Rove: Media Are To Blame For Why The Economy ‘Stinks’»

Recent polls have shown that a large majority of Americans think the economy is in bad shape. Indeed, stock markets are volatile, the mortgage crisis has worsened and President Bush recently released a record breaking budget that is expected to cause rising deficits. While the skyrocketing costs of the Iraq war are not helping, job and wage growth are weak, family debt is rising and the poverty rate remains high.

Yet the right wing continues to downplay the faltering economy. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) recently blamed it all on the American people, saying that it’s just “psychological.”

Last night on Fox News, former Bush aide Karl Rove claimed that the economy is partly responsible for his former boss’s record low approval ratings. But according to Rove, the media — not Bush’s disastrous policies — are to blame:

O’REILLY: The negativity toward President Bush is Iraq driven?

ROVE: I think it’s principally. I think the economy — the media has been beating the drum for years and years and years that the economy stinks. And after a while, that begins to color people’s attitudes.

Watch it:

Experts, including Fed Chariman Ben Bernanke, have also concluded that the economy is in decline. And even though Bush recently recognized “uncertainties” in the economy, he continues to paint a rosy picture, saying that a recent White House “report indicates that our economy is structurally sound.”

Digg It!

Get this guys off the air. He is going to lie and lie and lie and lie and lie.

He’s wrong of course. He’s left his in ruin. Luckily our country is stronger than one moron like this or it would be in ruins as well.

Hey Rove, just go away please. If you do that, I will call you patriot. But only if you agree never to say anything about anything ever again.

At least he didn’t try to lay the blame off on bloggers.

  6. tombaker Says:

if by “media” he means “republicans in government” then he’s onto something.

otherwise he merely retains the title of world’s most brazen liar.

  7. JMOHR Says:

This is the typical Republican elite mantra. Notice how it works:

    1. Institute policies that cause a dramatic shift in wealth to the upper 1% of the population.

    2. Assert that it is the poor who are causing a drain on the finances of most families because of their welfare needs and high taxes to supply it.

    3. Beat the drum of personal responsibility. If you fail in this country, it is because you are morally inferior.

    4. Use gross economic indicators to show that the economy is still growing and allege that all citizens are benefiting.

  8. Marie Says:

Yeah! The media! Yeah! That’s the ticket! Blame them - it’s their fault.
I have frequently criticized the media for neglecting their responsibility in reporting the news, refusing to challenge the administration, and kowtowing to their corporate owners, but the state of the economy is hardly a fault of theirs. People are out of work and in deep financial trouble; the future doesn’t look promising — yet, according to Rove, all those problems wouldn’t exist were it not that the media continues to report the financial woes across the nation.
Would someone put a sock in his mouth? I’ve had enough of him and his bulls**t.

  9. tom Says:

The world according to KKKarl –> “Quit watching TV (except FoxSnooze). Don’t read the newspaper (except the WSJ). Just go out and shop.”

  10. raynman Says:

Yup, that makes sense… its the media that’s putting less money in my pocket… its the media that’s killing our soldiers… its the media that’s torturing people…..

oh my god… we shouldn’t be fighting Iraq… we should be fighting the media!!!

  11. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

But, wait. According to Rove, the good economy of the ’90’s was because of the Repub congress - shouldn’t he give the 90’s media credit for Bill Clinton’s good economy if he’s going to give current media credit for Bush’s bad economy? Let’s have some consistency here.

  13. Art Says:

They have been beating the drum for years that we are winning the war; that they do not torture people; that they are competent in their jobs…

None of that seemed to “color the people’s attitude.”

  14. Marie Says:

I think that seeing Karl Rove in an orange jumpsuit would do a lot to improve the “psychological” state of mind of the public, McCain.
It wouldn’t help the economy at all, but a whole lot of people would feel real good.

  15. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Well, come on… Faux News knew what they were paying for when they hired him, and KKKarl’s deliverin’ the goods.

  16. texaslady Says:

  17. And Yet... Says:

A high schooler could refute Rove’s talking points on the economy, like the one last night refuted his b.s. on gay marriage.

What I really hope is KKKarl will come out strongly in favor of St. John McBush on Fixed News. That would be choice.

