, according to a new AP-Ipsos poll, “including an all-time low in his support by Republicans.” Congress’s approval also dropped to 22 percent.

Military authorities at Gitmo have lost a year’s worth of records detailing the confinement of Salim Hamdan, Osama bin Laden’s driver. Hamdan’s lawyers say the records would “support their argument that prolonged isolation and harassment at the Guantanamo prison have mentally impaired him.”

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) said in a statement yesterday that Immigrations and Customs Enforcement head Julie Myers “deserved to be confirmed” but added that he is “concerned about the Department’s response to the incident” after the release of controversial photos of Myers.

Yesterday, Attorney General Michael Muksey refused to answer the question of whether or not he had been instructed by the President not to enforce the subpoenas of Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten.

Earlier this year, Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) said that the thought of John McCain as president “sends a cold chill down my spine. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.” After initially supporting Mitt Romney, Cochran changed his tune on McCain yesterday and said he is now supporting him.

While John McCain is superior to Bush on climate change, he is still not the type of leader the world requires. “He is a conservative who happens to be on the only intellectually defensible side of the climate change debate,” writes Joe Romm, “but he is still a conservative, and the vast majority of the solutions to global warming are progressive in nature — they require strong government action, including major federal efforts to spur clean technology.”

In a 354-58 vote, the House yesterday approved legislation “aimed at curtailing rising college costs and limiting student debt.” The bill would also “expand federal Pell Grants to summer-school students and would address conflicts of interest in the student lending industry.” Campus Progress has more on legislation.

Legislation to update the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act “is headed toward Senate passage early next week” after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) “pushed back key votes.” The telecom immunity measure will also “likely be put off until next week.”

And finally: “The State Department is defeating terrorism one ’strong, engaging’ online video at a time.” The State Department’s Office of Public Diplomacy is “looking for an extra $36 million in 2009,” in order to boost its Video Production Team” and create “strong, engaging web-based video that communicates key U.S. values and counters terrorist ideologies.” Want an example of the office’s work? Watch its “video report” on Obama Girl and the “Hillary 1984″ ad here.

    The FBI Deputizes Business

Today, more than 23,000 representatives of private industry are working quietly with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. The members of this rapidly growing group, called InfraGard, receive secret warnings of terrorist threats before the public does-and, at least on one occasion, before elected officials. In return, they provide information to the government…But there may be more to it than that. One business executive, who showed me his InfraGard card, told me they have permission to “shoot to kill” in the event of martial law.

** Several members of InfraGard allegedly said that Martial Law IS coming soon.

Of course, maybe the Dems will grow spines and stand up to Bush this time. THAT would be different.

“After initially supporting Mitt Romney, Cochran changed his tune on McCain yesterday and said he is now supporting him.”

We are going to see a lot of Republicans doing the flippety flop when it comes to McCain. He’s 60% of the way to the nomination (based on pledged delegates so far) and many of his party are accepting that he will be the inevitable nominee. They will support him if they have to hold their noses while doing so — much like I will be doing if Hillary gets the Dem nod.

  6. PeterW says:

Before the trolls start to say otherwise, breakout of Congressional approval polls show that the Repubs poll 10 points lower than the Dems, and the Dems’ low approval rating comes from the fact that they’re not perceived as opposing Mr. 30% enough.

So, with that in mind, this is a preemptive STFU, trolls.

  7. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Isn’t the Senator Cochran up for re-election this year? If he won his seat in 2002, then 2008 would be 6 years. He must be hoping to ride back McCain’s coattails. That could happen, only McCain’s coattails will take him out of office not re-elect him. There’s a chant in the South and goes like this: “Obama, Obama”. This Democratic movement will be a huge hurdle for Cochran to overcome. Maybe he should retire and get a job with a lobby like the rest of his friends.

Right. The problem is with the corn and sugar ethanol regime pushed by the agrobusiness lobby that’s driving up the price of food and provides no net environmental benefits.

Cellulosic ethanol would be ideal. From what I understand, the difficulty in the technology right now is not on the consumer end – ethanol from cellulose is chemically identical to ethanol from corn or sugar. The difficulty is in producing ethanol at high volume. It’s a slow process of breaking down cellulose into fermentable sugars, then fermentation and distillation. It’s also a very expensive process, $120 per barrel. It’s going to take some engineering to get the costs below the price of oil.

Ideally, there would be no need to create special farms for cellulosic crops. It would seem to make the most sense to use the stalks, leaves, and husks of corn plants and other waste from crops that are already being grown for food. You get two products from one plant.

I don’t think he was quoting propaganda – it is a legitimate concern. It’s happening right now in Indonesia – European companies are clear-cutting old-growth rain forest to grow massive date-palm farms for biofuels. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that that sort of thing could happen here if there’s not good regulation and coordination of the emerging biofuel industry.

This needs to be part of a much larger dialogue on U.S. agricultural policy and natural resources management. Commercial agriculture is, I believe, second only to transportation in carbon and other pollution emissions, not to mention all the other environmental problems that arise from the current monocultures we’re growing.

Let’s not get into a pissing match over semantics – this is a really complex issue and it’s going to take progressives working together to fix it.

