“Just outside” Kandahar, Afghanistan today, “a suicide bomber blew himself up in a large crowd gathered at a dogfighting festival,” killing at least 80 people and wounding nearly 100 more. “Kandahar, a former stronghold of the Taliban, has been the scene of some of the country’s worst suicide attacks over the last two years as Taliban insurgents have tried to undermine the government of President Hamid Karzai.”
UPDATE: Reuters says it was “the most deadly attack since the Taliban were ousted in 2001.”
Things must be going great in Afganistan.......they are having dogfighting festivals?? What the hell?
Honestly, I have often thought that sporting events here are very vulnerable. If I were seriously afraid of an attack here I wouldn't go to a game of any kind.
February 17th, 2008 at 9:55 amIt is not clear how many were killed from the bomb and how many were killed from the police firing on the crowd after the bombing.
Just how doe's that work?....If the total count killed doesn't add up to a good enough count it appear's their own police help out so the count is higher...Hummmm, was cheney / bush there.?...Blessings
February 17th, 2008 at 9:57 ammaybe the reason my contract engagement in afghanistan has been delayed is that the universe is looking out for me... ya think...?
February 17th, 2008 at 10:04 amAnd, yes, I DO take it personally

Although in general I would agree, I would pretty much risk it all to watch a live Buzkashi match. What a wild premise for a national sport. Sort of blows are boring ass baseball out of the ballpark
February 17th, 2008 at 10:05 amThe degenerating situation in Afghanistan is directly tied to the diversion of resources from prosecuting the war against Al Qaida and the Taliban to take up Bush's insane war to snuff Saddam, enrich his cronies, and steal Iraq's oil for Chevron, etc.
February 17th, 2008 at 10:32 amAl Qaida in Afghanistan, not AQ in Iraq orchestrated 9/11 and is as likely to orchestrate the next attacks as well. Bush squandered not only an opportunity, but also world wide good will and support for the US and those who support McCain (i.e., Bush III) will only further the cause of anti-American terrorism.
February 17th, 2008 at 10:36 am7 years into the US occupation of Afghanistan and there are large public dogfights and reporters getting sentenced to death for supporting women's rights.
Clearly the mission has been accomplished.

Saudi Arabia's rulers threatened to make it easier for terrorists to attack London unless corruption investigations into their arms deals were halted, according to court documents revealed yesterday.

I would like for them to look us in the eye and try to justify this.
February 17th, 2008 at 10:55 amsounds like some of these jerks got what they deserved. I too hope the dogs survived, except what kind of life would they have. Maybe the Afgans should stage people fighting festivals, I am sure that would draw huge crowds, in as much as they seem to thrive on death and violence. Possibly they could invite our great Decider to participate.

February 17th, 2008 at 11:14 amYa think some one from the media or White House will tell us about PETA?
February 17th, 2008 at 11:28 am#6 Doc Rock: The sadistic, greedy, powermad, megalomaniacs at the Project for the New American Century orchestrated 9-11 by contracting with 'Terrorists R Us' (black op specialist, Osama bin Laden) to deliver about 20 'true believers' to be the scapegoats for that dispicable event. Terrorists are bought and paid for just like mercenaries. It's relatively easy to recruit a potential terrorist in the radical Islamic world. You simply request that he or she do this for Allah or whatever reason and if they refuse you threaten to kill his or her entire family before their very eyes. Great choice, isn't it? Osama is just like any other bullshit artist (Bush, Cheney), they convince others to do their bidding for them. If it's such a wonderful thing to blow yourself up for Allah, not to mention those wonderful 72 dead virgins in Paradise, why hasn't Osama blown himself up? Because he is needed by the PNAC and Bush cabal or, maybe he's just gay.

"why hasn’t Osama blown himself up?"
Because he knows that what's waiting for him "down there" is not 72 virgins, but 72 VIRGINIANS with bats to beat him up!
"Virgins" is a typo that the Muslims didn't notice. Or... may be they can't read that well in the cave...
February 17th, 2008 at 12:39 pmAfghanistan is rapidly degenerating back to its condition in the 1990's, perhaps to an even worse degree this time.
