McCain’s unethical relationships.

By Amanda Terkel on Feb 20th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

McCain’s unethical relationships.

The New York Times reports on Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) relationship with lobbyist Vicki Iseman during his first run for the GOP nomination in 2000, which often led to political favors:

A champion of deregulation, Mr. McCain wrote letters in 1998 and 1999 to the Federal Communications Commission urging it to uphold marketing agreements allowing a television company to control two stations in the same city, a crucial issue for Glencairn Ltd., one of Ms. Iseman’s clients. [...]

In late 1999, Ms. Iseman asked Mr. McCain’s staff to send a letter to the commission to help Paxson, now Ion Media Networks, on another matter. Mr. Paxson was impatient for F.C.C. approval of a television deal, and Ms. Iseman acknowledged in an e-mail message to The Times that she had sent to Mr. McCain’s staff information for drafting a letter urging a swift decision.

Mr. McCain complied. He sent two letters to the commission, drawing a rare rebuke for interference from its chairman.

The Times reports that McCain denied having an affair with Iseman.

UPDATE: In a statement tonight, the McCain campaign claimed that the Senator has “never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists.”

I agree about the eclipse. I drove up to my lake place in Minnesota and it is totally dark and crystal clear here. I have had a fantastic view of the eclipse which started here about an hour and a half ago. It is total now so the moon is almost blood red. Amazing!

Regarding this McCain story in the NYT — it is going to produce so much hot air from the likes of Limpballs, Little Seanie Insanity, Mark Lavine, et. al. It has started already.

Oh, the outrage. Not against McCain, of course. Against that leftie main-stream media that’s lying about and abusing poor little Johnny.

    This is so much fun!

And after they’re done with this, they can start in on Scary Cindy and her drug addiction, theft of drugs from an NGO that she funded with her daddy’s wealth, etc. It’s just too bad that these stories are coming out so early. Why, Mittens Romney might even be tempted to jump back in the race now that McCain’s horse is going to pull up lame.

The timing seems suspecious for an old story.
McCain can deny it happened..unless someone has a video to show, the game of denial will continue.

Clinton denied first that he had anything to do with Lewinski, until the stained dress went to the lab. and the results compelled Clinton to admit…

But denial does not mean that McCain was able to wash his sins in the eyes of his party’s ultra Conservatives…
McCain reputation is going to be tarnished anyway, and large number of these Conservatives will say….we told you so…

Yep! There is no stopping the snowball from rolling down the hill and growing bigger all the time. And the beauty is, the left did not start this thing, as much as the “wrong” will try to say it did. The Dems don’t have to do a thing here! Like an internet letter that you can’t stop from reaching millions, this one will hurt McBush tremendously. Can you imagine how much time, effort and money the McBush people will have to spend to try and kill this “rumor”?

Not all of us. I’m one year older than McBush and I prefer women close to my age. The young are so inexperienced about life that the only relationship I can conceive of is one of father and daughter. Now aside from a relationship, I really enjoy young people! You will not find Obama running smears. That is the domain of the republics. Or maybe GDumbya and Darth Cheney who are looking for some way to finagle a third term.

  80. BrianFL says:

What did you expect from the only member of the Keating Five still serving in Congress?

McCain ran on the campaign finance reform platform in 1999 because he wanted to turn his biggest weakness into his biggest strength. It’s Rovian politics 101, although Rove likes to turn it around and make the opponents biggest strenghth their biggest weakness (like turning John Kerry’s bravery in Vietnam into him being a coward who faked his injuries and did not deserve his medals….or how they’re now trying to turn Obama’s speaking ability into a weakness by saying he’s all talk).

These guys remind me of old NFL coaches trying to use their same old plays when the league has completely moved in a different direction. McCain is running the option while Obama is using the Patiots and Colts spread-offense.

  83. jb says:

I think McCain has many more serious faults than the occasional humping of blondes with million mile stares. But to some out there, this will be a big deal.

  84. RUCerious says:

Yo Arn, are ya a Houghton kinda guy?

  85. BrianFL says:

    Kgprophet,

I personally do not care about the affair alone. That’s between McCain and his wife. It’s a personal issue, not related to his job.

It’s the lobbyist part that worries me. Accepting sexual favors in exchange for political favors should be just as illegal as accepting monetary bribes in exchange for political favor. I think it’s even lower to sell yourself for sexual favors. For his own staff to have to step in, they must have known political favors were being given.

  86. RUCerious says:

Our poor gigi troll is so pathetic. We don’t have to or need to smear McCain, he does such a great job of stepping in shit it almost smears itself!

Twenty-four percent (24%) now want the troops brought home immediately.
Looking at the other end of the spectrum, 34% want troops to remain in Iraq until the mission is complete. That is down two points from a week ago. The number of Americans who want the troops to remain and finish the mission had ranged from 32% to 39% since tracking began.

