Rush Limbaugh and other hate radio talkers have aggressively attacked the candidacy pf Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Today on his radio show, Limbaugh responded to the explosive New York Times story on McCain’s relationship with lobbyist Vicki Iseman by spinning it as a victory for hate radio.
According to Limbaugh, this episode is the predictable consequence of McCain shunning him and other hate radio pundits:
The important question for John McCain today is, is he going to learn the right lesson from this, and what is the lesson? The lesson is liberals are to be defeated. You cannot walk across the aisle with them. You cannot reach across the aisle. You cannot welcome their media members on your bus and get all cozy with them and expect eternal love from them. You are a Republican. […]
There’s a great opportunity here for Senator McCain to learn the right lesson and understand who his friends are and who his enemies are. He’s had that backwards for way too long.
Listen to Limbaugh’s comments here:
Right-wing pundit Laura Ingraham was similarly self-righteous today, stating:
I ask the McCain campaign this question: Do you think you need talk radio now? Do you think that talk radio’s important to set the record straight, or do you think a press conference, where the media is shouting question after question at you — do you think that’s going to put an end to all of this?
Right wing pundits still don’t like McCain, but they’re willing to give him a second chance — as long as the senator is willing to see the light and change his ways. David Brody of CBN believes that this New York Times “hit job” may seen as “a conservative badge of honor” and “could actually help John McCain.”
Always classy, Limbaugh ended his segment by saying that he wasn’t surprised that The New York Times published an unfavorable piece on McCain. “It’s as predictable as Ted Kennedy finding a bar at happy hour,” he said.
Transcript:
RUSH: Would you give me a break? You’re surprised that Page Six-type gossip is on the front page of the New York Times? Where have you been? How in the world can anybody be surprised at the New York Times? I cannot believe how everybody’s missing this! I even have guys from The Politico, Jonathan Martin saying, “You got a reaction?” I sent him a couple paragraphs, and it’s being misinterpreted a bit. I guess I wasn’t clear enough. Anyway, greetings, folks. Here we are with another three hours of broadcast excellence at the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies. It’s great to have you with us. The telephone number is 800-282-2882. The e-mail address is ElRushbo@eibnet.com.
What have I always said that today is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt? It is this: If you let the media make you, you are subjecting yourself to the media being able to destroy you. Senator McCain — the important thing about what has happened here in the New York Times, the only important thing to me — I don’t care what’s in this story. The story is not the story. The story is that this paper endorsed McCain, sat on this story and now puts it out just prior to McCain wrapping up the nomination. And McCain says he’s disappointed. Why? Why is anybody disappointed or surprised but this? They are who they are. A snake is a snake. A tiger is a tiger. The New York Times is the New York Times. Folks, if you expect me to be angry about the story and angry at the New York Times, you have tuned to the wrong radio show. I refuse to get mad when something I have predicted is going to happen, happens. I refuse to get mad when something I know is true, is true. It’s a total waste of energy.
Whether you’re a conservative Republican or not, you are a Republican. At some point, the people you cozy up to, either to do legislation or to get cozy media stories, are going to turn on you. They are snakes. If the right lesson is not learned from this, then it will have proved to be of no value. There’s a great opportunity here for Senator McCain to learn the right lesson and understand who his friends are and who his enemies are. He’s had that backwards for way too long. He has thought the New York Times is his friend. He has thought Chris Matthews and these other people in the Drive-By Media are his friends. They aren’t. That’s the lesson today.
The story is not the story. The story is the Drive-By Media turning on it’s favorite maverick trying to take him out. The media picked the Republican candidate. The New York Times endorsed that candidate while they sat on this story, and now with utter predictability, they are trying to destroy him. This is what you get when you walk across the aisle and try to make these people your friends. Why should any of us be surprised or even angry at what the New York Times is doing here trying to take out John McCain? Those of you who listen regularly should have been expecting this all along because it’s utterly predictable. It’s as predictable as the sun rising in the morning. It’s as predictable as Ted Kennedy finding a bar at happy hour.

