McCain witholds ‘judgment’ on Renzi indictment.

Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ), who is a member of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) National Leadership Team and a co-chair of his Arizona Leadership Team, was indicted this morning for extortion, wire fraud, money laundering and more. Asked to comment, McCain refused to pass “judgment” on Renzi, claiming that he doesn’t “know enough of the details.” As TPM’s Paul Kiel notes, McCain claimed similar ignorance when it was first revealed that Renzi was under federal investigation.

UPDATE: On a blogger conference call today, McCain said that Renzi “would probably step down as co-chair of his Arizona campaign.”

    Hey McInsane

When your boy is up on 35 DIFFERENT CRIMINAL COUNTS there aren’t many “details” other than that ………

  2. DieNowForPeace says:

Soon to be “going down in Flames McCain”.

  3. dasm says:

Doesn’t know enough of the details?? Haven’t they been around long enough? Aren’t the details now posted– well, — in detail?
McCain is such a flip-flopping, cop-outing con man. Unless, like Bush, he is reading-challenged. Maybe that explains his lack of knowledge– things the rest of us already know.

  4. gummitch says:

“But I don’t know enough of the details to make a judgment. Because I really don’t want to know anything about it, even though he’s a close friend and associate, and if you try to tell me anything about it, I’ll stick my fingers in my ears and sing la la la la.”

If McCain had actually had even a tiny microscopic speck of integrity, he would have sat Renzi down months (years?) ago and demanded an explanation, and then asked him to quietly leave the campaign.

And another inconvenient truth gets thrown under the Straight Talk Express.

Can I have some more of that straight talk, Sen. McCain?

  9. Buckie Boy says:

McCain witholds ‘judgment’ on Renzi indictment to make sure he isn’t gonna be sucked down in yet another Repukian cesspool of shame.

Why can’t the conservatives be even a little honest, what is up with these guys? Did their mommies tell them that they could do no wrong, that everything they do will be considered right as long as they say so?

Oh, it’s the greed, I got mine, screw you and corruption thing, forgot.

  11. fletc3her says:

Why bother even stepping down? McCain doesn’t care about the “opinion” of the FEC regarding campaign law, why should he care about the opinion of the courts or the rule of law in general?

  12. gummitch says:

It’s getting better for Renzi. Ouch.

Renzi Allegedly Funded First House Race With Embezzled Money

The Federal Election Commission audited now indicted Rep. Rick Renzi’s (R-Ariz.) 2001-02 campaign back in ‘04 and identified more than $369,000 in “impermissible corporate funds” given by Renzi to his campaign committee. Renzi and his attorneys said that the money was from “personal funds” and thus allowable, and the FEC, despite numerous questions about the source of the funds, took no formal action against him. Renzi had used that disputed money in 2002 to narrowly defeat Democrat George Cordova, winning with only 49% of the vote in a close general-election race.

Now, however, the Justice Department has a different explanation for where that money came from – Renzi and a business associate named Andrew Beardall were allegedly skimming hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Renzi-owned insurance company, and Renzi steered more than $400,000 of stolen money into his first run for a House seat. Thus, according to Justice, Renzi – who raised just over $1.65 million during that cycle – basically illegally redirected about a quarter of the money he used to win his race from the customers of one of his companies.

Looks like Straight Talk Express is losing more wheels than ever. From the Iseman’s scandal and Renzi’s indictment, Mr. McCain’s neighborhood looks more like a slum.

Uh oh, liberal pundits in the media are writing Hill’reh’s obituary again. I like Rush Limbaugh’s approach – until he sees the house fall on her, the ruby slippers fall off her feet, and her legs curl up under the house, he will not believe that the witch is dead.

No wonder some of the GOP faithful are willing to vote for a dude who thinks the earth is 6,000 years old over the gnarly old Pander Bear. Is there anything McCain won’t do for a vote?

  23. Shayne says:

And our own Munchkin JMH shows up to sling troll poo around the place. Oh and you’re off topic as usual. How’s that Stanford education serving you, did you figure out it isn’t in the Ivy League yet dipshit?

  24. Badger says:

As I see it…McCain has three big problems:

…He has been in the Senate since the 80’s , and therefore has an enormous number of votes, statements, and supporters for the press to sift through.
…. He claims to be a “straight talker” so he needs to address the issues that come up. NO Comment or Ignoring the questions won’t work for him.
….the press has been guilty of Not Persuing the facts during Bush’s presidency… and is not likely to be put off with obfuscation. Gotcha Journalism with blogs to point them in the right direction.

Obama’s press conferences are about Hope and the Fututre.
McCain’s press conrferences are about defending past actions.

  25. jb says:

I see JMH as a flying monkey who can’t get off the ground.

  26. ebbAndflow says:

“Innocent until proven guilty. Smear campaign. The money was obtained legally. McCain knew nothing about co-chair of leadership team. The dems orchestrated all of this. Oh, and Bill Clinton…”
That about covers the troll patrols two cents worth, doesn’t it?

  27. StratRat says:

Mr. Hendler could offer something substantial to the discussion, but like those on the right side, he feels it is better to poke fun at the candidates and compare their situations to a mythical childrens fairly tale.

I guess children like Mr. Hendler are more comfortable with simple topics they can understand – not those which have a huge impact on the direction of our country.

Oh, and Jason: Sorry to hear about the Chimpsters 19% approval rating. But, it hasn’t hit bottom yet. Stay tuned.

  28. jb says:

Lets see now, we have Mr. Keating and now Mr. Renzi. How many criminals are in the McCain clique?

The guy’s been indicted John, it doesn’t look good for your campaign. I’m worried that you haven’t dropped him like a hot potato!! I’m worried about your willingness to make sure you DO have honorable people in your campaign. C’mon John you can let him go.

    Dumb Question:

if a reasonably competent CEO were to hear that one of their major officers, with responsibility for people and money, were under investigation for crimes of financial mismanagement,

How long would it take them to ask for details ?

In short, the bozo knowingly has someone in charge of wheeling and dealing in his home state who was under investigation for financial malfeasance ?

  45. ForTruth says:

I live the fact that Renzi was indicted. He’s my Rep.

  46. questioneverything says:

What delicious poetic justice that this indictment comes down a day after the Times article. “I’ve never done any favors for anybody — lobbyist or special-interest group.” says John McCain. Ha!

  47. natisman says:

So McBush is holding for what, to see if Renzi gives him his percent of the deal!
