Yesterday, the House passed the The Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2007 which “would help end the stigma of mental illness and create greater access for people needing mental health and addiction treatment.”
A new Army mental health report finds that the percentage of troops “reporting depression in Afghanistan was higher than that in Iraq.” Mental health problems in general were higher than that in Iraq, and “mental health problems in general were higher than they had previously been in Afghanistan.”
At the weekly meeting of conservative leaders at the American for Tax Reform, former White House aide Tim Goeglein, who resigned after acknowledging repeated instances of plagiarism, “received three rounds of applause from the packed room, including one standing ovation, as he asked for their forgiveness.”
“The Veterans Affairs Department estimates that on any given night last year, 154,000 veterans were homeless, about a 20 percent decrease from 195,827 in the agency’s 2006 estimate.”
Big industries are waging “an intense lobbying effort to block new, tougher limits on air pollution that is blamed for hundreds of heart attacks, deaths and cases of asthma, bronchitis and other breathing problems.” The groups met with the White House in “a last-ditch effort to keep the health standard unchanged.”
Despite cooperating with the author of new biographical article in Esquire magazine, Centcom commander Adm. William Fallon is now disavowing the piece as “poison pen stuff.” The article — which said that the White House may relieve Fallon of his position as early as this summer — is being discussed at the Pentagon, reports the Washington Post.
“Black Americans still trail whites on such basics as income, education and health,” according to a new study by the National Urban League. The study found that three times as many African-Americans as whites live below the poverty line while African-Americans are twice as likely to be jobless.
Lawyers for Jamie Leigh Jones argued in federal court yesterday that her case should be “tried in court, not settled in private arbitration.” Jones is suing defense contractor KBR over an alleged gang rape she suffered in 2005, but the company insists her contract binds her to settle all claims through arbitration.
And finally: Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) is not known to be fashionable. Last Friday, however, when on a train to Philadelphia with one of his aides, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Schumer joked that he has a French tailor. “His name is Jay-Cay Pennay!” shouted Schumer, giving a faux francophilic pronunciation of JC Penney. Schumer also confirmed that he does all his shopping at “Tarjay,” also known as Target.

How the Spooks Took over the News
The Independent, U.K.
…The Pentagon has now designated “information operations” as its fifth “core competency” alongside land, sea, air and special forces. Since October 2006, every brigade, division and corps in the US military has had its own “psyop” element producing output for local media. This military activity is linked to the State Department’s campaign of “public diplomacy” which includes funding radio stations and news websites.
…This was exposed by the former UN arms inspector Scott Ritter, who describes in his book, Iraq Confidential, how, in London in June 1998, he was introduced to two “black propaganda specialists” from MI6 who wanted him to give them material which they could spread through “editors and writers who work with us from time to time.”

March 6th, 2008 at 9:05 amBaghdad drowning in sewage: Iraqi official
BAGHDAD (AFP) — Baghdad is drowning in sewage, thirsty for water and largely powerless, an Iraqi official said on Sunday in a grim assessment of services in the capital five years after the US-led invasion.
…Sewage is forming a foul lake so large it can be seen “as a big black spot on Google Earth,” said Tahseen Sheikhly, civilian spokesman for the Baghdad security plan…water pipes, where they exist, are so old that it is not possible to pump water at a sufficient rate to meet demands — leaving many neighbourhoods parched.
A sharp deficit of 3,000 megawatts of electricity adds to the woes of residents, who are forced to rely on neighbourhood generators to light up their lives and heat their homes…Insurgency, sectarian violence and vandalism since the US-led invasion in March 2003 had further ravaged services in the capital, he added.

And from the link in the homeless veterans item:
“Obviously, war is not a good thing, so we clearly expect we will see some of these veterans,” Dougherty said. “The difference for us is we’re hoping we’re going to see them early, we’re going to be able to do good preventative health care with them and they’re going to get on with their lives and never face homelessness again.”
———————————————-
It’s good news that the number of homeless veterans has dropped, and the VA is to be commended for their good work in this area. Of course, a great deal of work remains. It looks like we will be getting a flood of veterans from both Iraq and Afghanistan that may be ill-equipped to function adequately in our society and will be at high risk for homelessness.
Fortunately, the VA seems to be aware of this problem, and hopefully will be able to rescue many.

