With Southern Methodist University in Dallas set to house the George W. Bush Presidential Library, the school’s faculty are now criticizing an institute that will be attached to the library. The institute, which will sponsor programs designed to “promote the vision of the president” and “celebrate” Bush’s presidency, will be independent of SMU’s academic governance.
Compounding fears that the institute will trade academic scholarship for partisan praise of Bush, Mark Langdale, president of the Bush library foundation said recently that former Bush senior advisor Karl Rove is advising the project in “an informal capacity.” Langdale called Rove a “critical resource about what happened in the administration”:
“Karl’s pretty busy doing a lot of things in his private life right now, but he’s a critical resource about what happened in the administration, and he has a lot of good ideas about programming and positioning,” said Mr. Langdale, a longtime friend and former neighbor of Mr. Bush.
Just recently, Mr. Langdale said, Mr. Rove e-mailed with suggestions about the size of an auditorium for the library complex.
In the run-up to the formal agreement between SMU and the Bush foundation, critics “suggested making the institute completely separate from SMU or bringing it under SMU’s control.” The final agreement “does neither,” however, because “Bush’s representatives had made clear to SMU” that the library and the institute were “to be a package.”
Faculty at SMU have found the “all or nothing” pill tough to swallow. Even though the university will have at least one representative on the institute’s board, SMU’s representation will be solely chosen by Bush’s foundation.
Dr. Susanne Johnson, an associate professor at SMU, added that the clause “abdicates all power” to the foundation, allows it to “cherry-pick representatives from SMU to fit their ideological purposes,” and “reduces our representation to something that’s meaningless.”
With Rove’s help, the Bush library will be just like the Bush presidency.

Haven’t even read the article yet, still I have the urge to punch both of those jerks right in their sorry faces. Grr!

the related institute “inspired by the principles of George W. Bush’s administration,”
So, in other words, the institute will extol the virtues of warmongering, lying, and bankrupting future generations to come. Good job, SMU!

February 26th, 2008 at 12:10 pmgag…cough….choke….cough….puke.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:12 pmthey both look drunk.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:15 pmWhat I do know, having only read the title, is Rove’s vision of spending more for doughnuts in a day for the library, than Hillary’s campaign in a month.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:15 pmI love it. A $200 million library for a guy who doesn’t read, filled with papers nobody will be allowed to see.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:16 pm$200,000,000 liebrary = Funded by consumer extortion.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:16 pmWith Rove’s help, the Bush library will be just like the Bush presidency.

And a library to boot,I didn`t even know the head CHIMP could read much les lead this country down the road to prosperity.SMU should be ashamed for letting this happen, here is a man who has forgotten he was to uphold the Constitution , he breaks the law because he is president, he has taken FREEDOM to it`s lowest levels . Our founding fathers rolling over in their graves as we speak.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:20 pmThese 2 asshats should be tarred & feathered- at a minimum.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:24 pmAnd SMU, just like Congress, caved to the Bush Fundication demands of take it or leave it.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:24 pmtom; the f stands for f-uckup
February 26th, 2008 at 12:26 pmI wonder how many professors (and students) they will lose by becoming the Regents of TX.
But, hey, money talks and I am sure that Bush paid heavily for is libary (sic). Never misunderestimate (sic) the power of the once might buck.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:28 pmLeno had it right last night..the whole building will be filed with small shiny objects and “a” (1) book on one shelf… which turd blossum is off getting plans drawn up for as we speak…

The whole Bush Administration in miniature. Bush lifts his legacy and pisses to mark his territory.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:29 pm1984, you have arrived!
February 26th, 2008 at 12:29 pmI’d investigate this as any other BushCo transaction, but Nancy would tell me it’s off the table in the name of bipartisanship.