February 21st, 2008 at 3:29 pmLaura Ingraham:
I ask the McCain campaign this question: Do you think you need talk radio now?
After all, someone’s got to catapult the propaganda!
February 21st, 2008 at 3:31 pm” Do you think that talk radio’s important to set the record straight, or do you think a press conference, where the media is shouting question after question at you — do you think that’s going to put an end to all of this?”
Translation: do you want us to spin the news your way, or would you rather have the truth exposed?
February 21st, 2008 at 3:31 pmListen to the way these maniacs talk. Being a Republicans means simply opposing Democrats according to Limbaugh. It’s not about being for certain issues, or wanting the best for the country, it’s simply about opposing Democrats. Rush’s dream for America is seeing us back in a Civil War killing each other, and his biggest fear is a truly united country that doesn’t see everything along party lines.
February 21st, 2008 at 3:34 pmPut THAT TRAITOR in Gitmo, along with Bush, Cheney and the PNAC WAR CRIMINALS.
President Obama simply needs to declare them as “enemy combatants”.
“You’re either WITH McCain and Bush OR
February 21st, 2008 at 3:34 pmYou’re with the USA and the TRUTH!”
OxyRush: “The media picked the Republican candidate.”
Translation: The wrong media picked the Republican candidate. It should have been us, radio, ME!! I’m the “excellence in broadcasting”. I’m the “talent on loan from God”. It should have been me. *sniff* It should have been me. WWWAAAHHH. I want my oxy!
February 21st, 2008 at 3:35 pmIs Limbaugh or the NYT more to be despised? Hyenas pulling at the same carcass.

Actually, TRAITORS like Bush, McTraitor, Cheney, the PNAC scumbags and Rush should ALL be despised.
But I don’t HATE anyone, so just send the TRAITORS to Gitmo.
Until they DROP DEAD and go home to hell and MASTER Satan, along with TRAITOR Ronnie Reagan, now DEAD and BURNING!
February 21st, 2008 at 3:37 pmRush: “You cannot walk across the aisle with them. You cannot reach across the aisle.”
Translation: Bipartisanship is something to be avoided. DO NOT bring America together, drive it apart!
So much for yet another Bush Promise! Well, we knew that one was a lie the second it left his mouth, but still, it’s good to have proof that Republicans hate America!

February 21st, 2008 at 3:38 pmThe NY Times of Judith Miller who sold us a war? The NY Times that held off on the NSA Spying program during Bush’s 2004 run? The NY Times that cancelled a story of Bush wearing an earpiece during his debates with John Kerry days before the election? The NY Times that didn’t cover the Downing St. Memos which were smoking gun proof of being lied into war?
Must I go on?
February 21st, 2008 at 3:38 pmAh.. I wondered how Limbo was going to work his way back from McCain trashing: He’s going to embrace McCain as a born again conservative who has rejected his moderate past.
Oh, wait… thats what McCain is doing. Nevermind.
February 21st, 2008 at 3:39 pmThis is like the fights you have with siblings where anything goes. But let just one outsider attack a member of the family, no matter how righteous, and the family closes ranks and defends.
February 21st, 2008 at 3:39 pmHumans are an odd species.
I heard earlier that the Drudge Report actually broke the affair story a while back. If that’s the case, how can Republicans spin this as some liberal media conspiracy? Is Matt Drudge now a liberal? And if the sources are former McCain staffers, doesn’t that hurt the whole “liberal smear” argument? Was it a vast liberal conspiracy that infiltrated McCain’s staff?
February 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pm‘The lesson is liberals are to be defeated. You cannot walk across the aisle with them. You cannot reach across the aisle. ‘
That’s why this country is in the mess it is right now. Thanks to Newt, everyone stopped talking to each other and working together. Are these people still in high school? It’s like the jocks and cheerleaders against everyone who isn’t like them. It just makes my skin crawl.
February 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pm“McCain should understand who his friends are.”
Yeah, and Rush Limpdick isn’t one of them, nor is Trannie Coulter.