Before that, there were so few of them, that we just referred to them as ‘hobos’ or ‘bums’. (I’m not saying that those names we kind or deserved, but as least in our country we didn’t have such an abundance that we had to find a new ‘class’ for them: rich, middle-class, poor…and homeless.

Of course, the $250,000 question is…why were the neoconservatives really applauding Goeglein? For make no mistake — Americans for Tax Reform is a neoconservative group (Grover Norquist is the founder and president — need I say more?) Were they applauding him because he acknowledged that what he did was wrong and asked for forgiveness? Based on the conduct of most neoconservatives (since talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words), I’d say “hardly”. More likely, they applauded him because he showed himself willing to use unethical tactics to further their cause. I’m inclined to suspect that Goeglein’s apology was for getting caught — not for having done something wrong.

Yet even John Batchelor, the author of the linked article, said this:

But don’t let a lack of evidence get in the way, right? One doesn’t need to back up one’s accusations these days. Conflation is the name of the game. This is the same reason why so much is made of Obama’s middle name.

STOP THE PRESSES!!!
March 6th, 2008 at 9:58 amRegarding the NAFTA smear on Obama:
According to CBC, all the details were wrong. Canada contacted the campaigns… And, most damning, they are now admitting that the memo at the heart of the controversy “may not accurately reflect what they were told”.
…According to CBC, this scandal was manufactured out of whole cloth. Goolsbee said something consistent with Obama’s official position – that he wanted protections added, but it wasn’t going to be a fundamental change or revocation of NAFTA, and that Obama was not a protectionist. This was morphed somewhat going into the memo, and now the embassy admits they “may have misrepresented the Obama advisor”.
Even after the memo misrepresented Obama, the Harper government took it a step further and then leaked a completely fantastic version of the story to the press.
This whole thing is clever maneuvering on the part of the Harper government to bolster McCain by sowing dissent among Democrats.
A lot has been written about this scandal. The sensational misrepresentation of the original CTV story was shocking. But now CBC has cleared the air, with the final note from the embassy that they “may have misrepresented the Obama advisor”. In the end, there’s nothing to the story but air. It all boiled down to a memo, which was far less dramatic in content than the first story that ran, and now they are even disclaiming the accuracy of the memo.
In short, people have been duped. With the memo disclaimed, there is nothing left to support this story.

Sorry, Insurance companies don’t deny claims just for the principal. If a policy does not cover something, the company can’t just pay for it as if a company is to do this, it would essentially be required to do this for every single policy holder.
If policies provide more coverage then premiums must go up. If premiums go up, then people start complaining.

One must ask the question of our friendly troll Gigi: does she raise these scurrilous allegations of Sen. Obama because she seeks to rid all politics of nefarious influences, no matter how insignificant?
If so, bravo for her, I say.
However, if that’s the case, she seems to have a bit of a lazy eye when it comes to her own party. I don’t recall many times — no, I take that back — I don’t recall EVER when she raised such allegations as these against a Republican, like, say… John McCain… despite a much greater accumulation of evidence.
I find this curious. Could it be that Gigi is not REALLY concerned with principle (as she amply demonstrated on yesterday’s ThinkFast) and is in fact just a partisan hack troll?
Is it irresponsible to raise this question? It is irresponsible not to.

no, I am not saying that, though to say that all companies do that would be quite a generalization. However any company which willingly denies coverage for something which is covered by the policy can be sued for “bad faith” and subject to punitive damages.
Why are people surprised that when they buy insurance from a sub-standard company, they end up with sub-standard insurance?

