There are racists in the Rupublican party just as there are in the Democratic party. Among those on the far right, there is more racism. You fail to understand that the majority of Americans aren’t hard right or left. The majority of Americans have voted Republican in the last few elections prior to 2006. Remember the Repub majority that you are acer btp-67em battery, acer btp-55e3 battery so upset about? That same majority of Americans are now moving back to the Dems out of frustration with the Republicans. You see only those who always vote
Repub or Dem. There is a large group of moderate Americans who have voted for both. Mostly those who were driven out of the Democratic party years ago.

I agree with your assessment that a large number of previous Democrattic voters did vote for Reagan. I disagree with your assessment for why they did so. The right-whiners of the time began targeting “liberal” and worked their a$$es off to get people to assume it meant “bad”. They succeeded by lying about what being libeal truly means.

Now, it’s up to liberals to prove that the “conservative values” include:
1 - lying to go to war for oil
2 - power over personal responsibility
3 - screw everyone else as long as they get the money
4 - using wedge-politics to divide the nation
5 - fiscal irresponsibility on a scale that would make the Soviet Union blush in shame

Basically, the truth about conservativism will offset the lies told about liberalism.

Comment by Democrat Soldier — February 28, 2008 @ 6:46 am

Your acknowledgment that previous Dem voters voted for Reagan is unusual here. Do you really think the only reason was that lib views were misrepresented? Do you think it had nothing to do with dissatisfaction with Carter's policies and his failure to do anything about the hostages?
I agree that the greed of Republicans can often have more serious consequences for the country than the greed of Dems since Repubs tend to control industries.
As for your list of conservative values, they fit too many of the Repubs currently in power, but you well know that list is not representative of the average conservative American.

C’mon hate, do some research before you go off on your little tirades. Had you checked out some election results maps, you’d know that the 1952 data don’t explain results since 1980. Otherwise, the nation was half southern rednecks and Repub racist in ’60 but almost all Dem in ’64. The racist majority was back in ’68 and overwhelming in ’72. In ’76, the racists were back to half, but the south all went Dem. Guess the southern rednecks all moved west for that election. In 1980-1988 elections, the whole nation was racist again. In ’92 and ’96, racists are less than half, but some of the southern rednecks were still gone since some of the south voted Dem. Yeah, I guess your last statement was right after all:

"So there you have it TARD, the SOUTHERN REDNECKS and REPUBLICAN RACISM are the ONLY REASON REPUBLICANS WIN PRESIDENCIES!"

That’s precious ralph, Upright Loser writes these long posts and thinks everybody here is going to read anything he has to say.

What’s your middle name UL, Biggest? That would make you the Upright Biggest Loser, wouldn’t it.

Barack Hussein Obama, get used to it. But start saving now because I don’t think you’ll be getting that troll pay much longer.

Comment by Shayne — February 27, 2008 @ 6:24 pm

Actually, you are among the group I would expect not to read a post that is contrary to your views since you've made your mind up and no other thoughts are getting through.
And I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I don't have a problem with President Obama, with or without Hussein. Since McCain is the Repub nominee, that's not an option. There's not much difference between Obama and Clinton and having a black president might help in race relations, so he might be the best choice. ;)

“Of course there are moderates in both parties, and their swings determine the outcomes of elections.”

That was the whole point of my original comment.

Not a very profound concept.

But why demonstrate it with the results of Democratic primaries?

Comment by ralph the wonder llama — February 27, 2008 @ 6:50 pm

Not profound in the least. Just a simple fact that seems to elude ROS and others here. No relation to the Dem primary. That came from ROS's insertion of the essay on how race was the deciding factor in Republican wins since Nixon. I agree that had no place here.

“Of course there are moderates in both parties, and their swings determine the outcomes of elections.”

That was the whole point of my original comment.

Not a very profound concept.

But why demonstrate it with the results of Democratic primaries?

Those would be the people that I have been referring to as voting for the candidate, not the party.

yeah,m I figured you would go there. Unfortunately, your argument about moderates has little to nothing to do with the inherent racism in the core of the Republican party. The elections of Reagan and both Bushes were not due solely to racist appeals, and no one said they were. But racist tactics, when used in general elections, invariably are used for the benefit of Republican candidates.

Of course there are moderates in both parties, and their swings determine the outcomes of elections. But wherever racism plays a part in campaigning or election results, it’s a pretty good bet that Republicans are behind it and/or have benefited from it.

I acknowledged that there are racists among the hard right. What's so difficult about that? Do you think I'm somehow defending those people?
I didn't suggest the racism factor in past elections, ROS did.

Do you consider Rove and far right Republicans to be representative of the majority of Americans?

Comment by upright left — February 27, 2008 @ 4:27 pm

No, but they sure are representative of the contemporary Republican Party.

Hence the dramatic shift in voter registrations to the D side.

Is UL distancing himself from the republican party of the last 8 years?

The dirty tricks of Rove is a major reason Bush was elected and now you want to wash yourself clean of this. It’s going to take a lot of soap.

A lot.

Comment by hellinabucket — February 27, 2008 @ 4:47 pm

I had nothing to do with Rove's tricks. Do you take responsibility for every Democratic scandal because you are a Democrat? If a policy that I support fails, I accept responsibility for that support. I don't accept responsibility for the actions of others that I have not supported.
