McCain ‘overstates his criticisms of Rumsfeld.’

On the stump, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has repeatedly bragged about calling for Donald Rumsfeld’s resignation as Defense Secretary. “I’m the only one that said that Rumsfeld had to go,” said McCain on Jan. 30. Yet as the Washington Post reports today, that claim isn’t quite true:

The trick is that he never did, at least not publicly. The senator from Arizona was a tough critic of Rumsfeld and more than once said that he had no confidence in the Pentagon chief in the two years before Bush finally dumped Rumsfeld in November 2006. But even as he was criticizing Rumsfeld, McCain typically stopped short of calling for the Pentagon chief to step down. [...]

McCain’s false account has been unwittingly incorporated into the narrative he is selling by some news organizations, including The Washington Post.

  2. Angry McAngus says:

What do they mean “unwittingly”? Since when have the so called “mainstream media” not wittingly accepted their mouthpiece role?

  3. Badmoodman says:

Yeah, but when it comes to economic matters, McCain’s a regular John Kenneth Galbraith.

WTF? I was saying that since before 3/24/03!

    Another Republican LIAR for President.

    At least they are consistent.

  8. natisman says:

So now John has to get down and kiss Rummy-Dummys ass. I would have payed for coverage of that one.

Bet ya in captivity they didn’t make him do that.

it’s sad what people do for religion, or money, or power.

  9. Mugsy says:

I am still trying to understand the double-standard that exists for Republicans and Democrats in all its forms.

Had Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama of made such a nonsense claim, the media would be all over them. And as I’ve pointed out to friends & family, if a Democrat had “doubled the price of gasoline” and “lied us into invading Iraq”, then was SO incompetent as to result in 3900 dead soldiers, added $5 TRILLION to the National Debt, pushed the economy into a recession, violated the Constitution nine ways to Sunday, were caught lying about warantlessly wiretapping our phones, passing laws that make it legal to search your home without a warrant, and lost an entire city” with dead bodies floating in the streets of New Orleans, Republicans and the Press would be screaming bloody murder.

But instead, the subject of even holding these people accountable for their lies and outright crimes is considered “extreme”.

  10. The Republic of Stupidity says:

I’m not sure it’s POSSIBLE to overstate criticism of Von Rumsfeld.

  11. republicans are the Fear and Smear Party says:

    Flip-Flop express coming through!

McPain was against saying that Rumsfeld had to go before he was for it.

  12. scytherius says:

McCain wants to be a Republican so he HAS to lie. If you don’t lie routinely, they don’t let you in the Repug Club.

  13. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Damn… you just might be right about that, Scytherius.

  14. CVille Dem says:

Who jokingly said Romney was the candidate of change?

  15. Badger says:

Romney is for Change. He just changed into a McCain supporter.

The Change America wants is a Change in the occupant of the whitehouse.

  16. bilbobaggins says:

Another campaign advertisement has written itself. Obama is not even going to have to write script writers to make his campaign ads. McCain has written them for him.

  17. bilbobaggins says:

    Pander Express?
    Comment by RUCerious

I think the DNC should purchase thousands of small teddy bears wearing a t-shirt saying “Pander Bear McCain” and have a card hanging around its neck that lists all his flip-flops (or at least as many as can be printed on the card). Then sell them for $5.00 to raise money for the party or give them away at campaign stops.

  18. katy says:

    $5.00 ???

then they’d have to be made in china, bilbo…

  19. katy says:

but otherwise, i like the idea…

Speaking of jocks…. Curt Shilling endorses McCain, just like he backed Busch in ‘04.
Red Sox, please trade this guy !!

  22. Badger says:

McCains voluminous and well documented record is probably enough to sink his candidacy. The Democratric candidate will be able to use McCain’s own positions against him…political judo.

But the Democratic Candidate….and it looks like it will be Obama….will need to be more than Against Bush III. To be an effective president, he will need to be FOR things.

America’s Health Care system is broken….everyone knows it….but the ideas presented to FIX it are less than inspiring. Single Payer is the only workable strategy…but the forces allied against it are daunting.

Steve Kagen, a doctor and member of congress from Wisconsin is on the right track. His plan is to End discrimination in Health Insurance.

Don’t be hard on the man. At that age your memory is supposed to be erratic. Chill out. The man is senile.

  24. Doc Rock says:

The media will create the McCain they want for the voters just as it is creating the favored Obama and the unfavored Clinton.

  25. Badger says:

If the media were able to totally manipulate the American voter, we would be seeing a match between Hillary and Giulianni. A couple months ago, this was the “inevitable” choice.

The Media did not fill stadiums to the brim for Obama. Obama did that himself ….with brilliant oratory and a keen sense of what America was looking for.

  26. rogerD says:

    McBush misremembers.

  27. The Shadow says:

John Flip Flopper McCain will do anything or saying anything to get elected. The wheels on the so called straight talk express are flat and he’s become a typical lying politician. This guy has wanted to be President since way back and now that he’s 72 years old he knows this is his last chance. I’m sorry, but I’m not trying to elect my grandfather or anyone his age to be President. We’d have to go to bed everyday wondering whether his going to wake up the next day. We don’t need his VP becoming an accidental President because who knows where he’d take the country.

Sorry Johnny your time has passed, it’s time for a new direction and younger leader. We want change not another 8 years of Bush rule. You hugged him in a cynical attempt to kiss his azz and there’s no place for azz kissers in politics. You couldn’t stand up and be a man without hugging this idiot, you lose buddy.
