Pelosi wants grand jury investigation for Bolton, Miers.

Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) asked Attorney General Michael Mukasey and DC U.S. Attorney Jeff Taylor “for a grand jury investigation into whether White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and former counsel Harriet Miers should be prosecuted for contempt of Congress.” Pelosi is demanding that misdemeanor charges be pursued against Miers and Bolten for their refusal to cooperate in the U.S. attorney scandal. The Gavel has more.

What’s to investigate? They were issued subpoenas, they ignored them.

Seems like pretty clear case of contempt of Congress to me.

  10. RUCerious says:

One mighta thunk felony charges would apply.?

  11. Marie says:

Why does Pelosi have to ask for an investigation into contempt charges? I thought Congress had authority to pursue contempt charges themselves. Is that not so?
Or, is it because the charges must be executed through the DoJ and there in lies the obstacle? If that’s true, then what good is congress having authority?

  12. RUCerious says:

I’m beginning to get a little contemptuous of congress myself. Do SOMETHING to rein these bastards in. NOW.

  15. leftcoast says:

Attorney General Michael Mukasey has already said that the Justice Department would not act on such a referral and convene a grand jury, as required by federal law. That’s because Miers and Bolten didn’t comply with the subpoenas because the President said they couldn’t — it would violate executive privilege.

And good_golly drops a stinking pile with his post from a GOP blog. Like we’ll believe that, after all, the Republican Party and its boot-licking stooges (which good_golly is a proud card-carrying member) have such a good reputation with the truth. Maybe I’ll be impressed if good_golly actually, Oh, I don’t know, cites a worthy source and not, oh, say, ‘gopbloggers.org’?

According to a post here earlier today, the Republicans are actually whining that they’re not getting enough contributions from the telecoms. Because, after all, the Republicans are working hard to keep the telecoms out of trouble.

But that’s different in goonland, because they’re Republicans. When they work hard to support contributors it’s perfectly OK.

  67. Jeremy in Denver says:

Yeah. The Justice Department is the arm of the Executive Branch that brings cases against people on behalf of the Executive Branch, IIRC. The problem here is that the Executive Branch needs to take itself to court.

Funny if you think about it.

And I see that ole good_golly ran out the

defense, again. *smirk* Of course, Clinton never actually avoided testifying before congress, neither did his underlings. He might have lied under oath, or split hairs on words *smirk*, but he answered the subpoenas. Meirs and Bolton have every right to say, “I cannot answer that question.” Granted, they’ll definitely look like they have something to hide, and I guarantee you the next step is that they’ll be taken to court to decide ‘does Executive Privilege apply here’.

However, it’s about ‘beating the Democrats’. They’ll be in this mode for the next, oh, say, 8 years, maybe even more. It’s the same pattern as before.

Yet another reason for leaving this place…to get away from the ‘Gotta beat the other side’ mentality that has infected both sides, but the Conservative side especially…
