Bush Dismisses Iraq Recession: The War Has ‘Nothing To Do With The Economy’»

This morning on NBC’s Today Show, President Bush denied that the there’s any link between the faltering U.S. economy and $10 billion a month being spent on the Iraq war. In fact, according to Bush, the war is actually helping the economy:

CURRY: You don’t agree with that? It has nothing do with the economy, the war — spending on the war?

BUSH: I don’t think so. I think actually the spending in the war might help with jobs…because we’re buying equipment, and people are working. I think this economy is down because we built too many houses and the economy’s adjusting.

Watch it:

The Iraq war has created jobs — for the administration’s defense contractor allies. Bush’s most recent budget is a windfall for contractors, and between 2000 and 2005, procurement was the “fastest growing component of federal discretionary spending.” (Halliburton has been the biggest beneficiary of the administration’s generosity.)

Five years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, however, national unemployment is going up. Between December 2006 and December 2007, the national unemployment rate increased by 13.6 percent in seasonally adjusted terms, from 4.4 to 5.0 percent. Additionally, 68 percent of the American public believes that redeployment from Iraq would help fix the country’s economic woes.

Digg It!

Transcript:

Some Americans believe that they feel they’re carrying the burden because of this economy.

G. BUSH: Yeah, well…

CURRY: They say we’re suffering because of this.

G. BUSH: … I don’t agree with that.

CURRY: You don’t agree with that? It has nothing do with the economy, the war — spending on the war?

G. BUSH: I don’t think so.

I think actually the spending in the war might help with jobs.

CURRY: Oh, yeah?

G. BUSH: Yeah, because we’re buying equipment, and people are working.

I think this economy is down because we built too many houses and the economy’s adjusting.

Bush has done so well on the economy that he should know what he is saying, what is that he was saying?

  15. Duck Soup Says:

If spending a tril on a war for nothing does nothing bad to the economy, why can’t Bush afford to spend a few tens of millions on healthcare for kids in the bill he kept vetoing? Bush says whatever he thinks he can get away with. He has no beliefs other than whatever he happens to believe is right.

It’s time to move on. There is a reason Obama is winning this Primary. He is winning in states. He is winning in the popular vote. He is winning on delegates, even taking into account those “Super” establishment delegates. The reason is simple. He is the better candidate who can bring all of us together to work towards real and lasting change.

Obama is the most electable Democratic candidate by far. He is the way we take back the White House. The proof is in the polls. He averages 6 points better against McCain than Hillary does. Obama beats McCain in polls. Hillary only ties.

One of McCain’s own top strategists even said he would resign if Obama is the Democratic nominee because he doesn’t want to attack Obama. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ 2008/ 02/ 13/ top-mccain-adviser-ill-_n_86578.html

And, contrary to popular belief, Obama is tougher than Clinton. Of the two candidates, only he had the guts to oppose the Iraq war from the start. Hillary Clinton still hasn’t come to terms with the most important vote of her relatively short-lived political career as an elected official. She still won’t admit she made a mistake on Iraq. She said Bush duped her.

Just last Fall Clinton voted for Bush’s bill to declare Iran’s military to be “terrorists.” This was the equivalent of an unnecessary declaration of war. At the same time Bush was waiving around the image of World War III with Iran in support of his bill, Bush knew about a secret National Intelligence Estimate prepared by the CIA which found that Iran had stopped its nuclear weapons development program in 2003 and probably hadn’t restarted it. Hillary Clinton was duped again. And again she wouldn’t admit she made a mistake. Instead she sent a letter to the White House “clarifying” her position.

Yes, there is a reason the McCain is hoping that Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee. McCain is hoping he can keep independents as well as his own campaign managers from jumping ship because they like Obama. And McCain is hoping he can debate Hillary Clinton on Iraq because her spinning on that issue just is not very convincing.

And Hillary Clinton says she is more prepared and detail oriented than Obama. Once again the proof is in the pudding. Her campaign ran out of money, was unprepared to deal with caucuses and has had to fire a whole bunch of people for poor performance and political low blows. In contrast, Obama’s campaign is well run, well financed (even though they don’t take money from lobbyists while Clinton does), and consistent in its message.

