Limbaugh Spins NYT Story As Hate Radio Victory: McCain Should ‘Understand Who His Friends Are’

Rush Limbaugh and other hate radio talkers have aggressively attacked the candidacy pf Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Today on his radio show, Limbaugh responded to the explosive New York Times story on McCain’s relationship with lobbyist Vicki Iseman by spinning it as a victory for hate radio.

According to Limbaugh, this episode is the predictable consequence of McCain shunning him and other hate radio pundits:

The important question for John McCain today is, is he going to learn the right lesson from this, and what is the lesson? The lesson is liberals are to be defeated. You cannot walk across the aisle with them. You cannot reach across the aisle. You cannot welcome their media members on your bus and get all cozy with them and expect eternal love from them. You are a Republican. [...]

There’s a great opportunity here for Senator McCain to learn the right lesson and understand who his friends are and who his enemies are. He’s had that backwards for way too long.

Listen to Limbaugh’s comments here:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/02/limbaughmccainnyt.320.40.flv]

Right-wing pundit Laura Ingraham was similarly self-righteous today, stating:

I ask the McCain campaign this question: Do you think you need talk radio now? Do you think that talk radio’s important to set the record straight, or do you think a press conference, where the media is shouting question after question at you — do you think that’s going to put an end to all of this?

Right wing pundits still don’t like McCain, but they’re willing to give him a second chance — as long as the senator is willing to see the light and change his ways. David Brody of CBN believes that this New York Times “hit job” may seen as “a conservative badge of honor” and “could actually help John McCain.”

Always classy, Limbaugh ended his segment by saying that he wasn’t surprised that The New York Times published an unfavorable piece on McCain. “It’s as predictable as Ted Kennedy finding a bar at happy hour,” he said.

Transcript:

RUSH: Would you give me a break? You’re surprised that Page Six-type gossip is on the front page of the New York Times? Where have you been? How in the world can anybody be surprised at the New York Times? I cannot believe how everybody’s missing this! I even have guys from The Politico, Jonathan Martin saying, “You got a reaction?” I sent him a couple paragraphs, and it’s being misinterpreted a bit. I guess I wasn’t clear enough. Anyway, greetings, folks. Here we are with another three hours of broadcast excellence at the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies. It’s great to have you with us. The telephone number is 800-282-2882. The e-mail address is ElRushbo@eibnet.com.

What have I always said that today is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt? It is this: If you let the media make you, you are subjecting yourself to the media being able to destroy you. Senator McCain — the important thing about what has happened here in the New York Times, the only important thing to me — I don’t care what’s in this story. The story is not the story. The story is that this paper endorsed McCain, sat on this story and now puts it out just prior to McCain wrapping up the nomination. And McCain says he’s disappointed. Why? Why is anybody disappointed or surprised but this? They are who they are. A snake is a snake. A tiger is a tiger. The New York Times is the New York Times. Folks, if you expect me to be angry about the story and angry at the New York Times, you have tuned to the wrong radio show. I refuse to get mad when something I have predicted is going to happen, happens. I refuse to get mad when something I know is true, is true. It’s a total waste of energy.

Whether you’re a conservative Republican or not, you are a Republican. At some point, the people you cozy up to, either to do legislation or to get cozy media stories, are going to turn on you. They are snakes. If the right lesson is not learned from this, then it will have proved to be of no value. There’s a great opportunity here for Senator McCain to learn the right lesson and understand who his friends are and who his enemies are. He’s had that backwards for way too long. He has thought the New York Times is his friend. He has thought Chris Matthews and these other people in the Drive-By Media are his friends. They aren’t. That’s the lesson today.

The story is not the story. The story is the Drive-By Media turning on it’s favorite maverick trying to take him out. The media picked the Republican candidate. The New York Times endorsed that candidate while they sat on this story, and now with utter predictability, they are trying to destroy him. This is what you get when you walk across the aisle and try to make these people your friends. Why should any of us be surprised or even angry at what the New York Times is doing here trying to take out John McCain? Those of you who listen regularly should have been expecting this all along because it’s utterly predictable. It’s as predictable as the sun rising in the morning. It’s as predictable as Ted Kennedy finding a bar at happy hour.