This is almost too drastic to believe.
George W. Bush’s overall job approval rating has dropped to a new low in American Research Group polling as 78% of Americans say that the national economy is getting worse according to the latest survey from the American Research Group.
Among all Americans, 19% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 77% disapprove. When it comes to Bush’s handling of the economy, 14% approve and 79% disapprove.

Read it and weep McBush lovers. How do you like your toast? It is going to be well done in November.

so jk the gig grin on johnny’s chubby little chops wont last too long – what are the odds on a pre-november meltdown?

It’s got sex, money, power–perfect for the media.

The story was well known to NYTimes for sometime. McCain and his staff were pressuring the NYtimes not to publish the story, surprisingly the story was published after McCain took the lead in his run for presidency and he is about to get the nomination.
Had this story by NYTimes been published 2 or 3 months ago…McCain would not have made it to the top, as the front runner. People are entitled to know the truth about this, because it is not just about romantic relationship…it is also about doing FAVORS for lobbyists as a result of this romantic relationship.

Joe “dead intern” Scarborough still has not addressed the death of his intern, nor the ME’s report that said a woman who runs marathons “mysteriously” had a heart attack with no prior heart issues in any way, shape, or form. The ME also had a history of unethical behavior, but for some reason, the MSM just didn’t care to cover that story.

McCain is a Myth not a Maverick,

Though difficult with such a highly controlled media, it seems the way to call back tempted independents and democratic crossovers would be to repeatedly expose McCain’s supposed strengths, the most important being the myth of his principled character and willingness to put himself at risk to uphold principles. Both of these are media creations.

McCain hasn’t been a maverick since he almost flunked out of the US Naval Academy squeaking by in the bottom 5 of his large class.

Throughout his life he has shown profound weakness of character. He has a pattern of revealing that he knows what the principled, honorable, or ethical position or path to take is, only to do the opposite as his consistently weak character gives way to corruption, calculation and expediency.

After seeing over 130 shipmates burn to death from napalm and high explosives. He said it opened his eyes to the horrific suffering of napalm and that he didn’t think he could any longer bomb the civilian areas of North Viet Nam. But within 3 weeks a few brave North Vietnamese saved his life of the vengeful crowd that had seen the mass murder of hundreds of thousands from his bombs and others. That flip against what he recognized as right is his life-long pattern.

Last year he allowed amendments to his anti-torture bill which reversed the effect of the legislation so as to allow its use, ban any civil suits for its use and thus any ability to expose it, allow torture coerced statements and confessions in kangaroo trials, provide de facto impunity for using torture including allowing the use of reliance on (bogus criminal) legal opinions allowing it as a defense. He said not one word, allowed it to be portrayed as a successful thankless campaign against torture, and did not expose that the bill had become the torturers dream.

His imaginary positive character traits, like GW’s, are media creations. The difference seems to be that McCain often knows what is right before he betrays the principle.

McCain has flipped on almost every issue of substance in order to cynically pander to the worst elements of the political sphere. (This list includes but is not limited to campaign finance, torture, taxes, domestic surveillance, immigration and much more.) On the 3 trillion dollar disaster in mass murder adventurism however his has not wavered. Escalate any war the U.S. is in and wage as many wars against the weak as possible.

A man of principles to which he adheres regardless of consequence, he is not.
A man of honor, he is not.
A rogue bucking the system he is not.
A phony who with the media cultivates his false image is what he remains.

    JK

You have questioned my grammar, something I do not care about that much when I write..once in a while I do goof, just like eveybody else.
You are acting as ‘Mr. perfect’.
If I have to sit down and write people about their grammar’s errors then I’ll spend half of my day correcting people.
Look what you wrote yourself on #271:

” Your tactics turn around and bite you on the but”…

It should be ‘bite you on the ‘butt’…’

    Comment by tarazan — February 21, 2008 @ 7:00 am

Spot on. It’s yet *another* reason I am so suspicious of the Times. They sat on this story until McCain secured the nomination; McCain, the only Republican candidate with a chance of winning the general election in November.

    Liberal media, my @ss.

  215. tarazan says:

What will people see today on television is McCain denying the whole story…that’s a sample of what people will see if McCain becomes the President.
Press conferences to deny…and never admit any wrongdoing.
    Sounds familiar !!

hey, where’s the Keating 5 stuff, gg? McCain is a thief and a liar, those are facts that you can’t fight. Now he’s aprven adulterer and cheater, what a surprise.

I can’t wait until that black man’s face is all over every government building, right in the faces of the treasonous rightards who will have to suffer the indignity of having their racial superior looking down on them.

