At the annual Dallas County Republican party Reagan Day Dinner this weekend, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) lamented Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) ascension as the presumptive Republican nominee, saying McCain wasn’t his “first choice” or even his “second, third or fourth choice.” “I sort of liken it to a grieving process,” Cornyn told the 500 or so die-hard Republicans at the event. “You come to acceptance.”

Bend over and take it.
March 3rd, 2008 at 4:47 pmIt’s the Republican way.
So, what part of Reagan were they serving? Maybe McCain can barbeucue some Reagan next time he has the press over for dinner.

Congrats Goo Goo. McCain gets to be president of February, maybe even March. With his fuzzy grasp of all things economic, not to mention his support for an eternal occupation of Iraq the odds of him surviving a debate with either Democratic contender are remote at best. Never trust a poll taken before the conventions, especially when those being polled don’t know with any certainty who the opposing nominee will be.
March 3rd, 2008 at 5:12 pmWell, Senator, if I were you, and I felt that bad about it, I would submit my resignation immediately, quit politics forever, and become a hermit in some remote location never to be heard from again. March 3rd, 2008 at 5:19 pmThis is precisely WHY McCain can’t win the presidency. He is a default GOP candidate whose party will not enthusiastically motivate enough Republicans to go out and vote for him. Oh, he’ll get the lip service from GOP pundits and politicians that Republicans WILL unite behind him, but too many Republicans are going to sit this one out. Only an historical Republican voter turn out can defeat the Democratics. And for that to happen, ALL the disparate factions of the GOP would have to set aside their signficiant differences and passionately get out the vote for McCain. Not only does McCain need the moderates and right wing zealots of his party, he also needs Independents and pro-Iraq war Democrats. McCain’s pleased acceptance of the endorsements of right-wingers Rod Parsely and John Hagee is not going to attract Independts or pro-Iraq occupation Democrats. And his attempts to accept their endorsements without endorsing their hateful comments and radical values will alienate right-wing supporters. McCain is not the candidate the Republican establishment wanted nor is he the candidate the religious right wanted. Their support for his presidential election will be lukewarm at best. The Democratic support for their candidate will be record-breaking!

Goon_golly can keep saying this until the cows come home, it still won’t make any difference. Think of it this way, Al Gore won the 2000 election. Now do you think anyone who voted for Al Gore is now going to vote for McCain? Then you have to factor in all the new voters who are coming out of the woodwork, and a vast majority of them are voting for Obama (and working for him). And finally factor in the Independent voters who are now almost as many as Republicans. With all those factors in play and the fact that Democrats are voting in vastly larger numbers than the Republicans, there is no way McCain is going to win.
March 3rd, 2008 at 5:37 pmWe don’t follow polls nearly as much as Liberals who change their positions as the polls change, but since TP is obsessed with any poll that purportedly shows Democrats ahead, I thought it only fair to point out those that go the other way.
Comment by goon_golly — March 3, 2008 @ 5:27 pm
In other words, “conservatives” don’t believe in polls unless they agree with the results and don’t like polls because it suggests that Americans might have opinions of their own. “Good government” means telling people what to think and believe rather than responding to what people already think and believe.
We got that a long time ago, goon.

Good government means following the will of the people, which is something that modern Republicans have repeatedly failed to accomplish. Nice try, though, goon, but the mantle of 1960s Republicans and, um, Democratic President Lyndon Johnson doesn’t sit on the Republicans of 2008. It’s pretty amusing that you have to go back more than 40 years to come up with something noble accomplished by your party, though.

Definitions of republic on the Web:
democracy: a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them
a form of government whose head of state is not a monarch; “the head of state in a republic is usually a president”
Definitions
benevolent dictator
noun
A dictator that has power because the people choose to allow him/her to; who must make wise use of power since the benevolent dictatorship system allows them to be peaceably removed from office.

There’s the problem. Gigi wants a “Super Daddy”. He wants a tyrant. You see, Gigi, our country is, theoretically, a representative democracy. That means our elected officials are supposed to represent the views of “We The People”. We The People are the ultimate authority and, come November, our “leaders” are going to be given a poignant reminder of that fact. Our government exists at the will of the people and any who refuse to relearn that simple fact will be pushed aside, ignored, or buried. It’s up to them.

Juggle any poll you like. The WILL of the people won’t be denied. And the WILL of the people is that the neocons be removed, repudiated and expunged from our government. Who knows? Maybe things will get worse. But the Republicans won’t be given the chance to continue down the course they chose.

March 3rd, 2008 at 6:47 pmForTruth
I too am concerned, but I feel the competitive passion that Democrats feel for “their” candidates is in no way similar to the entrenched religious, moral and philosophical divisions within the Republican party. Clinton and Obama supporters simply want “their” candidate to be president “more” than they want the other Democrat to be president. They don’t find the opposing candidate markedly different or unacceptable. It’s a matter of perference rather than a matter of incompatible beliefs, values or philosophies. While there will be some supporters with hard feelings once Clinton or Obama wins, the losing Democrat will immediately and convincingly through his/her full support to the party’s nominee.
Romney’s and Huckabees supporters both loathe McCain who they see as far too liberal. McCain isn’t his party’s majority choice; he is their minority choice. He garnered the most votes, but he did not win a majority of his party’s votes. While many thought that McCain was the Republican’s best candidate to run against the Democrats, he is not the best candidate to unite, rally and motivate Republicans to vote in the numbers it will take to out vote Democrats.
