Newsweek reports that the Canadian government is no longer using evidence gained from CIA interrogations of a top al Qaeda detainee who was waterboarded. “The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), the country’s national-security agency, last month quietly withdrew statements by alleged Al Qaeda leader Abu Zubaydah from public papers outlining the case against two alleged terror ’sleeper’ operatives in Ottawa and Montreal.”
Canada remembers what it means to be a moral leader in the world… hats off to our neighbors to the north

Yeah… Good thing we’re only holding sham trials here, or we’d be screwed!
March 6th, 2008 at 9:59 amThe idea of what is legal or what is not, never occurs to someone who has the idea that the King or President has the right to change law to suit the King or Bushboy. Isn’t that what they teach in private law schools now?
March 6th, 2008 at 10:05 amgood for you canada, you all should also warn your people of how the united states tortures and spies on everyone too…

First class of Law 101 at Liberty University.
March 6th, 2008 at 10:11 amSomeday maybe we can lead by example too. Good on you Canada!!
March 6th, 2008 at 10:20 amAt least Canada is aware that torture obtains neither cedible nor reliable information.
If only the United States would wake up to reality, and stop torturing suspects.
Not one single life has been saved from “information” garnered by torture. If there had been, it would be palstered all over the front page by the neocon-biased MSM.
March 6th, 2008 at 10:25 amCanada: the real America.

March 6th, 2008 at 10:32 amoh canada!
i curse my french-canadian ancestors for immigrating to this country!
but then again, this country WAS a democracy back then and the constitution was revered.
canada remains in my retirement plans!
March 6th, 2008 at 10:38 amI continually gain respect for my father’s land of birth!
March 6th, 2008 at 10:48 amAnd that’s with a Conservative Prime Minister! Can’t blame this one on liberals.
March 6th, 2008 at 10:56 amOh, you mean Canada understands that torture simply gets the information that you want and not information that is true, good for them.
Bush Administration = Hitler Administration

Naturalized US citizen here, born in Montreal, & proud of CSIS taking a stand. Harper is an aberration btw; when a Dem Prez takes over he’ll change his tune, or be tossed out.
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons’ command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
The relatives in St. Anne de Beaupre wouldn’t like me to leave out the original French version:
O Canada!
March 6th, 2008 at 11:00 amTerre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Oh, so THAT’S where our democracy went. Is this a case of “practicing democracy over there, so we don’t have to practice it over here” or did democracy just run away because it was being so badly abused?
March 6th, 2008 at 11:01 amHarper is an aberration btw
Harper is just playing dumb because he has a minority government. If he is successful in doing little enough damage before the next election and wins a majority, then we will see the real Conservative Harper.
Don’t forget, Canada is still recovering from having sent Arar to the US who then sent him to Syria. Canada has apologized to Arar and asked (nicely of course) to have Arar taken off the no fly list but to no avail.
March 6th, 2008 at 11:05 amHave the Hosers been drinking too much green beer? Don’t they understand that all legal precedent must be thrown out, not only to convict torture victims of crimes for which we have little evidence, but to also keep the Truth buried as to what this so called War on Terror really is about?
March 6th, 2008 at 11:31 amGlad to see our neighbors to the north picking up the ’standard’ of decency and rule of law.
Can’t wait for the next non-Republican president to get started with the task of repairing this nation.

March 6th, 2008 at 12:15 pmAnyone know how hard it is to transfer citizenship from the US to Canada ?
Admittedly, if someone overseas were to ask me where I’m from, it would be much safer to say Canadian than USA.
Not to mention, that if I needed the aid of my embassy when overseas, had I rather see USA State Dept employees marching lockstep with Rice and Bush (and having endorsed torture) or would I trust the Canadian embassy more ?
March 6th, 2008 at 12:36 pmOh come on. Stop thinking that my country is a Moral beacon to be lauded… Harper would love to see a sleeper cell wreak havoc in Canada. That would mean more fear, more war, higher oil price, a more compliant media, more CSIS, more wiretapping…
Reminds you of something, doesn’t it…
March 6th, 2008 at 12:52 pm.

Remember Operation Enduring Freedom? Attacking the Taliban?
Canada: 78 killed, 270+ wounded
So shut the hell up, find a nice quiet forest, and get lost.

Amazing that everytime the USA is criticized, the trolls return to this argument. First in Healthcare, First in quality of life, …… despite what the statistics say.
March 6th, 2008 at 3:30 pmErr, what? “protect” against whom?! The Canada’s age-old mortal enemy, Russia invading to confiscate offensive hockey equipment? China sending an army on inflatable rubber boats to kindap all the polar bears and re-paint them into pandas? The Taliban paddling over the Atlantic to exterminate all the Moose, as dictated in that famous fatwah by the venerable radical cleric Al Have Bin MooseBitn? What are you blathering on about?
Oooh I know, you mean the same kind of “protection” that nice dude Vinny offers you against “accidents” when he shows up at your business, for a small fee. Insurance really. “Nice business you got here, it woulda been such shame if sumthin happened to it, now, ya think?”
That is why the US has been “protecting” all the of those, literally, hundreds of countries, such as Colombia or El Slvador or Iran (during the Shah’s and SAVAK time) or Usbekistan or Vietnam or …. all complete with US military bases in all of them at one time or another … real “protectors” you are! “Protecting” diligently all that needs “protecting” around the world, as showcased in Iraq! Brought to you by “protector” KBR and “protector” Halliburton!
I, as a Canadian, say take your “protection”, insert it pointy end up your rear end and ride off bouncing on it into some dark hole in Texas!
Canada when pressed by necessity, was able to field 3rd largest fleet of ships in WWII (471 warships), even though it started with next to nothing (15 warships at the start of the war). Canada is capable of manufacturing its own nukes if needs arises. No “protecting” by messed up Gangster Empires needed, thank you very much.
Protection from the US is another matter entirely.

You are a coward. You still live in the greatest country in the world, no matter what the hate America first crowd says. Get out!
Comment by Southern Man
Just facing facts does not make someone a coward SM. You don’t get to decide that. This country will be overtaken by China and maybe India as the worlds greatest economic superpower withing 20 years….this is not speculation. Additionally we will become the second largest military superpower after China in the same amont of time…….and we have regressives and conservatives to thank for that fact. Now who’s the coward?