just a thought…
February 21st, 2008 at 3:43 pmNice reich-wing “logic”: Drugbaugh and the rest of the reich-wing hate crowd have been bashing McLame for months. They have even questioned his military service and dedication to the country. Yeah, McLame really needs the 18%ers on hate radio.
February 21st, 2008 at 3:43 pmI don’t understand why these dis/mis - information radio talkers hate McCain so much.
He’s for the tax cuts.
He’s for continuing the occupation 100 more years.
And now he’s pro-torture.
Isn’t this almost their entire agenda?
Do they think that a President McCain would defy a policy paper from AEI?
February 21st, 2008 at 3:44 pm“The lesson is liberals are to be defeated.”

February 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pmHis email address is elrushbo? Ewww - is that what the sweet young things in the Dominican have to call him?
This story gave me an image of a bunch of sneering, jeering yahoos circled around someone who is drowning yelling, “Have you learned your lesson yet?! Are you ready for us to throw you a life preserver yet? Will you beg us to help you and tell us how much you need us?!”
Bullies and thugs and definitely a negative element that is not good for this country.

February 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pmReich-wingers prove once again that they will carry the water of anyone….even the “people” they can’t stand. How quickly the reich-wing sheeple fall in line when the NYT has the balls to call a GOPer on the carpet and report the truth. These reich-wing hate mongers have been blasted away at McLame for months, but now they put their “values” and stances to take up arms against the NYT. Pathetic.

February 21st, 2008 at 3:57 pmMcCain and Limbaugh were on the same side mocking teenage Chelsea Clinton’s appearance in public in the 1990’s.
February 21st, 2008 at 4:00 pmMcCain knows that his chance of getting elected does not lie with emnity airwaves, it is the moderates and the independent that caused McCains Phoenix like rise after the first crash and burn.

Come on folks, apparently Limburger misplaced his drugs. Not to worry, little Cindy will be glad to share, they cost her nothing, so I am sure there are plenty to go around. February 21st, 2008 at 4:06 pmFinally, the right-wing radio nutjobs found a reason to back McCain. He has been selling out to law breaking mega-corporations for sex and money. He really is a Republican after all.
February 21st, 2008 at 4:08 pmLet’s see if I have this straight. The New York Times runs a story on an old lobbying/conflict of interest/possibly sex scandal concerning McCain — fueled by conservative sources such as Drudge and former McCain staffers.
Rush is playing the “be afraid — be very afraid” card to McCain, the message being “these are LIBERALS out to get you, and for you to be safe, you must become one of us!”
There was a time when I wouldn’t believe that McCain would be dumb enough to fall for that. However, in light of his recent whoring to the right in order to gain acceptance that he doesn’t need, I’ll believe anything.
February 21st, 2008 at 4:08 pmWith friends like this, who needs enemies?

I think radical radio has drank too much of its own Orwellian kool-aid. They dont even make sense anymore
February 21st, 2008 at 4:13 pmLimbaugh should love McCain. After all McCain has a special affection for drug addicts who get busted for perscriptions drugs just like his wife Cindy. With McCain as President Rush could get all the illegal perscriptions he wants and never be prosecuted. Cindy never went to jail.
February 21st, 2008 at 4:15 pm“It’s as predictable as Ted Kennedy finding a bar at happy hour”
— said the addict Rush Limbaugh. Typical Repuke hypocracy.
February 21st, 2008 at 4:16 pmActually, Rush had predicted that the liberal media was selecting McCain for his eventual undoing. Romney was just too clean and too competent to slander, so the liberal media steered everyone towards people on whom they had dirt.
Today, Rush got to say that “I told you so….”
The only thing that Rush left out was that Michelle Obama’s hatred of America was getting too much play in the press, so this story was inserted to divert attention away from it.
February 21st, 2008 at 4:16 pmIs Rush mad at the NYT’s for releasing this story, or is he mad at Drudge?
February 21st, 2008 at 4:16 pmLet’s see if I have this straight. The New York Times runs a story on an old lobbying/conflict of interest/possibly sex scandal concerning McCain — fueled by conservative sources such as Drudge and former McCain staffers.
Comment by missmolly — February 21, 2008 @ 4:08 pm
Drudge didn’t fuel it, missmolly, he alluded to the existence of the story and the fact that McCain was urging the NYT to spike it. I have read the article; it seems like every allegation in there is second hand, unsourced and 8 years old. I would be very surprised if this story had any legs unless there is more forthcoming.

