Dobbs challenges Goldman Sachs chairman to a duel.

On his CNN show this week, host Lou Dobbs discussed the new Economy.com report that 8.8 million American homeowners are now “underwater” — meaning they owe more on their homes that the homes are worth. Dobbs then took issue with Goldman Sachs chairman Lloyd Blankfein, who had earlier suggested Dobbs’ prognosis of a worsening economy was false. Dobbs proceeded to challenge Blankfein to tell it to his face:

Perhaps Lloyd would like to come on here and show me the error of my ways and educate me perhaps from his lofty Wall Street perch on how millions of Americans are faring and what their prospects are. Lloyd, you certainly — I would love to have you do it. I would love to have you come on and talk to my face, not to my back, partner. I know it’s not the way you do it on Wall Street there, hot shot, but try it here. Come on down. Open invitation.

Transcript:

DOBBS: A couple of things. About how many homes are now estimated in this country to be under water? That is, people owing more than their homes are worth? And secondly, what percentage of the homes?

ROMANS: According to Moody’s Econony.com, it’s 8.8 million right now, and Goldman Sachs looking out for the rest of the year, it its chief U.S. economist said they’re expect 30 percent, that would be 15 million homeowners.

DOBBS: The Goldman Sachs economists?

ROMANS: Yes.

DOBBS: I wonder if the CEO of Goldman Sachs, Lloyd Blankfein knows the chief economist because this is the same moron who was complaining about the fact apparently, according to Liz Smith that I have a few questions and concerns about this economy and he sees the economy as just fine.

Folks like Lloyd are out of touch. The Lloyd’s of the world are going to have to consider some personal sacrifices to keep the masses from storming their compounds in the years ahead.

I really hope we get through this confrontational BS that it seems that most everyone has in America. It is so couterproductive.

Do you watch and enjoy sports? It is the same thing. You cannot encourage competitiveness without also fostering confrontation. Americans are sports nuts and they love confrontation, so of course it would be reflected in their media and politics. Hell, they’re talking about a National Cowboy Day. And who was more confrontational than a liqoured up cowboy?

Dobbs is usually pretty good, as long as you don’t get him started on immigration.

Just don’t put him on the border with a gun.

  7. Jim says:

While I agree with Lou Dobbs on this issue, his chest-thumping tough-guy act is really nauseating.

  8. ralph the wonder llama says:

Great. Lou Dobbs is channeling Bildo now.

Have you got a quote from Blankfein, what he in fact said? All I can find is a couple of articles that report Blankfein calling out Dobbs as an ass with his anti-immigration vitriole.

OFF TOPIC (but just can’t help it)

Watching Bush right now. He is the most arrogant president ever.

And Michael Abramowitz, White House Reporter softballed Bush with a question dealing with candidates talking about meeting with Iran and Cuba. He misstated Clinton and Obama who both have suggested meeting with the leaders of both countries. They both said they would but WITH CONDITIONS being met. Abramowitz said they would meet “without conditions”, and what did the president have to say about that.

  13. Kay says:

Is this another one the NAZI CHIMPS FAKE NEWS CONFERENCES (see: FEMA).

Sure sign of authoritarian rule: push out more propaganda.

#8 Spot on Wayne. I think Dobbs is at heart a good man. We all have our faults, his is paranoid xenaphobia.

Ultimately regarding immigration, he is right in that something has to be done, but his ‘live in fear of brown people doing lower class work’ act is horribly misfocused.

  16. RUCerious says:

Has Dobbs argued that the war spending is actually the cause of the housing meltdown, or does he blame it on illegal immigration?

  17. Jack Jett says:

It is fun to watch Lou Dobbs rapidly lose his mind on TV.

We refer to his show as Suicide Watch. He is insane as the day is long. So self indulgent with his gathering his followers for his upcoming presidential run.

Why CNN allows him to refer to his viewers as idiots and morons …I will never get… but CNN is a crock of shit anyway.

  18. bilbobaggins says:

Ewwww…. he’s so tough. There was a time when I thought that Lou Dobbs was a good guy. That was when he was pitching a fit about selling our ports to Dubai. But since then, learning how rabidly anti-immigrant he is, he lost my support.

Man….this article will no doubt make for Gobs of Dobbs spittle a-flyin

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/27/AR2008022703747_pf.html

The “Virtual Fence” will not be completed til the end of the next Presidents term. The Feds are just totally incapable of dealing with this situation, apparently. It will have to be the states – like Arizona – passing laws that fine employers who hire illegals that makes the difference.

  20. Mr. Evil says:

I guess we’ll soon be hearing about the CNN security forces not unlike Bill O’Reilly’s at Fox. They’ll soon be surrounding Goldman Sachs.

That’s why I don’t watch sports anymore and politics is doing the same thing to me.

More time on the banjo, I guess.

Lou, meet Zell Miller, Zell, meet Lou Dobbs! Go to it you two old farts!

  23. jpoke42 says:

Dobbs is misunderstood by many. I thank him everyday for his “war on the middle class” theme.

    Go Dobbs, go!

  24. dannydel says:

  28. Oldfart says:

Lou Dobbs has been an ass for some time now. I used to respect him too but the evidence of his sanity is lacking. Anyone who believes in the “NAFTA Superhighway” and the “NAU” and other conspiracy theories and who refuses to admit numerical and statistical errors in the stories he spews and who makes Nixon-like statements like “If we said it, it must be true” ought to be sold to Faux News where he belongs and would have good and appropriate company.

  29. Kay says:

I have come to respect Mr. Dobbs. His constant spotlight on this administration are the war on the middle class etc are important. I wonder if he’s ever spoken to — from the top.

Ever since I saw Bill Moyers, “Buying the War” — and how this country has seen the almost extinct reporter. Nowadays, everyone is a “paid pundit”.

Where are the intrepid reporters (aka “deep throat”) to uncover the crimes committed at 1600 Penn. Ave.?
