Glenn Beck: ‘Nancy Pelosi Will End Up Killing Americans’

On his CNN Headline News show last night, conservative talking head Glenn Beck fumed about the House leadership’s decision to let the Protect America Act (PAA) expire this weekend. This was “an extension requested by the president,” exclaimed Beck.

Beck then jumped on President Bush’s fearmongering bandwagon, claiming that the House leadership — specifically Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) — would be responsible for the death of Americans:

BECK: He feels — and I happen to agree with him — that this congressional game-playing by Nancy Pelosi will end up killing Americans.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/02/BeckPelosiKillAmericans.320.240.flv]

Like Bush, Beck is overhyping the consequences of the law’s expiration.

In fact, not only will surveillance begun under the law be able to continue, but intelligence officials can initiate new surveillance against suspected terrorists by simply getting a warrant through the FISA court. The warrants can even be obtained after the surveillance has begun.

Intelligence experts, like the Cato Institute’s Timothy Lee, believe the expiration of the Protect America Act doesn’t deserve the vapors the right wing is getting over it:

There’s no reason to think our nation will be in any more danger in 2008 than it was in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, or 2006,” [said Lee].

Ben Wittes of the Brookings Institution said because existing warrantless surveillance begun under the temporary laws could continue for up to a year, the “sky is not falling at all.”

If Beck really thinks the expiration of the PAA will cause Americans to die, he should bring it up with the president and his allies in Congress who blocked another temporary extension of the law.

Digg It!

Transcript:

Now, after 9/11, you remember we came up with all kinds of new — aggressive, new laws to combat a new kind of enemy. One of them was the Patriot Act. Another one was the Protection — Protest America Act. This was an extension of our eavesdropping. It helped our government listen in and find terrorists.

Well, over the weekend, the House failed to pass this Bill, which would have prevented the Protect America Act from lapsing, an extension requested by the president. It`s got a six-month sunset over and over again. He feels — and I happen to agree with him — that this congressional game-playing by Nancy Pelosi will end up killing Americans.

Now, what could be even more terrifying than that fact is that congress may be acting with reelection in mind and not your safety. Critics are saying now that the House caved to special interest groups, mostly trial lawyers who want their rights to sue these big, huge phone companies that release sensitive information to the government.

Why is this man given a public microphone? He is the real danger to Americans.

  2. toasterhead says:

Nice to see the conservatives found a use for their old “trial lawyer” talking point. It must have been gathering dust by now.

  3. RUCerious says:

The FISA law enacted last August was for one year duration.
The only thing expiring is the telecom immunity.
That’s not going to kill anything. Except the telcos who broke the law upon request of BushitCo.

  4. DanCaveman says:

How many Americans has G.W. Bush killed? How many times has Glenn admonished him?

The deaths due to Bush are not hypothetical, they are real, and they continue every single day!

  5. Fritz says:

These right-wing morons are making messes in their underwear hoping for a terrorist attack since the PAA expired. These traitorous yellow cowards want Americans to be killed to prove their twisted point.
It’s just too bad that President Drunky McChimp actually caused PAA to expire…

Don’t you just love these fear-mongering repubs? That’s all they have is fear.
What a bunch of idiots and beck is one of the worst.

…but…but…but…I thought it was Hillary Clinton who was killing Americans! Or was it Barack Obama who was killing Americans? Oh wait — it’s Americans voting for Democrats who are killing Americans!

There’s no more water in this well. Give it up.

  8. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

How many times have conservative posters come into these discussions and accused liberals of “wanting the economy to fail” or “wanting to fail in Iraq” when we criticized policies?

Wouldn’t you also argue that Glen Beck WANTS there to be a terrorist attack to prove he’s right? Isn’t Glen Beck just ASKING for a terrorist attack?

  9. ralph the wonder llama says:

It hardly needs pointing out, but Beck is a fu(king idiot when he says This was “an extension requested by the president,” exclaimed Beck”:

    http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=109131

US President George W. Bush on Wednesday vowed to veto another temporary extension of a domestic spying law and pressed Congress for a long-term fix to shield phone companies that cooperated with his warrantless eavesdropping program.

