On his radio show today, conservative talker Glenn Beck mocked ThinkProgress for noting the fact that he asked controversial pastor John Hagee this week if Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) “might be the Anti-Christ.” Beck says it was not “a serious question” because he was “laughing all the way through it,” but it was “so very predictable” that he would be criticized for it:
Well, here’s the best part, because what picked this up originally was, I don’t even know, ThinkProgress. It’s a blog. ThinkProgress, yes. Let’s ThinkProgress. Do you know Progressive has “Progress” in it? It must be good. ThinkProgress is the first that picked this up on the blogs. They’re like, Glenn Beck thinks that maybe…
Watch it:
Beck may think he was telling a joke, but we doubt that Obama was “laughing all the way through it.”

March 7th, 2008 at 5:39 pmOn the offchance that Beck may actually visit the site I would like to welcome him.
Beck, shove a big stick up your ass.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:39 pmGlen I’m sure your mother was laughing all the way through you conception, it may have been the roofies your dad gave her, or it may just mean your entire existence is a joke…
March 7th, 2008 at 5:41 pmSo, then, Glenny boy, the implication is that you consider the whole subject of the anti-christ, and by inference the christ, to be just a joke?
March 7th, 2008 at 5:42 pmWell, then, I guess you have something in common with many progressives.
Shall we send you a bumper sticker?
Laugh, and you can say any epithet you want. That’s Beck’s wide stance.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:42 pmYeah, well, we all KNOW Ben Gleck is a joke. A bad, unfunny, bigoted, moronic joke, with a stale punchline that makes me want to puke. On his shoes.
There.

March 7th, 2008 at 5:44 pmHey Glenn-
I wrote a limerick! LOL
There once was a drunk from Mt. Vernon
Who got more fame than he was deservin’
He talked out his ass
’til his time was long past
Come November he’ll be famous for squirmin’
ROTFL- just “laughing all the way through it” LOL
March 7th, 2008 at 5:44 pmI’m asking if Beck is a mentally unbalanced drunk, substance abuser and nutty Mormon….and I’m not laughing, I’m serious.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:44 pmPeople should take a look at who this guy really is and what his history is……..and what he is actually getting paid for.

If Glen Feck(less) didn’t care and laughed his way through the interview, then why does he care what his critics think?
.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:46 pmDoes anyone, except for the retarded right, even listen to this blithering idiot?
March 7th, 2008 at 5:47 pmBeck is nuts, plain and simple. Why he is still on the air is mind-boggling.
That’s why they call it conservative radio…….they are conserving intelligence.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:48 pmLooks like ThinkProgress has made the grade. If the bigot Beck has to speak ill of ThinkProgress, then he must be afraid. He must be very afraid.

March 7th, 2008 at 5:49 pmWell, here’s how I view Beck (snicker, chuckle). I think that Glen (light laughter, snort) is nothing more than a turd with lips (ha, ha, ha)!
Now, did I mean that or not?
March 7th, 2008 at 5:49 pmBeck laughed through it like Bush has snickered through the last 7 years.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:49 pmThese neocons really think they are funny but they are too stupid to come up with real humor. Beck needs new writers.
~Cats Hussein r Flyfishn

March 7th, 2008 at 5:53 pmBut Glen, in case you do come here and read the comments you really are dumber than a box of rocks and the only reason people talk about what you say is comic relief. You are so insignificant that nobody really cares whether you’re joking or serious, you sound like a total moron either way.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:54 pmHey Beck-head, here’s a real insult for you….
You’re Frank M.
There, take that Beck-head.

March 7th, 2008 at 5:55 pmJeez — Beck feels compelled to assert that it “wasn’t a serious question”?
What does it say about Glenn Beck that it has to even be considered?
A little tip, Glenn — perhaps if you didn’t challenge US Congressmen of Muslim faith to prove to you that they’re not working for our enemies, your “comedy” routines might not fall so flat.

March 7th, 2008 at 5:55 pmI have to admit that I listen to Beck . . . and Limpballs and Insanity from time to time. I love to listen to them twist in the wind and piss and moan. I think it’s how I compensate for not watching NASCAR events — you know, we all like to observe ridiculous pastimes once in awhile just so we’ll catch the pile-up when it happens. And these rant-jockeys have sure been crashing and burning a lot lately.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:58 pmSounds like Becky’s got her frilly magic underwear all bunched up, wedgie style. Feels good, don’t it Gleck?
March 7th, 2008 at 5:58 pmBeck was making fun of the people who think Obama is the anti-Christ. That’s why he was laughing, that’s why the question was a joke. The vid’s on this website, someone here’s got to have actually watched it. Right?