It’s time to vote for the Democratic nominee who is most electable and will make a great President. It’s time to vote for a President who can unify America. Without unity, without hope, there is no chance of real change. Without hope there never would have been civil rights reform. Without hope we never would have come out of the Great Depression. Once again, we have nothing to fear but fear itself. Obama ‘08.

    Yes we can!

PS I came across this post written by someone else and thought it was good so here it is:

Let’s take a closer look at who’s really qualified and or who’s really working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.

These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress http://www.thomas.loc.gov

    Please pass this on

    ========

NY TImes Obama’s record in the Illinois Senate
    http://www.nytimes.com/ imagepages/ 2007/ 07/ 29/ us/ politics/ 20070730_OBAMA_GRAPHIC.html

His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded:

    1. The Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law,
    2. The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law,
    3. The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate,
    4. The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law,
    5. The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.

In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.

An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.

That isn’t quite an apples to apples comparison there chief. You’re comparing Obama’s SPONSORED/COSPONSORED bills to Clinton’s PASSED bills.

C’mon. I haaaaaaaatttteee Hilary and am not entirely sure I’d vote for her in the general, but you do your team a disservice by posting garbage like this.

  23. Evil Spaniard Says:

But, if the cause of the recession is the fact that there are too many houses, wait for the Bush’s answer to the problem: to create a program called something like “Improved House Availability”, dedicated to destroy houses to enhance the economy.

  24. Briseadh na Faire Says:

I’ve posted before, I think it was about 7 out of the last 8 economic downturns were preceeded by spikes in gas prices.

To the extent Bush’s war caused a spike in gas prices, it is the driving factor in this economic downturn.

  25. techsong Says:

So Bush’s tiny brain speaks again and equates the whole mess to “too many houses” Well thats about the best we can get from the pea brain president No surprises there. And war is good for the economy only in sectors that support military hardware and support. What about the rest and majority of the economy. So war is good in Bush’s pea brain again. Once again the best we can expect from brainless Bush. He see’s the world as he wants to see it, not as it actually appears. So interviews with him are pretty worthless and almost comical.

  26. tombaker Says:

He’s right — his crackheaded defense budget bears no relationship to our economic reality whatsoever, which is why we’re borrowing our 12 billion a week from the Communist Party of China.

Maybe I should just tell my wife that even though we’re only making x per month, I’m going to go ahead and spend 3x per month (on private landscapers and a fancy new sports car), because I am at “war” with “extremists” (annoying neighbors) who want to “destroy” (leave their lawn un-mowed, and fail to take their garbage cans in promptly) our neighborhood. When she tries to stop me, I’ll just tell her that my warmaking has nothing to do with “our economy”, that the problem is really just those new kitchen towels she had to have. Then I’ll remind her that her attempt to intervene in my spending “sends a message” to those neighbors that we want them to put their garbage in our yard.

Good thing my wife’s not the kind of hapless sucker R voters obviously are.

Good thing most people don’t run their families the same way R’s run our governement and big businesses.

  30. tarazan Says:

War has no economic return because the money is spent on items that might be blown out…like bombs, bullets, rockets, gasoline etc. etc.,and needed replacement after depleted.

If Bush spent the same money on research, ports, bridges…hospitals & medicine there will be a long term benefit to every American, and the American industry too.,and that will help in increasing revenues of government and states, which will benefit the society as a whole.

We have billions yet to spend also on returned injured soldiers who came back with permenant injuries at a younger age.

The cost of wars is financed by Treasury Papers, which taxpayers pay interest on this borrowed money.
So when Bush thinks that hundreds of billions of dollars of war spending has nothing to do with our economic situation , he is mistaken.

This money spent on wars could be used to help every American in many ways.

It also doesn’t help that the stated ‘items’ cause destruction of property and lives , that costs even more ……………On both a humane and economic level.

  36. Evil Spaniard Says:

In fact, a good chunk of the taxes used to pay the war are given to Halliburton and the likes, who in turn use it to pay their workers (truckers, cooks, etc), who are usually contracted outside the USA (they are cheaper), and the golden parachute of their board of directors and biggest shareholders, who don’t necessarily are from the USA or reinvest the money in the USA. Oh, and let’s don’t forget, they use also the money to move to Dubai, to pay less taxes in USA.

