Bush And McCain: Photo-Op Friends Forever

At the White House today, President Bush will officially anoint Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) as his chosen successor with a carefully orchestrated photo-op. At noon, Bush will greet McCain “at the North Portico — a grand formal entrance at the front door” of the White House — before hosting a lunch for the senator in the private dining room. Afterwards, the two “will appear together in the Rose Garden for the official embrace.”

Here’s a trip down memory lane of Bush and McCain’s previous embraces:

buchmccain4e.jpg

As MSNBC’s Chris Matthews noted last night, McCain is “the man who represents the least change” from the failed policies of the Bush administration. With the President’s official blessing, McCain is now set to carry on his legacy in a “third Bush term.”

Digg It!

Here’s a question to all Republicans and those considering voting for McCain. Why would someone vote for McCain when, back in 2000, he was considered a worse choice than George Bush?

Please make an argument for McCain but include how it sets with his failed run for the White House in 2000.

Well if Primary voter turnout is any indication of the coming avalanche of Democrats finally voting this hobbled Republican party into obscurity McCain will soon have plenty of time on his hands for barbeques and sleep over parties with his new BFF. Well, Clinton is the best GOTV machine the GOP has. Their Neanderthal base has been trained to hate all things Clinton and will turn out to vote against her, as they turned out in Texas and Ohio to ensure that they wouldn’t have to face Obama in the general.

On top of that, she will bring out lots of Republicans that will vote R in every downticket race on the ballot. Possibly even turning control of one or both houses of congress back over to the Republicans.

I really have no problem with Clinton being POTUS, but I am a realist and the reality is, she will bring the Republicans out in droves.

There are enough sensible Republicans who do care about America, and look upon the horrors of the Bush administration with dismay; who will either stay home in November, or quietly cast their votes for the Democrat once they have entered the voting booth.
The specter of another bumbling old man twitching on the strings of the oil and arms industries will be too much to stomach.

  35. hellinabucket says:

You have valid points RantingTommy. If Clinton is the Democratic nominee I do think that will be the divisive push the Republicans are looking for. What they will also get is someone who fights a lot harder than the Democratic candidates of the past.

Its not as if Hillary is unpopular. Clearly she has support, a lot of support, and if she is determined to be the nominee, Obama will throw all of his weight behind her.

  43. Keltoi says:

This is funny. The morning after Clinton rises from the grave and threatens to tear her own party to shreds, NO mention of it is made in Thinkfast and a entire thread is devoted to McCain and Bush getting their picture taken together.

I would think that topic A-1 among progressives would be looming civil war in the Democratic party. Clearly, whoever eventually wins the Dem nomination will try to paint McCain as no different than Bush, but everyone here already believes that, anyway. It is the independents the Left is going to need, especially after the Kitchen Sink strategy goes on for six more weeks at least.

  44. hellinabucket says:

You are so right dim wit. We are all wrapped up in the primaries now. And an historic one at that. When the dust settles (hopefully lawers aren’t involved) the democratic party will have a united front with goals. That is to place a Democrat in the White House and to increase their majorities in the House and Senate.

The congressional seats are going to be a bigger gain than the white house. In my opinion.

As if I could possibly derail TP from bagging on McCain. It ain’t gonna happen. But seriously, a willingness to discuss the Democratic primaries has been largely underepresented as Thread topics; it happens in the commentary section because posters insist on talking about it, not just me.

It is like the Center for American Progress is a kid hiding their head under the pillow, not wanting to look at the monster in the closet. HRC is going to do whatever it takes to win, including destroy her own party. That is interesting politics.

really, no matter what the D candidates do, they could not hope to be as glaring an emblem of failure as the R’s now are – fielding a candidate none of them wanted in the first place – a man who can’t speak or campaign well, who has 40 years of skeletons in his closet, marginal health, and nothing but war to campaign for. Clinton and Obama could have fistfights every day from now til July and not approach the state of ruin the gop finds itself in.

