Bob Corker Refuses To Say That McCain Is ‘Temperamentally Suited To Be President’

Last night on Hannity & Colmes, Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) coyly suggested that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) does not have the temperament to be president. When asked by Alan Colmes whether McCain is “temperamentally suited to be President of the United States,” Corker refused to say yes.

“You know, his temperamental issues have been written about,” Corker said. Sometimes, McCain “says some things that I’m sure he doesn’t mean, walks away, and goes, why did I say that!” Colmes remarked, “I noticed that when I asked you if he was temperamentally suited, you didn’t automatically say yes.” Corker avoided the issue by saying, “Well I think he is an American hero.”

Corker acknowledged in the interview that he’s “had his moments” with McCain. Watch it:

McCain’s temperamental issues have most often been raised in dealings with his own Republican colleagues.

Earlier this year, Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) said that the thought of McCain as president “sends a cold chill down my spine. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.” McCain once called Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) “a f—ing jerk” during a debate over the fate of Vietnam MIAs. And in a heated dispute over immigration, McCain screamed, “F— you!” at Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who had been raising concerns about the legislation.

  3. thirdparty Says:

I think it's funny that somehow this is an issue for a guy who is one of the best "uniters" in Congress, considering McCain-Feingold, for one.

  4. FearandSmear Says:

I'm far less concerned about his dropping the F-Bomb than I am about the OTHER kind of bombs he seems so enamored of...

Sad, really. I used to really hold McCain in high regard as one of the "good" ones.

    Feh...

  5. tom Says:

Isn't it interesting that the republics can't seem to come up with a mentally healthy and stable candidate?

GDumbya and Darth Cheney have been loose cannons for seven years. Now, the republics are poised to anoint another certifiable loony. I guess it's the best that they can do given the limitations of their gene pool.

  6. katy Says:

i was watching the weird-blue-eyed cindy mccain, while she was on stage, behind mcCREEPY, watching the gathered peoples...

she really, really wants to be "first lady"...

    sorry cindy...

  7. gummitch Says:

That's a pretty simple question, really. "Do you think McCain is temperamentally suited to be president?" and this guy, from his own party, will not answer the question. "He's a hero and conservatives will rally around . . . " no, no, that's not the question.

The question is: "Is this man stable enough to trust him near the button?" And the answer is either yes or no and Corker is clearly saying NO.

Perhaps President Pervez Musharraf will be a good president for the US WHEN HE RUNS THERE SOON

  9. cotterperson Says:

McCain wants to be the first PTSD president?

  10. Dumb_Fox Says:

    For goodness sake.

Firstly, none of these shmucks have had anything to say about Cheney's short temper. Secondly, who gives a shit if McCain has in the past cursed other Senators? Some of them probably deserved it.

Fear and Smear is correct, if these people are more offended by the f-bomb than a real bomb, then the problem is with their moral compass, not McCain's choice of language.

  11. RUCerious Says:

Wouldn't ya just love to see Obama or Clinton press his button during a national debate? Have him completely lose it on stage? I would.

  12. whatevah Says:

McCrazy as presidunce should send chills down everyone's effin spine.

  13. Fritz Says:

ALL o f the republiscum are unsuited to be President - even the current republiscum President. They are either emotionally challenged (McCain) or retarded (Bush).

  14. Dr. Matt Says:

I love watching reich-wingers eat their own.

  15. whatevah Says:

#11 That debate and button pushing would be priceless. McCrazy's always sitting on the razor's edge of outburst any moment of the day. When he's smiling and calling people "my friends", it shows that razor's edge to all. He's smiling on the outside and seething on the inside like a churning cauldron about to bubble over.

  16. RUCerious Says:

#15 ~ I'm sure there's some catch phrase (in Vietnamese, maybe?) that would set him off like fourth of july fireworks...

  17. missmolly Says:

I'm waiting to see what icon Garry Trudeau will use to illustrate McCain in his comic strip. Too bad the bomb was already taken by Gingrich.

  18. Shayne Says:

Thanks Corker for giving Dems something else to use in the general election. And we were waiting to start using the Keating 5 scandal and Cindy McCains drug addiction and stealing of them from her own nonprofit until after the primaries but if you guys want to get a jump start on things who are we to complain.

Didn't McCain plagarize that 1000 year idea from some German guy in the 30's?

  22. Guido OBGYN Lover Says:

    hmmm

there's a whole list of people I can't stand who can't stand mccain.

But the whole Reno fathering Chelsea bit is really off the charts. That's something you only hear in a titty bar. And the bomb bomb bomb iran is really far out.

