Interesting how oil has increased from 65 to 100 dollars/bbl since the Dubai Mercantile Exchange opened on June 1 last year and began trading oil futures. Nice little deal they have with NYMEX.

The trolls have all left grade school and are hiding in the basement. They only like to cause a stir and waste our time.

Either that or they want a return of the Hitler youth to make them feel good about their lives.

Pitiful isn't it.

Wind farms and solar energy shields would not work here in Louisiana because of the frequency of huricanes and other Gulf related storms that carry strong winds, heavy rains, and hail. Where does that leave us? Still needing natural gas and oil.

You are so right. We'd have been energy independent years ago if Carter's plan, which for the most part was enacted, hadn't been dismantled by the Reagan admn.

World affairs? I think it was more like reagun trading with the enemy to undermine a sitting president in an American military effort to free the hostages.

And the hostage situation was "world affairs". It's too bad that the voters were hoodwinked by Reagan. And here they were hoodwinked again by Bush. Show how gullible the American public can be.

Southern Man-
     The larger point is:
OIL and GAS are going to remain the "only answer" as long as nobody starts asking intelligent questions...
None of us knows where alternative energy research will lead and OIL and GAS COMPANIES would like it to stay that way- but just because THEY are heavily invested in these Dinosaur technologies doesn't mean that we have to follow...
Start now! You will begin to see benefits that none of us have dreamed of yet...

Nor does mass transit provide an answer for many , either……..

Comment by MCMetal

Unfortunately, you’re going to have to suffer personally to solve these problems. Might suck to take mass transit, but doesn’t suck enough to keep those who don’t have the luxury of choosing “car or bus” from riding. You might even have to move into the city, sell your house and live in an apartment, but you won’t die. This issue comes down to how well you’re able to survive during truly hard times.

Comment by DieNowForPeace — March 4, 2008 @ 4:47 pm

Much of this could have been resolved if we'd invested more in public transit in the first place, but I get defensive about people suggesting that there is something wrong with mass transit. It doesn't suck. At least, it doesn't have to, depending on where you are and how much foresight has been used.

Of course, I work for a public transit agency, so I am prejudiced, but a lot of people are moving to places like Portland specifically because a car isn't required. If people start thinking ahead and starting planning not only communities but their own lives, a lot of what we think of as "essential" could be done without -- like a private automobile, or the sort of households that have more automobiles than they have drivers.

The only real problem with this vehicle is that it’s max speed is 40 mph. The speed limit on most of my drive is 45 to 55. I am somewhat afraid that the people following me might just try to force me off the road after following me for 3-4 miles.

Ho ho! I've been in the store in Portland and talked to the people there about possibly using electric cars at work. Judging from their response, the current versions (built in China) are well-suited for very local service in an urban environment, but in addition to the speed restriction (imposed in part because they lack standard safety equipment like airbags) they have a fairly limited travel distance before they need to be recharged.

Best thing in the store were the little Zappy scooters, which they're promoting primarily for use in warehouses. Amazingly fast and very easy to ride. And fun!

First of all, it's not a solar energy shield- that's 'Star Trek' or maybe Ray-Guns magical 'Star Wars' missle sheild- those are both fairy tales.
Wind farms and solar energy panels are a REAL solution to the energy crisis that get better and better everyday... but no one is suggesting that this is the ONLY solution for energy production.
Like most intoxicants, Natural gas and Oil are fine in moderation but you guys are on a binge! Time to investigate other methods of power production- site specific methods, like perhaps tide generators that would take advantage of those hurricanes? Let's diversify our energy options, make sense?

Have you considered simple lifestyle changes to decrease demand until such time as a more viable solution is available to you?

Had to give you a recommend on #67! Visionary indeed! ;)

We could be on our way to the greatest ecconomic boom ever seen if we had just taken that other path 7 short years ago...

Man, now I'm depressed. Why is this so hard for the rest of this country to see?
