In 2005, an “unprecedented 19 reporters” accompanied Condoleezza Rice on her first trip overseas as Secretary of State. Now, however, things have changed. The Washington Post reports that “vastly fewer reporters” joined Rice on her latest trip to the Middle East:
The three wire services–Associated Press, Reuters and Agence-France Presse–are on board. Bloomberg News and National Public Radio took seats. But only three newspapers–The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Washington Times–are on the plane, down from the standard five. And the networks did not even bother to send a camera crew, let alone a correspondent.
The media began losing interest in Rice last year. In mid-2007, every single major newspaper turned down an op-ed by Rice on Lebanon and in September, CBS and NBC declined a White House offer to have Rice appear on their Sunday shows.
Rice?
I enjoy mine with curry………..
March 6th, 2008 at 4:14 pmWell, what can you do with an incompetent lying tool but ignore her?
March 6th, 2008 at 4:15 pmCongrats, MSM. You’re finally catching up to the Condirrelevancy.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:15 pmLet’s be fair, TP — how does this compare with reporters accompanying Madeline Albright overseas? Or Colin Powell?
March 6th, 2008 at 4:15 pmGotta wonder if she can spell
I R R E L E V A N T.
~RHUsseinAlAqbarCerious~
March 6th, 2008 at 4:16 pmI think that if Rice was actually having an effect in the Middle East instead of going there and robotically giving Bushco talking points that everybody ignores, there might be enough news there to capture the interest of the press. But these days, even getting a seat on the “Straight Talk Express” is a more interesting gig.

March 6th, 2008 at 4:18 pmthey SHOULD be covering her….
she’s overseeing the apartheid, genocide and ethnic cleansing that is happening courtesy of their proxy and Israel’s war and subversion of Fatah and betrayal of Hamas.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:18 pmArab countries are to walk away from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if Israel ever officially acknowledges it has nuclear weapons.
Arab states, all of which are signatories to the treaty, have long called for a nuclear-free Middle East and expressed their concern over Israel’s apparent possession of nuclear weapons.
If this did not happen, Arab countries would leave the treaty and not sign any new one until Israel itself joined.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:22 pmShould Dana P. replace Condi as SoState?
Hey, we could have Purina & fried Rice at the table!
…yes, Nancy’s too busy to be at the table…
March 6th, 2008 at 4:22 pmWhat is there to hold their interest? She hasn’t done anything of note. She is an abject failure at the job she was given. On the other hand, it could be that reporters aren’t that interested in shopping for shoes.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:23 pmralph – you raise a fair question on fair and balanced reporter coverage on the two prior SecState, though it is said they ran their department, it didn’t run them, as many argue is the current state at State.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:23 pmJackanory Rice
Middle east peace treaty blah blah blah
Change the record Ms Rice , your a complete waste of time
March 6th, 2008 at 4:25 pmIronic that Obama’s Senior Foreign Policy Advisor is a mid-40s, African-American woman…. named Dr. Rice, Dr. Sandy Rice.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:27 pmIts probably because her ’shuttle diplomacy’ isnt working.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:28 pmIs she becoming irrelevant?
Maybe she could veto something….
March 6th, 2008 at 4:28 pm.
There should at least be ONE reporter following and documenting her activities, even if they undermine our security. This way she can’t default to the trite and true line of the Administration: “I don’t recall.”

March 6th, 2008 at 4:30 pmHow many reporters can you squeeze into a shoe store?
March 6th, 2008 at 4:32 pmWhat she needs is another fake story about her considering a run for office. Her name will be floated for the GOP VP, so then she’ll get some traveling press.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:33 pmthey SHOULD be covering her….
she’s overseeing the apartheid, genocide and ethnic cleansing …

i don’t KNOW enough to repeaat the 2nd part of that sentence,
but i wholeheartedly agree with the rest of your comment…
these criminals need to be watched closely…

Is that what she’s doing? I thought she was asking Abu Mazen for a refund after Fatah botched Iran-Contra 2.0.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:34 pmWhat is there to hold their interest? She hasn’t done anything of note. She is an abject failure at the job she was given. On the other hand, it could be that reporters aren’t that interested in shopping for shoes.
Comment by Bilbo Hussein Baggins — March 6, 2008 @ 4:23 pm
Sorry I didn’t see your shoe reference. But what would they report? It could be like a Seinfeld episode where they watch her do nothing, only it’s not funny.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:34 pmGood Lord, Condi Rice, what a staggering failure on every single issue put before her.
My favorite is that on the morning of 9/11 she was scheduled to fly from DC to NY to give a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations delineating the administration’s belief that China was our number-one threat.
The irony with that one, of course, is that while she and Bush were totally asleep at the wheel and allowed 9-11 to happen, they’ve now allowed China to rise to unprecedented political power while we squander everything we have (or rather, don’t have, since it’s all Republican deficit spending) on the boondoggle of Iraq.
The damage Rice and others have done to America’s role in the world will take decades to recover from.
Oh to get her under oath!!!
March 6th, 2008 at 4:35 pmConsidering the fact that she will not under any circumstances give a straight answer to any question that is asked of her, why in the hell should the reporters keep wasting their time?
March 6th, 2008 at 4:35 pmWay off topic, but just found this and felt absolutely compelled to share.
GOP money missing, party officials say

Comment by ralph the wonder llama — March 6, 2008 @ 4:15 pm
I’m with Ralph Hussein Wonder Llama. A reading of the WaPo story makes it clear that the early numbers were disproportionately huge and that there are perfectly legitimate reasons why they’re much lower now — constrained budgets and all the primaries and caucuses to cover. If she was actually accomplishing anything with all this running around, they’d probably commit more reporters.

