White House: Congress Caving To ‘The Fantasies Of Left-Wing Bloggers’

bush434.jpgThe White House has experienced difficulties moving its ill-conceived national security priorities through Congress. Yesterday, the Senate passed legislation banning waterboarding, defying a Bush veto threat. Also, House leaders have said they will not approve the Protect America Act with immunity for telecom companies.

After the Senate banned waterboarding yesterday, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino claimed the “left wing” was trying to overtake the intelligence community:

They’ll have to ask themselves, ‘Do you trust the intelligence community more than you trust Democrats who are beholden to their left-wing?‘ And that’s the debate that this country is going to have.

Perino also attacked Congress for holding a contempt of Congress vote on White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers instead of expanding Bush’s surveillance powers:

The American people will find it baffling that on a day that House leaders are trying to put off passing critical legislation to keep us safer from the threat of foreign terrorists overseas, they are spending scarce time to become the first congress in history to bring contempt charges against a president’s chief of staff and lawyer. … The ‘people’s House’ should reflect the priorities of the American people, not the fantasies of left-wing bloggers.

The line is a familiar one. When the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington revealed that the White House had destroyed millions of e-mails, Perino shrugged them off as the accusations of a “left-wing” group — but she later backtracked.

Congress’s priorities are reflected by the will of the public. A recent CNN poll showed that 68 percent of Americans said waterboarding was torture, and 58% said the U.S. should not use the technique. A January ACLU poll found 57 percent of likely voters opposed telecom immunity, compared to just a third who supported it.

Will someone in the press corps PLEASE ask Perino why it takes 200 man hours to work up a warrant for a domestic-international call, resulting in Bush bypassing the FISA court because “there is not enough time,” yet he has no problem going to the FISA court for a domestic-domestic call, which could very easily be to-from two terrorists currently in America.

  9. Bad Eye says:

Hey, Dana! The left-wing bloggers ARE American people, yet it seems you would do anything in your power to dismiss them because they are, you know, lefties.

Furthermore, blogging is just one way we are trying to get the attention of those in Congress, ’cause Lord knows many of them don’t give a damn about the e-mails and letters that we send them.

Dana, darling, we want the American people who are otherwise ignorant of the goings-on in Washington to ask why Bush demands immunity for the telcos who have supposedly done nothing wrong, and threatens America with images of another terrorist attack, yet he has no problem pulling out his veto pen if he does not get what he wants, which would also prevent surveillance from continuing.

Well, maybe it is the first time in history (it actually isn’t) that they need to bring contempt charges against the president’s chief of staff and lawyer is because it is the first time in history that the Chief of Staff and Lawyer have defied congress and ignored a subpoena.

And, here are the facts about the FISA bill:

    1) The Republicans have been stalling debate on the FISA bill for weeks.

    2) The Republicans interrupted the memorial service for Tom Lantos demanding a vote on FISA when they knew that the vote on contempt was slated for today (how classy of them)

    3) Then they demand to have a vote on the day before a vacation (again), threatening an “imminent attack” (again), and this time the Democrats didn’t let them get away with it.

    4) The Democrats had offered to extend the FISA bill again, so that we didn’t have to worry about an “imminent attack”, but the Republicans turned down the extension.

So, who will be to blame if we are attacked? The Republicans since they put protecting the Telcoms over protecting the citizens of this country.

  11. jb says:

Bush wants immunity for his own sorry ass. Anybody interested in what they are actually doing in Washington has now become a left wing group.

The President has said that American lives will be sacrificed if Congress does not change FISA. But he has also said that he will veto any FISA bill that does not grant retro-active immunity. No immunity, no FISA bill. So if we take the President at his word, he’s willing to let Americans die to protect the phone companies.

    Which one is it cons?

