Broder finally repudiates Bush ‘comeback’ column.

Last February, Washington Post columnist David Broder wrote a column arguing that President Bush was “poised for a political comeback.” Over the past year, he repeatedly defended his claim, but in an online chat today, Broder finally repudiated his column, saying “that was certainly one of my less astute observations“:

Long Island, N.Y.: Mr. Broder, thanks for taking time today for this chat. About a year ago you wrote a column where you stated: “It may seem perverse to suggest that, at the very moment the House of Representatives is repudiating his policy in Iraq, President Bush is poised for a political comeback. But don’t be astonished if that is the case.” I think it’s safe to say that this comeback has yet to materialize. In your opinion, what has transpired over the last 12-plus months where Bush has failed to capitalize on any opportunity to garner any significant increase in support outside his high-20 percent core backers?

David S. Broder: That was certainly one of my less astute observations. He has been less flexible in the past year than I expected after the 2006 election, and I think he continues to pay a price for his rigidity. On the S-CHIP program, for one example.

    No comeback.
Just a go away, Mr. Bush, go away, and no more decisions before 1/20/09, thank you.

    - – Or as Rove would characterize Bush, “His Lincoln-like, Reaganesque, Churchillianism.

One of his less astute observations, to be sure, but at the time it did serve its purpose: kept Broder’s access to White House sources quick and easy.

    – - Broder has Bush confused with Mark Foley.

    sign on broder’s desk:

ass. you either kick it or lick it.

Bush isn’t rigid. Simply, he has the Cheney’s hand up his butt, and can’t bend. But Bush himself is soft as a hand puppet.

Broder; it’s a huge shit pie, and now you are going to have to take a bite.

Too bad Mr. Broder won’t be around in 50 years to see how well history rates Bush.

He is now at 19% approval……

    Yes, really.

    Come back accomplished, America!

Shouldn’t the question be “outside his 19% Deaf, Dumb and Blind Neo-Conservative Monkeys?”

    Huh. “Less astute”…?

I’d call that the understatement of the year.

Broder is a slow learner. Very, very slow.

Long Island, NY is asking some pretty hard hitting questions for an island.

I grew up there and the only time it spoke to me was back in college when I was on shrooms.

  16. 5th Estate says:

    Let’s try that again:

LONG ISLAND, NY: Mr Broder, a year ago you expressed one of many opinions that have proved unsurpisingly worthless. What is your worthless opinion now”

BRODER: ” He [Bush] has been less flexible in the past year than I expected after the 2006 election..”

LI, NY: So you expected Mr Bush who, even when he appeared to compromise on any given issue would simply apply a signing to obviateeven the most faintly bipartisan legislation or significantly underfund such legislation, or block any inquiry into or discussion of White House policy with threats and claims of unitary executive power for 6 years, to suddenly implicitly acknowledge policy mistakes by changing his behavior despite having everything to lose if he did so?
You expected Mr “I don’t pay attention to polls and focus groups” to suddenly pay attention?

The only thing more stupid than your earlier claim and your current response is that fact that I’m still asking for yet another of your worhtless opinions. Shame on me!.

That was certainly one of my less astute observations.

No. This observation was about as astute as all your others, i.e., not so much.

I would have liked to hear Broder’s voice when he said this. I personally doubt the sincerity of the “apology”. And why did it take him a year to admit that his boy, his king, his lord Bush is not going to make a comeback? Maybe all the evidence was too liberal.