Wow, you are a brave person. I can’t listen to any of them for more than 5 minutes without feeling a compulsion to either throw the radio out the window or kick in the TV screen. I have the same reaction every time I hear Bush’s voice. For the TV, I am fortunate in that I don’t watch anything I haven’t pre-recorded so I can fast forward and not have to listen to Bush.
March 7th, 2008 at 6:07 pmIf Glennnnn saw me interviewing Rachel Maddow, and I asked her whether she thought w was Charles Manson, what would he have had to say?
“Glennnnnn….his name runs on just like his mouth does.”

March 7th, 2008 at 6:19 pmCongrats TP! If Beck denounces it, it MUST be GOOD. Keep up the good work. (:-D)
March 7th, 2008 at 6:29 pmWhy is it that the Right seems to think that insults qualify as jokes?
This doesn’t work in real life.
“Mrs. Pritzker, I’d like to introduce Glenn Beck.”
“Pleased to meet you. Boy, you’re fat! And that perfume stinks–unless it’s you!”
“ONLY KIDDING!”
(Q. What happens to Mr. Beck in this situation?)
March 7th, 2008 at 6:30 pmThere is a characteristic that all good jokes share, Beck.
They are funny.
Therefore, you did not tell a joke.
March 7th, 2008 at 6:42 pmAs incredibly painful as it was I actually listened to that clip. That’s the longest I’ve ever been able to listen to him in one clip.
That guy is such a jerk it’s not even close to funny.
He said that he gets a lot of emails and that a lot of them think Obama’s the anti-christ or something to that effect. Just by saying that he’s putting that seed in weak people’s minds and he knows it.
What a chucklehead!!

March 7th, 2008 at 7:04 pmAhh. A joke! Funny, that’s exactly what Glenn Beck is!
The problem with this clown is that he’s a stand up comedian rather than a news reporter. Headline News would be better served by hiring a serious journalist to read the news rather than a hate mongering comedian.

Your too predictable.
March 7th, 2008 at 11:04 pmGlenn Beck is like Jackass, sort of. He can’t perform outrageous stunts and isn’t funny. So he has to resort to saying outrageously ridiculous things to get attention and maybe some viewers. Whether or not he’s serious is irrelevant. It’s that CNN (the most trusted name in news) has to hire someone like that and have a show like that to get ratings.
I have a novel idea for CNN to get ratings. REPORT THE NEWS in a non-spin, truthful manner. People love scandal and you could have the coup of the century because FOX wouldn’t be able to do the truth about Bush and Cheney, et al. For example, ‘Rove implicated in obstruction of justice in former Alabama governor, Don Siegelman’s trial. Cheney being investigated for fraud in KBR and Halliburton no-bid contracts. Conservative mouthpiece, Ann Coulter, was caught in the back seat of her car with young boy. Rush Limbaugh arrested for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. President Bush mocks Constitution in speech today.
Do some simple investigating. Do some simple following up. Hammer on these people and their minions and facilitators. Someone always talks. Don’t you get it?! People would watch this stuff 24-7 if you would ever desire to take the lead for once! Either you’re complicit or you’re bumbling idiots happy just to keep receiving your big bloated paychecks and stand for nothing.
March 7th, 2008 at 11:09 pmDon’t you just love it, righties say the most outrageous things and “it’s all a joke” or “I was just joking”. He’s a coward.
March 8th, 2008 at 8:48 amI for one believe that mean-spirited “humor’ such as this is nearly always a form of emotional guerilla warfare and often represents he true feelings of the people who use it more accurately than they are willing to admit. However, even if Beck’s comment was truly just a joke, it wasn’t in the least bit funny. On the contrary, it was hostile and tasteless in the extreme — and he deserves to be raked over the coals for it. After all, what would his reaction have been if a left-wing commentator such as Randi Rhodes had suggested that Bush or McCain might be the Antichrist? Does anyone here believe for one second that Beck or any other right-wing commentator would let it pass or laugh it off as just a joke? By no means — they’d be far more likely to descend on that person en masse like a plague of locusts and vilify that person for days, if not weeks, on end.