“The time for debate is over,” Bush told reporters in the Oval Office. “I will not accept any temporary extension.”

I’m not the first to point out this particular truism, but it comes down to this:

Bush says that Americans will die if PAA is allowed to expire.

Bush will not sign a renewal of PAA if telecom companies aren’t granted immunity from past law-breaking.

Ergo, Bush puts the interests of telecom companies above those of keeping Americans secure.

    Comment by Fritz — February 19, 2008 @ 12:57 pm

And you know darn well that the very people who are now praising Bush to the skies because “he has kept us safe” will immediately point accusing fingers at Democrats if we are subjected to another Al-Qaida type attack, no matter how small.

I assume then, in the minds of the fearmongers, that the ONLY reason Bush has “kept us safe” is because his government hasn’t been required to get a warrant to listen in on phone conversations? Gee, and all this time I thought the reason he has “kept us safe” is because “we’re fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here”!

  17. RUCerious says:

    gay vegetarian pacifists

on behalf of said group, it takes lots of courage in today’s society to be any of those three groups.

I’d say about 98% of gay vegetarian pacifists are more courageous than amoral coward intentional moron Glennnn Becky.

  19. RUCerious says:

er, “a member of any of those three groups’, if you will…

  20. hellinabucket says:

Beck’s logic is wrong. His alarmist fearmongering has corkscrewed him into the ground (once again). During an election year, the driving forces in the house and senate are to appease the masses and not to push any bill that would incite one group or another so much that they could be voted out.

  21. Kay says:

Darth Cheney and his PNAC crowd already did that on that sunny, Tuesday September morning 6.5 years ago.

  25. krazeeinjun says:

Ummm Glenn — decisions made by some U.S. politicians have already caused the unnecessary deaths of countless Americans. The politicians I refer to are George Bush and Dick Cheney and the unnecessary American deaths they are responsible for are the ones related to their abject incompetence and hubris which allowed 9/11 to happen on their watch followed by their equally disastrous and corrupt decision to invade and occupy Iraq. Their decision to wage war in Iraq was based on manufactured intelligence and lies to the American people and the world — they also used fear-mongering (imminent mushroom clouds over American cities) to cow the American public into supporting their corrupt agenda. Add to that the tens of thousands of Iraqi civilian deaths directly related to this amoral war (mostly post-invasion) and what you have are actions that in a sane world would be considered war crimes. So Glenn Beck, you can take your pissy-pants, wild-eyed fear mongering and shove it as far up your sphincter as it will go.

    Just saying . . .

  27. DRxJ says:

BLECH: He feels — and I happen to agree with him — that this congressional game-playing by Nancy Pelosi will end up killing Americans.

    2 Questions:
    1) Whose watch was it during 9/11?
    2) Who prematurely jumped the gun to invade Iraq, thus securing the deaths of thousands of our brave men and women?

    ’nuff said!

  28. bs says:

o’ shoooooot, this actually makes me laugh and say wtf? i guess bush has been nothing but bringing good will to all. this is so over the top it’s the stutterin stupidity of the american folks. but what makes it scary is that these are the folks that are ruling the world.

  29. EmilyD says:

The reason radical righties are up in arms about this bad, temporary law expiring is that they can no longer spy on you, me, and any Democratic candidates. In a fair and square contest we kick their collective asses so as usual, they resort to their regular MO, CHEATING!

  32. JMOHR says:

Where are our trolls? Where do we hear the usual drum beat that we need a fascist government to remain safe?

How do these idiots keep supporting this administration that has still failed to bring AQ to its knees, faces a worsening condition in Afghanistan and a war in Iraq that has lasted longer than WWII without a real definitive success? I am tired of hearing that insurgencies take a long time to put down. There was never a reason for the insurgency to have started had the Republicans shown the slightest bit of common sense in their planning for the war and the occupation. But noooooo – these idiots know everything. There was no reason to calm the civil unrest that arose weeks after the fall of Saddam. Nooo- there was no reason to maintain the Iraqi military. Oh Nooooooooooooo – there was no reason to maintain control over all those weapon dumps.