Me thinks Dana must be loading her coffee cup with libation or LSD at those White House press conferences. 32. Guido OBGYN Lover says:

Now, the president asserts that the expiration of the protect America act will pose a danger to our country. The former National Security Council advisor on terrorism says that’s not true. Former assistant attorney general says that’s not true. Numerous others, and the chairman, has asserted that’s not true. Why is that not true? Because FISA will remain in effect. The authority given under the protect America act remains in effect. And if there are new targets, the FISA court has full authority to give every authority to the administration to act. So i tell my friends, we are pursuing the politics of fear. Unfounded fear. 435 members of this house and every one of us, every one of us wants to keep America and Americans safe. Not one of us — not one of us wants to subject America or Americans to danger. The president’s assertion is wrong. I say it categorically. The president’s assertion is wrong.

I agree. “Reaching out” and compromising conservative principles will get us destroyed in the election.
We need someone who is not afraid to take on the MSM, such as what Rush Limbaugh or Laura Ingraham do every day, and who is able to communicate conservative principles, just as they do so effectively. President Bush treated the MSM way too nicely. Also, the GOP needs to run a lot of negative ads and be ruthless, just like the Dems.
A “civilized election” will benefit the Dems, just like it did in 1996.

I’m not, never have been a Republican, but I’ve always voted that way because the alternative was so much worse. Now with McCain, there is no alternative. And I didn’t notice that anybody has even thought about what will happen if he loses – I, and many, many, other conservatives, vowed never to vote for McCain. I’m afraid that a lot of McCainiacs will feel the same way about Romney. Either way, the Democrats win this election, probably the next, and with them quite possibly a filibuster-proof Senate. The GOP is looking like it will return to the dark days of the 70’s, when they barely had enough members in the House for a bridge table.

I definitely did. Their tone and mood surprised me! I would venture 75% of the comments were like those I pasted. The depression hung in the air.

I have not really felt that kind of emotion here from the regulars, even though we SHOULD be severely depressed after 7 years of watching our country get dragged through the mud. But theat is the difference between us and them. We handle adversity well. They crumble at the least amount of pressure.

Which is exactly what I have been questioning since the deal with the telcos became public. There is no way you can spot a terrorist simply by looking at who tens of millions of people have been calling. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Bush (or another admin official) say that they weren’t collecting the names of phone company customers…only the phone numbers and calling patterns?

But…let’s say that someone in the government has the cell phone numbers of certain people like, oh, members of Congress. And they want to know who’s been calling who.

Now, if you follow the law and get a warrant and ask for all the records of a certain number (which just happens to belong to, say, John Kerry, but you don’t reveal that info to the telco), and then do this for, oh, every member of Congress, odds are that someone is going to take a peep at who the numbers belong to. Busted!

But, if you say “Give us the records of all of your customers because we need to track terrorists and prevent another attack,” then it doesn’t look as suspicious.

So now Bush and Co. know who members of Congress have been talking to, and all they gotta do is start monitoring the phone calls, looking for those *ahem* key words that might “signify an impending attack.”

Seems to me that what scares the political establishment most about bloggers – of whatever “wing” you like – is that blogging represents unfiltered dialogue, which directly threatens their ability to control the terms of public discourse.

Those elected officials who know how to work with and relate to the blogosphere will be the more successful of politicos to come. The environment has changed, and candidates dismiss or diss the blogosphere at their peril.

Anyone catch Lee Siegel on “The Daily Show” tonight, flogging his new book? There he was blaming the medium (the Internet) for what he sees as the message (impersonal, uncertain, not credible) and its overall degradation of human discourse overall, when he himself was suspended from his column in The New Republic after making comments supportive of his authorial self on his own TNR blog, as the sockpuppet “sprezzatura.”

Given Barack Obama’s overtaking Hillary Clinton in the primary race, the ugly side of the GOP Establishment will eventually show. Confident in their eventual success at using race-baiting, especially in the South against Obama, these operatives are just salivating in hopes of making very distasteful slants against African-Americans with code word phrases and suggestive hints at racism in TV ads (i.e. the Harold Ford Playboy Mansion ad).

