Perino Attacks Congress On Wiretapping Using A Factually Inaccurate Slide

During today’s White House press briefing, a reporter asked spokeswoman Dana Perino about the “prospects” for the Protect America Act (PAA) “from the White House point of view.” Perino quickly attacked Congress’s request for a 21-day extension to find a compromise between the House and Senate versions of the bill.

To underscore her point, Perino pulled out a slide that she had been “waiting to use” for “a couple of days.” Her attack fell flat, however, when reporters pointed out that the quote on the slide was inaccurately attributed to the nonexistent “Senate” Majority Leader Steny Hoyer:

PERINO: Well, what’s interesting is, you know, I actually have a slide I can actually bring up, now that you’ve asked. … We’ve been waiting to use this for a couple of days. [...]

About four weeks ago, everyone in this briefing room was asking why President Bush wouldn’t accept a three-week extension. And everyone thought it would be very reasonable to just give them 21 more days to work. Well, we’re nearing — I think we’re at 20 days today and they’re not even here.

QUESTION: Steny Hoyer is the House majority leader, by the way.

PERINO: He is. That is a bad slide.

QUESTION: That says Senate.

PERINO: I know, and it’s the House. That’s why it’s bad.

Watch it:

The reason Congress asked for the 21-day extension is because the White House claimed that the expiration of the PAA undermined America’s national security. Yet despite this fear-mongering, conservatives rejected the extension.

Since that time, congressional Democrats have held a series of bipartisan meetings to work out a solution. White House officials have skipped the meetings. “I don’t understand why the White House hasn’t been more active in pushing the solution they want,” said Sen. John Rockefeller (D-WV). “It’s very strange.” House Republicans have also prevented their staffs from attending the meetings.

Transcript:

QUESTION: Dana, what are the prospects for the Protect America Act from the White House point of view?

PERINO: Well, what’s interesting is, you know, I actually have a slide I can actually bring up, now that you’ve asked. It was almost 21 days ago.

(LAUGHTER)

(CROSSTALK)

PERINO: We’ve been waiting to use this for a couple of days.

(LAUGHTER)

If you remember, it was…

PERINO: About four weeks ago, everyone in this briefing room was asking why President Bush wouldn’t accept a three-week extension.

So, I will take Pete’s seat and I will give him…

(LAUGHTER)

… a lot of trouble. His mother will not be happy.

(LAUGHTER)

But the point of the matter is, they said they needed three more weeks. It’s been nearly three weeks and they haven’t done it.

And so, they’re nowhere near where they were, I don’t think. Except it was interesting last week when Chairman Reyes said on Sunday morning that he thought that they were closer.

We were hoping this week that there would be a vote. And now it appears that they’re going to kick it to maybe next week. So, they wouldn’t have met their three-week deadline anyway.

Oooh, nice work, Dana. You’re a perfect fit for this administration: incompetent at the simplest of tasks and about as alert as a glue sniffing teenager.

  3. gummitch says:

I can’t be sure, but it doesn’t appear to me that Dana is wearing an American flag pin. Is she another damn traitor? Why does she love the terraists?

  4. Bartolo says:

You all are neglecting to give the girl credit for getting Hoyer’s name right.

  5. Uosdwis says:

Did anyone ask her “if you got that wrong, what else have you gotten wrong, hmmmmmmmm??”

  6. ralph the wonder llama says:

So, she’s been waiting to use that slide for a couple of days? Did they not notice the mistake too busy rubbing their hands in gleeful anticipation, or was a couple of days not enough time for the White House staff to fix the text on a Powerpoint slide?

    #5 Uosdwis:

Did anyone ask her “if you got that wrong, what else have you gotten wrong, hmmmmmmmm??”

They wanted to save some time for substantive questions. If she actually answered that, they would have been turning the lights out at the “Whitehouse Six” before she finished….

    Cheers,

  12. ralph the wonder llama says:

Whaddaya wanna bet that cutesy Dana has pissed off some underling with a high-and-mighty attitude, and the underling set her up to look stupid in front of the press corps?

Nah, doesn’t make sense. Who would put forth that kind of effort and take that kind of risk when the odds are pretty damn good every day that cutesy Dana will to embarrass herself anyway.