Would not any reasonable person start to wonder why all of these dire measures are needed now? Would not any reasonable person question the quality of the president and his political party that believes that we will always have to live in fear of our lives? What mother Fu ing incompetents.

How do you explain that Bush instituted warrantless wiretapping with the aid of the telecoms MONTHS BEFORE 9/11, yet failed to stop 9/11? If you really think that this is meant to combat terrorism, you obviously need to stop swallowing everything you hear from this criminal administration…and the fact is you just repeated Glenn Beck’s the GOP talking point. 37. 2MillionLightYearsToAndromeda says:

Congress Briefed on Waterboarding in 2002

In September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA’s overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said.[..]

*** Pelosi has refused to impeach because she is an accessory to the war crime of water torture. Lets not let this story fall into the trash bin of history. Vote for Cindy Sheehan for Congress!

Congressional game-playing? I think that works on both sides. Let’s look at the scoreboard:

    Nancy Pelosi and Congress –
Failed to extend the PAA because one of the contingencies was to grant immunity to telecoms who acted illegally.

    Bushney –
Demanded immunity for telecoms who acted illegally — not to protect the telecoms, but to protect the Bushney a$$. Blocked a temporary extension of PAA in order to force a vote on the extension (which obviously backfired).

it’s called follow the law and the law says to telecommunications that there has to be a WARRANT in order to tap anyones phone. these pricks are not obove the law and therefore they should be prosecuted for doing so and knowing it was against the law. the mere fact that there is a piece of paper called ‘the military commissions act’ and ‘patriot act’ and striping habeas corpus and our constitutional rights…….which allows bush to deem anyone(american or other) as a terrorist and strip all of their rights. and also allows martial law to be placed on the american people. katrina ring a bell???? see it all binds together and thats why the american folks need to revolt. what we stand for the nazi in the white house demolished it in the name of OIL,NWO, PNAC, BILDABERG, HALLIBURTON, CARLYLE……i call bullcrap

  50. whatevah says:

GlennBeck needs to rephrase his statement. George Bush is responsible for killing 4,000 americans and 600,000 innocent iraqis. That’s fact/ not conjecture/not fiction. Stick to the facts, Glenn or you’ll soon become irrelevant to the american landscape.

  51. Shayne says:

What does Bush need intelligence on terrorists for anyway. He had plenty of warnings that 9/11 was imminent and ignored it. In addition he was already doing this wiretapping before then and obviously didn’t pay any attention to terror alerts but only to the actions of his political enemies which he is obviously still using.

  52. ucsbclassics53 says:

So this is just another one of your ignorant distortions. The administration’s wiretapping without warrants had nothing to do with the subsequent “war on terra” and everything to do with their rush toward authoritarianism.

And there you have it folks, fascism has arrived, and just as Sinclair Lewis said: Carrying a cross and draped in a flag.

I mean really, the right is whining about protecting Americans, but the bill won’t go forward because it doesn’t grant telecom immunity. Corporations over citizens people.

    9. Power of corporations protected

Although the personal life of ordinary citizens was under strict control, the ability of large corporations to operate in relative freedom was not compromised. The ruling elite saw the corporate structure as a way to not only ensure military production (in developed states), but also as an additional means of social control. Members of the economic elite were often pampered by the political elite to ensure a continued mutuality of interests, especially in the repression of “have-not” citizens.

  78. whatevah says:

Gido: The only thing left to the rapidly-imploding GOP is the presence of total fakes at this point. So, what percentage of that 26-28% base is fragmenting away from McTorture? this is not a military issue……it’s called fbi. do we drop bombs on murderers here in the U.S? no…..police work that is how it is done. secondly what does clinton have to do with anything….clinton didn’t want him either….he was told by the ones who run this country. try and mess up saudi and then see what happens here in america….you think recession is bad it will be a depression like the 1920’s. and what happened in tora bora….bush had him and then said u.s. troops back off and let the afghans get him…..he escaped. don’t for one second think that wasn’t planned. why would bush go after the very folks that he is in the oil business with? why isn’t bush bombing saudi arabia since 15 of 19 of the so-called hijackers were saudi……the oil business that is why. and the only reason why he wanted saddam was because saddam put a hit on papa bush…..it’s called revenge. come on now this is not rocket science. FOLLOW THE MONEY AND THE PLAYERS BEHIND IT.

