On the heels of an attack yesterday that was the most deadly since the Taliban was ousted 2001, “another suicide bomber killed 35 civilians at a busy market in” Kandahar, Afghanistan today. “At least 28 people were wounded in the market attack,” including two Canadian soldiers. Additionally, the death toll from Sunday’s blast has risen from 80 to 100.

And this little tidbit in the article, “Kandahar - the Taliban’s former stronghold and Afghanistan’s second largest city - is one of the country’s largest opium poppy producing areas. The province has been the scene of fierce battles between NATO forces, primarily from Canada and the United States, and Taliban fighters over the last two years.
Dog fighting competitions are a popular form of entertainment around Afghanistan. The fights can attract hundreds of spectators who cram into a tight circle around the spectacle. The sport was banned during the Taliban rule.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:13 amSo a market is bombed, in an area that is known for it’s opium-poppy production, and the Taliban are known to have stamped out opium production while in power…
Seems like a slam-dunk.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:17 amAlso, isn’t it odd, that the bloody-handed Taliban banned dog fighting?
If the spectators weren’t allowed to wager, I’ll bet they’ be just fine with it.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:21 amoh, thanks, TP… what an inspirational thread for a monday morning…
did this happen because the dems in congress did not grant
immunity to the telcos? … i wonder…
“Good morning…”
WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE!
February 18th, 2008 at 11:22 amAnd remember, just recently Secretary Gates said
The Taliban no longer occupy any territory in Afghanistan.

Channeling Country Joe?
February 18th, 2008 at 11:24 amre katy:
Yes, it’s the dems’ fault. you can bet there is a large dog fighting constituency in the repub’s base.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:26 amWhile Katy’s statement is true, we will all die, I’m more concerned with how this was allowed to fester. It appears that the mighty Bush and his wise generals ignored the history of the last 400 years relating to Afghanistan and the attempts to conquer this region.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:30 amThe Taliban is blowing them up over there, so they don’t have to blow our childrens up here.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:30 amhellina ~ It also looks like the chymptastic strategy of a weak central government, with regional militias (warlords) in charge is the new surge(ical) tactic for Iraq. It’s worked so well in Afghanistan!
Isn’t that where all those cozym, knitted Afghans are from ?
February 18th, 2008 at 11:32 amBarfly, thanks for the country joe reference. Entirely appropiate, given what’s continuing to go on in Iraq. Here’s a link:

February 18th, 2008 at 11:33 amThe unspoken thing in the article, is that among the other wares for sale, it was probably an opium market, as well.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:34 amIf the U.S. now needs foreign troops to save its bacon in these two lost wars, it should demand them from Israel. Israel is why the U.S. is at war in the Middle East. Let Israel supply the troops. The neocons who dominated the Bush regime and took America to illegal wars are allied with the extreme right-wing government of Israel.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:36 am“Barfly, thanks for the country joe reference. Entirely appropiate, given what’s continuing to go on in Iraq.”
Just change “Iraqistan” for “Viet Nam,” and you’re good to go.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:36 amWith all available U.S. troops tied down in Iraq, the U.S. is using NATO soldiers as mercenaries to try to counter a resurgent Taliban. Europeans are tiring of their role as an European proxy for America’s legions, and the NATO commander speaks of a NATO defeat in Afghanistan.
NATO was an alliance created to resist a Soviet invasion of Europe. The U.S. has kept an unnecessary NATO alive for 18 years as a source of troops for its foreign adventures. Europeans dislike being mercenaries for an American empire, especially one that slaughters civilians.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:38 amright now gates is begging France for more troops
after all the shite about Freedom fries America has the nerve to beg for more troops
What a laughing stock Bush has made of America. What ruination this utter idiot and his supporters have brought to America. What total traitors the neoconservatives are. Every last one of them should be immediately arrested for high treason. Neonconservatives are America’s greatest enemies, and they control our government! All Americans have to show for six years of Bush’s “war on terror” is an incipient police state.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:40 am“What a laughing stock Bush has made of America. What ruination this utter idiot and his supporters have brought to America.”
And like the nanny of a petulant child, we’ll be blamed for all the damage, while we’re cleaning it up.

HERE HERE HERE
February 18th, 2008 at 11:52 amIf America would wake up and see the disasters that Bush has created then those who created/supported his missadventures may very well be held accountable and punished by our laws. But I would settle for America just waking up.
You can’t have a functioning democracy when the majority of it’s citizens refuse to participate.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:54 amWhy did the President choose to cut and run from Afghanistan?

No offense meant, but that is a HORRIBILE idea. Inviting the army of a racist theocratic country into a pre-dominantly Muslim country would make things a heckuva lot worse.

Man the things this planet is doing to keep Bush in a bubble
The minute that maniac is out of power , were out of Iraq and Afghanistan
the only way to gain worldwide respect again ( if there was such a time) is to jail the neocons
February 18th, 2008 at 11:55 amKANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A suicide car bomber targeting a Canadian military convoy killed 37 civilians at a busy market in southern Afghanistan on Monday,
That will go down well with the Afghan public against foreign troops
If the troops had not be using civillian as cover (probably) the bombing would never have happened

Joke eh
February 18th, 2008 at 12:00 pmWe’re not supposed to be talking about Afghanistan. McCain, while being endorsed by Daddy Bush, was talking about how the surge has worked in Iraq that the Democrats were against.
We’re all supposed to stay on script and ignore all incidents that don’t follow the plot line.
February 18th, 2008 at 12:03 pmOnly w and his 30% see the truth that the Taliban is defeated. Our so-called MSM have been given the “Word” by dick cheney (the real decider) and his minions that we must hear only his reality unless there is some huge problem - such as many people getting killed by suicide bombers. As we know, the Taliban resistance, like that in Iraq, must be in “its last throes.” Any day now the Taliban is going to come marching into Kabul with their hands on their heads admitting utter defeat and begging for mercy.

yes, but, it’s the first time for THIS morning’s thread…

“whoopie! we’re all gonna die”…
there is a blurb i hear on AAR… someone, from a movie?, who yells,
“WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE”…
i’m thinking i’ll make a habit of quoting duby’s “good morning”
February 18th, 2008 at 12:53 pmwith my refrain as a daily reminder… whatcha think?
this seems appropriate for this thread:
This is the last verse of a poem called the “British Soldierâ€
When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An’ go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,

Don’t support warriors and their wars.
When parents sop sending their kids off to be sacrificial lambs on the altar of greed is when you are going to see a turnaround in this nation.
Until then it’s going to be like the bumper sticker I saw on the back of an SUV with a Marine Corps sticker on it as well. “killing is good business and business is good”
I was floored when I saw it.
Americans MUST break their chains to miltarism. It’s time to pursue “strength through peace” as the 21st century demands.
