The Maverick is mad at reporters.

By Amanda Terkel on Feb 22nd, 2008 at 2:58 pm

The Maverick is mad at reporters.

Newsweek reports that the McCain campaign — including the senator himself — is so bitter about the recent New York Times story that it is shunning campaign reporters to the back of the plane:

mccainplane.jpg John McCain’s campaign plane is usually a pretty jovial place to be. [...]

But in the aftermath of today’s New York Times story looking at McCain’s dealings with a Washington lobbyist, the mood is decidedly different. Before McCain boarded his plane, reporters were asked to sit farther back than usual on the plane. And when McCain finally boarded the plane, he failed to offer his usual wave at reporters and opted to quickly take his seat. During the flight, the cabin was unusually quiet, save a few quick discussions McCain had with top aides Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter. Near the end of the flight, Schmidt came back to the press cabin, where, with cameras off, he railed against the New York Times for publishing its story.

At least he didn’t call them “f–ing jerks.”

Arn, that’s how Fascism works. Whip up national pride by providing an enemy.

The problem with this idea is that you have to either have a nation in dire straights (which brings its own problems) or in excellent fiscal and economic health.

We were neither, and as far as I can tell, the only people behind Bush and McCain now are the rapidly shrinking hard-core neo-conservatives.

    Comment by Marie — February 22, 2008 @ 3:55 pm

So why is McCain being an idiot? Surely that deposition will surface and expose the Maverick as a liar.

First rule of holes — when you’re in one, stop digging. McCain apparently hasn’t learned this.

Most of us have been perfectly contect to let this story drop for a couple reasons — McCain’s sex life or lack of a sex life is none of our business, and improprieties with lobbyists from years ago are old news unless they are part of a documented trend that continues today.

Yet it’s been McCain who has been making the most noise about this — holding press conferences, snubbing the press (when he’s not railing at them), and having his lackeys use the word “smear” as often as possible. Other indignant noise has been coming from the right wing, not the left.

McCain would do well to let this roll off his back. He’s already got the GOP nomination, unless he publicly pees on the steps of the Capitol or something. And by fall, who’s going to remember a story about stuff that happened eight years ago?

But throwing tantrums will just attract more attention, and there will be more opportunity to catch McCain in lies. Like this one.

  96. dwstar says:

All lobbyists are equal, but some lobbyists are more equal than others

he’s gone all animal farm on us… you heard it here first!

  97. RUCerious says:

    Goddamn depositiony thangs.

  98. pluege says:

that would be quite exciting if mccain actually gets his hands on the wheels of power. Like bush, he’s the kind of unstable hot-head that we’ve all been afraid of lo these many years could end up somewhere in the world with their finger on a nuclear trigger. Like with bush, we never imagined the unstable hot head would our guy.
    .

  99. Uncle Ho says:

This should demonstrate to all that McJowls does NOT have the temperment to high office, and under NO CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER, be trusted with his fingers on the nuclear button.

  100. Jeremy in Denver says:

TRoS: Well, you COULD say that. But I’m not sure if the headaches come from dealing with trolls or dealing with the Republican Party…

  103. Bobwurst says:

The JT has overloaded on logic. He will be replaced by the Frank M, or Southern Man model as soon and the proper filters have been upgraded.

  104. hellinabucket says:

I’ll defend your right to say it stormkrow, but I won’t defend what your saying as right.

  105. Shayne says:

Your post only proves my point!! You guys are un-thinking sycophants…

Trolls? The GOOP? There’s a difference?

  107. Cats r Flyfishn says:

How much did those young men get paid to stand behind less jobs, more wars McCain on Tuesday night? They had painfully bored looks on their faces. Yikes!

  108. flavorino says:

Grandpappy Mc Cain should be planning his retirement, not running for President. His time has passed.
He got effed by Rove and Bush in 2000 and he bent over and said ‘thank you sir , may I have another”
    He’s a dinosaur from a past era.

