Encounter with Rove inspires Sheryl Crow’s new album.

Singer Sheryl Crow’s new album “Detours” is inspired by her run-in with Karl Rove last year at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Crow sought to convince Rove about the need to take action on global warming, and Rove responded, “I don’t work for you, I work for the American people.” Crow’s new album contains tracks like “God Bless This Mess” and “Make It Go Away (Radiation Song).” Recalling her encounter with Rove, she told Rolling Stone:

I’m shaking even talking about it again. I feel like I got his stink on me. To have someone bring you to a height of your anger and frustration, and to be shot down that way – it was a pivotal moment for me. It became the impetus for making this record so political.

I think that’s an excellent idea, GSD!

It’s a concept that’s a win-win for the GOP: they prove to America either a) how great things are in Iraq or b) how brave and manly they are

    AND

they get to abandon Minneapolis, with its trademark collapsed bridge symbolizing the failure of BushCo to invest in infrastructure back home.

I don’t see how they can refuse!

What’s the music industry trade group suing folks who do downloads for free? Perhaps someone should forward Gin’s comment to them. It’s costing some of the people being sued something like $3,500 per SONG.

Wonder if Gin has other stuff on his computer like that, apart from the S&M porn? Could git expensive, no?

    THINK

    (M. Jagger/K. Richards)

I’m givin’ you a piece of my mind.
There no charge of any kind.
    Try a very simple test.
You should just retrace your steps.
And think back, back a little bit baby.
    Back, back alright.
    Think, think, think back baby.
Think, think back a bit girl.
    Think, think, think back baby.
Tell me who’s fault was that, babe?
Tell me who’s fault was that, babe?
    Think about a year ago.
How we lived I’ll never know.
    Connin’ people for a dime.
Here’s another piece of my mind.
And think back, back a little bit baby.
    Back, back alright.
    Think, think, think back baby.
Think, think back a bit girl.
    Think, think, think back baby.
Tell me who’s fault was that, babe?
Tell me who’s fault was that, babe?
    Take a look inside yourself.
    You’re not really someone else.
Still, I am the same old me.
    You say I lack maturity.
But think back, back a little bit baby.
    Back, back, alright!
    We’re not children anymore.
We don’t need to play with toys.
Take a look and you will find
You’re gettin’ old before your time.
But think back, back a little bit baby.
    Back, back alright.
    Think, think, think back baby.
Think, think I said back a bit girl.
    Think, think, think back baby.
Tell me who’s fault was that, babe?
Tell me who’s fault was that, babe?
    I said think.
You’d better think back a little bit.
    I said think.
What about last year and the year before?
    I said think.
    You promised me so much.
    I said think.
    Doncha ‘member what you said?

This issue with Rove and his particular brand of modern conservative is this un-american idea that some Americans are not really Americans. When he said he works for the American people, he of course knows that she is a U.S. citizen, so that’s simply another slap in the face. God, it’s just going to be a relief when people like Rove are out of government.

That said, invoking the stones reminds me of this Bob Dylan concert I went to last year. I have 5 full bob dylan albums on my Ipod and I even have Blonde on Blonde on cassette, but going to that show depressed me.

deebaser, Some would say Tiki retired TOO soon. Instead of participating in perhaps the greatest Super Bowl upset of all time this year, he was on the golf course….

(Then again, who knows if the Giants would have won if Tiki had still been on the team?)

  94. missmolly says:

I can see there are many opinions when it comes to Sheryl Crow’s music. I admit I don’t know much about her stuff, but I did like her in “De-Lovely”.

I think the quality of her music is irrelevant. For Rove to say “I don’t work for you; I work for the American people,” was beyond the pale no matter what her music sounds like, no matter how famous she is, and no matter what her political leanings are. What was Rove saying — that she’s not “American people”?

I may just have to go out and buy her album.

  95. The Republic of Stupidity says:

There’s a difference between having a contrary opinion and posting the kind of comment that got ct zapped this morning. I’ve had my run-ins w/ some of the regulars over the language used here, and so it goes.

Free speech is a strange and puzzling substance, but some comments are just too tasteless to tolerate, like ct’s was.

Silencing the opposistion is un 1st Amendment. You know the document that you love throw around when it suits your argument. ROTFL…ROTFL…ROTFL

    Comment by Southern Man

If the ‘opposition’ arguments had any merit, then the debate would continue. When the ‘opposition’ fouls the thread, then they get flagged. It is courtesy and decorum – not a first amendment issue. If you – or anyone else wants to foul a thread, do it somewhere else.

It’s funny the right side knows about the Constitution and Bill of Rights when it is THEIR rights getting abused. Hmmm, that seems weird to me.

  97. Nature Rules says:

That said, invoking the stones reminds me of this Bob Dylan concert I went to last year. I have 5 full bob dylan albums on my Ipod and I even have Blonde on Blonde on cassette, but going to that show depressed me.

    Comment by deebaser — February 13, 2008 @ 2:47 pm

I saw Dylan in the late 80’s and he was so drunk (or something) that he couldn’t find the mike stand on several occasions, slurred lyrics and missed lines. That said, I was in no shape to pass judgment myself and my friends and I had a night that we won’t forget anytime soon. I’d go seem him again.