  23. Krazny Says:

Sadly McCain is probably more stable then the current resident in the White House. At least McCain has an attention span longer then three seconds.

  24. Arn Gunnutes Says:

    He's a senile, right-wing wacko NUTJOB.

    Yearrrrrgghhhhhhhhhh! (a la Howard Dean).

Who sold out his "principles" to TRAITORS like Bush.

"You're either WITH McCain and Bush OR
You're with the USA and the TRUTH!"

  25. ForTruth Says:

Just don't let McCain deal with anything that has to do with war, and he'll be fine.

  26. kist93 Says:

McCain's temperament really doesn't matter. He is never going to be elected.

  29. hellinabucket Says:

I'm guessing the F bomb isn't the only bomb he's willing to drop.

  30. RUCerious Says:

    McCain's not fit

    emotionally,

    mentally,

    physically

    to be president.

He has a very limited grasp of

    economics,

    foreign policy and diplomacy,

    constitutional law and

    common decency.

    Yikes!!

Howard Dean's campaign got derailed by a positive "scream" (raising his voice because of the noise in the room). How does this compare with McCain's screaming at colleagues? Uniter? Only in the Bush manner of "we'll be united if you agree with me".

    Pah!

Howard Dean's campaign got derailed because the corporatocracy realized that he was gaining popularity and might actually win.

I think we are in agreement here. I just didn't answer the (rather rhetorical) question I raised, as you did.

The Republicans have been shouting "character matters" for years. We need to point out McCain's character flaws, suggested by his short fused temper.

  37. RUCerious Says:

katy, I heard that yesterday, can't remember where, but makes perfect sense. McCain, after his heart attack at the Inaugural brawl, leaves yet another shrub in charge.

  38. katy Says:

    Comment by RUCerious — February 19, 2008 @ 12:28 pm

And I'm sure Pappy Bush, with all his sinister CIA history, knows just how to induce a heart attack and who would be best to get it done. And this would give Bushco all the motivation it needs to steal another election.

  41. Erroll Says:

Unfortunately, Alan Colmes did not bother to challenge Corker's assertion that McCain is an "American hero", unless Corker is implying that it is somehow heroic for McCain to have bombed Vietnamese civilians when McCain was a pilot during the Vietnam conflict. Is Corker not somehow aware that bombing civilians during war time is strictly forbidden under the Geneva Conventions? Or perhaps it is Corker's belief that international law and treaties do not somehow apply to members of the United States military. American Exceptionalism at its finest [or worst].

  42. Marie Says:

Yessiree, McCain is just the guy with his finger on the "hot" button.
We already have a chimpanzee playing with it, and the repugs want the guy with a hot temper in control.

For comparison, take a look at Obama and how cool he is under pressure.

  43. toasterhead Says:

    Comment by PatrioticLiberalChristian — February 19, 2008 @ 12:23 pm

True, but then it's only a matter of time before the Republicans begin pointing out Bill Clinton's notoriously quick temper. Personally, I'd rather leave the character game to the Republicans and focus instead on McCain's policy flaws.

    But that's just me.

  44. Frosty Cupcake Says:

Sorry if this has been mentioned already but:

How does being a prisoner of war get you the "American Hero" label 24/7?

Can't the media give that phrase a rest?

Unfortunately, This fact will not get the Vets any more coverage for PTSD issues or the real ills that pain them. He is a two-faced flip-flopping piece of shit. No compassion for him will devoid the truth.

    He remains:
    McNut the Bush admin III

  46. Dave von Ebers Says:

Seems to me, McCain's got the perfect temperament for Vice President, no? I mean, isn't one of the essential qualities of that job the ability to tell people to go "ef" themselves? Well, that and shoot your friends in the face ...

  47. tombaker Says:

k, golly, you and the mice in your pockets can call him that for the rest of your lives, if it makes you feel better - 'cause that's all it's going to do.

you just keep shooting your bb gun at the freight train of history- just don't count on much in the way of results.

  48. nanlichi Says:

Come on GG, time to practice saying President Obama. He will be your President and Commander in Chief in less than one year so you had better get busy little guy.

  49. Leftside Annie Says:

His language is offensive, but the real problem here is his temper. It's been a life-long problem with him. His nicknames in high school were "Punk" and "McNasty." Presidents need to be and should be diplomats to succeed, not bullies.

  52. tombaker Says:

There goes Corker's funding from the RNC. They don't tolerate anyone who won't lie for them.

He must be planning on quitting, like all the other R's with vestiges of decency are.

  53. billyjoejimbob Says:

Corker has not been in office long enough to know! He was here in TN raping us so how could he know him. Corker is a crook!
