In December, EPA administrator Stephen Johnson overruled agency staff in order to reject California’s strict emissions standards for automobiles. Yesterday, House Democrats introduced legislation to overturn his decision. The EPA has “said no to the states. They’ve said no to their own scientists. They’ve said no to common sense,” said Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) in a press conference yesterday. “It’s time for EPA to lead, follow, or get out of the way.”
UPDATE: Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) introduced a similar measure in the Senate.

March 7th, 2008 at 11:07 amSurely the Democrats can’t be standing up on an Issue! Surely they can’t be serious. Why next thing you know they’ll actually start acting as if they have actual spines!

EPA… Enforcing Pollution Agency
March 7th, 2008 at 11:09 amWe all know how this plays out:
Bush installs a lobbyist, or former industry insider, who issues campaign-donor-friendly directives;
Congress steps in, and passes legislation defining specific rules and regulations;
Bush uses a signing statement to nullify congress’ legislation.
Both sides use the issue for fundraising.

March 7th, 2008 at 11:21 amI sense a strongly worded letter coming on.
March 7th, 2008 at 11:23 amThe Republicans amuse me. They are all about the rights of states to decide things for themselves — UNLESS it’s going to negatively impact big business or other campaign contributors. Then they start scream for federal mandates.
And I think Barfly nailed this particular situation.
March 7th, 2008 at 11:25 amBarfly got it in one. I mean why bother solving a problem when you can use it to raise cash?
March 7th, 2008 at 11:33 am“It’s time for [_____] to lead, follow, or get out of the way.â€
An ironic statement from any Democrat in today’s political climate.
Impeachment hearings…..anyone…?

March 7th, 2008 at 11:36 amThe “States” can do whatever the hell they want in reality. The constitution has no wording that this Federal agency could trump a states decision. Heck if they so wanted they could secede from the union altogether. And we’ve alady read here on thinkprogress how Stephen Jonson folded like a lawn chair when W and Sith Lord Cheney barked at him.
March 7th, 2008 at 11:37 amJust another example of how this criminal administration stacks the deck for their corporate big oil big energy buddies.
Heck Cali should enact the law anyways and tell the white house and the EPA where to stick it.
Impeachment hearings…..anyone…?

I keep asking the same question, H.Z., to my so-called elected officials that we in Virginia worked so hard over the last couple of years to elect. All I keep hearing in response to that question is the sound of crickets…

March 7th, 2008 at 11:39 amthey’re going to overturn the overturn?
better get used to that manouevre…it’s going to be decades of legislative reversals before we’re back to 1999

It’s time to put it on the table, tell someone to put it on the table, or get the heck out of the room while they’re delivering the table.

This is sooo such a ‘cute’ concept, but ‘Hussein’ is supposed to be the middle name – here try this:
Maude Hussein Zooey — there, fixed it for ya’.