A great deal, I say you!

  45. Jackie Says:

Yes Bush just might be right this time. He is only given Iraq 1 Trillion dollars and that is nothing compaired to what the Contractors have been given. Even convicted Wilkes got 43 billion and Froggo got much more as a White House friend. Contractors are paid Billions of dollars to build 7 US Embassies in Iraq, after 5 years and slave labor kidnapped for the US job. Nothing to show for the money given and the Embassies aren’t worth a dime and need to start all over again. Now Saddam’s Palace is fine as our troops live there with a swimming pool and lake to fish. We have given over 150 Billion as we price for the innocent men/woman/child we killed. We’re spending Billions for secret operations to spy on other countries, pay offs for this small countries going along with the illegal invasion of Iraq, Billions for classes in Africa to teach adults and young Africans not to have sex per Religion rules, we paid the Media to print only what the President’s lies, propaganda money is put in the budget and of course miscellaneous expenses.

Bush has just signed a stimulus bill for rebate checks to Americans, as the US Treasury is borrowing the money from future income. Sounds alot like what Enron did doesn’t it, well it is. It worked with Enron and it will work again. Even McCain used George H. W. Bush’s old line ” I will not raise taxes”. Now where will the US get the money? When Americans see what has really happen with the stolen US taxpayers money we will know we were played for fools and yes Republicans are laughing their butts off as they resign and leave with the money and put it in off shore accounts. If McCain gets in he’ll take the little that’s left, if Obama gets in he doesn’t know what to do so the Senior Democrats like Kerry/Kennedy will get what they can before the bank is empty. I guess this explains why the United States ranked so low in education, now even common sense is lost.

Even the republicans realize this guy is a former coke head alcoholic that got elected by very very favorable press coverage and a bunch of lies. Remember the line: “I’m a uniter not a divider”. Well his first act as President was to have Rove and Cheney start dividing us along idealogical and party lines. They used the divide and concur strategy to prefection, then they used fear it’s self to get reelected. He still uses the fear card to get the weak democrats to cave in to this day.

  58. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

    “Bush is correct.”

About what? Even conservative business publications like Forbes, The Economist and the Bloomberg Financial news say that Bush’s fiscal and budgetary policies have set us up for a major recession or possibly a depression. The housing issue has very little to do with “too many houses” and very much to do with the lack of liquidity in the market (worst since the late ’20s”) and the value of the dollar (worst ever). The trade deficit is worst in history, the budget deficit and debt as highest in history, job performance is at almost historic lows and the market is barely 1000 points higher than it was 8 years ago. Muckdog, what the hell are you even talking about?

  59. Bobwurst Says:

The economic situation we’re in is too much real estate greed by individuals and mortgage companies. And home builders who have created too much supply.
    Mcukdog

It’s a little more complicated than that, “my friend”. While greed does have something to do with the problem, we’ve been living in a national ponzi scheme for the last several years: people were finacing a lifestyle they couldn’t afford by sucking the equity out of their homes, which created the illusion of wealth which was coupled with bad lending practices that inflated the demand for homes, which drove prices up beyond what the homes were worth, which gave the first people room to take out more equity that didnt’ exist…and so on until the whole thing started collapsing. And here we are.

  60. lzcrmc Says:

muckdog beat me to it. This was a an extremely sloppy post by ThinkProgress. While you can certainly argue that, over time, spending on war deflects spending from more productive uses or the incredible amount of borrowing to fund this war theoretically should increase the cost of capital for all borrowers, deficit spending does tend to stimulate the economy. And this war has been funded through massive deficit spending.

Do I think Bush understands any of that? Probably not. Do I think any aspect of this war is good. Absolutely not.

If you are going to ridicule Bush about something, there is ample ammunition. But, at the very least, you need to present evidence that what he said is, indeed, factually incorrect. This blog presented exactly nothing.

Looks like there is a reason the top students don’t go to Big Blue for their economics degrees. But they usually have a good football team.

I’d say about May of next year, before the next congress starts letting repair contracts for fiscal ‘10.