  5. BrianFL says:

Listen to the way these maniacs talk. Being a Republicans means simply opposing Democrats according to Limbaugh. It’s not about being for certain issues, or wanting the best for the country, it’s simply about opposing Democrats. Rush’s dream for America is seeing us back in a Civil War killing each other, and his biggest fear is a truly united country that doesn’t see everything along party lines.

The NY Times that didn’t cover the Downing St. Memos which were smoking gun proof of being lied into war?

    Must I go on?

  12. Miles Tougeaux says:

Ah.. I wondered how Limbo was going to work his way back from McCain trashing: He’s going to embrace McCain as a born again conservative who has rejected his moderate past.

  14. BrianFL says:

I heard earlier that the Drudge Report actually broke the affair story a while back. If that’s the case, how can Republicans spin this as some liberal media conspiracy? Is Matt Drudge now a liberal? And if the sources are former McCain staffers, doesn’t that hurt the whole “liberal smear” argument? Was it a vast liberal conspiracy that infiltrated McCain’s staff?

  37. missmolly says:

Let’s see if I have this straight. The New York Times runs a story on an old lobbying/conflict of interest/possibly sex scandal concerning McCain — fueled by conservative sources such as Drudge and former McCain staffers.

Rush is playing the “be afraid — be very afraid” card to McCain, the message being “these are LIBERALS out to get you, and for you to be safe, you must become one of us!”

There was a time when I wouldn’t believe that McCain would be dumb enough to fall for that. However, in light of his recent whoring to the right in order to gain acceptance that he doesn’t need, I’ll believe anything.

  38. Buckie Boy says:

With friends like this, who needs enemies?

  40. Shayne says:

Limbaugh should love McCain. After all McCain has a special affection for drug addicts who get busted for perscriptions drugs just like his wife Cindy. With McCain as President Rush could get all the illegal perscriptions he wants and never be prosecuted. Cindy never went to jail.

  42. Jason M. Hendler says:

Actually, Rush had predicted that the liberal media was selecting McCain for his eventual undoing. Romney was just too clean and too competent to slander, so the liberal media steered everyone towards people on whom they had dirt.

Today, Rush got to say that “I told you so….”

The only thing that Rush left out was that Michelle Obama’s hatred of America was getting too much play in the press, so this story was inserted to divert attention away from it.

  43. hellinabucket says:

Is Rush mad at the NYT’s for releasing this story, or is he mad at Drudge?

Drudge didn’t fuel it, missmolly, he alluded to the existence of the story and the fact that McCain was urging the NYT to spike it. I have read the article; it seems like every allegation in there is second hand, unsourced and 8 years old. I would be very surprised if this story had any legs unless there is more forthcoming.

If she really feels that way, she does her husband no good in his quest for the presidency for saying so on national TV.

BTW, her explanation of her remarks made no mention of race, but of the change Barrack has brought to the political process.

Because she didn’t say that. She said “This is the first time in my adult life I have been proud of my country” – big difference.

Even assuming her comment DID pertain to race, which she has never said and I do not believe, was she not proud when we got our first black Secretary of State? Or FEMALE black Sec. of State? For that matter, wasn’t she proud of her country when her husband was elected to the US Senate?

I actually understand what she is saying, but saying it the way she did was an unnecessary screw up, and I am a big Obama supporter.

Yeah, Gigi is right; it’s much worse for someone to admit that they used cocaine when they were younger than to dodge the question with a casual dismissal, oh, like this:

When exactly did Obama serve in the military?

    Bush served.
    McCain served.

    Obama gave speaches.

    Comment by good_golly — February 21, 2008 @ 4:23 pm

Are you implying that Obama is inadequate to serve as president because he has no military experience? Or are you just trying to deflect attention from hellinabucket’s point about the way Bush handled his military service?

Bush skated into the Guard to avoid getting sent to Vietnam. And then reneged on his 6-year contract to the government. To compare Bush’s service to McCain’s is laughable.

