A new ABC News Consumer Comfort Index “stands at -37 on its scale of +100 to -100, steady for three weeks at its lowest since November 1993. One reason for concern is that “the index this week is -8 among people with household incomes over $100,000, a new low in three years of tracking that income group and only the second time it’s been in the negative zone.”

I wish we could go back to the Clinton years.
sigh…….
February 27th, 2008 at 1:06 pmBut we will not back down.

I give the trolls six minutes before one of them shows up doing his best Kevin Bacon Animal House impression:
“All is well! Remain calm! All is well!”
February 27th, 2008 at 1:10 pmNot a huge surprise, gas prices are predicted to hit $4.00 a gallon, the overall cost of living is way up. People are losing homes and cars. Lots of worried folks out there right now.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:11 pmDon’t expect any positive action from the WH . . . . they and their pals are making a ton of $$$, so the plan to financially screw 99% of Americans is working out just dandy.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:12 pmJust remember,
“When the going gets tough, the rich go shopping.”
February 27th, 2008 at 1:14 pmBah! #I$U#*($*(@)$E(&% Consumers! F*(K them! What do they know!
February 27th, 2008 at 1:19 pm(looks at watch)
Hmmm… trolls are late showing up to this thread… I guess they got caught up defending hate radio.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:22 pmButttt…it was worse when clinton was president……
February 27th, 2008 at 1:22 pmThe economy is fundamentally sound for the ultra rich.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:23 pmI’ll play troll: see post 7
or, Barak Obama’a middle name is hussien.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:24 pmor, the surge is working.
or, it all the mexicans’ fault.
Bobwurst, we appreciate your willingness to step in and pick up the trolls’ slack, but it’s clear your heart just isn’t in it.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:25 pmGo shopping teenie airheads, soccer moms, chattie cathies, then block out librul tv and watch the confidence surge. Next time vote for being at ease with poverty. That’s where real confidence rests.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:30 pmJust a matter of minutes until they blame the Democrats
February 27th, 2008 at 1:31 pmWell, at least we know why JMHendler hasn’t been posting:
Millions of Floridians Lose Electricity After Failure (Update6)
February 27th, 2008 at 1:31 pmFolks, we have not seen the bottom of this. More information is being hidden from us, than is being given to us. Who to believe? Please get your financial affairs in order; and if you are approaching mid-late forties and older, take a very good review of your retirement options.
The Bush administration is taking a scorched earth approach to our economy. Bush is so pissed that nobody likes him, he is actively trying to make life unbearable for the next administration.
For you religious fundies out there, bush is the anti-christ. Just thought you should know.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:33 pmI’m surprised it held at -37, and don’t think it will get any better anytime soon. Most everyone I know is developing a strong “hunker in the bunker “attitude about the economy and their lives.
Oh, and those $600+ “economic stimulus” checks coming out in May? Haven’t yet heard anyone say they are going to use more than $100 or so to go out and “stimulate” with. They are either going to pay on the VISA card or into the bank.
Wow. Recession, job losses, inflation, home foreclosures, perpetual war, government corruption, invasion of privacy, telephone wiretapping and spying on citizens, Supreme Court reduction of civil liberties and individual rights, obscene corporate profits, loss of affordable health care, lying and flip-flopping politicians, spiraling deficit, imperial presidency, spineless Congress.
Nope – not a third world banana republic, but USA circa 2008. I don’t think these are going to be referred to as “the good old days.”

Don’t worry about the war. Want to go stimulus shopping?
February 27th, 2008 at 1:40 pmHeckuva job, Georgie!!
“Mission Accomplished” indeed…
February 27th, 2008 at 1:45 pmThe economy will be all better as soon as we all get those $600 checks. Well it will be better for the Chinese and the super wealthy top 1% who get the profits from all that cheap labor and pay not taxes. God freakin’ bless Dumberica.

Last night I was enjoying a little retroactive radio and a song came on from the Lords of the New Church called “Open Your Eyes” and did that ever take me back to the early 80’s!
Check out these 25 yr-old lyrics:
Video games train the kids for war.
February 27th, 2008 at 1:57 pmArmy chic in high-fashion stores.
Law and order’s done their job.
Prisons filled while the rich still rob.
Assassination politics.
Violence rules within’ our nation’s midst.
Well ignorance is their power tool.
You’ll only know what they want you to know.
The television cannot lie.
Controlling media with smokescreen eyes.
Nuclear politicians picture show.
The acting’s lousy but the blind don’t know.
They scare us all with threats of war.
So we forget just how bad things are.
You taste the fear when you’re all alone.
They gonna git’cha when you’re on your own.
The silence of conspiracy.
Slaughtered on the altar of apathy.
You gotta wake up from your sleep.
‘Cause meek inherits earth…six feet deep.
Open your eyes see the lies right in front of ya.
Open your eyes…..
But everything is fine with the economy and we are not in a recession…. Right!
February 27th, 2008 at 2:02 pmCool, thanks mary.
Reagan-era, pop-punk-psychedelia at it’s best.

Noooo.
February 27th, 2008 at 2:38 pmDon’t the R-word.
Its a “mild economic downturn”, not a Recessio…… “R-word”.

As much as things change, lots of things remain the same….
February 27th, 2008 at 3:07 pmBut GiGi is making big bucks (at least $17.50) by “buying low, selling high”, therefore the “R”-word doesn’t exists…
February 27th, 2008 at 3:12 pmTrolls don’t seem to be have any answers about the economy, or they are having a garage sale and can’t get to the computer right now.
February 27th, 2008 at 3:32 pmThe prospect of having a Democrat controlled Congress and Whitehouse does little for my confidence in the economy.
Comment by jdc — February 27, 2008 @ 4:03 pm
How can they possibly do worse than the Republick controlled Congress and “Whitehouse” over the past seven years?
February 27th, 2008 at 4:12 pmWOW!! Lower than after 911?!?!?!
February 27th, 2008 at 4:39 pmThe prospect of having a Democrat controlled Congress and Whitehouse does little for my confidence in the economy.

So you sold everything at your garage sale, Good you may need all the money for gas to get the supermarket this week.
So Sir, what would you do? Keep with the great work of La Bush and his let the children pay concept. I really want to know because on Wednesdays I need some levity.
February 27th, 2008 at 6:05 pm26.”The prospect of having a Democrat controlled Congress and Whitehouse does little for my confidence in the economy.”
Yeah, the economy did so bad from 1993 to 2000. In fact, the market generally does better under a demo than a repub. Just use yahoo finance and graph it out.
