Stewart mocks McCain at Oscars.

Stewart mocks McCain at Oscars.»

During his opening monologue as host of tonight’s Academy Awards, Jon Stewart noted that films about the Iraq war were noticeably absent from the nominees. He then poked at Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) suggestion that U.S. troops should stay in Iraq for 100 more years:

STEWART: Not all films did as well as Juno, obviously. The films that were made about the Iraq war — let’s face it — did not do as well. But I am telling you — if we stay the course and keep these movies in the theaters, we can turn this around.

I don’t care if it takes 100 years, withdrawing the Iraq movies would only embolden the audience. We cannot let the audience win.

you’re not funny. why is that?

  3. Above the Clouds Says:

It is kind of tough laughing at the deaths of the soldiers and civilians who died to find out why Dick Cheney’s oil was under all that Iraqi sand. Conservative comedians like O’Reilly, Hannity, DeLay and Limbaugh are much more humorous–in a tragic, Larry Craig kind of way.

Dude, nailed it- that is some funny sh*t and you got your point across as well… well played, sir- well played… There’s only one thing that would make your comment richer and more deserving of praise- if there was any truth to it… Jon Stewart is funny as hell most of the time and he certainly is funny here- or is your point that he isn’t liberal?

  96. Xisithrus Says:

That I find this story so hilarious probably says more about me than the cross-dressing federal judge in question, but as they say these days, it is what it is. The punch line is probably the best part.[Federal Judge Robert] Somma worked in private practice for years in Boston before he was appointed to the bench by President Bush in December 2004. Yes, the fact that Bush appointed him as a federal bankruptcy judge does crack me up, but let’s start at the beginning. Somma’s Mercedes-Benz E320 sedan hit a pick-up truck from behind about 11:29 p.m. on Feb. 6, the police report said. No one was hurt. Somma, who lives in Newbury , Mass. , fumbled in his purse for his driver’s license before handing it to the officer who later arrested him, the police report shows.

“He had a difficult time locating his license in his purse. He passed over it multiple times before removing it,” officer Paul J. Thompson wrote in his report. The officer offered no other details with regard to the judge’s attire or accessories.

Nor would representatives of the Manchester Police Department or the city solicitor’s office, which worked out the negotiated plea agreement with Somma’s lawyer…But lots of other people did offer those details, of which Audrey Hepburn would have been proud.

When authorities removed him from the vehicle, they said he wore a black women’s cocktail dress, fishnet stockings and high heels. But in his mug shot, the judge appears to be wearing blue eye shadow. Way to wreck a really chic look, Robert.

And where, you might ask, was the judge going that night dressed that way?

Somma told police he had been at the Breezeway Pub where he had one gin and tonic about two hours earlier, the police report reveals. He later said he drank two gin and tonics.

The Breezeway Pub, at 14 Pearl St. , bills itself as “ New Hampshire ’s favorite gay and alternative bar,” according to its web site.

Whenever anyone mentions Dennis Miller I will forever remember his failed stint on MNF. At the time I kinda felt sorry for him because he seemed to try so hard to be funny, but he wasn’t. Sorta reminds me of my uncle who tries to be funny with everything he says, but likewise almost always isn’t.

If you’re a Muslim, you’re not a very good one. A real Muslim would know that neither Progressives nor Muslims are struggling against Christians. We’re just struggling against bigots.

Now it’s true that Progressives want to help Muslim-Americans with their daily struggles: making a living wage, having clean air to breathe, having clean water to drink, having safe and well-maintained public infrastructure, having a social safety net for desperate times, and having a guaranteed right of free expression and worship. We fight for these same struggles on behalf of Hindu-Americans and Christian-Americans and Atheist-Americans and Bokononist-Americans.

I never heard of such thing as ‘Liberal comedian’ or ‘Conservative Comedian’…
I know one thing and that ’s called a ‘Comedian’.

Can you name a Conservative comedian?!!

You must be living a hard life trying to divide everything to liberal and conservative..
    Life is not that way…

    Relax.

Oh geez — lighten up. Yes, Jon Stewart took a dig at McCain’s age and some of the absurd rhetoric we’ve been shoveled by our leaders on the Iraq situation. He also took a swing at the Clintons.

Jon Stewart is a comedian who hosts a fake news show. Which, by the way, is very funny. AND it skewers everybody who deserves it — conservatives, progressives, liberals, Republicans, and Democrats. You may perceive conservatives being the butt of jokes a bit more often, but only because they provide the comedy industry with more ridiculous material.

If the conservatives feel that progressives aren’t being made fun of often enough, they can put on their own show. Oh wait — they did. Whatever happened to the “Half Hour News Hour”?

But that’d seriously cut into their dividends from Viacom, GE, Sony, and others.

And it would leave them with just Chuck Norris movies and Faith Hill CDs.

    37. “Taxi to the Dark Side” won best feature length documentary. There was a thread about this film on TP the other day. It beat out “Sicko”. Also there were several documentary shorts and two other feature documentaries that were about the Iraq war. Apparently nobody told Jon Stewart.

Technical correction: Taxi to the Dark Side is not about the Iraq invasion and occupation. It’s about torture in Afghanistan.

2nd technical correction: Also, Jon Stewart’s joke was about how well films were doing with audiences, aka ticket receipts, not how well they were doing with awards. The movie Juno did very well with audiences/profits, but all the Iraq movies out there did not have large audiences/profits.

I didn’t say this film was about Iraq. I said that to of the other nominees were about Iraq. And I pointed that out because Stewart made a joke that there were no films on Iraq which was just a joke.

That could be because documentaries don’t have wide distribution if any. Anything else you’d like to argue about.
    Budget: $1M (estimated)
    Opening Wknd: $13.7K (USA)
    Gross: $91.9K (USA) more »
    Genre: Documentary / more »
Awards: Won Oscar. Another 6 wins & 1 nomination more.
Summary: An in-depth look at the torture practices of the United States in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, focusing on an innocent taxi driver in Afghanistan who was tortured and killed in 2002.

I suspect you can count on further distribution of this film and an increase in gross sales.

I can’t follow your last sentence here, “And I pointed that out because Stewart made a joke that there were no films on Iraq which was just a joke.” Huh?

And if your point was only about the two other films, why did you say anything about “Taxi to the Dark Side?”
