Matalin Blames The Media For Americans’ Economic Insecurity

Today on NBC’s Meet the Press, host Tim Russert pointed to a new CNBC poll showing that 83 percent of the American public rates the U.S. economy as only fair/poor. Right-wing strategist Mary Matalin tried to brush off that number, stating that most Americans are nevertheless happy about their personal finances.

When liberal strategist Bob Shrum pointed out that her statement is false, Matalin switched to the well-worn tactic of blaming the media for the problem:

MATALIN: Well, there’s an element of cognitive dissonance there, because if you ask them how their own personal finances are going, those numbers completely switch. Yes — he’s looking around. Those numbers are completely true. They absolutely switch on their own personal finances.

SHRUM: I think most people are getting very insecure about their personal finances.

MATALIN: That’s because they’re berated with these numbers.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/matalinecon.320.240.flv]

Matalin is echoing a popular right-wing talking point. On Feb. 11, former White House adviser Karl Rove claimed that the “media has been beating the drum for years and years and years that the economy stinks. And after a while, that begins to color people’s attitudes.” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) also recently tried to blame it all on the American people by saying that it’s just “psychological.”

Matalin’s baseless assertion was quickly rebutted by her husband, liberal strategist James Carville:

This is not something created by the media. These mortgages, these high energy costs, these pathetic employment numbers, the health care costs, food costs — they’re just killing people out there. They’re not just being told that things are terrible. They’re feeling this every day.

As Shrum pointed out, most Americans are insecure about their own finances. A recent Pew poll found that 53 percent rate their personal finances as only fair/poor, up from 49 percent in January. Additionally, 58 percent believe that their personal income is “falling behind” compared to their cost of living, up from 44 percent in January.

Transcript:

RUSSERT: Let me ask you about the economy, Mary Matalin. CNBC has a new poll coming out tomorrow — Wealth in America. They ask one question — the current state of the economy. Excellent or good, 16 [percent]. Fair or poor, 83.

In an election where the economy is central to people. And the Republicans are actually asking for a third term in the White House. What do those numbers mean to you?

MATALIN: Well, there’s an element of cognitive dissonance there, because if you ask them how their own personal finances are going, those numbers completely switch. Yes — he’s looking around. Those numbers are completely true. They absolutely switch on their own personal finances.

SHRUM: I think most people are getting very insecure about their personal finances.

MATALIN: That’s because they’re berated with these numbers. However, we haven’t had the contrast yet. People do not want, as a furtherance of economic policy, the kind of centralization Obama and Hillary are proposing, they don’t want more regulations, they don’t want higher taxes, they don’t want less trade. Maybe there’s a way to help the transition in Ohio and Pennsylvania, those manufacturing states.

But when you start contrasting liberal liberal liberal — redistributionist policies with limited government policies — the limited government conservative policies, economics win every time.

RUSSERT: Is it the economy, stupid?

CARVILLE: Of course it is, and people are feeling it. This is not something created by the media. These mortgages, these high energy costs, these pathetic employment numbers, the health care costs, food costs — they’re just killing people out there. They’re not just being told that things are terrible. They’re feeling this every day.

i get confused these days. republicans are so inconsistent?

how is it that a female republican can be:

    a) employed
    b) outside of the house and not at her children’s school or shopping
    c) expressing an opinion

it would be so much easier if these people would actually stick to their script.

  4. JustJohn says:

Unbelievable, if anything, the media has done just the opposite by not reporting the TRUE state of the economy…
And what was all that ‘Are we in a recesssion’ garbage?

Now I am confused, I thiought eight years of Republican approval and spending got us to this state. But now I find they are all wrong, it really was the media.

Conservatives can no longer make the case that they believe in “limited government,” nor object to “redistibutionist” policies, after eight years of rubberstamping every big Bush government expansion that came down the pike, so good luck convincing voters you deserve another term at the helm, after showing them out out of touch you guys really are.

MATALIN: That’s because they’re berated with these numbers.

No Ms. Matlin, that’s because at the end of the month many Americans find that more money went out than came in. This has to do with the fact that they haven’t had a raise in three years and the cost of gasoline and consumer goods has risen dramatically.

The right wing and McWalkingCane will be crushed in the November elections and the mainstream media may decide to be more open to liberal (gasp) and progressive (gasp, gasp) viewpoints…

Sept. 18, 2000– “A tax cut is really one of the anecdotes to coming out of an economic illness.” –George W. Bush, The Edge wth Paula Zahn.