  109. Jeremy in Denver says:

  110. Shayne says:

So Jeremy, are there any after affects to learning to speak like an idiot?

Blurred vision, headaches, shaking hands… that sort of thing?

Comment by The Republic of Stupidity — February 22, 2008 @ 4:01 pm

I bet you’re worried about a loss of appetite!

    McCurmudgeon, what a charmer.

  113. Frosty Cupcake says:

This is a bad thing, that reporters are lacking the happy/chumminess they once enjoyed with McCain?

There has been entirely too much chumminess between reporters and politicians for years now. Good riddance to that, I say.

    Comment by Frosty Cupcake — February 22, 2008 @ 4:53 pm

Absolutely. I. F. Stone figured that out decades ago. And it’s a very good thing for journalists to realize that all of McCain’s chumminess is a facade covering up an arrogant loon.

  115. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Nettles: “But unless Obama magically grows some stones and stops the Kum-Baya with Ahmadinejad and Raul Castro rhetoric, he’s toast.”

Impressive. Nettles must know something every major polling organization hasn’t figured out. Because they’ve all got Obama cruising to a victory over the cranky old warmongering crackpot. Nettles, what’s your secret? I’m sure Gallop, AP, Zogby and Rassmussen would like to know.

  116. tarazan says:

McCain ,talking to jounalists today , looking sad but mad said that he will not discuss his ‘affairs with the lobbyist lady’.
He said that he answered all of the questions yesterday, when he became Mother Teresa for few minutes.
Did he really answered anything..? He said it never happened…never happened…I’m clean . ask my wife…who later lashed at NYTimes, that her husband will not do such thing and dishoner her or his country.
Was his denial a big Mc Lie ?

  117. hellinabucket says:

Nettles has less of a pair than Mr. Foley.

  118. pete says:

I almost feel sorry for our trolls. Almost.

  119. stormkrow says:

I’m perfectly capable of defending myself in Texas with a concealed carry and my “Vote Republican-Kill a Soldier!!” bumper sticker proudly displayed on the back of my truck. It sure is fun commuting in the GOP stronghold of Houston.
Although it is hard to argue with someone when they’re right.

“His own commanding officer could not give W. his annual evaluation because he was NEVER there to BE evaluated.
    From his own service record.”

    Comment by Uncle Ho — February 22, 2008 @ 3:11 pm

That’s because he was always in the air flying to keep this country safe from the Red Threat… atleast until his coke and booze wore off and he was no longer high just hungover. ;)

  121. McWars says:

Yeah, we need an 18th century president with a short fuse. McCain must think he’s meeting the demand.

“U.S. President John McCranky” — it just doesn’t sound right.

  122. Jack Jett says:

His shit is only begining to hit the fan.

It is hard for him to defending cheating on a wife …when the lady standing next to him cheated on her husband while he cheated on his wife.

    McCain is INSANE…in me membrane…

  123. ForTruth says:

    His wife is stoned.

  124. Xisithrus says:

This is why this bellicose man wont make a good president. Its not the media job to kiss his derrier and bow to his anger, hes only making it worse by trying to punish them at the back of the bus.

  125. Pursang says:

McGrumpy is just exhibiting those famous Republican family values. You know the ones like stealing, lying, cheating on your spouse, torture, visiting prostitutes, anonymous gay sex in bathrooms, young boys, and the list goes on and on. Don’t you just love hypocrites?

Wonder how long until we find McCain in a wetsuit whipping a prostitute dressed up like a french maid? At least that would give the Mrs. a reason to go back to popping painkillers like they were Skittles.

  126. flavorino says:

    Grandpa McGrumpy is angry!
Hey you reporters, get off my lawn!

  127. woodguy says:

Thanks for proving my point that the NYT is a joke and bastion of shrinking agenda-”journalism”!

    Comment by JT — February 22, 2008 @ 3:37 pm

They must be a joke, because now Bill “always right but never correct” Kristol is now writing his drivel there on the NYT editorial page.