The government can request a warrant to spy on us through the FISA court. The government can have the telephone companies spy on us for 72 hours before they need to get a court order. The problem is that they won’t get the court order to have a blanket spying operation like they have now. And this is a blanket spying operation that started before 911 even happened.

It is sadly lacking in critical thinking skills. It is the Borg, unable to think for itself, tied to it’s mother/father authority figures.

Why do you think that no defacto warrants were approved? Why do you think Bush never applied for a single defacto warrant? Why did Bush opt to not even attempt to get a pre-tap warrant? Because he knew he’d never be approved for warrantless wiretapping of politican enemies, that’s why.

But something you fail to recognize: the recount WAS legal!

Either or both candidates could have legally asked for a recount, but then-Gov. Bush put up sp many legal hurdles that the recount (under proper legal pervue) was unable to be held. ThenGov. Bush demanded concessions (special eye-witnesses, different rules than the law allowed for counting votes, legal blockades) that eventually led to the state being declared for him.

The follow-up comission report showed that out of the 9 possible recount scenarios, the 3 that VPres. Gore wanted would have called the state for Bush. The other 6 scenarios (Bush rules) would have gone for Gore.

Fact, SM: After 9/11 there was a clear military goal to bring OBL to justice, to destroy Al Qaeda and the Taliban and to bring some semblance of economic, social and political stability to Afghanistan. Thanks to the other agendas of King George the Foolish, none of these have been achieved and the Taliban is once again on the offensive. Comment by Wayne — February 19, 2008 @ 2:56 pm

I know Wayne but Tracy has trouble reading more than one sentence at a time. We can only give him info in tiny bits and pieces.

Eh, Glen Becky doesn’t *have* a package. He stuffs his pants with a salami.

    Oh that poor salami.

    none on American soil.

    Comment by Lefty Patriot — February 19, 2008 @ 4:01 pm

Well, the first WTC bombing was on American soil. And the two embassy attacks were technically on American soil. And the assassination of terrorist leader Meir Kahane – recognized as the first al-Qa’ida operation, was on American soil during the first Bush Administration.

  242. tombaker says:

the bush v gore decision has been determined illegitimate by many serious legal scholars. it was a one-off decision, replete with ass-covering language that said it only applied to that one instance, and none of the justices, not even the openly corrupt ones, would sign their name to it, so ashamed were they of it.

  243. Nat says:

“The United States Supreme Court voted 7–2 to end the recount on the grounds that differing standards in different counties constituted an equal protection violation”
    Comment by Tracy2 — February 19, 2008 @ 4:23 pm

Yeah, the Supreme Court handed Gore’s presidency to Bush. That’s what we’ve been saying for years now.

  244. Nat says:

So it’s that Republicans that didn’t allow Democratically run counties to update their voting machines. Yeah, whatever! Excuses and nothing but in order to cover for voter stupidity and election official incompetence.
    Comment by Tracy2 — February 19, 2008 @ 4:27 pm

Forget about what the Counties did or didn’t do. The Supreme Court stepped into what was a state matter and handed Gore’s presidency to Bush.

Just to be safe, we will have to provide free cab rides home, but not to worry, St. Augustine is a small town!

  247. tombaker says:

FL was going to go to Gore, and that was not “the plan” so the scotus was called in to subvert democracy, and they did. that’s what they were put on the bench for – to serve as operatives for the republican party, which they are. still.

  248. Nat says:

“The Equal Protection Clause is a Federal Constitutional matter.”

The Equal Protection Clause didn’t come into play because Florida had different means of voting throughout the state at that time. This was a state matter and the Supreme Court had no business interfering.