December 5, 2000— “Dick Cheney and I do not want this nation to be in a recession. We want anybody who can find work to be able to find work.” –George W. Bush, 60 minutes II, CBS.

“I’m confident we can work with Congress to come up with an economic stimulus package that will send a clear signal to the risk takers and capital formators of our country.” —George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Sept. 17, 2001

Feb. 24, 2001—”My plan reduces the national debt, and fast. So fast, in fact, that economists worry that we’re going to run out of debt to retire.” —George W. Bush, radio address.

Oct. 4, 2001—”We need to counter the shockwave of the evildoer by having individual rate cuts accelerated and by thinking about tax rebates.” —George W. Bush, Washington, D.C.

Sept. 23, 2002—”We need an energy bill that encourages consumption.” —George W. Bush, Trenton, N.J.

Oct. 4, 2002—”Let me tell you my thoughts about tax relief. When your economy is kind of ooching along, it’s important to let people have more of their own money.” —George W. Bush, Boston.

Dec. 15, 2003—”See, without the tax relief package, there would have been a deficit, but there wouldn’t have been the commiserate — not ‘commiserate’ — the kick to our economy that occurred as a result of the tax relief.” —George W. Bush, Washington, D.C.

Feb. 9, 2004—”The march to war affected the people’s confidence. It’s hard to make investment. See, if you’re a small business owner or a large business owner and you’re thinking about investing, you’ve got to be optimistic when you invest. Except when you’re marching to war, it’s not a very optimistic thought, is it? In other words, it’s the opposite of optimistic when you’re thinking you’re going to war.” –George W. Bush, Springfield, Mo.

Feb. 19, 2004—”Recession means that people’s incomes, at the employer level, are going down, basically, relative to costs, people are getting laid off.” –George W. Bush, Washington, D.C.

Feb. 8, 2004—”The recession started upon my arrival. It could have been — some say February, some say March, some speculate maybe earlier it started — but nevertheless, it happened as we showed up here. The attacks on our country affected our economy. Corporate scandals affected the confidence of people and therefore affected the economy. My decision on Iraq, this kind of march to war, affected the economy.” –George W. Bush, Meet the Press.

Mar. 11, 2004—”The march to war hurt the economy. Laura reminded me a while ago that remember what was on the TV screens — she calls me, ‘George W.’ — ‘George W.’ I call her, ‘First Lady.’ No, anyway — she said, we said, march to war on our TV screen.” –George W. Bush, Bay Shore, New York.

Jan. 16, 2007— “And one thing we want during this war on terror is for people to feel like their life’s moving on, that they’re able to make a living and send their kids to college and put more money on the table.” –George W. Bush, interview on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,

  41. Bluestocking says:

Well, Matalin is a longtime mouthpiece for the GOP — so really, it’s by no means a surprise that she thinks the majority of Americans are stupid and sheeplike enough to be manipulated by something as simple as a few news reports into thinking that they’re suffering financially. The American people as a whole may be wantonly ignorant and unbelievably gullible in many respects but they’re not that stupid — they don’t think that they’re struggling financially simply because someone else tells they they are. Tell the people who are using the Wal-Mart gift cards which they received for Christmas to buy food and other necessities (something which has been happening enough to get attention in the press) that they’re not struggling financially. Try telling that to people who are watching food as well as gasoline prices rising — and don’t even bother trying to claim that the two aren’t related, since nearly all the food on American tables (even most of the fresh produce) traveled a considerable distance by truck to get there.

  56. Ms_Joanne says:

I was talking with some other posters last night, trying to figure out WHY the right is doing what they are doing. Why are they intentionally ruining this country? There is no benefit that I could see. It’s a bad situation for almost everyone involved from business down to average Americans. What is the point?

The consensus (of three :-) )seemed to be that this is economical warfare to create two classes; to eradicate the middle class completely and to transfer the wealth of this country to the few and the rest get nothing.

We now have one in 10 Americans in prison. I read a very powerful interview with a woman who wrote the book Love and Consequences: A Memoir of Hope and Survival. She was in the Bloods in South-Central LA, and she got out. She is the only one, of all the people she knew, that got out. Almost everyone else is either dead or in prison (btw, I highly recommend this interview – sorry, I don’t know how to do that ref thing): http://www.truthdig.com/interview/item/20080229_a_girl_gangsters_story_of_survival/ , (and make sure to read the one comment) but this one passage really drove something home.

