Last week, Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) requested that the Department of Justice’s inspector general “launch an investigation into the role DOJ officials” played “in authorizing the use of waterboarding during interrogations.” In a letter to the senators today, the head of the department’s Office of Professional Responsibility states that the inquiry will be included in the office’s “investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drafting” of the Office of Legal Counsel’s infamous torture memo.
there will never be a thorough investigation. the doj is in bushco’s back pocket.
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:09 pmRight. That’s gonna happen…
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:10 pmThe Department of Justice is going to investigate itself! Hooray!
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:15 pm(well no, not really.)
Any REAL investigation would be looking at the White House first.
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:15 pmAs with the Renzi indictment, I believe the careerists at Justice have held a finger to the electoral winds, and now think the Dems will be in charge at Justice next year, and that they need to set a clear prosecutorial boundary now, for the Democratic political appointees.
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:18 pmThe unfortunate part is that the “investigation” won’t be started until 2009 because there are so many other important matters for them to be taking care of now, like covering Bush’s a$$.

One can only hope. But you have to remember that Bush sycophant Mulkasey is at the helm of the DOJ, and he has promised Bush that he will not allow anything negative to happen to the Bush Crime Family while he is in office.
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:24 pmall these investigations would be a lot easier to carry out were they consolidated into a single RICO-based investigation of the RNC.
all the rats and all the answers are to be found inside that one corrupt organization, which has become an “ongoing criminal enterprise”, and is no longer a legitimate political party.
maybe obama will make spitzer AG. that’d bode ill for the R mafiosi.
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:37 pmI smell slow rolls in the oven.
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:38 pmAll this will do is allow the repubs to say they can’t comment on an ongoing investigation. Where have we heard that before?
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:40 pmI’ll believe it when I see it.
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:58 pmNow wait a minute, please.
It may well be that the Department of Justice is working to cast of its “Loyal Bushies” mantle. A mantle which, in my opinion, unfairly impuned the integrity of countless career attorneys within the department.
Let us wait for the events to play out before we prejudge the outcomes, please?

It’s very difficult to be optimistic when you have Bush-fatigue.
February 22nd, 2008 at 1:07 pmLet’s see, can we find some low level schmuck to pin this on?
February 22nd, 2008 at 1:19 pmZ? Are you just plain Bushed?
February 22nd, 2008 at 1:20 pmAll investigations should be placed on hold until there is a Democrat in the White House. Bush can pardon them all no matter how guilty they are. Patience and vigilance will lead to justice.

The DoJ is still investigating the DoJ over it’s own practices of prosecution, especially regarding non-conservative Judges. Does one really think the DoJ will investigate the Neoconservative arm of the OLC along with the DoJ?