The surge is working, the war isn’t. We can’t leave all those troops there forever as guard dogs keeping the peace. It’s a “band-aid” fix to a much bigger problem. It is not a solution at all. It’s Bush just stalling and leaving his mess for the next president. A failed war cancels out any temporary surge.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Nixon

As a result of the Watergate scandal, Nixon resigned the presidency in the face of likely impeachment by the United States House of Representatives and conviction by the Senate. His successor, Gerald Ford, issued a controversial pardon for any federal crimes Nixon may have committed.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Nixon#Watergate

In light of his loss of political support and the near certainty of both his impeachment by the House of Representatives and his probable conviction by the Senate, he resigned on August 9, 1974, after addressing the nation on television the previous evening. listen (help·info) He never admitted to criminal wrongdoing, although he later conceded errors of judgment.

On September 8, 1974, a blanket pardon from President Ford, who served as Nixon’s second Vice President, ended any possibility of indictment.

    http://www.google.com/ search?client=safari&rls=en&q=nixon+%2B+impeachment&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

On Friday, August 9, Nixon resigned the presidency and avoided the likely prospect of losing the impeachment vote in the full House and a subsequent trial in the Senate. He thus became the only U.S. President ever to resign. Vice President Gerald R. Ford succeeded him and a month later granted Nixon a full pardon for any crimes he might have committed while President.

The Chimp is attempting to coast by with lies, lies, and more lies. The people at this point are scratching their heads, checking their bank accounts, and saying “Wha?”. People are having to choose between medications and food; school budgets are being slashed; the housing industry in many states is at a total standstill and local governments are tanking. And this ignoramus is still spinning how great our economy is. He’s an even bigger fool than anyone ever imagined.

Well then, I guess we’ll just have to keep bringing it up from time to time, huh?

bush knows nothing about economics. He’s proven that many times over.

    What an idiot!

  136. whatevah Says:

MapleStreet: Jeb Bush of the Bush crime family be damned. If that man ever thinks that he will hold public office again, he’s got another thought coming. When the total truth is permitted to be aired about how the election of 2000 was stolen by Jeb and Katherine Harris, they’ll both be behind bars.

It’s no wonder the rest of the world is making a total assclown of the Chimp as he travels around. Heard that today in Africa, they were chanting “Obama” - in total rejection of this criminal.

Really? That is sooo cool. bushie hasn’t been liked world wide for some time but for the world to start rallying behind a “potential” president is a good sign for Obama.

  139. mary Says:

No matter what you may think of Obama, it’s hard to argue against the assertion that he would go a long way in making the world think that this country has regained some of its sanity.

Ya see, 7 billion dollars a year on children’s health care would crash the economy, but 10 billion a month in Iraq creates jobs, heh, heh. The problem is healthy kids. I know there are nay sayers out there who will try to tell you that healthy kids are good for the country, but see, these are liberals, democrats, who are working for the terrorists by trying to RAISE YOUR TAXES! The administration doesn’t even count the money we spend in Iraq in the budget, so there is no need to raise taxes and we need to make the tax breaks on the wealthy permanent. That way we have a robust economy and can afford to be shooting Iraqi’s like fish in a barrel. Ya see, killing “el kyda” (in Iraq) is good for the economy (not so good in Afghanistan), healthy kids are bad for the economy and only helps the “terrerists”, heh heh. This’ not tough stuff really, its all “commonsensical”.

Outside the 28% in this country who would apparently follow this idjit right on thru the Gates of Hell, I think it’s safe to say the rest of the world just wants him GONE, period.

Bush is an arrogant obnoxious liar. When will the mainstream media FINALLY challenge calculated lies from Bush, like his statement today that his Iraq War has nothing to do with the devastation of the US economy?

He continues to get a pass, while the media defer to this moron like he is some kind of royalty outside the law. Speak up. This is a democracy. We demand the truth. Ask hard follow-up questions.

Bush is an arrogant obnoxious liar. When will the mainstream media FINALLY challenge calculated lies from Bush…

They won’t. The media is corporate owned and BushCo is their puppet. Why would they challenge their own man who talks and acts in their interest?

He continues to get a pass…

By this you infer that the media does not understand. The media is not an independent and free reporting media any more. Reporters and the pundits they employ say and do what they are told. Their “issuing Bush a pass” is done on purpose with malice a fore thought!