Everyone was disappearing into jails. And it wasn’t just because of drugs. That’s a misconception. One homeboy, 17 years old, had been a foster kid. He had no priors; no nothing. What he did have was two homies staying at his house. He finally told them they’d have to leave and offered to help them move. The car broke down and they said they would go get another, meaning steal one. He didn’t want anything to do with that. He left on foot and they went and got another car. They ended up pulling around and told him to get in. He was in a Crip neighborhood and scared, so he got in. The police pulled them over two blocks later, and he’s got a life sentence in prison because he was deemed to have been an accomplice to a carjacking, which is seen as a “gang-related crime” and is thus sentenced under “gang enhancement” statutes. And that was it, even though the lady said in court that he hadn’t been there when they took the car. His life was over. Here’s a foster kid who worked his entire way through high school, tried hard, got a full scholarship to college and it all got taken away because he got into the car. Was that the best judgment in the world on his part? No. Did it deserve the kind of outcome he received? Hell no. In white communities I think they call that joy riding. And they certainly don’t hand out life sentences for it.

This gave me a little more insight into why we are building all those prisons (along with the number of people currently incarcerated), the severe poor, the blacks, the underclass are being shifted off into prisons, and the middle class is becoming the new poor.

I still have a hard time accepting this concept of their glee in ruining our nation – but I also had such a major case of cognitive dissonance over us invading Iraq for their oil that it took me more than two years to accept it.

Look at what is happening here. How many parallels are we seeing that lead up to the Great Depression?

Honestly, the right can say whatever they want. The fact that Bush didn’t know gas was approaching $4.00 a gallon (and the look on his face when he found out was a look of pleasure, not of horror) is but one more indicator that he is out of touch. But it’s really much worse than that; he doesn’t care. The people know what it is taking to get by. Now that equity has been tapped out and the home ATM is no longer functioning, people have turned to credit cards to survive. What’s going to happen when the credit markets implode like the subprime did, I don’t know. But I seriously fear finding out.

  57. Mr. Evil says:

I couldn’t agree more. My fear is that we have gone beyond a ression. We are headed straight for a depression. Look at the number of people who are losing their homes or are about to lose their homes.

The City of Vallejo, CA is looking at filing bankruptcy. An entire city contemplating bankruptcy.

The sub-prime mortgages started the whole ball rolling. Credit cards are next. The news of people who are behind on credit card payments is huge. According to CardTrak.com, credit card delinquency rates are up 100 basis points in the past 12 months alone.

From the American Center for Progress: “The lending industry that no longer aggressively issues subprime mortgages continues to aggressively market credit cards, especially credit cards with subprime-like lending terms, such as a variety of higher fees that are poorly disclosed.”

All I can say is that I don’t see things getting any better. I’m planning for the worst and hoping for the best.

Matalin was part of the inside group called the “Iraq Group” who operating inside the white house prior to the invasion of Iraq. Their mission was to help “Sell” the war to the American public. Notice the word “Sell” because they knew Americans would not understand invading a country that had not attacked us, posed not threat to us and had nothing to do with 9-11.

Matalin, Feith, Wolfowitz, Perle and others had to come up with a scenario that would scare the American public into supporting the invasion of a soverign country. That’s when they hit on the brain storm of WMD’s and mushroom clouds.

I pray one day this group will be tried for war crimes against humanity. Because of their actions millions of Americans and Iraqis have been maimed or have been killed. If the true story ever comes to light this crime will dwarf the killing fields and the holocaust.

Another BUSHCO CRIME FAMILY member blaming the MSM on the economy. These reich wingers have nothing to worry about because they have raped and pillaged this country for this war and their own GREED AND POWER.These people are so greedy that they have more $$$$ than they know what to do with, they have no worries about the high cost of gas, utilities ,housing and transportation. They have no worries about their jobs because most reich wingers like M.M. because she is a stratgist for the crooks. The BUSCHCO CRIMEE FAMILY has more $$$$ than the rest of this put together, it goes to show that “crime does pay”.

She is absolutely correct! If the media did not let me know that Oil is $100 a barrel and I cannot afford to put gas in my car..I would be more optimistic therefore the high prices of things and the fact that the dollar has tanked would not be an issue! And then we ALL could have ponies!

  70. opus says:

Matlin is part of the group that uses “food insecurity” in lieu of starvation. They refuse to acknowledge that anyone is actually suffering under the conservative agenda. They refuse to admit we have homeless people, poor people, or even sick people who didn’t cause it themselves, and if they dare go hypothetical and say there may be this kind of problem in some alternate universe created and sold by the liberal media, then they deserve it for being weak and/or stupid. I would love to see her spend the night in a homeless shelter.
