McCain Rated As America’s Worst Senator For Children

mccain3332.JPGToday, the Children’s Defense Fund Action Council released its 2007 Nonpartisan Congressional Scorecard. CDF reports some positive news, particularly that average scores for members of Congress “improved from the previous three years with more Members scoring 100 percent than in 2004, 2005 or 2006.”

Many, however, did not fare so well. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) received a 10 percent rating — the worst in the U.S. Senate.

CDF ranked members on 10 votes affecting children:

1. Increase minimum wage (H.R. 2)
2. Increase funding for children with disabilities (S. Con. Res. 21)
3. Protect children from unsafe medications (S. 1082)
4. 2008 Budget resolution (S. Con. Res. 21)
5. SCHIP Reauthorization (H.R. 976)
6. College Cost Reduction and Access Act (H.R. 2669)
7. SCHIP (H.R. 976 – motion to concur)
8. DREAM Act (S. 2205)
9. Funding child health and education (H.R. 3043)
10. Improving Head Start programs (H.R. 1429)

McCain has missed 57 percent of Senate votes this session, being absent or voting “present” for 8 out of 10 children-related votes. McCain voted “yes” to increase the minimum wage; his only other vote was voting “no” on SCHIP reauthorization on Aug. 2, 2007:

Furthermore, the rankings weren’t divided by party. Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and Gordon Smith (R-OR) received strong 70 percent rankings.

McCain’s CDF score has steadily declined over the years. In 2004, he received a 38 percent; in 2005, 22 percent; in 2006, 10 percent.

So McBush is an equal opportunity screw off. In short, Arizona does not have a functioning Senator. Missing more than half of the issues he was elected to speak to, is simply being derelict in his duty. Yet the people of Arizona will no doubt vote for him in November. Unreal!

  17. natisman says:

I kind of wonder what the former Congressman from Florida Mr. Foley thinks about this problem that McBush has with children. Think he will send him an email.

  42. Tawdry says:

Doesn’t McCain understand that he has to keep children healthy so that he can wage his 10,000 year war?

  43. Roger_Roger says:

What a bs rating. This just asked how much he raised our taxes. Raising taxes for more entitlement programs hurts children because the government would be stealing more money from their parents means less money for their children. I fully support McCain on this issue. I am glad he hasn’t stolen more American tax payer money for more entitlement programs. In a day and age when we have a deficit, you would think both parties would be coming together to reduce and remove most all entitlement programs until we get the budget correct.

  44. fltnsplr says:

Regardless of anybody’s rating, McCain doesn’t deserve to be elected President in any country I can think of. He was broken in prison, and

  45. fltnsplr says:

though he undoubtedly suffered enough for one lifetime, that in itself doesn’t qualify him for the highest office in the land.

I do not believe he has enough integrity to run this country successfully, though unfortunately he’s good enough for the Republicans. Faith of his fathers, indeed!

  46. Democrat Soldier says:

#43 – “In a day and age when we have a deficit, you would think both parties would be coming together to reduce and remove most all entitlement programs until we get the budget correct.” Comment by Roger_Roger — February 28, 2008 @ 9:20 am

You’d think they’d also consider ALL programs, not just the entitlement ones that help low/no-income people.

Why are we paying billions for military contractors that are not doing the work for which they are hired?

Oh, I forget. Pres. Bush has to line the pockets of the people who got him “selected” in 2000.

  47. Rick33 says:

McCain hates children, fits right in with the other Repugs and “religious right”. Bunch of hypocrites trying to stop abortion when they’re the worst womanizers and if you make abortion illegal you don’t stop it you cause more desperate women to die. It’s easy to not care about children because they don’t vote but if they could they wouldn’t want McCain that’s for sure. Bet he tortured his own children with cattle prods and plumbing pipes.

  48. WaterMan says:

Saint McCain IS the WORST for America – period.

  49. Roger_Roger says:

#46 Maybe suprising, but I agree with you. Along with eliminating most all the entitlement programs, we need to stop any increase in military spending. While we certainly need a military, we already outspend everyone on military spending. We do not need to continue to raise this amount. It needs to stay steady or even shrink.

So we agree that military spending should decline and entitlement spending should decline. I am glad we agree.

  50. pfl says:

As someone from Arizona, watching McCain loose the election this fall will cause mixed emotions. On one hand we will not have to put up with him as president but on the other we will won’t be able to get rid of him as US senator.

  51. grumpie38 says:

I agree with pfl. As an Arizonan I almost feel embarassed to be represented by two of the worst senators–John McCain, and Jon Kyle, and to top it off my concilman is John Shadegg, (another Bush rubber stamp.)

  52. PollM says:

The Best News so far today, but not being reported sufficiently.

The question has nagged at the parents of Americans born outside the continental United States for generations: Dare their children aspire to grow up and become president? In the case of Senator John McCain of Arizona, the issue is becoming more than a matter of parental daydreaming.

Given that McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, does that disqualify him from being President?

  53. judyinnm says:

    Gotta appeal to that base.

Besides, kids can’t vote; and his constituents are affluent senior citizens (like him), who don’t want taxes spent on other people’s kids.

  54. judyinnm says:

Rick – I hadn’t heard McCain tortured his kids with cattle prods and plumbing pipes. Did you hear that on CNN? (Do you think they’d report on that “rumor”, if it got spread around, a bit?)

    Something to think about….

  55. sicnarfe says:

He looks exactly like something evil–which he is. Seems like the ‘cons always have that “been with Satan” look about them. If he becomes president, I’m predicting the total collapse of our nation. For one thing the entire world will start closing us out of everything, since they would have observed that we go from worse to irredeemable. Secondly, they’ll total our economy. And I think that if he were to provoke military engagement with Iran, as he’s intimated, we’ll have the conflagration that’ll destroy life on this planet, since I believe the rest of humanity will not stand idly by whilst we pillage and destroy another nation that is no threat to us.

  56. R071001 says:

Kyl and McCain are my senators and I watch their votes carefully.
It’s true that McCain has missed most of the votes since he has been campaigning for president. However, he made it a priority to vote for retro-immunity for the Telecommunications who broke the FISA law and spied on us (AT&T and Verizon come to mind). Lobbyist, Vicki Iseman (Telecommunications Lobbyist), had connections with McCain beginning 8 (eight) years ago and she apparently still does.

I never said “eliminate most all entitlement programs”, I said we should have across-the-board spending cuts.

Why do you insist upon spinning others posts?

  58. cokids says:

Why does McCain’s health never get investigated? Surely his stand or absence on issues related to children is important, but his health should also be an issue. His VP choice is absolutely as important as his candidacy as we will probably end up with the VP as Pres by the end of a McCain administration! He has had melanoma, after all!

  59. cokids says:

#54, Do you not see the collapse of this country/big government as part of the plan? Didn’t they pledge this right up front? (’Drown the baby in the bathwater’)

If they bankrupt the country, all the programs they hate will have to go away! Isn’t THAT the point?

(Hope all you conservatives are ready to bring Mom and Pop home to support them!)

  60. azdem55 says:

I agree with what azwazzy2(#34), pfl(#50) & grumpie38(#51) have said. As a fellow Arizonan I believe that Arizona has the 2 WORST Senators in the United States. The Repubs believe in supporting the unborn but once the babies are out the the womb, they are on their own.(i.e. S-CHIP) If somehow McCain is elected the next President, it will be a continuation of the Bush policies right down the line. This country can’t afford that! I have NEVER voted for McCain, I don’t intend to start now!!