March 6th, 2008 at 4:40 pmCondi’s answer to mideast peace talk progress…
‘Well, ummm, you see, ahem, umm, the Palestinians, ummm, well, they have to realize, ummm, ahem, that, Israel, ahem, ahhmm, means business.’
March 6th, 2008 at 4:41 pmWhy would anyone send a woman into the Middle East to do a mans job? It’s a cultural thing.
Comment by Rodham Gin — March 6, 2008 @ 4:39 pm
If all you know about Middle Eastern culture is from Little Green Footballs, yes.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:44 pmSorry I didn’t see your shoe reference. But what would they report? It could be like a Seinfeld episode where they watch her do nothing, only it’s not funny.
Comment by Shayne — March 6, 2008 @ 4:34 pm
It’s not like she’s going to do anything that’s not in complete lockstep message with the White House talking points. Why even put reporters on the plane when they’ll get the exact same story in Foggy Bottom?
March 6th, 2008 at 4:47 pmNot covering her stammering deer in the headlights rationalization of her failure to produce any progress on the peace plan her boss promised by the end of the year is probably a kidness to the administration. Not even the Foxbots could make that look positive. Besides, as the last seven years have proven Republicans don’t do peace.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:53 pmHmmmm. Manolo Blahnik or Christian Louboutin or Salvadore Ferragamo…?
March 6th, 2008 at 4:55 pmWho gives a flying fu*k? Every news outlet in America just repeats whatever the AP says anyways.
March 6th, 2008 at 4:56 pmshe doesn’t mind.

March 6th, 2008 at 5:02 pmThey just got tired of shopping for overpriced shoes while missing the important stories.
March 6th, 2008 at 5:03 pmI dont think Rice is really the story here but the failure of the Bush foreign policy is.
And McSame is expected to continue on that failed course.
March 6th, 2008 at 5:05 pmPoor Condi, sent on a fool’s errand and playing the cards she’s dealt. High card is the six of nothing.
March 6th, 2008 at 5:07 pmbut the failure of the Bush foreign policy is.
Sec of State should influence the POTUS, not the other way around. Like the most successful managers are best at assembling talented role players, Bush is highly unsuccessful in that his appointees are puppets of his, yet he’s NO puppet-master, hence, failure.
March 6th, 2008 at 5:16 pmI never cared for leftover Rice.

March 6th, 2008 at 5:24 pmAh, yes. Condoleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezza Rice — the Rodney Dangerfield of GDumbya’s foreign policy team.

March 6th, 2008 at 5:43 pmOy, Billyboy, yer spellificating is killing me.
YIKES.
March 6th, 2008 at 6:09 pmI’ll go with her. Seriously. And blog it.
This story says as much about the irrelevancy of the MSM as it does the incompetency of this administration and its Secretary of State.
Why isn’t the media traveling with Rice and reporting on what a failure this administration’s foreign policy is?
March 6th, 2008 at 6:15 pmMedia doesn’t have time for Girlfriday Rice. Too busy filing her nails, running errands for Bush, and playing Secretary of State have gotten the media to move on from Rice.
March 6th, 2008 at 6:17 pmThey don’t go with her because she doesn’t accomplish anything worth reporting.
March 6th, 2008 at 6:21 pmI think you’re missing a link here…when did Condi stop being relevant? Think back to when Rice and Cheney were butting heads and what they were butting heads about.
THAT is why Rice is no longer important. Rice now (or then rather) didn’t want Bush to rush into something else headlong, but Cheney wanted his next war. Rice immediately became persona non grata not only to reporters but to many within the admin.
Lesson learned? Do not f**k with the dark lord. Ever. About anything. Period.
March 6th, 2008 at 6:24 pmMaybe they’re finally realising she’s just an incompetent eedjit, and they want to keep their lunches down.
Cheers,
March 6th, 2008 at 6:51 pmThe media began losing interest in Rice last year.

March 6th, 2008 at 7:12 pmWorst Secretary of State Ever?
I’d say so.

You’ve just insulted the 49′ers, Jerry Rice (the smart and motivated Rice), and the entire NFL. Stop it!!!…8-))
March 6th, 2008 at 7:45 pmThis has been done with the White House’s approval.
Since Rice is NOT running for VP, they figured her stature of as prominent black female might compliment Obama’s image, and even soften racial apprehensions against him held by some rural independents and republicans. So now they keep her locked away in the backroom. She still does her job though, overseeing the genocide in the middle east, and such.
March 6th, 2008 at 7:46 pm52. I got carried away. JOE MONTANA FOR SECRETARY OF STATE!

Comment by Bilbo Hussein Baggins — March 6, 2008 @ 4:23 pm
yep – and her most recent failure was another feeble attempt at peace talks between israel and palestine that was immediately followed by a massacre in a jerusalem library by a palestinian gunman….oh and that was followed by thousands taking to the streets gaza and celebrating…top job, rice – you truly are completely useless.
March 6th, 2008 at 8:52 pmWhy would the press be interested in the most ineffective Secretary of State ever.
Rice: Wave, smile at the camera then do nothing.