Can’t seem to locate the fat tub of goo saying it before this time.

And if you can’t, would you be open to the idea that Rush is nothing more than an alarmist entertainer.

BTW, her explanation of her remarks made no mention of race, but of the change Barrack has brought to the political process.

Because she didn’t say that. She said “This is the first time in my adult life I have been proud of my country” - big difference.
Even assuming her comment DID pertain to race, which she has never said and I do not believe, was she not proud when we got our first black Secretary of State? Or FEMALE black Sec. of State? For that matter, wasn’t she proud of her country when her husband was elected to the US Senate?
I actually understand what she is saying, but saying it the way she did was an unnecessary screw up, and I am a big Obama supporter.

Because everyone knows what she was talking about. 99% of American history has been pure hell for black women. An African-American being elected president is the best thing that has ever happened to people like herself, and for our country.
The racists are afraid that most of the country is becoming enlightened, and they will be left behind to wallow in their bigotry alone.

Had this story been published two months earlier,McCain will not be the front runner now. He might be a history.
It is not enough for a candidate to think that he is the greatest, the most honest and the smarter…It is up to people to judge him..and that’s where McCain has problem now.

Bush refused to discuss his younger years for fear of sending “a signal to children that whatever I may have done is okay.”

February 21st, 2008 at 4:57 pmWhen exactly did Obama serve in the military?
Bush served.
McCain served.
Obama gave speaches.
Comment by good_golly — February 21, 2008 @ 4:23 pm
Are you implying that Obama is inadequate to serve as president because he has no military experience? Or are you just trying to deflect attention from hellinabucket’s point about the way Bush handled his military service?
Bush skated into the Guard to avoid getting sent to Vietnam. And then reneged on his 6-year contract to the government. To compare Bush’s service to McCain’s is laughable.
I served in the military, too — in the U.S. Navy. I was in for six years, most of which was reserve duty (one weekend a month, two weeks a year). I was never in any physical danger, and the farthest I ever had to serve away from “home” was on the other side of this country. My service was very similar to Dubya’s (with one critical difference — I DID attend all my drills until my six years was up). However, I would NEVER equate what I did with the service of somebody who actually went to a war zone and got shot at.
That said — I believe that military service is pretty irrelevant in this election. First — Bush isn’t running. Second — Bush beat Kerry (who actually DID go to Vietnam and get shot at) in 2004, showing that Americans really aren’t swayed by war records. Third — Even though McCain has some legitimate cred as a former POW, most voters are going to evaluate him based on his record and positions today. Fourth — Obama came of age after the draft. He was never drafted. Is he to be blasted because he never volunteered? If that’s the case, I hope you remember this litmus test in future years when GOP post-baby boomers are running.
Lastly — you appear to be jumping on the bandwagon of “Obama’s speaking ability is a bad thing.” What’s up with that? What’s wrong with being eloquent? After eight years of Bushspeak, I’m kind of looking forward to a president who has a command of the English language.

February 21st, 2008 at 5:04 pmI think it is very revealing that conservatives will not repeat Michelle Obama’s quote correctly. She said:
“For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction. And just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment I’ve seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic, common issues and it’s made me proud.â€

It logically follows that she was proud of her country before, but not REALLY proud. The qualifier “REALLY” is always left out of the argument.