He didn’t cancel the Choate speech, it got shifted from a commencement speech to a “no-press-allowed” speech. Check out the TP thread where the high school girl nailed Piggy to the wall.

His rating would be much lower and he would most likely be in jail now if the Media was actually doing it’s job well and exposing you criminals for what traitors to the country that you actually are.

  38. VerbalKint Says:

To many Americans, what goes on in Iraq is far away and abstract. The gullible can easily be fooled by the propaganda. But when it comes to the economy it won’t be so easy for these liars. The approach they are taking is similar to Bush 41, first denying the problem, then coming out with his phony “I feel your pain” message. And we know how far that got him. They are already well behind the curve in dealing with perceptions of the economy.

  44. JMOHR Says:

The greatest danger to the United States is not from Islamofascists, it is not from China, and it is not from other foreign enemies. The greatest enemy confronting the United States is complacency:

We see the rise of the anti-labor faction, the tax cutting faction and those factions decrying welfare, SSN and social safety net programs because of the economic success of the New Deal, GI Bill and Great Society programs. These programs did much to level income disparity.

A vibrant middle class grew out of the educational opportunities provided by the GI Bill to returning vets. Old age and retirement no longer had to be feared by the vast majority because of Social Security and Medicare. People were able to save for additional retirement savings, education and luxuries because they earned a living wage in large part due to the sacrifices of working people forming unions.

It was easy for the Republican elite to attack these programs with those who did not grow up during the depression or benefited from the GI Bill after WWII. It was easy to scapegoat the poor and union members as being the fault with society. It was easy to convince people that cutting taxes would be simple if we only got rid of these entitlement programs. We had grown complacent and out of that complacency we have endangered our economic security.

The same has happened with our commitment to individual liberty and justice. People saw the dangers of fascists during WWII. We saw the excesses of government security during the McCarthy days. We experienced the very real dangers of a unitary executive who could break no law under Nixon. The vast majority of the public have allowed the government to accrue power and to over ride the basic liberties that this country was founded upon because we have grown complacent.

  48. BrianFL Says:

I love the irony of a man whose whole life was built on media spin blaming media spin for the economy.

And he says this on the top rated cable news show (O’Reilly), on the highest rated cable news station (Fox News), which drum-beats for the Republican Party on a daily basis.

The right-wingers want to have it both ways. They want to brag of their media ratings dominance while at the same time telling us the liberals dominate the message in the media.

The sad reality is, Rush Limbaugh has more daily listeners than any TV network has viewers of their evening news. Sean Hannity has more radio listeners each day than any TV network has evening news viewers.

If there is a bias and opinion coming from the media in general, it’s a conservative one. And if the economy was simply driven by the media, the conservatives spinning that the economy is doing great would easily counter-balance any supposed liberal bias.

    Asleep at the wheel.

The fault lies in the public allowing the CIA to infiltrate media since 1947, fluoride dumped everywhere (did you know the first use of fluoride was giving it to Nazi Prisoners?), Aspartame (Thanks Rumsfeld), Hormones in meats and milk, pesticides in vegetables and fruits, pollution, religion, Terrible TV and music, SSRIs be given like candy, and other more clandestine operations. The “who cares” attitude is mostly bio-chemical and neurological in nature.

The President initiated war in Iraq. Go back and look at the graphs, oil was less than 30$ a barrel, now it has topped 100$

Of course, this did not impact the economy (in your world).

The point however is not to solely blame Bush for the nation’s economic woes, the point is how absurd it is to blame the media for them.

Hmm. Reading your post it is clear that you did not grasp that essential point.

Maybe you can keep your comment saved and after you are fully formed / have completed your education, you can return and observe how off-base your comprehension skills were.

  61. muckdog Says:

FYI, the Fed’s Janet Yellen again said today that she believes the economy is not in a recession. But we are experiencing slow growth. Bernanke has said that there is a chance we will have a recession, but it’s not in the latest GDP numbers just yet.

    The slow economy?

Blame the Fed for keeping rates too high for too long. They intentionally popped the housing bubble, as they did the stock bubble earlier in the decade.