#280 – “The Barak H. Obama camp must be truly desperate to be using its surrogates at the NTT and TP to try to smear a war hero.” Comment by good_golly — February 21, 2008 @ 9:07 am

There’s no “try” about it, and the funny part is that it’s Sen. McCain who’s smearing himself with his own mis-deeds of his past!

If only Sen. McCain had gotten the Bush “cover-up” team to go over his past before he tried for the nomination, then there’d be less substance to the facts that follow him about.

Sen. Kerry is a war hero, but your side had no problems with smearing him. Now that Sen. McCan’s past is smearing his own candidacy, why are you complaining about “war hero” status? Got nothing else to spew?

Actually, the white inferiority is highlighted here, as exemplified by your idiotic comment.

  228. Jeremy in Denver says:

Folks, get flagging. There are so many off-topic posts in this thread sent by trolls trying to derail the conversation it’s not funny.

In defense of Tracy2, he/she actually sticks to the material of the thread, and initially starts by attacking the article (not that I agree with him/her on the validity of the attacks, I’m waiting for more info to come out before making my decision). Too bad he/she gives into the urge to personally attack..those posts have been flagged.

All the rest of ‘em? Flag away. Especially ‘John Kerry’.

    Now, obligatory on-topic:

This will at the minimum reinforce the evangelical’s beliefs that McCain is not their candidate. Trolls, you’ve got it so hard. Democrats are turning out at nearly 2 to 1 ratios over your own people and independents are breaking hard to Obama. At his best, your President only enjoy a 30% support rating, which incidently matches your percentages of Republicans in the general populace. Democrats never were your supporters, and now, you’ve lost the Independents. If newer polls are to be believed, he is now less than 20%, which indicates some of your base is fleeing his support as well! Your candidate has already been tarnished by the 2000 primary, and new dirt will keep coming out on him. And the sad thing is that now that this is out, you can’t even count on the Evangelicals again.

I can see why you’re screaming so loud. If this affects the Bible-Thumpers, you’re sunk. They’re your last, best hope for power. Without them, you’re back to your true base, the 10% of society that controls 90% of the wealth. At least you’ll get more money from your benefactors to stir up crap here.

I think this is the first in a long string of screwups that will plague McCain all the way to November. He’s already running up hill against support for an unpopular war and the second recession in 8 years. Throw in his temper, and you may have your very own Dean moment. Statesman? You don’t have one. You’ve not had one since at least Reagan, maybe even further back than that. Obama looks like he might make a good statesman, especially if he lives up to his comparisons to JFK. And America is SICK and TIRED of the Bush years and everything that brings.

As LP said, the most bitter pill for you to swallow come next year will be looking at a black man (or white woman) and having to acknowledge that he’s now President. Better start looking forward to 2012, because methinks 2008 is out of your reach…

I’ll be back. got to get the Lawn Chair, Popcorn, and catnip tea disguised as a martini….this should be FUN to watch. :-D

I have never claimed to be Mr. Perfect. I apologize if you feel that I was being overly critical, but that was not my intent.

Maybe, if we kept our energy to go after the regressives and their indefensible policies and platforms rather than snark other progressives, we’d be better off.

  230. fletc3her says:

This spin on this story is that McCain is SOOO honorable that he doesn’t even perceive that these things might be seen as a conflict of interest. GIVE ME A BREAK? This guy talks, but he never follows up his rhetoric with votes. I can’t tell you how many times I have agreed with his speech from the floor of the Senate only to have him vote against a bill he is arguing in favor us.

Recently, we all got whiplash as he endorsed the practice of waterboarding in a series of Senate votes. McCain is for torture? What? How is that possible? Well, he SAYS he’s against torture. But, when the cards go on the table he VOTES for it. He plays honorable crusader for the media, but votes as just another Republican foot soldier.

Right now McCain is criticizing Obama for not pledging to take public financing for the general election AT THE SAME TIME McCain is trying to pull out of public financing for the primary?! What?! And, McCain can’t pull out of public financing because it looks like he’s broken the rules by taken loans early in his campaign which would be against the rules.

Now we find out that he’s cozying up to lobbyists, possibly having an affair, and giving out legislation as sexual favors. Should any of us say we’re surprised?

  232. Shayne says:

John McCain is only as much of a war hero as John Kerry is. Rethugs act like McCain gave himself up as a prisoner to save his fellow troops. Didn’t happen. Karl Rove showed us all that war heroes are to be destroyed. Lucky for McCain Democrats have a conscience, Republicans should take a lesson.

  233. hellinabucket says:

Well said Shayne. The true meat of this story (to me at least) is the improper intrusion by McCain into something he shouldn’t have put his nose into. It has the stench of bullying.
