In Baghdad today, Defense Secretary Robert Gates “publicly endorsed the concept of ordering a pause in troop withdrawals from Iraq this summer” after the removal of five brigades returns the number of deployed troops to pre-surge levels. “A brief period of consolidation and evaluation probably does make sense,” said Gates after meeting with Gen. David Petraeus.
The Decider failed to decide. A Rand Corp. study of post-war failures in Iraq — which the Army attempted to bury — chided President Bush for failing to make key decisions prior to the war. “Throughout the planning process, tensions between the Defense Department and the State Department were never mediated by the president or his staff,” the report said.
Vice President Cheney is trying to “block the release of video depositions by White House aides” in a lawsuit “by a man who was arrested after he allegedly touched Cheney at a Colorado shopping mall in 2006.” Cheney’s lawyers expressed concern that the videos could “embarrass and even humiliate” the aides if posted to YouTube.
Newly released documents show that a “generous earmark” in 2005 by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) “was manipulated to lead to the purchase of property owned by his former aide, Trevor McCabe, now an Anchorage fisheries lobbyist.” The earmark was meant to ensure that “McCabe would be bailed out of a money-losing real estate venture by U.S. taxpayers.”
“The media have been barred from covering” Karl Rove’s speech to students at Choate Rosemary Hall, a prestigious prep school, today. Rove and the school’s headmaster “decided mutually to exclude the media.” Rove was originally set to speak at the school’s commencement, but his speech was moved to today after student protests.
President Bush will give “Congress a fresh assessment of the troubled economy as he prepares to sign a $168 billion stimulus package into law.” Yesterday, Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said the “U.S.’s economic growth rate is expected to slow in the first half of 2008, but it is likely to recover to an acceptable rate in the second quarter of the year.”
Coal utilities and the Bush administration “suffered another setback with a federal appeals court decision,” which “slap[ped] down the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to ‘delist’ mercury from a list of pollutants it is required to control at each power plant.”
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez threatened to cut off oil sales to the United States in an “economic war” if Exxon Mobil Corp. wins court judgments to seize billions of dollars in Venezuelan assets.
“Despite the political minefields that surround the issue,” House Democrats are drafting stopgap immigration reform legislation that would likely include “five-year visas for illegal immigrants who pay fines and pass criminal background checks.”
And finally: Last week’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) was, as always, “full of colorful characters and even more colorful posters, t-shirts and signs.” The DC Examiner photographed the top 10 CPAC signs here.

EXCLUSIVE! Pelosi & AIPAC put the Squeeze on KUCINICH!
A source in the Kucinich for President campaign, told us there’s more to the story of Rep. Kucinich’s withdrawal than is publicly known.
…Before the Nevada primary, Dennis was visited by representatives of Nancy Pelosi and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee — AIPAC. They told Dennis that if he would drop his campaigns to impeach Cheney and Bush, they would guarantee his re-election to the House of Representatives.
Kucinich threw them out of his office.
Dennis now faces the toughest election campaign of his entire tenure in congress, with huge amounts of money being spent to turn his constituents against him due to “his neglect of his district while he ran for president.â€
This man the mainstream media say is not relevant, poses such a threat to the powers that be that they are hellbent to destroy him, and remove that troublemaker from congress.

The more I think about it the more I become convinced that this was all by design. If we had gone into Iraq and done things right, there would have been no excuse for our not leaving quickly. They needed time in order to be able to convince the Iraqi’s to turn over their oil profits to our US companies. That could not have happened if we hadn’t bombed their country into the stone age and created total chaos so that the Iraqi’s would be afraid to ask us to leave.

The reason that Cheney and his lawyers have for trying to keep these videos secret is the lamest ever. I mean — c’mon — the fear of “cutting and splicing” these videos into something embarrassing is a danger??? I guess since virtually any audio or video of anyone can be cut and spliced, we should ban audio and video recordings altogether. Photographs should go, too — since they can be photoshopped.
There are only two valid reasons for keeping these deposition tapes a secret. One — if they contain classified information. And two — if the witness being deposed is a Secret Service agent, that witness’s identity should not be made public.

February 11th, 2008 at 10:43 amJust venting my frustration here.
The big topic on the Progressive blogs and Air America is MSNBC reporter David Schuster’s comments about the Clintons pimping out Chelsea for their campaign. He has been suspended for a couple weeks.
Yet there was virtual DEAD silence when MSNBC fought Dennis Kucinich all the way to the Nevada Supreme Court to deny him the right to speak to Democrats at a Democratic debate.
As I posted at the time, MSNBCs parent company GE revnues come primarily from Defense Contracting, Nuclear Power and Media. Kucinich had been very outspoken about all these issues.
Politcal censorship by corporate media should be a topic that OUTRAGES all TRUE Democrats, Progressives and Indys.
So why is the uproar over David Schuster’s comments receiving 1000x’s more attention than MSNBCs treatment of Dennis Kucinich back then? There’s simply no question which abuse was more egregious.
What the hell is wrong with everybody?

February 11th, 2008 at 11:03 amI watched Huckabee’s speech to CPAC.
Clearly, he’ll sit side by side with God as POTUS.
Does that scare anyone else but me?
February 11th, 2008 at 11:06 amThe Huckster is right to challenge. My sense is that the outlying counties would be the last to report in, and they are the evangelical bastions in the state.

This is bad indeed. Look at the advisories that are out there already telling women to limit their ingestion of fish (In the aquatic environment, a percent of mercury goes to methyl-mercury which has bad effects on the fetus. This is not theoretical, there are already advisories from the FDA on this.)

AIPAC runs foreign policy, espcecially in the Middle East.
Lieberman, Schumer, Pelosi, Hillary, Jane Harman, Obama, McCain, Rice, Bush, Cheney, Bill Nelson, Bob Menendez, Santorum, Jeff Bingaman, Giuliani, and many others are their whores.
Dennis Kucinich, Ron Paul, and Mike Gravel took ZERO from AIPAC, and observe what has happened to them by the media that is kissing the ring of Zionist lobbies. It all comes down to money.
Anyone with a sense of decency and American Patriotism should immediately study on their own, and see these Middle East occupations are at the behest of the Right Wing Likud/Zionists that have hijacked Israel’s government.
Get off this “Hillary isn’t perfect, but she’s better than Bush” nonsense. If you have loved ones in the military or just care about where our tax dollars are being flushed to, you must realize the smoke screen of the “Black man or woman” choice. I was on the fence with Hillary until I saw her cackle at Mike Gravel when he confronted her at the debate. A man who voted against the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, and who stopped the draft in 1975.
I sometimes listen to an read “The Church of The Subgenius”, or “The Church of Bob”. It is hilarious and profound insight into modern society. IT is also a parody on American Icons and objects of worship. There was one video that was about “The Danger of The Rogue Subgenius”. This was someone who was a hippy, cybernaut, beatnik, poet, artist, or other Non-Linear thinker, but decided/forced to become an Establishment-ite. The idea was this person was far more dangerous than someone who was always a Conservative. Hillary and Bill, and even George W Bush would come under this classification.

Get off this “Hillary isn’t perfect, but she’s better than Bush†nonsense. If you have loved ones in the military or just care about where our tax dollars are being flushed to, you must realize the smoke screen of the “Black man or woman†choice. I was on the fence with Hillary until I saw her cackle at Mike Gravel when he confronted her at the debate. A man who voted against the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, and who stopped the draft in 1975.
I’m not sure where YOU get your “facts”, Brain, but, given the verifiable fact that Mike Gravel was not elected to the US Senate until 1968 and the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was voted on in 1964, it seems a bit difficult to believe that Gravel could have voted AT ALL on the Resolution.
From Wikipedia:
Gravel also benefited by being deliberately ambiguous about his Vietnam policy. Gruening had been one of only two Senators to vote against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and, according to Gravel, “…all I had to do was stand up and not deal with the subject, and people would assume that I was to the right of Ernest Gruening, when in point of fact I was to the left of him.” (It was Gruening, Gravel’s predecessor, who cast one of the two “nay” votes.)
Also, I’d point out that Gravel didn’t stop “the draft in 1975″. He did attempt to bring an end to the draft in 1971, when the then-current draft program was up for RENEWAL (he was, however, quite silent on the draft for the first two years of his Senate term); the law at the time was scheduled to end in June 1971, but Nixon had (in Feb 1971) announced his intention to request a 2-year extension (some skeptics in the Senate wanted a 4-year extension while Gravel–in May–became one of several Senators who basically wanted to let the law lapse). Gravel filibustered against any extension twice but cloture was invoked both times, and in Sept 1971, the two-year extension became law. While it may be a bit of a stretch to state that Gravel lied about his being responsible for ending the draft, it is fair to say that he overexaggerates his “success” with regards to the draft.