Those are exactly the types of statements that turn Independents off. Given that the GOP is based purely on image and propaganda, it would not serve them well to actually run on the issues instead of showing their true face.

Nor will I. And a step further, I will also not live in fear of some pseudo “terrorists” created by my government to scare me into giving up my rights and the rights of my fellow Americans. Do not be afraid – the fascists have more fear-mongering – and possible attacks to keep us Americans in line. Stick together and be good.

Exactly. The “War on Terror” is a load of crap. It’s unwinnable, by design.

There will always be radicalized groups willing and able to use violence to advance their political aims, be they radical Maoists in Nepal or radical Islamists in Algeria or brainwashed child soldiers in Uganda. These aren’t trumped-up pseudoterrorists – they’re real. And they’re often inadvertently created by our government when we prop up dictators.

There are some pretty brutal governments out there, too – just look at Kenya, Sudan, Uzbekistan, China, Egypt, and plenty of others. They spread terror among the people within their borders, and we’re not invading them anytime soon. Sometimes they even get a nod and a wink from our government.

The only way to fight both kinds of terror is through diplomacy and soft power. Military intervention only breeds it. We need a new crop of leaders in power who recognize this.

Actually, what has REALLY been happening over the last several years is Congress caving in to the fantasies of the White House….without questioning.

  273. Guido OBGYN Lover says:

DNI McConnell has already been on NPR this morning (Friday) talking about how critical it is we give retro immunity to Telcos.

  274. leftcoast says:

The real threat to America is the systematic erosion of the checks and balances of our government and the Administration’s arrogant disregard for the Constitution.

Bush uses these “show-down” moments to drag out the fear wagon. Before this election cycle is over you can rest assured Bush Co. will ratchet the fear level to new heights.

  275. Ms_Joanne says:

First off, there is no doubt in my mind that we, as a country, are going to get hit by terrorism again. It’s a matter of fact. (Whether our government is the one doing it…I wouldn’t put it past them. Something about Bush and his tirade about URGERT URGENT NOW NOW NOW OR ELSE has me creeped out.) Anyone who thinks that we are immune or that it won’t happen is delusional. It’s how those people operate.

The War on Terror is a farce. Nothing they do – well, perhaps reading the daily presidental briefings and intel reports might help, but that is past this admin’s abilities – is going to stop it. It might delay it, but not stop it.

They don’t hate us for our “freedoms” which we no longer have, they hate us because we interfere with their lives in ways that are not good for them, which in turn makes them not good for us. (Interesting read about 21st century conflict here: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/14/05542/7695 ) I doubt we will stop doing that because it’s what we do best. We give Saddam weapons and then say don’t use them. We give Pakistan nukes and then chide them. WE, our government, is a great cause of suffering around the world. And WE, THE PEOPLE are now reaping the “rewards” of those in power.

    Basically, we’re f()cked.

As for the Middle East liking Romney, I think the people who have “voted” on Al Jazeera were from Israel, for those are the only people in the ME that I can think of what would want to double Gitmo and have continuing war.

    Just MHO.

  276. whatevah says:

ahh….the power of the pen. Looks like left wing bloggers are more in touch with the pulse of america than congress and el jefe combined!

It’s not the left wing bloggers which this white house has to fear; it’s the right to free speech which is the only right which Bushitco hasn’t usurped from the people. And it’s not that he hasn’t tried to shut down the internet because he has. He knows it’s the last bastion of free speech left and has become a thorn in his side.

Why do you think so many GOPigs are leaving congress in droves? If I’m being strictly altruistic, I’d love to think that it’s because they’ve become disgusted with their party and politics in Washington; if I’m being cynical (and perhaps more accurate) then I’d have to say that they’re “running scared” because they can no longer get away with their chicanery and shenanigans any longer.

The internet has made it damn near impossible for these thugs to do business as usual without being “outed” immediately.