********************************************
Personally, I don’t listen to any of these people because I don’t think that all this backbiting serves any positive purpose — all it does is make both sides angry at each other and less willing to come up with some way to solve the problems of this country in a way which both sides can accept (provided that’s even possible, and I’m not entirely confident that it is).
However, I also believe in fairness — and I know from personal experience that sometimes you have to fight fire with fire and that sometimes you don’t gain anything by playing fair when other people are playing dirty. I grant you that what Rhodes did was a cheap shot — but when people like Beck, Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh, and O’Reilly agree to stop taking cheap shots themselves and start participating in more civilized discourse, then I’ll be more than happy to tell Rhodes to put a sock in it…but not until then. If they don’t have to shut up, neither does she.

Agreed…but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to put up with it.
Are you suggesting that perhaps our own government is spurring this on? After all, the sources which you’ve quoted primarily refer to the age-old tactic of “divide and conquer” in reference to an outside enemy — but this is something that we’re doing to ourselves of our own free will rather than something that an outside enemy (strictly speaking) is doing to us, which would almost suggest that we’re trying to destroy ourselves. However, when you consider that an increasing number of Americans are unhappy with both Democrats and Republicans, one is at least occasionally inclined to wonder if the government might not be using the same strategy behind the scenes in order to keep us loyal to the two-party system so that both Democrats and Republicans can maintain their stranglehold on the governing process? Lots of other countries have more than two influential parties, after all…
March 8th, 2008 at 11:37 amIt is among the tenets of Mormonism that Jesus Christ is not the literal Son of God. They see Jesus as merely a human being. Hence they do not qualify as a “Christian” religion. If you deny the divinity of Jesus you are not a Christian. So for Beck to make a joke of Jesus Christ is explained by the tenets that he ascribes to. That it is disrespectful of true Christian believers is without question. But since he prescribes to a false religion one can expect no less. Thank our lucky stars that Romney is out of the race, otherwise we be dealing with more of this.

In hindsight, I think I’m more inclined to lay my suspicions at the feet of corporations — especially since they’re the ones who own the media. However, there’s no doubt in my mind that our governing officials are accessories to this considering the fact that many of them are (at least metaphorically speaking — perhaps even literally in McCain’s case!) in bed with corporate interests.
I came across a very good video segment on YouTube the other day of a speech by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about why he believes that corporations have become a problem in this country. The speech is unfortunately broken up into several segments which must be viewed piecemeal — but I was quite impressed and agree wholeheartedly with many of the sentiments he expressed. Perhaps it’s simply a side-effect of the fact that so many of my psychology professors were Freudians — but as I said in an earlier post, I firmly believe that a lot of mean-spirited “humor” is actually intended (even if only unconsciously) as a form of emotional guerrilla warfare, a way of displaying hostility in passive-aggressive fashion so that the person can avoid taking responsibility for and facing the consequences of their own hostility by saying “I was only joking.” Personally, I don’t think that Beck, Coulter, et al. are joking at all…I think that deep down, perhaps even without fully acknowledging it themselves, they’re filled with a tremendous amount of hostility which would get them kicked off the air if they acknowledged it openly — especially Coulter, who’s been quoted as saying that the only way to make your point with a liberal is to use a baseball bat. Yeah — advocating aggravated assault against people who don’t agree with your opinions is so very funny…NOT.