Booms are followed by busts. No exceptions.

Look for the recent Fed rate cuts and government stimulus package to send the GDP back up.

The President doesn’t have much impact on the economy. The Fed’s monetary policy is the major driver of the economic cycle. The President and Congress control fiscal policy, which has less of an impact. Consider that tax rebate check from the government compared to a huge drop in rates by the Fed. Most folks will benefit more from the Fed rate cuts than the $600. Interest rates drop on credit cards, equity loans, mortgage payments, etc.

But, if you believe otherwise, consider this:

Everything was fine when the Republicans had control of the White House, the House, and the Senate from 2003-2006.

2001-2002 was ugly, but the Democrats had the Senate then. And something terrible happened to this country in January 2007: The Democrats took control of both the House and Senate.

Just checking- who is the president now, during the time when the subprime mortgage bubble burst? Is it confirmed that it is George W. Bush? Good. I wouldn’t want it to escape people’s attention that this mess well and truly occurred ON HIS WATCH! Can’t blame this on Clinton this time. If it’s the media’s fault, then you’ve failed to control the message getting out to the media. After all, their job is just to repeat, verbatim, what you hand them. Stenographers, you know. BTW, does anybody actually still use shorthand- the Gregg method??

  91. notinKansas Says:

    Turdblossom. What a tool!

I never have watched ‘fox news’, but my Newsweek subscription has been cancelled.

    Facts mean nothing, anymore…

  93. EdgeOnIt Says:

Hoover blinded himself to the worlds economic decline after WWI, then it hit the U.S. in 1929. I think Hoover genuinely wanted to help right things by smaller government in the election of 1933, but F.D.R. knew that we must also fix our infrastructure for peace time. Now, the only thing we really have to fear now, is the war of economic fears that the Neo-cons are playing through the media. I don’t think, bottom line, that even THEY are angling for a market collapse!

  94. Bozo The Neoclown Says:

It’s fun to watch the neoclowns spin this issue. Fact of the matter is, it’s time to pay for the coward of crawfords credit card economy and like the slime they are, they don’t want to pay their bills, they want to pass the buck to someone else.

  95. Ms_Joanne Says:

I am overseas now and saw nothing in any MSM (US or UK) about a protest in Berkeley. I don’t read Dutch so I can’t tell if they have anything but I am sure the folks I am working with here would have said something in all our discussions.

As for KKK…can we just KKKill him already? I am tired of seeing his lying a$$ face on television. Tony Snow got his just rewards for his level of lying. When is god going to intervene against this a$$hole?

    Oh, right…nevermind.

  96. Uncle Ho Says:

Funny, for all the talk about the need for personal responsibility and accountability, everything that goes wrong is ALWAYS someone else’s fault. NEVER is the Chimp-in-chief or his policies are to blame.

  97. ichabod Says:

The liberal media is a myth perpetuated by people who don’t want to accept responsibility for their own actions. They love it when the media pays some attention to them, but let a little trouble arise, and then blame it on the “liberal” media.

Liberal and Conservative are two words that should be stricken from the English language, nobody knows the difference anymore. I am sick of it.

  98. Winski Says:

And his economics degree is from where??? Oh that’s right…texas…huummm…. STFU!!!

  99. kierkegaard409 Says:

I was really up in arms when I first read what he said. But I’ve had to re-think my position totally after seeing that he said it on the Bill O’Rile-up show. And I know that Billy never allows any spin in his zone.

Hmmm. I don’t think Rove ever completed his college “edumacation” — I think I remember that he dropped out of college… just goes to show what just “a little” knowledge can do to destroy a country.

  101. christopher wiwi Says:

As long as he`s on Faux news i`ll never have to lookat his fat little lying boot licking, blame everyone else BUSHCO crime family member face .This guy was the mastermind behind the bush campaign what a chimp(chump). For such a person as this to sink this low to blame the media it just shows us that REICH WINGERS don`t want the left to know what`s really going on because we will more informed and a more informed public is going to VOTE for a DEMOCRAT.A more informed public is more LIBERAL .Did I just say that?

  102. Stone2126 Says:

  103. christopher wiwi Says:
