Number of women who have contacted gang-rape victim Jamie Leigh Jones and said that they too had suffered sexual assault while working for Halliburton/KBR in Iraq. Jones, who testified to Congress today, says that many of the women “cannot speak publicly due to arbitration agreements in their employment contracts.”

Arbitration is for disagreements about the terms of an employment contract. It HAS NOTHING TO DO with RAPE or SEXUAL HARRASSMENT (both crimes).

February 12th, 2008 at 6:52 pmWhat I find discouraging about this story is the fact that so many women are willing to settle for a cash payment for having been sexually harassed or assaulted. I think I can buy it for harassment, but not for assault. If any of those women were sexually assaulted, they need to be shouting it from the rooftops and pushing for prosecution. Last I saw, rape was still a felony in this country. And I don't care if it occurred in Iraq. It occurred with a US citizen working for a US company, so US laws should apply.

February 12th, 2008 at 7:16 pmI like this site a lot. I visit it many times a day- the news updates are relevant and rapid. The debate is better than most sites, but there seems to be a creeping animosity in the discussions, mostly initiated by trolls.
I would rather TP remain a place to visit for insight rather than insult. We are better here than the trolls that visit with the intent to disrupt, and although I'm a newbie as a commenter, I have watched this site for a long time and always enjoyed the give-and-take.
Let's not lose that to losers.

For whatever your reasons in asking- I look at the Floyd's Barbershop sites such as Redstate and Newsbusters, check in on Kos and Politico and huffpo, slate and salon and a bunch of others, following stories and links. I work from my home so this is easy, time wise. I prefer TP for breaking and obscured news, balance it against the MSM takes. I'm a progressive independent, as is my wife. I live in the foothills in Colorado. I have degrees in Poli Sci and Psych; my wife is duals in Soc and Phil. We haven't missed a single vote in 60 collective years- proud of that- and are Obama fans. We have our own business and two kids, one entering college. She has chosen to be a progressive/non-aligned independent.

February 12th, 2008 at 8:01 pmWhen I was in college, I manned a suicide intervention line during the wee hours. We had great training, given by a joint effort of my school UIC and a local crisis intervention group. One of the biggest issues was determining whether a caller was just looking for attention, or was really in the mindset to hurt or kill himself, maybe others. This was important because we were given the 911 (though this was pre-911) to call out the police and fire departments, based on our call of the situation. I was 19 so this was a lot of new and unusual responsibility.
My first call on my own was a guy who was actually in the process of suicide, overdosing and bleeding out. The fire guys got there in time. I had to quit after that. It was too intense to do again.
I relate this unbidden, long-ago memory now as it seems pertinent to JustAsking's attitudes. Is he just striking out at the world for attention, or is he really as sick as he may be?

Isn't Cheney still getting some kind of payment from Halliburton, being he is its former CEO. Sounds like his policies from when he was CEO are still in effect. Those that were raped must be allowed their day in court. A delicate matter for them though knowing the undeserved stigma some others place on the victims of this type of crime. And those found complicit in the rapes, that is upper management knowing what was going on and doing nothing, need to be brought to justice as well.

Zoo- I will check out your blog and thanks. You mentioned you were a student. THough I've not been active in the abonormal psych stuff for years (or are you PoliSci?), you might want to look at the above line by just for some clues about his mindset. I see a bit a bit of paranoia in it, a certain uncalled for defensiveness, as in most of his posts. This is a classic "small man" defense. I don't have any other logins here, so the premise is false to begin with, also a sign.
Very curious.

Have you figured out the difference between "sound like" and "are" yet?
You seemed to be having difficutly the other day, so I'm curious if you figured it out yet.

Desperation and despair are setting in, in my view. There really is no hope for the "wrong" wingers or conservatives of any stripe in the November election. The corporate controlled MSM is pushing hard to keep the sinking ship afloat, but even the 26% rats know they're dead in the water though they refuse to say so. The rats are too busy scurrying down the ropes, you might envision. Those intelligent conservatives out there have long ago abandoned the ship leaving only the bilge as spokesmen.
Yes the stench of desperation is thick in the air and trolls like O Bigmouth and justInane are really getting ripe.

t quite get why US contractors can allow the rape of women abroad, by those employed by us, as nothing less than an outrage. THis story will get traction with my 17 year old daughter, who will make it viral, and who will vote her mind next year. THey are awakening.
Maybe that is our hope.