I served in the military, too — in the U.S. Navy. I was in for six years, most of which was reserve duty (one weekend a month, two weeks a year). I was never in any physical danger, and the farthest I ever had to serve away from “home” was on the other side of this country. My service was very similar to Dubya’s (with one critical difference — I DID attend all my drills until my six years was up). However, I would NEVER equate what I did with the service of somebody who actually went to a war zone and got shot at.

That said — I believe that military service is pretty irrelevant in this election. First — Bush isn’t running. Second — Bush beat Kerry (who actually DID go to Vietnam and get shot at) in 2004, showing that Americans really aren’t swayed by war records. Third — Even though McCain has some legitimate cred as a former POW, most voters are going to evaluate him based on his record and positions today. Fourth — Obama came of age after the draft. He was never drafted. Is he to be blasted because he never volunteered? If that’s the case, I hope you remember this litmus test in future years when GOP post-baby boomers are running.

Lastly — you appear to be jumping on the bandwagon of “Obama’s speaking ability is a bad thing.” What’s up with that? What’s wrong with being eloquent? After eight years of Bushspeak, I’m kind of looking forward to a president who has a command of the English language.

And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction. And just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment I’ve seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic, common issues and it’s made me proud.”

  229. regular_joe says:

The important question for John McCain today is, is he going to learn the right lesson from this, and what is the lesson? The lesson is liberals are to be defeated. You cannot walk across the aisle with them. You cannot reach across the aisle. You cannot welcome their media members on your bus and get all cozy with them and expect eternal love from them. You are a Republican.

I wonder if David Broder and the Unity ‘08 crowd are getting any of this? I doubt it.

According to Fatboy, Republicans “cannot reach across the aisle” because if they compromised, then they might not have everything their way, and as we’ve learned in the wake of the Newt Gingrich’s “Contract on America”, when Republicans are in charge, it’s their way, or the highway.

In reality, over the last decade of Republican “leadership” in Washington, bipartisanship has ceased to exist — unless Democrats simply cave and give in to Republican demands.

But I guess that’s one of the big problems with “conservatives”. In their blighted world view, always insisting on having everything their way is considered a good thing; to grown-ups, it’s considered self-centered and childish.

Left pat said there is no free press. I corrected that false statement. Looks like pat derailed the thread. ;)

No, you lied, your usual technique to derail a thread that is embarrassing to your side. Your facts are like your turds; coming from your ass.

turn on the televison or radio, there’s the proof.

So your little tirades are supposed to distract me from the fact that you made a statement that is false and you know it? Sorry, bud. I prefer to stick to actual discussion of issues. Got any proof, yet, that libs are not allowed to purchase and operate media outlets? ;)

    I guessing the latter…

Sorry, bud, that just proves that they don’t purchase as many as do conservatives not that they are not allowed to do so. They would rather have someone else take the inititive to create the business and then use government to force them to allow libs to use facilities made possible through the work of others. There are plenty of lib billionaires who could buy or create the businesses and they are free to do so. ;)

Always classy, Limbaugh ended his segment by saying that he wasn’t surprised that The New York Times published an unfavorable piece on McCain. “It’s as predictable as Ted Kennedy finding a bar at happy hour,” he said.

  269. Jason M. Hendler says:

I’ve been known to use a rhetorical question or two once in awhile, also. But I’ll just make my point with it and move on.

I don’t keep posting it and posting it and posting it when everyone ignores me.

    That’s just pathetic.

It might be even more pathetic than the point the troll is trying to make.

  276. shoeless says:

Look, on the upside, at least I have started to find things on which I can agree with Hillary Clinton, i.e. that Obama gives good speaches, but has no substance, has never accomplished anything, and would be bad for our Country. I agree with Hillary on that at least. We’ve found common ground.

    Comment by good_golly

LOL! Wow! The wingnut racists are so scared of Obama, they are now taking up for Hillary Clinton! I never thought I’d see the day.

Get used to it now. President Barak Obama.

  277. Don in Texas says:

Obama should take a lesson from Fatass. As Senator Edwards warned, “You can’t make nice with these people.”

Obama errs when he promises to “reach out to Republicans.” The bastards will bite his hand off.

Hillary will fight them tooth and nail and that’s what we must do if the Constitution is to be restored!

  278. shoeless says:

Is Michelle Obama claiming that you don’t have any real pride in America, unless it is black pride?