U.S. troops buy own gear for safety, style in battle
“The traditional Army credo is that it’s guts that win the glory – not fancy long-johns or Oakley sunglasses. But that old-school thinking is wicking away like perspiration through Gore-Tex as US soldiers today go beyond military-issue battle dress uniforms in favor of top-of-the-line gear to help them get home in one piece – and look sharp, too.
One reason, critics say, is that military procurement, especially of life-saving equipment, is still too slow. Quietly, however, the Pentagon – with the Army leading the charge – has begun bypassing rigid procurement rules, loosening uniformity requirements, and even spearheading technical innovations in gear, ranging from flame-retardant shirts to low-infrared signature zippers.”
“To some critics, the sight of soldiers buying their own battle gear symbolizes a divide between frontline grunts and rear echelon procurement officers who may never have seen battle. Rep. Gene Taylor (D) of Mississippi told the House Armed Services Committee last week that supplies such as body armor and uparmored Humvees “[have] taken entirely too long” to get to frontline troops.
In some cases, charity groups have stepped in to help. Operation Helmet, founded by Bob Meaders of Montgomery, Texas, shipped special helmet liners to soldiers to replace what many soldiers said were poorly designed helmet pads issued by the Army and the Marines. Just as Operation Helmet thought its work was done late last year, more requests came in from troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“The Army is planning a $20 billion future combat system, and they can’t provide boots that don’t wear out,” says Roger Charles, editor of DefenseWatch, an investigative website that advocates on behalf of frontline soldiers. “There’s no priority for taking care of relatively mundane items where most people would think, ‘Gosh, that’s so simple. Why don’t they have the best boots, the best uniforms, the best helmets, and the best flak jackets?’ “”

Interesting.
Gigi is “providing balance” when she unearths and magnifies discredited allegations against Democrats. She’s obviously just as concerned with wrongdoing among Republicans, but we’ll have to take her word for that, since we’ve never seen any statement of dismay from her in any thread about such a topic.
In fact, not even in this one, which had a mention of another Bush White House staffer who resigned because of ethical lapse — plagiarizing in articles he wrote for his hometown paper; no words of outrage from Gigi thus far. No disappointment that fellow Republicans gave him a standing ovation.
Odd.
I could have sworn that it was just more evidence of Gigi’s partisan hackery and lack of principles. But apparently not. She’s providing “balance”.

Why indeed? Considering the price tag of this war so far, I would think we were giving all our our soldiers gold-plated armor to wear. How is it we can spend so much and not give them the best?
In World War II, everybody on the homefront sacrificed so our military could have the best of everything to fight the war. Bush has not asked Americans to sacrifice anything (except our constitutional rights, of course) — instead, he’s telling us to go shopping.
I think I could give up my clothing allowance for a few months to ensure a U.S. soldier is properly outfitted. The problem is, the money would probably just go to Blackwater mercenaries instead.

CAYMAN ISLANDS – Kellogg Brown & Root, the nation’s top Iraq war contractor and until last year a subsidiary of Halliburton Corp., has avoided paying hundreds of millions of dollars in federal Medicare and Social Security taxes by hiring workers through shell companies based in this tropical tax haven.
When Texas pipe-fitter Danny Langford applied for unemployment compensation after being let go by Service Employers International Inc., he was rejected, he was told, because he worked for a foreign company.
More than 21,000 people working for KBR in Iraq – including about 10,500 Americans – are listed as employees of two companies that exist in a computer file on the fourth floor of a building on a palm-studded boulevard here in the Caribbean. Neither company has an office or phone number in the Cayman Islands.

“Having paid only casual attention to it in the past, I spent several hours yesterday morning reading every “Rezko” article I could find in an attempt to understand as much as possible about the allegations. The point isn’t that there is no credible evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of Obama, although that’s unquestionably true. It’s far beyond that. There aren’t even any theoretical allegations or suggestions as to what he might have done wrong at all. The person who is accused of wrongdoing is Tony Rezko, in matters inarguably having nothing to do with Obama. Nobody claims otherwise (although many try to imply otherwise).”

By DEREK ROSE, Associated Press
NEW YORK – A small bomb caused minor damage to an empty military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, shaking guests in hotel rooms high above “the crossroads of the world.”
Police blocked off the area to investigate the explosion, which occurred at about 3:45 a.m. No one was injured. The blast left a gaping hole in the front window and shattered a glass door, twisting and blackening its metal frame.
In October 2005, a group of activists who call themselves the Granny Peace Brigade rallied there against the Iraq war. Eighteen activists, most of them grandmothers with several in their 80s and 90s, were later acquitted of disorderly conduct.
Nah! They’re blaming those troop-hating 90 year old grannies on bikes!!!

