Bush May Fire CentCom Chief Adm. Fallon, Replace With Commander More ‘Pliable’ To War With Iran»

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has called CENTCOM commander Adm. William Fallon “one of the best strategic thinkers in uniform today.” Fallon opposed the “surge” in Iraq and has consistently battled the Bush administration to avoid a confrontation with Iran, calling officials’ war-mongering “not helpful.” Privately, he has vowed that an attack on Iran “will not happen on my watch.”

Unfortunately, this level-headed thinking and willingness to stand up to President Bush may cost him his job. According to a new article by Thomas P.M. Barnett in the April issue of Esquire magazine (on newsstands March 12), Fallon may be prematurely “relieved of his command” as soon as this summer:

[W]ell-placed observers now say that it will come as no surprise if Fallon is relieved of his command before his time is up next spring, maybe as early as this summer, in favor of a commander the White House considers to be more pliable. If that were to happen, it may well mean that the president and vice-president intend to take military action against Iran before the end of this year and don’t want a commander standing in their way.

In the Esquire article, Fallon also said that he was in “hot water” with the White House for meeting with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. Fallon noted that such meetings are his job, and essential to making sure that regional leaders don’t get “too spun up” by the administration’s war rhetoric.

In today’s White House press briefing, a reporter asked spokeswoman Dana Perino about the Esquire piece. Perino refused to say whether Fallon’s position is secure until the end of his tenure, instead attacking “rumor mills that don’t turn out to be true.” Watch it:

Screenshot

According to Barnett’s piece, Fallon also denied ever calling Petraeus an “ass-kissing little chickenshit.” He called the allegations “[a]bsolute bullshit.”

Digg It!

Transcript:

QUESTION: Dana, I know you have (inaudible), but if you’ll trust me to quote from it, there’s an article in Esquire magazine about Admiral William Fallon that says this: Because of Fallon’s caution on Iran, Fallon may soon be unemployed because he is doing what a generation of young officers in the U.S. military are now openly complaining that their leadership didn’t do on their behalf in the run up to the war in Iraq. He’s standing up to the commander in chief and he thinks he’s contemplating a strategically unsound war.

Is that an accurate portrayal of their relationship?

PERINO: You’re right. But before I came here, I told you I haven’t seen the article. I don’t know who wrote it. I’ve never heard anything of that sort, except for in rumor mills that don’t turn out to be true.

So, I’ll check it out, but I don’t think…

(CROSSTALK)

QUESTION: … opposing views on Iran?

PERINO: I don’t know.

(CROSSTALK)

QUESTION: … saying that he’s been in hot water with the White House because — even meeting with Mubarak.

PERINO: President Bush’s position on Iran is very clear. It doesn’t mean that other people can’t have other thoughts or positions, but I’m not going to characterize Admiral Fallon.

And let me take a look at the article and then we’ll try to get back to you.

No surprise here. Anyone with any independent thought who works with the president is either “invited to the White House” (after which they appear to have been transformed into a babbling sycophant) or fired outright.

I guess Fallon refused to surrender his soul.

And the only reason I can think of for Bushco to remove this particular roadblock NOW is they are ginning up to bomb Iran.

I am hoping the American people aren’t that stupid. But I’ve been wrong before…

Until they do turn out to be true. Congress needs to get going on making sure that this does not happen. The best way they can do it is to not give the military enough funding to launch an attack on Iran. Unfortunately that is the only way they can do something. They can pass a resolution telling Bush he has to have their permission to attack Iran, but we all know how much good that will do. He will ignore them the way he has ignored them for the last 7 years.

If I were a Republican operative, I would be very worried about this. Bush attacking Iran IS NOT going to play well in Peoria. And when McBush supports Bush for doing it, that will show this country what they will be getting if they vote for McWar.

It really is fun with McCain’s last starting with “Mc”, it allows so many permutations of his name.

  8. McWars Says:

it may well mean that the president and vice-president intend to take military action against Iran before the end of this year and don’t want a commander standing in their way.

We no longer have a military to send to Iran, Darth Bush.

  9. Zimzone Says:

Bush has said he makes his decidering based on Commanders, not media.

That changes, of course, when Commanders disagree with Bush.

Fallon is a good man. He’s also no fool. If he’s against invading Iran, he has two choices; stand up or stand down.

If, as some suspect, DarthBush are going to invade prior to 11/08, their first military task is to jettison Fallon.

Will McSame stand by & say nothing?…count on it.

  10. Bobwurst Says:

What would the consequences be to the military for refusing to play along?

  11. McWars Says:

This goes with out saying, but I’d recommend that Congress stand its ground. Congress should give no more of its legislative time to this “president” and his vice grip.

Not even more symbolic resolutions, that will ultimately be misinterpreted.

  12. McWars Says:

I imagine that Gates would contest this. He’s been a far better SecDef than Rumsfeld.

  13. toasterhead Says:

So has the Bush Administration consulted the Saudis about this? And the Iraqis? Cause last I checked, Iran and Saudi Arabia and Iraq were well on their way to becoming BFFNs (best friends for now).

Stupid question, I know. This administration doesn’t consult anyone outside The Hertitage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute.

There is really not much Bush can do about it if they revolt. I’m sure he has some of his Blackwater private army people in and around DC. But they will be no match for the US military.

It doesn’t mean he didn’t really say it either. He just may not be admitting he said it because he wants to keep his job. And I think he wants to keep his job because he knows that he is pretty much the only buffer between the madman in the white house and attacking Iran.

I don’t know - Fallon sounds pretty down with the talking points.

    This is from yesterday:

‘Fallon said there has been a dramatic decrease of violence in Iraq, but warned that such gains are not irreversible, adding, “I see this on an upward vector.”