February 26th, 2008 at 12:37 pmWell it certainly would provide anthropologists and psychologists with plenty to study. They could swing by after a visit to the creation science museum in Kentucky.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:37 pmAfter popping out a POS like Rove, I understand why his mother commited suicide.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:37 pmFive days after the dedication of the library, the Democratic Attorney General will subpoena the entire collection.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:42 pmBuild it, by all means.
Langdale called Rove a “critical resource about what happened in the administrationâ€
Why , of course ; the Chimpy presidency has been nothing but a litany of lies and obfuscation , and everyone knows that no one does that like Turd Blossom………

What? No “Terrist” Panic Button? Color coded for different levels of threat.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:49 pmOh, forget the colors, label them for each level of threat:
1. Uh, OH
2. Gawd Dammit
3. Oh, Sh!t!
4. F_ck me!
They are going to have to rely on Karl Rove because he has deleted all the e-mails and shredded any incriminating documents!
February 26th, 2008 at 12:50 pmThis story is breaking just as the Don Seigelman/Jill Simpson story is finally hitting the front page: Karl Rove accused of a multiple felony conspiracy to send an innocent man to prison for 30 years, all in the service of the “Permanent Republican Majority”.
The folks at SMU might want to hold their horses for a little bit, see if a special prosecutor is appointed, make sure that the donors to their Bubble Memorial think-tank don’t wind up indicted, too.
In case you missed a good link for Jill Simpson, and background on what Karl was up to when he wasn’t greasing palms at SMU, check out:

The library will host a right-wing “think tank”, which will employ shameless right-wing propagandists from all over the country to re-write the history of the past eight years, al la Winston Smith. This will become the official record for public consumption, while the original records will be permanently sealed.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pmWell, if it isn’r hungover frat boy and his sidekick, Rove the Slimy!

February 26th, 2008 at 12:57 pmUncanny resemblance by W to Will Ferrell in the pic, eh?
If only he had Will’s sense of humor & talent. Although, he may well have streaked down streets (Old School), in college; he sure as hell never attended National Guard duties, so he had plenty of time on weekends.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:57 pmperhaps what’s happening in alabama will change some minds in texas…
All the publicity that the Don Siegelman case has brought in the last couple of days has made the rats in the Alabama Republican party scurrying to find the safety of darkness again. Led by chief rat Karl Rove, the modus operandi is to deny, deny, deny. The only problem? You have 52 Attorneys General, Republican and Democrat alike, who say that this case just doesn’t pass the smell test.
The case rests on the testimony of Dana Jill Simpson who has come forward to say that Karl Rove asked her to dig up compromising sexual photographs of Siegelman. Classy guy, that Turdblossom.

February 26th, 2008 at 1:12 pmRove is a malevolent lying cheat whose use of the Gay community as a stepping stone to power, to name but one of his conniving actions, speaks to his Freudian relationship with his gay stepfather. Perhaps this indicates he was too close to his mother?
February 26th, 2008 at 1:15 pmIf anyone ever regarded the corporate media as “liberal” the fact that Rove has been given legitimacy by employment in that media should dispel any doubts about its underlying neo-fascist nature.
That they would give this lying, deceiving, malevolent creature airtime after what was done to a good reporter in Dan Rather is a real indictment of today’s YELLOW journalism.
If you don’t mind tauph…Crapacopia. Tighter. More succinct.
Amazing that a place that would purportedly work to attract the best and brightest would choose the lamest, most unimaginative and incompetent goober of a president to honor with such a facility and to allow that much control.

February 26th, 2008 at 1:21 pmThe George W Bush Presidential Library is now in the planning stages. You’ll want to be the first to make a contribution to this great man’s legacy.
The Library will include:
The Hurricane Katrina Room , which is still under construction.
The Alberto Gonzales Room, where you can’t remember anything.
The Texas Air National Guard Room , where you don’t have to even show up.
The Walter Reed Hospital Room, where they don’t let you in.
The Guantanamo Bay Room, where they don’t let you out.
The Weapons of Mass Destruction Room (which no one has been able to find).
The Iraq War Room. After you complete your first tour, they make you to go
back for a second, third, fourth, and sometimes fifth tour.
The Dick Cheney Room, in the famous undisclosed location, complete with
shooting gallery.
Plans also include: The K-Street Project Gift Shop - where you can buy (or
just steal) an election.
The Airport Men’s Room, where you can meet some of your favorite Republican Senators.
Last, but not least, there will be an entire floor devoted to a 7/8 scale
model of the President’s ego.
To highlight the President’s accomplishments, the museum will have an
electron microscope to help you locate them.
When asked, President Bush said that he didn’t care so much about the

February 26th, 2008 at 1:43 pmWhat’s in it for SMU? Aren’t there smart people there? They are gathering rattlesnakes! These two have comitted more felonies than Al Capone. We have been frauded on a bogus war, spied on without warrant, and watched while Bush authorizes the snatching of people off the street and approves of his CIA flying the snatchees off to who knows where. To name just a few of the felonies. Now Rove is finding a place at SMU. What is wrong with the people who run this university? Have the scales not fallen from their eyes?!