  17. clb72 says:

Dana, if you don’t agree to a 3-week extension of a deadline and let it pass, it’s stupid to complain that they didn’t do it in 3 weeks. The point is the deadline, not the extension. If you don’t agree to the extension, you have no right to expect they’ll do what you ask by then.

  22. osiris says:

This is the epitome of stupidity and ignorance. To not have proper attibutions on a slide you are making public is appalling and disgraceful.

I think the House shouldn’t even bring this bill to the floor, if they care about the american people and the shaft our constitutional rights have been given by this crime cabal who believe themselves to be above the law.

I’d hang them out to dry. Let them twist (or tryst) in the wind, as they say. If they were actually concerned about ANY lapse in intel gathering, firstly they would have accepted the bill SANS IMMUNITY. That being said, we can now be assured that it has nothing to do with protecting us and everything to do with getting this disgraceful president off the hook. Hell, let the class actions fly and may they all pierce right through to him personally after how he’s singularly damaged this democracy. It would be just desserts.

As for the inability to gather intel, we still do have FISA or did he conveniently forget about those rules???? With FISA he can begin spying immediately and within 72 hours go for the warrant.

Also, as far as his claims about the telecoms NOT cooperating with him in the future, he needs to read the law: It clearly states that when presented with a FISA warrant, the telecoms ABSOLUTELY MUST COMPLY.

There goes all Chimpy’s cards. And just yesterday we have confirmation that the FBI was told to break the law and spy on americans without a proper FISA warrant. National security letters do not replace the FISA laws. In this case, he’s been given the shaft by his legal team on this one.

You’d have thought it would have been corrected since they had it for a couple of days.

What surprises me is that anyone corrected her. They usually just kiss her cute little blond a$$ and sends her off on her merry way.

    Someone’s head is gonna roll.

  25. osiris says:

From the tone and tenor of Airhead’s comments about the obvious error to what appears to be an almost daily routine of someone in high places “throwing the chimp under the bus”, I’d say that he’s all but totally irrelevant at this point. And when enough momentum begins to move on this illegal wiretapping, he may find himself being brought up on charges before he leaves office.

  26. osiris says:

At the very least, the ACLU should sue George W. Bush personally for violating our civil rights.

  31. PRESSmUP says:

    Stop picking on Dana!!!

I think she’s cute. And obviously, that’s her main qualification for this position.

Even though she’s operating in a clue-free environment, she has a future with FOX News. Please don’t screw up her opportunity.

  32. tombaker says:

29 – she does get all the shame and low self-esteem of a regular whore, but she only gets righty sex from her righty husband, so the whores actually have her beat.

  33. MapleStreet says:

Besides all the obvious questions of why, if she had just been waiting to use this slide for a couple of days, no one noticed the gaffe,

I’m wondering why, if it was a legitimate slide, she didn’t use this previously as part of a presser – after all, she controls the agenda for the opening part. There just seems to be a tad of nastiness of her waiting to pull this out (and that she didn’t use it earlier, but waited for someone to ask her, so she could pull it out as if she wasn’t using it in evil glee).

  34. pete says:

The line, between evil and incompetence, has been irrevocably erased.

So Jay Rockefeller can’t understand why they can’t find a solution. Try this one on, Jay. Perhaps the White House is hoping (planning) another attack on our country so Shrub can blame the Democratic Congress and declare martial law. Think about it, Jay. I daresay most of us have.

  41. williamf says:

What a GD ditz! If you want to know about the Bush administration all you have to do is watch the Perino dog and pony show. She is terrible beyond imagination and it’s even possible Bush has her out front at the useless little press briefings in Washington just for yuks. I mean he was tap dancing on the north portico yesterday. Why, why, why does the media even attend these things. It would be nice if all of the media just said the hell with it and they all went somewhere else during the “press briefing.” Tune in next week folks when “Dana the Terrible” tells you how the Congress will be irradicated with bullshit bombs.

Wow, ya think after sitting on that slide and salivating over it for several days, they’d find that glaring boo boo.

Watching this video reminded me of Scarlet O’Hara visiting Rhett Butler (who’s being held in a stable by the Confederates). Scarlet is begging for Rhett’s money and she’s wearing that velvet green frock made from her mother’s curtains…