Still, he noted in his prepared remarks that “multiple strains of violent extremism remain a threat to the government and populace and some of these groups benefit from external support,” namely Iran and Syria.

In his testimony, Fallon blames Iran and Syria for fanning the flames of global terrorism. He said Tehran is providing training, money and weapons to both Shiite militia groups in Iraq, as well as Hezbollah and Hamas, which the U.S. government regards as terrorist organizations.’

The people need to do more than just wake up.
What those two towns in Vermont did needs to happen ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
Bush and Cheney are a great danger to this country. Talking, protesting will have no effect on them. They need to have SERIOUS heat put on them. That means MASSIVE OPPOSITION, the threat of impeachment, indictments and jail. Anything short of that will have no effect.
They have already put us in a HUGE hole that will be very difficult to get out of.
If they attack Iran what do you think will happen to oil prices? The economy and the dollar will be devastated. Most of the world will despise us. It will trash any chances of having any kind of peace for America and it will trigger violence that could last for decades.

Of course China and Russia won’t take kindly to attacking Iran, as they get much of their oil from them.

  78. Bad Eye Says:

Thus with all the political reconciliation that Bush says is currently happening in Iraq, and with the announcement for the 60th time that we are turning a corner in Iraq and things are going swell, there’s no reason to think that by, oh, October of this year that Americans will really be beating the drum to bring our troops home.

But…we can’t have that, now can we? If things start winding down in Iraq in 6 months, then McCain won’t have anything to campaign about. The war and the economy will be the top two issues, and by his own admission he sure as hell doesn’t understand the economy, so that leaves the war. He’s already declared that there will be more wars, but I don’t think he can get specific and say, “Elect me and I’ll invade Iran and continue to protect America and its freedoms.” But Bush can invade, and the damn Democrats in Congress will go right along with him. Just like the war in Iraq gave Bush a reason to be re-elected in 2004, a war with Iran will bolster efforts to get McCain elected in ‘08.

The abrupt move renewed concerns about the willingness of Iraq’s leaders to act against sectarianism and cast doubts on U.S. efforts to build an independent judiciary.

The collapse of the trial stunned American and Iraqi officials who had spent more than a year assembling the case, which they said included a wide array of evidence.

“This shows that the judicial system in Iraq is horribly broken,” said a U.S. legal adviser who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly. “And it sends a terrible signal: If you are Shia, then no worries; you can do whatever you want and nothing is going to happen to you.”

So much for progress in Iraq.

  80. Tenebrae Says:

That’s right, Dubya “listens to our commanders” on military matters. And if they don’t tow the line and dare to take a stand or tell the truth, he can’s their butt.

Because while he says he listens to them, he only wants them to say exactly what he wants to hear, regardless of reality.

  82. WaltTheMan Says:

Cain was satisfied with killing 25% of the Earth’s population. John would, of course, want to do better!

  83. Evil Spaniard Says:

What a great strategy! Keep beheading generals who dare to disagree, until only the yes men are left! It worked so well for so many defeated leaders in History…

  84. Arn Gunnutes Says:

Just got back from a Ralph Nader fund raiser, a good time was had by all. It was great to hear Ralph speculate as to which rich corporate lawyer would be on the Dems ticket. I wrote a check and left as he was giving folks who attended rides around the block in his Ford Pinto which has been converted to burn McDonald’s used fry oil or corn juice. VOTE GREEN, VOTE RALPH 08!

    NOT ‘Bomb Bomb Iran’ McCain!!”

    Sincerely,

    McNRA HUSSEIN Gun Nut(e)s

    Yup. There’s Cain. And then there’s MCCain…

Bushboy stands by his generals, and always listens to them. Too bad that Fallon is an navy boy.

So he took, what, 3 trips around the block? Your $5 check probably didn’t cover the fry oil he burned. He’s the only guy in the world McStain could beat.

  89. dotmafia Says:

Wouldn’t the military have to stage a coup against the government to be able to stop them from taking action they deemed to be unwise and dangerous? Reminds me of Stauffenberg and the other top German officers trying to stop the Nazi leadership from continuing the war.

  90. Cal Malenky Says:

His dad had two wars. He wants three.
This will be the flaming bag of dogshit that he leaves on the doorstep of the next president. Just because he can.
Expect lots of shenanigans from Bush to help McCain.
By the way, what’s the carbon footprint of Bush campaigning for McCain? Flying a 747 around for 8 months to carry one guy, his armored cars and entourage ain’t exactly green.

  91. Cal Malenky Says:

    Oil’s not expensive enough yet.
He can fix that with a couple of B2s and some cruise missiles and some other weapons Dick’s been dying to try out.

  92. Cal Malenky Says:

    29-
Cain killed Abel. How many people is Mc-Cain willing to kill?

That could be a campaign slogan.

  93. Cal Malenky Says:

Ralph Nader dove a Pinto? Don’t those explode when rear-ended?

  94. marlow Says:

One again, chimpy takes his advice from the generals on the ground in-theater. I wonder if we can expect similar wisdom from ‘ol John McSame.

  95. twocents Says:

Mark my words, the country will be behind McCain come November after the radical right gets some bombs detonated in a few public places and maybe a little anthrax thrown in the mail system for good measure between now and then. The Homeland Security Advisory System will raise the alert to HIGH a couple of times purely for scare tactics. People in this country scare very, very easily and the reins of power will not be given up.

  96. Shopping Cart Software Says:

I believe Bush is doing the right choice firing him. If you do not trust someone they have to go.

  97. peacenow Says:

“Couple this with Fran Townsend’s appt. to the PFIAB yesterday. Things are shaping up for some sort of military action regarding Iran.”
