Huckabee: ‘Running For Office Is Sort Of Like Being Waterboarded’»

This morning, CNN ran a story “tracking the strain furious campaigning puts on the human body” for the presidential candidates. During the segment, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee joked that his campaign schedule is not providing enough time to sleep and that, for him, is “like being waterboarded”:

HUCKABEE: I’m finding just out how long I can go sleep deprived. You know, running for office is sort of like being waterboarded, I think.

Watch it:

A recent CNN article on the same subject also noted Huckabee’s comments and added: “He was only half-kidding.” But waterboarding is torture, illegal under both U.S. and international law, and certainly nothing to joke about.

Unfortunately, Huckabee is not the first Republican presidential candidate to compare lack of sleep and torture in jest. Last year, former New York City mayor (and current waterboarding supporter) Rudy Giuliani called liberals “silly” for describing “sleep deprivation” as torture, joking that “on that theory, I’m getting tortured running for president of the United States.

Digg it!

Is this the same twit who compared going on a diet like being a concentration camp run by Democrats?

What is wrong w/ these folks?

On the other hand, it sure explains why the GOOP is disintegrating before our very eyes.

  2. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Anyone wanna bet that Huckelberry and McPander get into a pissin’ match on the campaign trail and start trying to brag about who would be willing to waterboard someone faster?

How would you know, you hypochristian, hillbilly dickhead?! Have you been waterboarded lately?

I propose all republicans who DON’T think waterboarding is torture should be forcibly tied down and waterboarded themselves. All of them. In fact, put it live on national TV. We’ll see if these a**holes sing the same tune afterward.

It speaks volumes that an amazing cruel lunatic such as this has actually held public office and is one of the more serious contenders for the republican Presidential nomination. My how far this country has fallen . . . and continues to fall.

If Huckabee and Lie-berman find waterboarding so innocuous, why don’t they volunteer for an exhibition of the practice to demonstrate to the public how harmless it is?

  16. muckmac Says:

“running for office is sort of like being waterboarded, I think.”

See, there was his first factual error. Just by saying running for office is like being waterboarded means by definition, he does not think, he just opens his fat yap and says whatever comes out.

Hey Huck, waterboarding makes baby Jesus cry. You think about that.

  19. HMan Says:

The Republic of Stupidity: People like John McCain and Mike Huckabee are actually people who denounce torture. John McCain actually was tortured in a Vietnam POW camp, and Huckabee explicitly defers to McCain and calls waterboarding torture.

Did you all miss the memo? McCain regularly jokes about it, but he’s dead serious about waterboarding being torture. By deferring to McCain on this issue, Huckabee is one wise dude. You guys need to be a little better informed!

  21. Dirty Hippie Says:

The Squirrel Eater has a weird sense of humor. Until you submit to being waterboarded, you have no business making such a moronic comparison.
Go back to playing Sweet Home Alabama. The only job you are remotely qualified for is bass player in a lame cover band at a roadhouse in Dumbassistan. Beered up, dentally challenged tweakers and clueless hosebags are your people.

  22. RUCerious Says:

I don’t see why he even keeps up the pretense of being a viable candidate.
Take a nap, Huckster, it’s over.

  24. HMan Says:

Dirty Hippie, it seem like you have no business making statement since you’ve never run for the presidency. Just saying….

Currently, there are no republicans running for president who thinks waterboarding is innocuous. McCain, Huckabee, and Paul all say waterboarding is torture. Get with the program.

  25. pieboy Says:

The biblethumpers cannot find humor in the Good Book, because there isn’t. Nor is there humor in ego-driven power politics. When a slim sense of humility meets a fat sense of hubris, you get a Republican candidate.

  28. dasm Says:

The stupidity of this man knows no bounds. Sleep deprivation, used as torture, involves being physically forced to stay awake for days on end, often with loud, obnoxious music blaring. This moron’s ’sleep deprivation’ is completely voluntary. And comparing what he’s doing to someone who, through torture, is made to believe they are dying from drowning? We all lack the sleep we need sometimes, Huck, but to compare it to the torture the Bush admin. inflicts is simply disgusting. After WW2 several Japanese people were convicted of war crimes and executed for waterboarding. So, Huck, who gets executed for making you lose a few hours sleep? And the creepy people who say joking about waterboarding is okay– you are then saying that joking about war crimes resulting in execution is an okay thing to do. Think about it instead of blindly supporting people who support or joke about torture.

    Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration has instructed U.S. diplomats abroad to defend its decision to seek the death penalty for six Guantanamo Bay detainees accused in the Sept. 11 attacks by recalling the executions of Nazi war criminals after World War II.

  30. pieboy Says:

Let’s get back to real definitions.”Waterboarding” has been defined for decades as “Water Torture”. An occupation of a country is defined as when there is a sovereign government in place and another commands the policies and administration of the state… I think Iraq had elections- are they now a sovereign nation?

So we have become torturers and occupiers- not warriors.

    Hman- your comments?

Sorry, but yer more than a little confused.

When Huckleberry compares campaigning w/ torture, it’s digusting and just shows how out of touch he, and you, are w/ reality. As for McPander,

Maverick Fails The Test: McCain Votes Against Waterboarding Ban

Mr. McCain, a former prisoner of war, has consistently voiced opposition to waterboarding and other methods that critics say is a form torture. But the Republicans, confident of a White House veto, did not mount the challenge. Mr. McCain voted “no” on Wednesday afternoon.

When confronted today with the decision of whether to stick with his conscience or cave to the right wing, McCain chose to ditch his principles and instead vote to preserve waterboarding:

Can’t imagine how yer reasonong works, but, hey, yer a troll. Yer not expected to amke the least bit of sense.

the U.S. is using NATO soldiers as mercenaries to try to counter a resurgent Taliban. Europeans are tiring of their role as an European proxy for America’s legions, and the NATO commander speaks of a NATO defeat in Afghanistan.

NATO was an alliance created to resist a Soviet invasion of Europe. The U.S. has kept an unnecessary NATO alive for 18 years as a source of troops for its foreign adventures. Europeans dislike being mercenaries for an American empire, especially one that slaughters civilians.

If the U.S. now needs foreign troops to save its bacon in these two lost wars, it should demand them from Israel. Israel is why the U.S. is at war in the Middle East. Let Israel supply the troops. The neocons who dominated the Bush regime and took America to illegal wars are allied with the extreme right-wing government of Israel.

Every last one of them should be immediately arrested for high treason. Neonconservatives are America’s greatest enemies, and they control our government! All Americans have to show for six years of Bush’s “war on terror” is an incipient police state.

And waterboarding is in what chapter and verse of the Bible?

  62. jpopphan Says:

Yet another very clear reason why this man has no business whatsoever being President, Vice President or even Chief Dog Catcher.

I’d love to see Huckabee meet in person some of the people who have actually been waterboarded for real - and no I don’t mean those folks in our military and security services who undergo it with the comfort that their comrades will stop before it goes too far, but rather people who have had the torture performed on them for real, with no safeties. Tell some of those people who survived torture by the Khmer Rouge that their torture was just like running for the US presidency. Yeah, just try that with a straight face Huckaberry and see how fast you get that grin slapped off of it.
