Bush: McCain ‘Is Not Going To Change’ My Foreign Policy

At the White House today, President Bush threw his support behind Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). In a press conference after a private lunch, a reporter asked the duo how McCain would “make the case that you’re going to provide the change that the voters seem to want.”

Bush quickly cut in, declaring that McCain is “not going to change”:

BUSH: And the good news about our candidate there will be a new president, a man of character and courage, but he’s not going to change when it comes to taking on the enemy. He understands this is a dangerous world.

Following up on the press conference, Rich Lowry of the National Review said on Fox News that Bush is framing McCain as embracing his old platforms, “someone determined absolutely to take on our enemy and someone with a big heart who cares for those who hurt.” Lowry said McCain was shaping up to be Bush’s “successor”:

Who does that sound like? A ‘compassionate conservative’ who wants to take on our enemies. It sounds like George W. Bush. … That’s obviously the way he views John McCain, as a successor to himself.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/bushmac3.320.240.flv]

As a “compassionate conservative” who wants to stay in Iraq indefinitely, McCain is officially pursuing the “third Bush term.”

Digg It!

Somehow I don’t think a dinghy is capable of carrying a 10-ton anchor – the maximum weight capacity of an 11-foot dinghy is only 845 pounds so I think maintaining bouyancy while carrying a 20,000 pound load would be a significant problem and an almost certain violation of Coast Guard regulations.

“Well, we need someone who will keep us on the offensive in the war on terror.”
    – WHAT war on terror? Oh — you mean the manufactured PR ploy that enabled Bush to invade Iraq? Your “war on terror” is about as real as the manufactured cold war against Canada in the movie “Canadian Bacon”. While a certain amount of security here at home is prudent, any leader who will “keep us on the offensive” in a travesty is a bad idea — as Bushco has already proven.

    “Democrats can’t do that.”
    – Sure they can. It’s just that they WON’T. That is, if we elect the right ones.

“Heck. Instead of taking advantage of the political climate, they’re waging civil war over their candidate.”
    – No, we have two viable candidates still in the race. There is no “civil war” here — just the MSM trying to hype one up.

“Should there be a dem president and congress, they’d continue bickering…”
    – I’m sure there will be some disagreements on some issues, but it’s that filter that generally allows the good ideas through and traps the BS ideas where they belong. A Democratic President and a Democratic Congress CAN work together and have proved that in the past. This is far better than having a Congress that rolls over for the President every time without any dissent whatsoever (what we had from 2001-2007), or a Congress and a President that refuse to work together at all (what we have now).

“…and maybe even withdraw the troops.”
    – EXACTLY what we’re hoping for!

    “McCain will continue Bush’s policies.”
    – It sure looks that way. Reason enough to vote against him.

“Putin chose his successor, so why wouldn’t Bush do the same?”
    – Except that Bush didn’t exactly “choose” McCain, American Republican voters did (if Bush had actually had a choice, he probably would have chosen Romney). Furthermore, the Russian political system is a bit different from ours. Only a popular U.S. president could really influence the American people to vote for his preferred successor. Bush isn’t nearly popular enough to pull that off.

Frank M should not be confused with conservative posters who actually make rational points from time to time — Keltoi, good_golly, Captain Mantastic, Southern Man, etc. I don’t agree with a lot of what they post, but their viewpoints usually indicate some degree of sanity.

Frank M has always been like this — in fact, this is better than most days. Usually he will just drop a flaming off-topic turd in the middle of a thread to derail it and then run (or he will stick around for awhile and add to it if he has a case of troll diarrhea).

At least today, his bizarre “franklogic” was somewhat on topic.

And doing it openly!!! Proudly, it appears. Almost unbelievable!

McCain’s war wounds leave him unable to attend to his own hair and he sometimes requires assistance in dressing, tasks performed by nearby aides. His former communications director has said, “You comb someone’s hair once, and you never forget it.” McCain has been treated for recurrent skin cancer, including melanoma, in 1993, 2000, and 2002; one of the resulting operations left a noticeable mark on the left side of his face. These medical conditions, combined with his advancing years, led him to repeatedly use a self-deprecating remark during his 2007 campaigning: “I am older than dirt and have more scars than Frankenstein.”

Yesterday, John McCain defended the Air Force decision to overlook Wichita-based Boeing Co. for a $35 billion contract to build airborne refueling planes, saying he would not work to overturn the decision and saying that military decisions should not be about creating jobs. [McCain Town Hall Meeting, Waco TX, 3/3/08; AP, 3/3/08] Unfortunately for American workers, McCain has the record to back his statement up.

