FLASHBACK: In 2000, Bush Criticized McCain For Lobbying On Behalf Of Campaign Contributor»

bmconfetti3.jpg Last week, the White House weighed into the New York Times’s story on Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) ethics troubles and firmly sided with the senator. White House deputy press secretary Scott Stanzel told reporters:

[S]eemingly on maybe a monthly basis leading up to the convention and maybe a weekly basis after that, the New York Times does try to drop a bombshell on the Republican nominee.

And that is something that the Republican nominee has faced in the past and probably will face in this campaign. … And sometimes they make incredible leaps to try to drop those bombshells on the Republican nominee.

The New York Times’s revelations that McCain lobbied the FCC on behalf of a contributor shouldn’t have been that much of a “bombshell” to Bush. During the 2000 elections, McCain also faced scrutiny on this issue. In fact, at that time, Bush was sharply critical of McCain’s conflict of interest:

“I think it’s really important for people who advocate reforms to live to the spirit of the reforms they advocate.” [Washington Post, 1/6/00]

“I think somebody who makes campaign finance an issue has got to be consistent, and walk the walk.” [New York Times, 1/6/00]

“It’s important on campaign funding reform that we have campaign funding reform. But it’s also important for people to know that my friend is raising money from people who have business in front of his committee. Nothing illegal about that, but I just want to make sure the facts are laid bare.” [CNN, 2/4/00]

“The reality is he is the person who has been the Washington insider.” [ABC News, 2/4/00]

“What I need to do is make it clear and not let Senator McCain get away with this Washington double-talk.” [ABC News, 2/4/00]

Obama is going to make white milk toast out of this Cain.

  2. McWars Says:

The picture gets better. Zoom onto Georgie’s neck and you’ll find the hickie.

  3. bilbobaggins Says:

Are these people ever going to recognize what hypocrites they are?

I am glad that the American public is now recognizing their hypocracy. That is a large part of why the GOP is going down in flames.

  4. McWars Says:

I couldn’t say this enough: I hate it when Botch speaks, I hate it when he is quoted, and I hate that he kills innocent people.

  5. RUCerious Says:

McWars ~ another coffee stained keyboard to dry out!

  6. JosephW Says:

Quite obviously, it’s a case of Bush being against McCain before he was for McCain.

  7. tarazan Says:

That was then.. but now it is all hugging, birthday cakes, praise , and kisses by Bush & Co.

McCain will not beat Obama on economical issues, racial issues, and many other issues.
McCain is attempting to use ‘Iraq as a successful war’ as his issue..which he will fail to prove..and that will be the end of the old senator’s dreams to be the next president.
He will join Bob Dole & Co. by the end of this year.

  8. RUCerious Says:

    ATTENTION! FISH ON DECK!

  9. Marie Says:

OT, but an important issue for equality:
Obama pens an open letter to the gay community.

Americablog.com has two excerpts, and links.

Don’t hold your breath for McCain or any republican to do the same.

  10. RUCerious Says:

McCain’s Open letter to gays would be a scarlet H.

  11. Little Freep Goofballs Says:

McCain gets endorsement from America’s favorite vote suppressor-

    Ken Blackwell

  12. Jackie Says:

First things first McCain has to get Bush to change the words in the US Constitution. Only a Natural born US Citizen can be a US President. Now all the talk about Hillary/Obama History making well McCain has one better. As McCain wasn’t born on US soil he will be the first President not a natural born citizen. Look for Putin to take the citizenship test and run for President under the new rules. California Governor Arnie could get the spot but first he has to learn how to speak English but then again Bush doesn’t speak English and his Father paid for his College Degree so who knows.

  13. Buckie Boy Says:

    Where’s McInsane’s other hand?

    Groping GW’s butt maybe?

GW looks like he is enjoying it.

If he puts it a little further up there he might find GiGi’s head.

  14. Mr. Evil Says:

Only a sad-sack marshmallow would suck up to Bush after what he did to McCain in the 2000 campaign. McCain is such a whore he’d even blow the town he’s in and offer Larry Craig a job.

  15. singe_101 Says:

    #11

I disagree, this is anecdotal evidence and not a big sample but for GLBT folks who are voting and involved, maybe 25 I’ve met, Hillary is the overwhelming winner on past reputation with Bill and uncertainty on Obama (not that supporting alternative lifestyles would get him great African-American support… sorry, it’s true). If he gets more votes, that further crushes Hillary and they would be more supportive and active later, not just voting D out of obligation.

  16. Xisithrus Says:

McCain was a collaborator in 2000 and now the same people call him a hero.

    Hypocrisy squared.

McCain is a collaborator, McCain has always been a collaborator. [2000]

McCain is a hero. McCain has always been a hero. [2008]

  17. ForTruth Says:

Its all politics. Nothing to see here.

  18. Doc Rock Says:

Left, right, and center–they’re all insiders or they don’t get in the door.

  19. Pursang Says:

Why can our blogs research and come up with these examples of hypocricy and our MSM can’t? Why does the MSM feel they have to give these lying politicians a pass when the evidence is so easily uncovered? Most of all, why does the MSM always seem to give the Republicans the pass while hammering the Democrats?

Maybe the MSM will wake up and finally become journalists instead of entertainment reporters or Republican party shills. I’m not naive though because over time the newspapers and TV stations have been consolidated under just a few individuals/corporations. The truth is controlled now by people who believe in or benefit from the neocon ideology. Until these monopolies are broken up the truth will never come from the MSM.

  20. OxyCon Says:

Bush ran against “Washington insiders”; was totally naive on foreign policy; had a giant sized ego; was very inexperienced; was surrounded by millions of irrational, sycophantic worshipers; used people as props to hold new slogan signs for every event.

Remind you of someone running for office in 2008?

  21. Chocolate Jesus Says:

    >Remind you of someone running for office in 2008.

yes, with the minor caveat that this guy makes sense, has shown good judgement in the past, and doesnt have the shambling, quivering abortion of a track record like heir dumbya. id rather bet on a less experienced guy with good judgement than i would anyone whose made such poor decisions as supporting this groteque waltz toward armageddon the iraq war has become.

  22. tarazan Says:

Talking heads on major telvision networks and newspapers are telling us how experienced McCain is in foreign policy, but when the war in Iraq issue surfaces, McCain does not want to talk about the past, when Obama raised the issue of going to Iraq in the first place, McCain said yesterday:”that was in the past”.
McCain does not want to face his war vote in 2002 supporting invading Iraq.
McCain has no foreign policy experience..he only voted for wars in the Senate.
McCain made few trips to Iraq and came back painting a rosey picture. He has been telling us for so many years that we are winning…now he is telling us that we should stay 100 years in Iraq.
Is this his vision of Iraq, and at what cost?

Surrounding himself with war mongers Neocons like Lieberman,Podhoritz and others , McCain wants to wage more wars in the Middle East, because he believes every foreign policy issues should be solved by starting a military conflict and muscle flexing .
He will put us in more than one military conflict in short period of time if he elected.
The price will be very high to pay, economically and in lives, something McCain might not look at when he pushes the button of another war.

    The G(FL)OP.
