In a new book titled The Three Trillion Dollar War, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes argue that President Bush massively understated the cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Combined with interest on debt, future borrowing, cost of continued military presence, and veterans health care, they estimate a potential cost of up to $5 to $7 trillion.
Unwilling to accept what Stiglitz calls a “very conservative” $3 trillion projection, the White House is smearing Stiglitz — President Clinton’s top economic adviser — saying he “lacks courage“:
“People like Joe Stiglitz lack the courage to consider the cost of doing nothing and the cost of failure. One can’t even begin to put a price tag on the cost to this nation of the attacks of 9/11,” said White House spokesman Tony Fratto, conceding that the costs of the war on terrorism are high while questioning the premise of Stiglitz’s research.
In recent interviews, Stiglitz said Bush’s war accounting practices “are so shoddy that they would land any public firm before the Securities and Exchange Commission for engaging in deceptive practices.” “We had to use the Freedom of Information Act to uncover things that we never would have known,” he said.
The White House has a sensitive spot for assessments of the wars’ costs. In October, the CBO conservatively said the wars may cost $2 trillion over the next decade. White House Press Secretary Dana Perino retorted that the CBO’s estimate was “pure speculation” and “wildly premature.” When the Joint Economic Committee said the “hidden” costs of the wars totaled $1.5 trillion, OMB Chairman Jim Nussle derided it as “clearly partisan.”
While the White House says it is “not worried” about the price tag of war, they should be. The war costs are the “hidden cause of the current credit crunch” and housing crisis, Stiglitz’s book argues.
UPDATE: In a hearing with Stiglitz today, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) said he is “tremendously disappointed” in the White House’s attack:
I was also tremendously disappointed to read in the paper today that the White House has disparaged Prof. Stiglitz and the work he has done. It is the height of hypocrisy for an administration that has been so secretive, so unwilling to face the truth and the true costs of their policies and this war to disparage the courage and conviction of someone like Professor Stiglitz.

A new book, TAKEOVER by Charlie Savage explains with facts the careful plotting this administration has done to take our freedoms away. Using the fear tactic which all dictators use along with media lockdown. Which bush used again this morning.
And now it come out bush has political prisoners as well with the Don Siegelman, former Governor of Alabama situation. But bush won’t repair relations with Cuba, “because Raul Castro has political prisoners.”
Bush has brought America to a new low in history.

Try: “One can’t even begin to put a price tag on the cost to this nation of the total incompetence of our leadership since 9/11.” The administration should be thanking Stiglitz for not including the cost to the U.S. of our lost influence.

The list is a long one that shows this adminstration is poor when it comes to estimates. Not a solid foundation to stand on when attempting to cut down anothers information.
February 28th, 2008 at 1:41 pmhmm, rove wrote a book?
Comment by joe cantwell
No, but he sold one. =)
February 28th, 2008 at 1:42 pmGood Golly: It seems pretty clear that doing nothing would cost nothing, and cost of doing something is what Dr Stiglitz provided. Since the Iraq war had nothing to do with 9/11, WMD, al Qaeda, etc, the cost of doing nothing in Iraq would still be nothing. Since the al Qaeda came into Iraq after the invasion, the cost of failure is the same cost, since Iraq is a failure.
Now if we consider Afghanistan, where we were supposed to do something, like capture or kill OBL. The cost of doing nothing would have been what? Oh, yeah, we didn’t capture him, so benefit was nothing, and the cost is????
How about the cost of not doing enough for better homeland security? We need safer borders, better intelligence and better police style work against the al Qaeda that is world wide, not just in Iraq.
February 28th, 2008 at 1:42 pmHey Goo Goo, I didn’t see any disagreement with Stiglitz, only an ad hoc attack on his courage. That is a typical response when one has no valid means of countering criticism. In this case the administration’s public representations that the war in Iraq would be quick, painless and paid for by Iraqi oil revenues makes it pretty much impossible to Stiglitz’ premise. The fact that the Iraq expenditures have been largely “off-budget” provides only the tip of the iceberg in support of the premise that the financial tricks used to hide the cost of the war against almost everything except the terrorists could not pass SEC scrutiny. I recall before the GOP began increasing the national debt beyond all recognition that Republicans used to say the government should be run like a business. I also recall how pretty much every business GW Bush ever tried to run (without an antitrust exemption) went broke. Let’s connect the dots, shall we?
February 28th, 2008 at 1:45 pmCost of doing nothing: a dollar three eighty.
February 28th, 2008 at 1:46 pmWho are you going to believe; some silly Nobel prize-winning professor of economics, or a genuine White House spokesman with … all the… stuff… he …has?