  277. whatevah says:

Ms Joanne: The Bush crime cabal’s transparency is laughable. Just last week the AIPAC insider (Joe liverlips Lieberman) who heads the Nat’l Security committee called for a “trial run” to see how prepared this country is for a nuclear attack….hmmmmm…..getting ready for another false flag and showing their hand in error? One has to wonder. It’s been done before and it may be their only card left in the waning GOPig deck.

  278. whatevah says:

As for retro immunity, if the Dems cave in and throw away our rights that easily, they know they may lose in 08 because the people will never let them forget it. And if they stand firm, they can parrot Keith Olberman’s great words last evening (crooksandliars.com). He stated that Bush is a fascist because he’d rather protect the telecoms (big business) than americans. He vetoed the bill so he can’t be too concerned about keeping us safe, can he? Besides, he has a full year during which the bill can still be enforced – it doesn’t expire immediately.

So it would be George W. Bush who would be “responsible” if this country is attacked and not congress (or the dems as they’re painting it). He’s the one who vetoed the bill without telecom immunity.

Besides, he won’t even tell congress what these telecoms did so how can congress even begin to give them immunity? Immunity – for what? This is a high crime and he needs to be punished for it. During the time he was violating our rights he was on television giving speeches about how he is not “spying on americans without a warrant”. Not only did he break the law by spying illegally; he lied about it repeatedly while he was breaking the law. And what was Nixon impeached for??? Where has the morality and conviction of this country gone since then? How many lies has Bush told us now?? Who’s counting? It makes one’s head spin.

So his talking head morons had better be careful what they’re spinning. The people need to hold these propagandists (like McConnell) accountable for their lies as well and prosecute them along with the Bush cabal.

It’s Bush and his cadre of fools whom we have to fear in this country. It’s Bush and his cadre of fools who have hijacked our constitution and rights. It’s Bush and his cadre of fools who will be solely and totally responsible for any lapse in protection he claims the rejection of telecom immunity may present.

BUSH AND BUSH ALONE IS TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE AND THE BUCK STOPS AT HIS DESK – AS IT ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL. BUSH DOESN’T GET A GET OUT JAIL FREE PASS ON THIS ONE.

  280. Ms_Joanne says:

The Bush crime cabal’s transparency is laughable.

Ah, to us, the informed, it is. When that next attack comes, how well will Bobby Jo in Godforsakenland understand? It’s those people who the GOP always go to when they scream DADDY’S HERE TO PROTECT YOU for those people in Nowhereville, US are the ones who know so little, watch FOX for all their wisdom, and can’t or don’t read. They accept everything at face value and with our MSM so out of touch and out for corporate greed (and power?) only, it takes alot of desire to really learn what’s going on. And this is where all the gooper talking points (of bull$shit) comes into play.

If we don’t do something to educate our masses, we are going to be in a world of hurt with it getting worse daily.

  281. Ms_Joanne says:

Oh, and when I talk about a world of hurt, I am not talking only politically. I am talking about our population and how or whether said population will survive or thrive. Big difference.

  282. jpopphan says:

Would that there were Democrats who would listen to the “left wing”. Maybe then we’d have people working for universal healthcare, a nationalized energy industry that serves the people instead of investors, and publicly-funded elections so that corporate money and lobbyists are forced out of the process.

Were that Congress truly would be “the people’s House” where OUR interests are represented and not just those of the rich and powerful.

  284. Dirty Hippie says:

If I did nothing wrong, then I have nothing to fear from increased surveillance powers of the “unitary executive”. And if they did nothing wrong, they don’t need immunity from prosecution.

They’re pushing so hard for it because they know they’re screwed. If the bill expires and the old FISA was restored, are we more at risk? I don’t think so. But I wouldn’t put it past this Administration to create an “I told you so” incident to ratchet up fear and make the Dems look bad for 08′. It’s about all they have left in their sleazy playbook. They’re that heinous, that fascistic.

  285. tombaker says:

To pretend that the opposition has been anything but ignored and spurned is the very height of dishonesty.