Allen was considered to be acting suspicious by police as he entered and exited the men’s room three times, according to a Titusville Police report. Moments later, he approached the plainclothes officer and offered to perform oral sex for $20, police said.

Allen faces second degree misdemeanor charges. A seven-year House veteran, the term-limited Allen had been considered a likely Senate candidate next year. He also had been named a co-chairman last spring of Arizona Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign team in Florida.

It means that just as we now have seperate bins for aluminum and plastic, we can also recycle all the wood that currently ends up in landfills. Okay, enough with the tit for tat posts of criminals. Let’s make one think perfectly clear, there are bad apples associated with both parties. No doubt. Yet, good goony wants to battle, and completely disgards any posts or links of the opposite. In effect, she chooses to ignore what she is dishing out. Sad, actually.
And it all started because she brings up Jefferson, who, as far as I know, no one here has ever defended, in fact, if (and when) he is found guilty, all feel he should be punished. Yet for some reason, certain trolls of the right want to disregard the rules of law (waterboarding included).
Yes, it seems they strive for a hierarchy of being. In a sense, they feel laws are below them, only for the peasants. And this, my friends, is what you get when you follow the examples of the current administration.
It’s time to STOP the crimes. It’s time to CHARGE the criminals. It’s time to BRING JUSTICE to those who feel they are above the law.

Olympic Teams Prepare for the Dirty Air in Beijing

    LINK

In past Olympics, athletes typically arrived in host cities at least 10 days before the start of events to get used to the conditions. This year, some of the 10,000 expected competitors say they will come to Beijing just 72 hours before their first event — raising the prospect of a fireworks-filled opening ceremony on Aug. 8 without many of the athletes.

Beijing has struggled to control air pollution for several years. To prepare for the Olympics, the city has spent $16.4 billion, moving the heaviest polluters outside its borders, planting trees, rerouting traffic and inducing rain.

In 2005, Beijing was rated the highest in sulfer dioxide emissions (from coal fired power plants mostly) Worldwide.

Makes one wonder why you seem to be ignoring the equally long list of Republican criminals and perverts.

I’ve never tried to paint the Democrats as a bastion of values or perfection. It’s always been the failing of Republicans that they never forget a misdeed by the Democrats, and never remember a misdeed by their own.

During the World War II campaign in Europe he received the Bronze Star and also the Distinguished Service Cross, which was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor.

    senator inouye’s citation:

“Second Lieutenant Daniel K. Inouye distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action on 21 April 1945, in the vicinity of San Terenzo, Italy. While attacking a defended ridge guarding an important road junction, Second Lieutenant Inouye skillfully directed his platoon through a hail of automatic weapon and small arms fire, in a swift enveloping movement that resulted in the capture of an artillery and mortar post and brought his men to within 40 yards of the hostile force. Emplaced in bunkers and rock formations, the enemy halted the advance with crossfire from three machine guns. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Second Lieutenant Inouye crawled up the treacherous slope to within five yards of the nearest machine gun and hurled two grenades, destroying the emplacement. Before the enemy could retaliate, he stood up and neutralized a second machine gun nest. Although wounded by a sniper’s bullet, he continued to engage other hostile positions at close range until an exploding grenade shattered his right arm. Despite the intense pain, he refused evacuation and continued to direct his platoon until enemy resistance was broken and his men were again deployed in defensive positions. In the attack, 25 enemy soldiers were killed and eight others captured. By his gallant, aggressive tactics and by his indomitable leadership, Second Lieutenant Inouye enabled his platoon to advance through formidable resistance, and was instrumental in the capture of the ridge. Second Lieutenant Inouye’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army.”

What’s your point? 99% of the politicians in Washington are self-serving and conniving.

  268. DRxJ says:

    good work good_moogily.
    Here’s more:
Juanita Broaddrick is an American former nursing home administrator from Arkansas. She alleged in 1998 that United States President Bill Clinton had raped her two decades earlier. Clinton’s attorney denied the allegations on his client’s behalf.

The previous year, Broaddrick had filed a sworn affadavit with Paula Jones’ lawyers denying that Clinton had ever assaulted her: “During the 1992 Presidential campaign there were unfounded rumors and stories circulated that Mr. Clinton had made unwelcome sexual advances toward me in the late seventies. … These allegations are untrue ….”[1]
In November 1998, Broaddrick contradicted her sworn statement in an interview with “Dateline NBC”.[2] The interview, broadcast in February 1999, centered around Broaddrick’s accusation that Bill Clinton had raped her on April 25, 1978 during his first campaign for the governorship of the U.S. state of Arkansas, at a time when Clinton was that state’s Attorney General. In the interview, she declared that Clinton suddenly “turned me around and started kissing me, and that was a real shock. I first pushed him away. I just told him ‘no.’… He tries to kiss me again. He starts biting on my lip… And then he forced me down on the bed. I just was very frightened. I tried to get away from him. I told him ‘no.’… He wouldn’t listen to me.” In an interview for the Wall Street Journal editorial page, Broaddrick claimed that Clinton told her not to worry about pregnancy, because childhood mumps had left him sterile.[3] The alleged incident occurred two years before Chelsea Clinton was born.

She recanted her earlier sworn statement when interviewed by the FBI about the Jones case; the FBI found her account inconclusive, and the affidavit denying the allegations remains her only sworn testimony