Just a quick refresher course lest we forget what has happened to many friends’ of the Clintons.
1. James McDougal - Clinton’s convicted Whitewater partner died of an apparent heart attack, while in solitary confinement. He was a key witness in Ken Starr’s investigation.

4. Ron Brown - Secretary of Commerce and former DNC Chairman. Reported to have died by impact in a plane crash. A pathologist close to the investigation reported that there was a hole in the top of Brown’s skull resembling a gunshot wound. At the time of his death Brown was being investigated, and spoke publicly of his willingness to cut a deal with prosecutors. The rest of the people on the plane also died. A few days later the air Traffic controller committed suicide.

Ed Willey died on the same day his wife Kathleen Willey claimed Bill Clinton groped her in the oval office in the White House. Ed Willey was involved in several Clinton fund raising events.
8. Jerry Parks -Head of Clinton’s gubernatorial security team in Little Rock. Gunned down in his car at a deserted intersection outside Little Rock. Park’s son said his father was building a dossier on Clinton. He allegedly threatened to reveal this information. After he died the files were mysteriously removed from his house.
9. James Bunch - Died from a gunshot suicide. It was reported that he had a ‘Black Book’ of people which contained names of influential people who visited prostitutes in Texas and Arkansas.
10. James Wilson - Was found dead in May 1993 from an apparent hanging suicide. He was reported to have ties to Whitewater.
11. Kathy Ferguson - Ex-wife of Arkansas Trooper Danny Fergus was found dead in May 1994, in her living room with a gunshot to her head. It was ruled a suicide even though there were several packed suitcases, as if she was going somewhere. Danny Ferguson was a co-defendant along with Bill Clinton in the Paula Jones lawsuit. Kathy Ferguson was a possible corroborating witness for Paula Jones.
12. Bill Shelton - Arkansas State Trooper and fiance of Kathy Ferguson. Critical of the suicide ruling of his fiance he was found dead in June, 1994 of a gunshot wound also ruled a suicide at the grave site of his fiance.

February 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pmI know its true because I read it in Gary Davis’ ‘None dare call it conspiracy’.
Not to mention the maps of Piri Riis!
er, Piri Reis…!
February 28th, 2008 at 3:16 pmDo you truly believe that it is a coincidence that each supporter/advisor for the Clinton’s who attempted to tell about their wrong deeds were killed in the early to mid 90’s.

Do you truly believe a ghost can get a woman pregnant? Of course you do. That explains why you believe everything you read at cnsnews.com
February 28th, 2008 at 3:16 pmThis time the administration has gone too far.
This aggression will not stand.
You DO NOT mess with Joesph Stiglitz.
February 28th, 2008 at 3:21 pmJoseph, even!
February 28th, 2008 at 3:21 pmHow dare the White House disagree with this man. He’s trying to sell a book containing Left Wing talking points. No disagreement allowed.
Comment by good_golly
The moronic troll is once again correct. Truth has a notorious liberal bias. Any book that includes research and truthful statements must be full of “left wing talking points”, because “left wing talking points” are generally provable, quantifiable truths. On the other hand, “right wing talking points” are generally lies, half truths or cherry-picked data.