That comment should be on every bulletin board and locker at Seattle and Everett BOEING plants. BTW, Boeing is now based in Chicago…

    Just what we need…Bush McClone.

    Jebus helpus.

  87. leftcoast says:

McBush looked sheepish alongside Bush during the “welcome”. The press conference was scripted with Abramovitz (sp) of the Wash Post called upon first to give the softball question that Bush appeared scripted to give. McCain answered the questions about Bush being a help or hinderance during his campaign identically the same on two occasions. He looked pathetically incapable of standing at the WH then and in the future.
Bush was totally arrogant in selecting reporters, saying things like “Not you”, several times until he found the plant.

It’s actually going to prove very bad for the R’s that their candidate is already chosen, especially in light of who this particular R is. Once the obligatory handjobs-for-heroism have been dealt out, what is there to talk about except the kind of politician he has really been? That works very well for me, and the D I will be voting for. Feeding his weiner to the lapdog press isn’t going to offset anything.

Isn’t it amazing how Bush biotch-slapped McCrazy in 2000 for precisely the same things which have recently been outed with the lobbyist corruption? Now since Bush believes that he’s gotten away with all of the lying (wrong!) he’s honoring McCrazy for being as big a liar as he is. Utterly amazing hypocrisy.

Actually, I think that would make a great campaign ad. Play clips from all the negative ads that Bush/Rove ran against McCain in 2000, then cut to the picture of them hugging, and then cut to an inarticulate Bush endorsing McCain. It would be a pretty powerful ad.

WRT the question posed by your handle, “no, I’m not”.

zuck, a cleat is a handle kind of thingy on the gunnel (railing) of the boat, that is used when you tie up to a dock…

I’m aware of what a “cleat” is. There’s horn cleats, cam cleats, jam cleats, etc. They teach that is American Sailing Association (ASA) cert courses.

I was jes’ funnin’ on the thought that “cleat” might refer to the person one might wish to be attached to a rapidly descending (and heavy) anchor and rode.

    Cheers,

McCain is selling his soul for a few stupid words from the goof in chief. Imagine tap dancing around those sorts of comments about “carrying on” the same program as this insanity Bush has going. Good job McCain ahs pointed out we will need to be in Iraq 50 to 100 years cause that is how long it will take to clean up the horror that Bush et al are leaving. I live in Arizona and I shall have a letter to the editor every last day of this campaign to remind folks exactly what they are voting for., you know another 50 to 100 years. What a gift from McCain who seems ot have lost his way and his guts.

Bush is doing a great job of making the national election seem like a pointless exercise isn’t he? Obama doesn’t have to campaign anymore aslong as he lets Bush say things such as this. Brill.

  94. MapleStreet says:

I’m missing something: surely no one would be stupid enough and look at Bush’s low ratings and then run on a platform of continuing the Bush WH ?

  95. tombaker says:

well, PT Barnum did say that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public, so maybe it will work for McMaverick.

  96. tombaker says:

    from Buzzflash:

“In WaPo-ABC poll, Obama beats McCain by 12 points, Clinton beats McCain by 6 points. 3/6″

Those #’s have been moving up very nicely – after today’s saddling-with-the-albatross in the Rose Garden, they should keep right on climbing.

That “my friend” is the meme heard ’round the world. Let it go forth and multiply.

  99. GL2814 says:

Uh, he can change your so-called “foreign policy” all he wants if he becomes president, you no-account, failed, lame-duck little chimp!

If McCain has brain one in that silver haired head of his, he will.

  100. tombaker says:

McMaverick then sang: “hold me closer, tiny dancer”

  101. Cal Malenky says:

“Yeah, I trashed him but good in SC in 2000, but now I wanna help him keep the republican party in office.”
And McCain assumed the position and took little Dick like a man.

  102. shaun says:

maybe bush is getting himself ready for a role as mccain’s brain?

  103. Xisithrus says:

McSame? More like he is Dubyas McB*tch.

  104. batteries says:

McCain’s war wounds leave him unable to attend to his own hair and he sometimes requires assistance in dressing, tasks performed by nearby aides. His former communications director has said, “You comb someone’s hair once, and you never forget it.” McCain has been treated for recurrent skin cancer, including melanoma, in 1993, 2000, and 2002; one of the resulting operations left a noticeable mark dell inspiron 2650 battery, dell bat3151l8 battery on the left side of his face. These medical conditions, combined with his advancing years, led him to repeatedly use a self-deprecating remark during his 2007 campaigning: “I am older than dirt and have more scars than Frankenstein.”