Where Gore blew it was when rather than seeking a recount of all the votes, he only sought a recount in select counties where he thought he might pick up votes.
    Comment by good_golly — February 19, 2008 @ 4:38 pm

The Florida Supreme Court ordered a statewide recount.

Ummm , the election official incompetence occurred because Florida had election officials that were all Republicans ; so yeah , the incompetence was there………And quite predictable.

such ignorant, uncostitutional bullshit. the right has no respect for the rule of law, and the right should be destroyed; they are completely antiAmerican, the real terrorist enemies of the USA.

exactly. roberts and alito should be impeached, prosecuted and executed.

  253. belac says:

While his legal accumen leaves much to be desired, I am happy to see that Tracy2 now admits that Gore would have won Florida if all the votes had been counted.
As to his posting this admission in this thread, I wonder if this isn’t a furhter admission that the PAA would have been not only unasked for by a Gore Admin. but also unneeded, as Gore already had experience and skill in using the EXISTING FISA laws to hunt OBL and had no need or desire to tap everyone’s phone and email traffic to do so.

  254. belac says:

    *acumen is more ACCurate

    Comment by Tracy2 — February 19, 2008 @ 6:34 pm

If the didn’t get immunity for the cooperation that they provided just after 9/11, the Senate just past this provision BTW, there is no way in hell that they would provide further assistance, FISA court order or not.

    Comment by Tracy2 — February 19, 2008 @ 5:45 pm

To return to the topic at hand:
please cite an example of a legal wiretap that would be unattianble under existing FISA statutes.

and the issue is not just retroactive immunity for their actions immeadietly following 9/11- the wiretapping began prior to 9/11, they broke the law and they would like to be forgiven without having to admit they did… of course, if they had recieved a FISA court order they wouldn’t need immunity- they would have been compelled to submit to the Government’s requests- just like they will be REQUIRED to submit to future requests under FISA…

I’ve got to say, this misdirection is getting a little transparent…

    Comment by Tracy2 — February 19, 2008 @ 6:53 pm

again- read Richard Clarke’s book “Against all Enemies” and then decide whether Clinton “failed” to stop 9/11
Richard Clarke seems to think that not only did Clinton prevent many 9/11’s he also would have been much more effective and pragmatic in responding to it… since he was the Chief of Counter- Terrorism I tend to think that his opinion carries more weight than yours.
BONUS RIGHT WING NUTJOB POLITICAL POINTS**** he was appointed by the blessed Saint Ronnie!

  258. belac says:

ooh, are you gonna get to me soon tracy?
    I think we’re alone now… there doesn’t seem to be anyone around…

  259. belac says:

To say that Gore really won the popular vote is something we will never know.

    Comment by Tracy2 — February 19, 2008 @ 7:14 pm

Actually, we do KNOW that… he won the popular vote by over half a million. AND according to the rules for the FL re-count that Bush requested himself- Gore won…
But this thread is about the fearmongering on the right regarding PAA and you have yet to address that issue…

  260. belac says:

    Tracy?
I hope you’re buying “Against all Enemies” on Amazon… you are really gonna enjoy it!

  261. belac says:

    Comment by Tracy2 — February 19, 2008 @ 7:28 pm

Different totals rarely lead to different results in elections and there are always voting irregularities- they are the noise in the system. When the result is close, that noise can effect the outcome and the vote count deserves special attention- but it is not always warranted. It WAS warranted in FL in 2000 as the electoral college vote count hinged on the outcome- when using the vote count methods that Bush requested (complete recount) Gore won…

SINCE WHEN IS WARRANTLESS CONSTITUTIONALLY LEGAL?

If WARRANTLESS is to be considered legal, then why the need for amnesty from prosecution?

If doing the Patriotic thing means handing over your protection from a form of government that is compelled to invade one’s privacy, then how did the Founders get the Fourth Amendment wrong?

    .

Yet blowhards like Beck are allowed to spew their ANTI-AMERICAN stance with such bravado and pompousness while claiming to be for America… AMAZING!!!

Would not any reasonable person question the quality of the asus m68n battery, asus m6000 battery president and his political party that believes that we will always have to live in fear of our lives? What mother Fu ing incompetents.