how come you still alive?
February 28th, 2008 at 3:25 pmAlso - Stiglitz is going to be on Democracy Now tomorrow talking about this. Just FYI.
So suck on that, William Easterly!!!
February 28th, 2008 at 3:30 pm$3 TRILLION dollars spent and no end in sight, we can NOT afford to “win”.
February 28th, 2008 at 3:32 pmFolks, you can’t expect gg to do anything but hit-and-run lying and spinning; that’s what’s in the RNC’s budget after they’ve blown millions losing the ‘06 elections.
Comment by Lefty Patriot
I wonder if the idiot trolls get paid for each post they make or for each post they make and each post thereafter that refer to them? Then, do they get a bonus for, say, 20+ posts per thread?
On the assumption that they get paid per post they make and any post that refers to them, I suggest that we no longer include any reference to the trolls in our replies. Just cut their inane statements and respond to them without the troll dung going along with it. And refer to them as “it” instead of “he or she, him or her”. Maybe if we hit them in their pockets, they will go away and leave us alone!
February 28th, 2008 at 3:58 pmI like regular Daryll’s silly talk much better. What happened?
Comment by dbadass
I do believe that Daryll finally got himself banned and that’s why it is back with this new moniker.

We can not afford to win? So every life that has been lost because of this war means nothing? You should run for president. You sound like a front runner.
Comment by Southern Man — February 28, 2008 @ 4:49 pm
Nice job of ignoring Uncle’s quotation marks, signifying the undefined, amorphous “goal” that is “winning” to Bushbots.
But really, Southern Mammal, we don’t expect anything better from you.
February 28th, 2008 at 4:58 pmWe can not afford to win? So every life that has been lost because of this war means nothing?
Comment by Southern Man — February 28, 2008 @ 4:49 pm
Yes.
Every life lost in this war was lost for nothing. Every life lost in this was was absolutely pointless.
Tragic, eh?
February 28th, 2008 at 5:21 pmWhat does Tony Frottage know about courage?

No, Joe, i can see that. From where Southern Mammal squats, the Truth is probably Far Left. Makes sense to me.
February 28th, 2008 at 6:13 pmNo surprises here…this is par for the course with the Bush administration. On the list of people who’ve publicly criticized them over the past seven-odd years, is there even one person whose reputation they haven’t tried to destroy?
February 28th, 2008 at 7:48 pmComment by Bluestocking — February 28, 2008 @ 7:48 pm
John McCain falls into mind, but, he has changed course since March 2007.
February 28th, 2008 at 9:53 pm” . . . Stiglitz said Bush’s war accounting practices “are so shoddy that they would land any public firm before the Securities and Exchange Commission for engaging in deceptive practices.†“We had to use the Freedom of Information Act to uncover things that we never would have known,†he said. . . .”
Unfortunately, Stiglitz forgot how good a teacher Ken Lay was.
February 28th, 2008 at 10:34 pmOne can’t even begin to put a price tag on the cost to this nation of the attacks of 9/11
February 28th, 2008 at 11:31 pmConsidering the fact that it was an inside job, they should know how much it cost to put that ’show’ together! All that TERMITE was not cheap!
One can’t even begin to put a price tag on the cost to this nation of the attacks of 9/11
February 28th, 2008 at 11:32 pmPlus they should also tell how much is the price tag for having the E-4B plane flying over Washington prior the the missil attack on the Pentagon…
you know… that kind of false flag operation does not come cheap!
February 28th, 2008 at 11:33 pmThey didn’t even payed compensation to the people os Diegao Garcia!!!!
February 28th, 2008 at 11:35 pmI meant: the people of Diego Garcia. They were removed from their island home so the USA could have another military base there. They were transported below deck, in the hold, together with pigs and chikens… That is the US. The democracy promoter!
February 28th, 2008 at 11:38 pmRegarding Nobel Laureates: McCain has said that the Union of Concerned Scientists, which includes more than 40 Nobel Laureates, “is said to be politically motivated.” Sound like a third Bush term?
February 29th, 2008 at 11:33 amSnark off, the White House wasn’t disagreeing with Stiglitz’s estimate of the costs of the war.
They were just calling him cowardly for talking about them.