hahahah. those flaghumping @sshats quoted me, sarcastically calling me “enlightened”
hey you neaderthallic fetushugging fl@gfookers this unelightened guy is going to make sure alot of your heroes end up exposed and behind bars some day very soon..you’ve got my word on that
March 9th, 2008 at 6:39 amBeck’s claim here is that Olbermann is simply re-reporting what Media Matters reported, which was re-reporting was Thinkprogress had reported the previous day — and that Olbermann’s doesn’t play the audio which shows that the question “clearly” wasn’t intended to be taken seriously.
In exactly what alternate parrellel dimension of unrealty such a statement about our next potential President is “Funny” - I don’t know.
Beck was indeed laughing as he made the statment, not because it was funny - but simply because he *thought* it was funny which are too entirely different things, and that is really the point the Beck will never get.
Whether seriously or not, he did make the suggestion - he did not make any real attempt to make it clear in the transcript that he wasn’t making the suggestion seriously - he then went on the predict that Thinkprogress and Media Matters would pick up his comments and report them seriously and there we find Beck’s true goal.
This is a game the Louis Farrakhan loves to play. Make an outrageous statement that can be easily taken out of context, then predict that your “Enemies” will deliberatly misrepresent what you said, and then when they begin to quote and condemn you start proclaiming …”See..see… I don’t you so!”
Glen Beck, the Louis Farrakhan of CNN.
March 9th, 2008 at 12:58 pmPost #12 “If Glen Feck(less) didn’t care and laughed his way through the interview, then why does he care what his critics think?”
He doesn’t, that’s why he was making fun of people like you.
Post #13 “Does anyone, except for the retarded right, even listen to this blithering idiot?
Beck is nuts, plain and simple. Why he is still on the air is mind-boggling.”
Yea, his radio show is #3 in the country and his tv show is the fastest growing show on any news outlet. Sorry.
Post #15 “Looks like ThinkProgress has made the grade. If the bigot Beck has to speak ill of ThinkProgress, then he must be afraid. He must be very afraid.”
AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Post #45 “Uh Cam, bud, you must have mistook us for people who give a shit about Beck.”
Which is why you all have made well over 100 responses to his ONE joking question? C’mon man. Make all the back-handed comments you want, you’re still reacting to what he said. Just don’t sit there and say you all don’t care about what he says or does. you obviously do enough to come in here and comment on it.
The rest of you all sound like annoyed 3rd graders. “No Mr. Beck, YOU’RE a joke!” Wow, clever. He says he wasn’t serious, and if you watched him ask the question, there’s no way you can’t see he’s kidding. but I mean really, at least have a better response than calling him a turd or whatever names you can call him.
Finally, post #103 First, Beck was serious when he said Olberman was just repeating what this blog and Media Matters said about him. He didn’t play the audio or the tv footage because he knew it’s obvious that Beck wasn’t serious. Second, the left can yell all the insulting names that they want but Beck can’t make fun of a question about Obama in this way? Lighten up. third, Beck understands why he thought it was funny which is EXACTLY why he even made mention of it, to show what stupid question it is. This part of your post I take exception to; “he did not make any real attempt to make it clear in the transcript that he wasn’t making the suggestion seriously”. THAT’S EXACTLY THE REASON WHY HE MEMTIONED IT AGAIN AT ALL. He said again how he wasn’t serious, and he said on his radio show the DAY AFTER the tv interview question that there will be people like Media Matters that will think the question was serious. Turns out, he was right on the money.
March 10th, 2008 at 7:13 pmNo Levity? Beck was joking, his explanation on his show March 10, 2008 played the actual question and answer, it was asked in jest, the conversation was clearly not serious, but you had to actually be there, and not take your news from a blog, that created a news story, that created a TV story, that … well, you got the idea.
No problem with some being offended, there are many humorless liberals (well, humorless unless it’s a liberal doing a joke about a non-liberal) but this collection of tex and TV tirades and hate messages isn’t fact based, it’s all emotional.
Are you offended that Beck uses sarcasm (so does Olberman) yet think liberal sarcasm is funny (Daily show, Late night talk shows, etc.). Why is it that only liberals can use sarcasm?
This is why Ann Coulter notes that liberalism is a religion, and liberals are believers, and anyone who isn’t a believer should be killed (in the press, on blogs, etc.) Is this what liberals really believe, is liberalism that intolerant and humorless?
Wake up, all this hate and misunderstanding produces nothing but more hate and misunderstanding. Lighten up, learn to listen, and be wary of things you read on blogs, or hear from late night comedians or Keith Olberman (a lefty to the core).

March 10th, 2008 at 9:12 pmThe right-wing expects everyone too stupid to know context and truth, so they have to ’splain it to us.
Beck wasn’t joking, he’s one of those “Book of Revelations” Mormon whack-jobs.
Asking about the anti-Christ is par for his course.
Beck wasn’t joking here either…
BECK (voice-over): Is the apocalypse almost upon us?
REV. PAT ROBERTSON, “700 CLUB”: The Bible does indicate such a time will happen in the end of time, and could this be it? It might be.
BECK: Are the cataclysmic events of 9/11, Katrina, tsunami, famine and the threat of global pandemic signs we`re living in the end times?
One world government, one world economy, one world vision. Are we creeping even closer to the Book of Revelations` countdown to doomsday? And does an age-old prophecy foretell a Russian-Iranian alliance against Israel as well as a nuclear showdown? Apocalypse now?
We`ll search for answers with Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, the authors of the wildly successful “Left Behind” series and acclaimed author Joel Rosenberg.
Tonight, honest questions about the end of days for the full hour.