    Comment by Jason M. Hendler

No. She is saying that she can not be really proud of the more than 200 years of American history in which a member of her race could not even be considered for president.

Of course, an obvious white supremacist like you is very proud of that fact. You are just scared to death that era is coming to an end.

In a packed hearing room on Feb 19th, under a carved wooden sign reading “Live Free or Die”, the New Hampshire House committee of State-Federal Relations and Veterans’ Affairs heard testimony on Representative Betty Hall’s HR 24, which calls on the U.S. Congress to begin impeachment hearings for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Just some more bad news for all the sick reichtard phucks.

  287. flavorino says:

Why would anyone want that fat draft dodging cowardly pill popping drug addict as a friend?
Everyone knows a junkie can’t be trusted. They will steal, lie, back stab, whatever. They are sociopathic.
I consider Rush to be a junkie. Despite making millions with a microphone and a set of headphones, HE TOOK SO MUCH HILLBILLY HEROIN THAT HE LOST HIS HEARING AND GOT BUSTED FOR SENDING HIS HOUSEKEEPER OUT TO SCORE FOR HIM!
He hasn’t appeared to change one bit since then in his speech and mannerisms.
If you watch the video of him going off today you will see that he appears to be a complete nut.

  288. alpuz3 says:

    I love it too!!!

Looks like Mc Cain will be the next President continuing the great Republican tradition. There’s NO WAY Obama can compete. This crazy, idiolic reaction to him will eventually wear off and when push comes to shove the American people will shove this brotha out!!!

    Comment by John Kerry — February 21, 2008 @ 8:41 pm

Awesome. Keep slinging that message, JK. In those exact words. You’re doing a service for your country. How does that feel? Actually doing something that will benefit this country?

    You’re positively an asset.

  289. Above the Clouds says:

The biggest fear all Republicans should have is when the millions of voters who show up for Obama will be pulling the levers for Democrats across the ticket. McCain is the new face of the Bush/GOP/Neocon failure. No wonder Rove bailed.

  290. Democrat Soldier says:

#50 – “You forgot to mention that Obama never went to jail for his admitted illegal purchase and repeated use of Cocaine through the age of 20, and possibly beyond.” Comment by good_golly — February 21, 2008 @ 4:17 pm

Since Pres. Bush already set this precedence, it’s no big deal.

Pres. Bush’s answer to “Did you ever use cocaine?” was “When I was young & stupid, I was young & stupid.”

    Translation: Pres. Bush used cocaine!

  291. Democrat Soldier says:

    #56 – “That’s because that never happened Buckie Boy.” Comment by good_golly — February 21, 2008 @ 4:20 pm

    Yes. Yes, it did.

Again, I’m using the Pres. Bush method: I do NOT have to show proof of evidence. YOU have to prove it DIDN’T happen!

  292. bluestatedon says:

It’s a foregone conclusion that McCain will crawl on his hands and knees to Rush’s studio, and like he did with Bush after the S. Carolina primary, will hug Rush and abjectly ask for his approval.

  293. LThomas says:

When Rush Limbaugh talks about McCain’s Republican “friends”, could he be referring to the South Carolina primary in 2000? This was when a desperate Bush Jr campaign took the McCain’s adoption of two dark-complexioned orphans from Bangladesh, and turned that into a sneaky, phone-based rumor attack claiming that the children were the illegitimate product of McCain’s extramarital affair with a black American woman!
As if that wasn’t enough of a heartless smear, the Bush/Rove team used that same automated phone rumor technique to spread the idea that McCain’s 5 years as a POW in North Vietnam had left him mentally and emotionally unfit to be U.S. President! Good Lord! Is that the patriotic way those dreamland-only-combat-veterans, Bush Jr, Cheney and Rove go about Supporting and Honoring the real Troops and their sacrifices?? With GOP armchair-warrior friends like that, who needs enemies?

  294. crwlarry says:

I can understand what Rush said. It makes perfect sense. As a southern Democrat who voted for Hillary, I can not in good stead vote for man such as Obama who has no experience and is going to use, more than likely, race as an issue to harm whites. Not a pleasant thought for southerners.
