In a townhall meeting today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was asked about the status of the situation in Iraq. McCain, who notoriously said last month that U.S. troops could be in Iraq for another 10,000 years, said “the war will soon be over“:
That reminds me this 100 year thing. I was asked in a town hall meeting back in Florida, how long would we have a presence in Iraq?
My friends, the war will be over soon, the war for all intents and purposes although the insurgency will go on for years and years and years. But it will be handled by the Iraqis, not by us, and then we decide what kind of security arrangement we want to have with the Iraqis.
Listen to it:
For years, McCain has misjudged the length of conflict in Iraq, repeatedly telling the American public that the war will be over soon. Some lowlights:
I think the victory will be rapid, within about three weeks. [MSNBC, 1/28/03]
It’s clear that the end is very much in sight. … It won’t be long. It, it’ll be a fairly short period of time. [ABC, 4/9/03]
We’re either going to lose this thing or win this thing within the next several months. [Meet The Press, 11/12/06]
Although McCain says “the war will be over soon,” he still wants to keep U.S. troops in Iraq for hundreds of years, even acknowledging that the Iraq insurgency will simultaneously “go on for years and years and years.”
To recap, here’s what McCain said in January about the length of an Iraq occupation: “one hundred years, one thousand years, ten thousand years or until the earth collapses under global climate change.”
100 years is soon?

You’d have to be Bill Kristol to throw around more empty rhetoric than McMaverick does.
Does he really think no one’s going to hold him to his word during a Presidential campaign?? I think he really is naive about it, because he’s never in all his ambitious, grasping days, gotten this far. It’s all alien turf for him from here on in, and he’s obviously thinking that his seniority exempts him serious scrutiny. tee-hee, little maverick – you’re in for quite an education…
February 25th, 2008 at 3:09 pmThis is not a war, this is an invasion, and the GOP plans to celebrate the “soon” ending of this war at their “Earth is 6,100 Years Old” birthday party.

February 25th, 2008 at 3:09 pmone might purse one’s lips outward, moistening them with your favorite substance, use one’s index finger, either hand, move so that the finger comes in contact with both lips and move vertically until a sound occurs that will drown out the person speaking. good only for children’s amusement and bloodsucker’s speaking.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:15 pmIs that “soon” as in the near future? You know, the definition of soon?
February 25th, 2008 at 3:16 pmSoon must mean before McCan’t croaks.

February 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pmGeorge said “As the Iraqis stand up, we will stand down.”
McCain says “As the Iraqis stand up, we will stick around.”
February 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pmThe “war” will be over soon, but the “occupation” will continue indefinitely. Sure the occupation may involve the same number of troops as are in the war and sure the fighting may continue at the same high level it is now, but the label will be different so it will be okay. Remember, a lot of people claim the “war” was over when Bush announced “Mission Accomplished” some years ago.
And, of course money or property pledged as a security against a loan is only “collateral” if you can’t pay back the loan. The definition of common words are might slippery when coming from McCain’s lips.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:23 pmMaybe McNasty was having flashbacks to Vietnam, the 10,000-DAY war.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:28 pmif he says “my friends” one more time, I’m gonna puke
February 25th, 2008 at 3:29 pmThe war is Europe is over. We still have troops there. We have troops in Korea. But none of them are fighting. So if the fighting stops in Iraq, do we pull the troops?
February 25th, 2008 at 3:29 pmThe war ended effectively once we reached Baghdad and the Iraqi army put down their arms and abandoned the field. That was about a month after the invasion. So the war is OVER. The occupation, however, has been an abject failure. Just how do you “win” an occupation? Strengthening Iran by installing a Shite-dominated government? Arming and training Sunni tribesmen who are temporarily on our side, until they pick the time to destroy the Shite government? Allowing Afghanistan to increasingly devolve to the level that both the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are stronger than ever and having a greater impact in Pakistan? If the Taliban gain a foothold in Iraq, you can expect Iran to come to the defense of the Shite population there. And that will bring in the Sauds probably. This will eventually happen and will happen whether or not we are there. The U.S. opened Pandora’s box when we invaded Iraq, illegally and without cause, and the result is that we, the rest of the region, and perhaps the entire world, will have to deal with the monsters that we created.

Living in the past is what you morons do, so you can avoid the present and its problems, which you rightards have created by being ignorant, racist, fearful cowards. We are now the leading creators of tyranny and poverty, a mass-murdering tribe of capitalist greedmongers, a bloodthirsty nation of rightwing savages, without any redeeming human qualities, thanks to rightwing, fascist pukes and their mindless followers.

Kind of like how we appeased Saddam as long as it was convenient for us? Or how about all the other “dictators” we have appeased over the years. I guess it’s OK to appease a dictator if we are getting something in return, but not OK to appease a dictator if we are not getting something in return. Perhaps one our our uber intelligent trolls can answer than question.

If the troll who is Francine truly believes this clap trap, it is beyond help. It sees the world from it’s own little bubble. It needs to get out more and talk to real people who are working their a$$es off just to put food on the table and gasoline in their car. Why aren’t they getting rich? What about the people who are working two jobs to make up the salary of the one job they lost because it went over seas? Why aren’t they getting rich. They are working doubly hard. I also love the “quality of living unparalleled in the history of mankind”. As your neighbor down the street how he fells about that as his house is being repossessed.

Under Georgie Boy, things ARE turning to shit, Francine. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, median income in the U.S. peaked in 1999 at $49,224 in constant 2006 dollars. In 2006, median income in the US was $48,201. In other words, the average American household has seen its earning power decline by $1,000 dollars a year under the Boy King. Meanwhile, according to the U.S Commerce Dept., corporate profits rose 21.6 percent in 2006, to a 40-year high.
If you’re a corporate exec or a politician tied into one or more of them, things have been just rosy for you over the past 7 years. For 90% of Americans, however, things ARE turning to shit. If you can’t smell it, you’re likely one of the sources of it…

In post #28, “good-golly” reminds us that “Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat past mistakes”, and serves up “appeasing dictators” as an example.
Actually, “good-golly”, who is playing the part of Neville Chamberlain, and who is playing the Part of Adolf Hitler? Or do you have some other “appeasement scenario” in mind?
In the meantime, here’s another example of what happens when a “president of the United States” (yep, that would be George W. Bush) does not study history… he opens a second front, just like Adolf Hitler, and fails to win on either.