  98. ralph the wonder llama says:

So why do people like RHF, Lefty Patriot, and a few others who abuse the rules on a daily basis not get the same treatment?

    Comment by Southern Man — February 13, 2008 @ 3:56 pm

You have every right to flag them, Southern Mammal. Get your buddies Gigi, c**t and Jason to help you.

If you would make more coherent arguments, you’d get more respect around here.

If your nephew was told that story about “one square of toilet paper” and thought it was for real, it looks like the strain of family intelligence level got passed down to him too. Poor kid.

Here’s where the whole story started:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sheryl-crow/laurie-and-sheryl-go-to-s_b_46320.html

If you read this blog entry, and still think Sheryl Crow was doing anything but making a joke at the expense of herself and other environmentalists, you’ve got bigger problems than your comments here suggest.

No, I take that back. It means you have exactly the same problems that your comments here suggest.

Bob Dylan sounded like he hadn’t listened to a Bob Dylan album in 15 years. There were a few songs that I didn’t even know what they were until the second chorus… like all along the watch towers….

There is so much wrong with the above I had to quote it for the lulz

  101. Exley says:

    #106, 109,

I was at a Springsteen concert back in 2004 (I think) at Shea Stadium and Dylan got on stage and sang along with the Boss on a number. It was pretty cool to see two legends performing together like that.

  102. StratRat says:

So why do people like RHF, Lefty Patriot, and a few others who abuse the rules on a daily basis not get the same treatment? And why do some of you tolerate them, when they make reasonable people like you and Molly look bad.

    Comment by Southern Man

Actually, I appreciate you calling me reasonable – most would disagree with you :) I wish I could answer that question for you, I cannot.

I don’t so much mind the bad language or dis-respect. I mind when the topic gets whacked off track – and even I am guilty of that from time to time.

Even though you and I, or Exley, and I don’t see things the same way, it would be kinda lonely around here at TP if you both were not part of the discussion.

I could see how that would be great. Sitting through an entire Dylan show? Ehhh, not so much.

And the Stones? Yeah, yeah, Exile on Main St., blah blah, but the last album of theirs that I actually bought? Aftermath. All my friends went off to Altamont and I stayed home, mostly because I wasn’t interested in sitting with in that sh!thole with a half million people, no shade, inadequate sanitation just to see the Stones. And they haven’t gotten better.

  104. bilbobaggins says:

They condem Bush for breaking all the rules, but are hypocrites for not abiding by the rules set forth by TP. They are in a way, just like Bush. Abusing rules set forth by any establishment is what it is, breaking the rules.
    Comment by Southern Man

So perhaps the fool tool troll S&M can tell us what rules these people are breaking. Are they stinking up the place? Are they posting strictly for the purpose of disrupting threads? What is it these regulars are doing that would rate their being banned?

  106. Exley says:

    StratRat,

“I mind when the topic gets whacked off track – and even I am guilty of that from time to time.”

Agreed, but sometimes, topics just lend themselves to going off-track….Take this thread, for example. It was almost inevitable it would turn at some point into an off-topic discussion of music.

    Comment by deebaser — February 13, 2008 @ 4:07 pm

Actually at the time it was mary-jane rather than booze and if I see him again I doubt if I would be on any drug – even cigarettes (yeah). After my first concert experience with Dylan I found out that he often was (or is even now I don’t know) under some influence and that he often changed his songs – whether it was the timing or lyrics or emphasis on certain instruments. Clearly his band was in on the alterations. For this reason I think it would be even more entertaining to see. He is an artist afterall and it’s his art.

Anyway, Dylan is one of the few people I would go see live as I’m not a concert goer these days.

Cheers deebaser, I’m on holidays in New York and I’ve got other interests these days.

Karl Rove is such a pathetic, irrelevant little man. You obviously had him backed into a corner that night, and he was intimidated beyond belief! He has always hid in the dark corners of any room he’s in, because every attempt to appear in public is a gruesome failure! No one wants to read his book, no one wants him speaking at their affairs! He’ll just have to live out the last few years of his failed existence at Faux News, contributing to their never never land!

I don’t remember whether that particularly stupid decision (to use the Angels for security) was publicized in advance, but it would definitely have been a factor.

    Idiots.

If Gin’s thick enough to use limewire, then RIAA won’t long in catching him.

Thanks for the heads up on Sheryl new album…Not out here in the UK until 18-2-2008 but I’ve just pre-ordered it.

The stink she smells is the result of her conservation of toilet paper.

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler — February 13, 2008 @ 2:09 pm

“If you use your left hand for wiping, and then wash it off, you save trees.” My nephew was told this in his science class at a public school last week. A girl in his class stated that she heard that Crowe was doing this. Simple minds will follow simple people. I guess spreading disease and harmful bacteria trump trees.

    Comment by Southern Man — February 13, 2008 @ 3:41 pm

looks like the two experts on stink have weighed in. which hand for you, SM, or do you have Jason Hitler use his tongue?

You’re a weak, sad example of a typical wingnut loser, the both of y8ou. This is all you have for a social life? Not surprising.