I’ll illustrate my point. CALLING ALL DEMOCRATS/PROGRESSIVES/LIBERALS ON THIS THREAD:

Do you love one Democratic candidate and hate the other? To the point that if your favorite doesn’t get the nod, you would vote for McCain, a third party candidate, or stay home in November? Or do you plan to vote for the Democratic candidate no matter who it is?

I’m curious to see how “splintered” we are at this point.

Just because it’s the way you see things, Keltoi, doesn’t mean it’s “the reality”.

I have a slight concern along the lines you’re pushing, but I’m pretty confident that, once the nomination is settled, the Democratic Party will unite and beat the living snot out of the Republicans in November.

It think the economy IS “the reality”. I think the nationwide dissatisfaction with Bush IS “the reality”. I think McCain’s struggle to raise money, and his desperate overtures to the Far Right IS “the reality of the situation”.

The topic of THIS thread is Bush/McCain, which is why we are discussing that “dead horse” here. And the horse ain’t all that dead — as long as McCain continues his transmogrification into Bush, expect to hear a great deal more about it.

And yet Bilbo you break your own “talk about the troll not to it” rule with me fairly often.

What is the obsession with Troll designation? What does it mean, what does it matter? You are a smart person, I find your opinions interesting and your writing style enjoyable, what difference does it make we have conflicting opinions? You can’t talk to someone you disagree with? I am not here to disrupt discussion and I often stimulate it by offering a divergent viewpoint.

I don’t get it, have never got it.

That was when I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. Won’t happen again. This is the last time I will talk directly to you. The difference is that you are here mostly to disrupt and to push your conservative views even if they are based on lies and fantasies. It’s not a matter of differing opinions. It is that you state your views as undisputed facts and rarely back them up with proof, which is what all the other trolls do.

  99. toasterhead says:

Do you love one Democratic candidate and hate the other? To the point that if your favorite doesn’t get the nod, you would vote for McCain, a third party candidate, or stay home in November? Or do you plan to vote for the Democratic candidate no matter who it is?

I’m curious to see how “splintered” we are at this point.

    Comment by missmolly — March 5, 2008 @ 12:06 pm

    Ok, I’ll bite.

Love and hate aren’t words I apply to politicians per se, but I would say at this point I strongly like one Democratic candidate and moderately dislike the other. The candidate I like wasn’t my first choice in the campaign, but then my first choice didn’t have a whelk’s chance in a supernova of getting the nod anyhow. And he has a pretty good platform on poverty reduction, trade, energy, and foreign policy – not ideal, but good.

At this point, I’m really not sure what I’ll do in November if the candidate I moderately dislike gets the nomination. I really don’t like the way she’s been running her campaign, I really don’t like how connected she is with the Washington machine, and I’m not a huge fan of her husband’s foreign policy, particularly in Africa and Indonesia. If she gets the nod, she’s going to need to give me a reason to vote for her other than fear of McCain.

I wasn’t criticizing her for being on Fox, I was criticizing her for cozying up to Karl Rove, especially since she is starting to act like him.

Fox is probably going to be in a Clinton love fest for a while hoping that will help to get her in as the Democratic candidate. It isn’t because they like her, they actually loathe her. It’s because they think she is the easiest candidate to beat, and they are right.

  108. batteries says:

Well, Clinton is the best GOTV machine the GOP has. Their Neanderthal base has been trained to hate all things Clinton and will turn out to vote against her, as they turned out in Texas and Ohio to ensure that they wouldn’t have to face Obama in the general.

On top of that, she will bring out lots of Republicans that will vote R in every downticket race on the ballot. Possibly even turning control of one or both dell inspiron 8100 battery, dell inspiron 8200 battery houses of congress back over to the Republicans.

I really have no problem with Clinton being POTUS, but I am a realist and the reality is, she will bring the Republicans out in droves.