I’m guessing that both will have the same audience.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:12 pmThe take it or leave it “package” — my way or the highway approach to negotiations — how shocking. Can they give SMU the death penalty again for allowing this or is that just limited to sports?

February 26th, 2008 at 3:17 pmThe museum at Dachua has several pictures of Adolph and the boys and all of them have the eyes scratched out by visitors. What do you bet that the biggest expense of Bush’s museum will be the security to minimize vandalism.
I, for one, will gladly pay admission to have a chance to JB Weld a dildo in George’s mouth.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:25 pmKubla Bush
At SMU, did George W.,
A library decree,
Where generations of Texans can,
Learn of their adoptive countryman,
And his presidency.
Not mere millions, but half a billions
To build is what it took.
A library of glass and concrete
Honoring a man with clay feet
Never known to crack a book.
Reading’s not the point, of this new joint;
There is no question of fraud.
Instead are stabled writers,
Those starving blighters,
For George W.’s reign to laud.
Just how to raise, scribes to praise,

February 27th, 2008 at 12:10 amI ran across this site looking for stories related the Bush Library at SMU to see what people are saying. I’m a junior there and I’m not happy at all. Students and faculty in general are pissed and about the stipulations being placed on the “Institute”. I know people are thinking what the hell is wrong with the University? Well here it is from an insiders perspective. In no specific order
1. the school wants to compete on the level of Harvard and other Ivy League schools. It wants to be in the top especially among colleges in the South like UT, Rice etc
2. Money. it talks and everything else walks.
3. Prestige. it wants prestige and to attract the best and the brightest.
Hell we’ve been having a drop in retention at the University. I for one don’t think the Bush Library is going to help but what do I know as a lowly student. Bush by far is the biggest terrorist in the world.
there are some other reason but those are the ones that stand out most. I think the library will only repel students.
regardless of what outsiders say the school’s students and staff are quite liberal. We are Methodist in name only. The church really does not have much to do with the school at all. No not all of us are spoiled rich kids with tons of money. there are so many pretending to be.
I for one worry that my degree will be devalued b/c of this. It’s a stigma to have the Bush name attached to anything.
This question was raised by one student during the press conference and President Turner tells her he hopes she will change he mind later down the road! Great answer Gerald. Most of us are upset by this. The Methodist Church was highly against the library b/c of Bush’s torture tactics.
I think the library would best fit at Baylor than SMU.

February 27th, 2008 at 9:12 amThey misspelled Library, to more accurately reflect the George W. Bush misadministration the spelling will be Liebrary. “My Pet Goat” will be the only document not redacted. There will be absolutely no copies of the U. S. Constitution allowed in the Liebrary. I’m sure most people connected with SMU are totally ashamed to have the Liebrary located there, perhaps they can stage a mass protest before it becomes a “done deal”! If all faculty threatened to quit I believe that would resolve the issue. Seems like Brigham Young U. or Bob Jones U. would be much more appropriate.
March 8th, 2008 at 10:43 amI’m sure Yale wouldn’t have it.
I really doubt that the administration at SMU has seriously considered the security woes the George W. Bush Liebrary will cause. The problems surely aren’t worth the very high risk that they will taking no matter how much they’re getting paid. The Liebrary will certainly be a focal point & target for protest demonstrations from all kinds of groups, Iraq War protesters, Katrina victims, Valerie Plame fiasco protesters, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld & Karl Rove haters, just to name a few. Since “Sonny” Bush won’t be Prez, & I doubt John McCain will be either, he can’t get Secret Service to enforce so-called “Free Speech” zones miles away. That’s not even to mention foreign dissidents. It appears to me that the majority of the faculty & students are greatly opposed to it & very rightly so!!! If I had a kid as student there I’d be greatly concerned about safety. After all who wants to host a memorial to the worst President ever???!!!