Wow frodo, to think you refrained from making a comment about my screen name for a whole day. I’m so proud of you.
And when did I say it was OK to be raped and kidnapped? Never said it nor will I. However, I did say if she entered into a contract she should be held to the terms of the contract. I do not believe the rapists entered into any contract, so I imagine she would be free to sue the actual people who raped her. I believe the rapists should be tried for their crime, though, lets face it, they likely never will be.
fred,
March 6th, 2008 at 11:48 amwe’re not talking about a poor uneducated homeowner who was swindled into a loan. We’re talking about a presumably highly educated Republican who was willing to risk her life working for, of all the companies, the absolute worst company in the world, in, of all places, a war zone. I seriously doubt she was duped into signing this contract and I am postive she was making a lot of money. However, before everyone jumps on me, I’m not justifying the rape by any means and I am not talking about the criminal aspect of this case. I’m simply saying she entered into a willing contract and should be bound to it.

I’m just confused. As Bilbo pointed out this should be criminal. How does her contract have anything to do with it at all? KBR is implying that it can’t be looked into at all because of her contract…..how can that be?
Is it possible to sign a contract with a company that excluded you from prosecuting a violent criminal act by employees of that company? Would it be legal for a company to propose such a thing?
Arbitration is a joke, right? I mean, how do you resolve this financially?

March 6th, 2008 at 12:06 pmoh boy… more fuel for THIS fire…
which i had no problem believing was a problem caused by vaccines…
just recently i read that THAT was being discredited…
now this:
ALISON YOUNG, ” Ga. girl helps link autism to childhood vaccines”, Atlanta Journal – Constitution, March 6, 2008,
Link: http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/health/stories/2008/03/06/autism_0306.html
In a move autism family advocates call unprecedented, federal health officials have concluded that childhood vaccines contributed to symptoms of the disorder in a 9-year-old Georgia girl.
While government officials continue to maintain that vaccines don’t cause autism, advocates say the recent settlement of the girl’s injury case in a secretive federal vaccine court shows otherwise.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has concluded the family of Hannah Poling of Athens is entitled to compensation from a federal vaccine injury fund, according to the text of a court document in the case. The amount of the family’s award is still being determined.
The language in the document does not establish a clear-cut vaccine-autism link. But it does say the government concluded that vaccines aggravated a rare underlying metabolic condition that resulted in a brain disorder “with features of autism spectrum disorder.”

One must wonder what evidence at all does Gigi have that leads her to think Obama has something to answer for in this case?
Is there some specific allegation of wrongdoing on Obama’s part?
Because, if not, this campaign of Gigi’s looks an awful lot like a Partisan Fishing Expeditionâ„¢, right?

ummm… the one Senator about whom you complain about “lying when she was carpetbagging to NY in 2000″ didn’t lie about not running for president. She served that complete six-year term without said run. She was re-elected in 2006. By an overwhelming margin.

You know Fred, you bring up a good point. At this time, a lot of this is speculation. I don’t know what her contract said and I can only imagine a contract to complete work in a war zone would be rather specific – the incredible dangers encountered working in Iraq would be so far out of the ordinary that I can’t see how typical employment law/regulations (like OSHA) could feasibly be applied.
Also, typically, the rules of law which would apply are those where the damages were incurred (in this instance Baghdad), however, I would also assume her contract would dictate exactly which state’s law would apply in the case of a dispute.
Though if she is successful in rescinding her contract, then KBR would have an argument US law shouldn’t even apply, which if you read the link appears to be the case.

Incorrect sir. She said in no uncertain terms in 2000 that she was not running for Senate to build street cred for a presidential run. She was challenged often by her own party that she was using us as a catapult for a presidential bid.
I don’t care that she put it off until 08. She was called on this often, and lied to us with a straight face.
I don’t care that she was reelected by a large margin either. She’s a democratic senator from NY. She isn’t going to lose. The republicans put up joke candidates in 00 and 06. (Lazio came through late in 00 after Guiliani bailed out)
Hillary sucks. She’s completely worthless to NYS. If she gets the nomination, I’m voting Nader (dont worry, it won’t help Mccain electorally)
