54 percent:

Americans who expect a recession within the next year, according to a new Reuters/Zogby poll. This number is up from 45 percent in January, and includes 41 percent of Republicans. Only 36 percent of Republicans believe the country is headed in the right direction.

I thought the consensus was we were already IN a recession…?

  3. Witch1 says:

Where the hell have these people been.?..With in a year.? Crap…We have been having inflation for the past 5 year’s at a huge rate and recession for over a year already….Unplug your head’s from your butt’s and look around…..Blessings, we need them..

  4. missmolly says:

Are the people who think we’re ALREADY in a recession included in this 54%? Or are they a separate slice of the pie?

  5. lefty says:

Do the remaining 64 percent of Republicans realize that it’s the REPUBLICANS who have taken this country in the wrong direction?Or are they going to blame that on Clinton too?

On the bright side it’s a good sign that 41% of Republicans have matured past the stage of just swallowing whole every bit of propaganda and baloney their rightwing corporations and media feed them.

  6. oldtree says:

baaaa. baaaaa. The fed lowers the borrowing rate and the banks all raise their lending rates because they have been caught with their hands in Mary Ellen’s pants.
The coffee is brewing, the grass is green, the sky is still blue ( in some places) and reality won’t break through those of you that don’t realize the recession began some time ago, it is the “depression” that they will not discuss. Calling it a recession is rather confusing to anyone that knows it’s a lie.

please, everyone read and learn about how your government protects only those that are going to take everything you have away from you.

  7. Witch1 says:

Truthout has an article about Vermont and Hew Hampshire’s work to arrest and impeach bush/cheney…Maybe if they won’t go there someone could deliver them..Blessings

  8. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Are you suggesting an extraordinary rendition, Witch1?

  9. 2MillionLightYearsToAndromeda says:

Does Ben Bernanke Have to Go?

…It is becoming increasing clear that we are facing the worst financial meltdown since the Depression, and Mr. Bernanke was caught asleep at the wheel.

In testimonies before Congress and other statements he repeatedly assured the public that there was no bubble in the housing market, arguing that fundamental factors explained the unprecedented 70 percent increase in inflation-adjusted house prices from 1996 to 2006. Such reassurances undoubtedly helped sustain the bubble until it finally reached the bursting point last year.

Even after the bubble began to burst, Mr. Bernanke failed to recognize the seriousness of the problem. As recently as last July, he told Congress that, “for the most part, financial markets have remained supportive of economic growth,” failing to see the financial tsunami that was about to engulf the economy and push it into a recession.

  10. RUCerious says:

With oil prices over $100 a barrel, it’s be a quick slide when gas is over 4.00 a gallon and that ripples through prices we pay for groceries, and everything else that must be transported by truck.

  11. Leftside Annie says:

Pssst, Keltoi – it’s the REPUBLICANS who are slow on the uptake.

It’s that Kool-Aid induced somnolence, yanno?

  12. RUCerious says:

TRoS, that would be an EXTRAORDINARY rendition, wouldn’t it!
The entire planet would be ecstatic!

  13. Zimzone says:

The (R)ecession hit last June. They’re trying to stall a Depression.

Some analysts predict $150 / barrel oil prices by June. Bush is still adding to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, even though we’ve never had this much stored.

Bush needs a very big awakening of Fear to pull off martial law, so D+O=ML, or, Depression & Oil will allow him to initiate martial law.

Disclaimer, I am not an economist, mathematician, or a politician. I’m also not a Republican.

  14. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Or plane, RU. The ultimate ripple effect is going to be PAINFUL. On the other hand, goods produced locally, instead of across country and shipped, especially stuff like ice cream that must be refrigerated the whole time, will do much better.

    Think globally, buy locally.

  15. Miles Tougeaux says:

This poll may be skewed by the fact that many Republicans see a democratic president (& congress) in 2009 as inevitable.

  16. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Good catch of the day, RU.

EXTRAordinary rendition indeed. People like to party hardy on New Year’s Eve. HAH! Wait until Jan 19, 2009 and the Countdown to Midnight!

  17. Jackie says:

To poll results show why it was so easy for the Bush Administration to steal the election twice. Obama is smart to use empty words to do the same thing. Let’s hope Mrs. Obama doesn’t start showing us who she really is before the election. Alot of people will be surprised to see how fake she is and full of herself. McCain only needs to let Obama do some more of his lies aka missteps to end his chances of winning.

  26. natisman says:

So does this mean that mean that that RePUGs are throughly reputing the Bushboy and his possee. I don’t think they can see that far and after looking at Billo or Hannity or listening to Rush they will somehow blame all this on those defeatists in Congress, you know the Dems.

No. Notice GOPpers think we may go into recession “within the next year”.

The recession will officially start on Jan. 22, 2008. It will all be Barak Obama’s fault.

  38. deebaser says:

#33 MO never said “proud of our country FOR THE FIRST TIME” that was a lazy misquote from a Fox correspondant even more lazily parroted by you.

I’m slowly admitting this to myself too. There’s just something so rote about Frank’s posts, something so uninspired, that he’s either a parody troll or a paid operative who hates his job.

  45. RUCerious says:

If gigi’s going to post verbatim, how about adding the SPOKEN emphasis on words like REALLY??

  50. gummitch says:

I see nothing at all to complain about in Michelle Obama’s remarks. She might have figured out a different way to say that without leaving herself open to fingerpointing from the trolls and wingnuts, but it was an honest, heartfelt appreciation of a startling moment in our history: there really is a very good chance that a man of mixed race will be elected President. Good for her.

  51. shoeless says:

There was no such emphasis in her spoken word. Follow the link and listen.

  53. Jackie says:

I remember the history books showed how slaves brought to the US prayed for changed and had hope.
Proud strong people who were in a land. But their prayers were answered by action and planning as God must of said words aren’t enough. Men and Woman spoke the words of hope/change but put action behind it yes strong action. Dr. King who is so often used by Senator Obama, spoke the words we all remember I Have A Dream, but he put action behind those words he had a plan he even went to jail many times. Yes Mrs. Obama is living as she said the riches part of her life watching her husband, but to earn what you get you will never loose as we saw with Dr. King and others. I’ll just see if Americans make a third mistake or as Senator Obama calls it misstep again.

I’m not a troll I’m an African American with a son in Iraq, but I guess that doesn’t count for much in American anymore.

Unless their – the 36% Reps- definition/understanding of “Right Direction” is different from rest of us.

I suspect the truth is that either Frank M is a brilliant parodist (he’d have to be, to stay in character this long), or a paid troll whose only objective is to take a dump in the middle of a thread and leave. Or if he has a real attack of diarrhea, he may hang around a bit.

As far as nobody being this obtuse — I direct your attention to the current occupant of the White House, who can see no connection between our economy and all the wars we are currently involved in.

    Comment by missmolly — February 21, 2008 @ 3:18 pm

You’re probably right, missmolly — it’s that age-old question: is George W. Bush stupid? Or is he dishonest?

Personally I think his inability to connect his martial adventures to the coming recession (if we’re lucky) is not one of obtuseness but rather of cowardice born of self-preservation.

I suspect that Dubya knows there is a connection but refuses to admit it, even to himself, for fear of the damage that truth might cause to his already severely battered self-esteem. It’s repressed.

That’s what I think, anyway. But I fully acknowledge that he just may not be bright enough to make the connection.