March 11th, 2008 at 2:52 amDid any of you people actually watch this clip? It was a total joke! He doesn’t actually think that Obama is the anti-christ. He was referring to others who have called Obama the anti-christ and making fun of them for it.

I have just scrolled though, and tried my best to digest, 107 comments, while holding high my Diogenesian lamp (it’s actually a Pak-Lite, but hey, it’s 2008).
All the while I’ve been patiently seeking the truth, I have, truth be told, been diligently seeking truth-seekers (and I mean true truth-seekers) as well, of any and every stripe (liberal, conservative, progressive, regressive, menthol, and sugar free). I perused 103 entries before encountering any true substance beyond the sheer corrosive vitriol that comprises most of them.
I see many references to Mr. Beck as a drunk, a joke, a bad, unfunny bigot, a stale, dumb, hateful, preening, effeminate, vile, mentally unbalanced, nutty, feckless, blithering idiot, a Grand Wizard of the KKK (!) and… oh yes, my personal favorite: “a turd with lips.” There are some less insulting references to the man as a “Neocon” (as Inigo Montoya observed, “I don’t think that word means what you think it means”), a Mormon (true, although the poster seems hazy on the doctrine), and a hemorrhoid sufferer (also true, and it seems inevitable… perhaps obligatory… that some of us must go there). What those references lack, however, is a point… beyond “Well what do you expect from a _________?”
In fact, all that most everybody seems to be saying is “HOW DARE HE?!” Here and there, posters like Cameron stick their heads above the battlements and request some actual dialogue on the subject, only to be labelled “trolls,” and have brickbats lobbed at them by the friendly neighborhood Progressive Thinkers. Then the “conversation” goes back to general consensus that Glenn is The Worst Person In The World, studded with little gems like the limerick about which the funniest thing is the attempt to rhyme Mount Vernon with “deservin’.” Seriously folks, the Algonquin Club, this ain’t. Nevertheless, I slogged on through the frothy-mouthed slurry, wondering just exactly what this man has done to merit this level of sheer, artery-busting hatred.
Let’s see…
He poked fun at the loosely-shingled religious nuts (always unquestionably fair game for the likes of Stewart, Colbert, Maher and Franken) who see every political heavyweight as a potential player in a New Testament End-Time Showdown. Then, reflecting upon the disturbing political stance that holds the speaker totally responsible for the listener’s gross misunderstanding, he voiced the opinion that the Media Machine might try to grind him in their grisly gears through just such a convenient misreading.
That he predicted what would transpire to such an exact degree came as a surprise, in my opinion, as evidenced by his producer’s amazed laughter. (Which, when heard through a haze of antipathy, I suppose might be described as “chimping”… though that seems a bit childish, nesty pass?) I know I was surprised, anyway, and amused to boot. What I was not, however, is consumed with such incredibly disproportionate rage as I have witnessed here today.
I will gladly discuss this further with anyone who is willing to have a rational conversation, and I truly welcome the refutation of any single point that I have made here. What I expect, however, is a smattering of rudely-worded personal speculations as to my I.Q., manhood, or method of potty training. I’ll shut up now, and see which way it goes. Any predictions?
March 13th, 2008 at 6:16 pmI predict mostly silence.
My question to you dddrum is this; how is it that the leberals and liberal media has become so darn predictable? And do they even realize that they’re so transparent?
March 15th, 2008 at 7:59 pmI think that insofar as the Internet has helped the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy open the Liberal playbook for all to behold, and considering that said playbook seems to be more of a pamphlet… well, I’d say the jig is up, except that some kneejerk brickhead would probably call me racist. Let me say instead that I believe the Kitchen Light of Truth has started a massive skittering scurry back underneath the Refrigerator that is the DNC… and it has only just begun.
(Thanks, Al Gore!)
March 15th, 2008 at 11:51 pmWell said.
March 18th, 2008 at 10:35 amdddrum stands in the doorway, wearing a bemused expression, head cocked, as though waiting for… oh, say, a shoe to drop. He glances at his watch. Three days, he seems to be thinking. He looks up again.

DDDRUM
Hello? Hello?
He shrugs, switches off the light as he pushes through the door, which swings both ways.
Exeunt

March 21st, 2008 at 12:45 pmUh quite frankly it looked like Beck was making fun of people who called Obama the Antichrist. Why would you get mad at him for that?
