On MSNBC this morning, anchor Monica Novotny claimed that President Bush’s impending veto of the Intelligence Authorization Bill would put “a chill” in his alliance with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Bush is vetoing the bill because of an amendment that puts the CIA’s interrogation program under the standards of Army Field Manual, which Novotny claims McCain supports.
“He doesn’t like a provision that’s been pushed by, you guessed it, Sen. McCain,” claimed Novotny. Watch it:
The problem is that Novotny has her facts dead wrong.
Though McCain has criticized the use of torturous interrogation techniques in the past, he voted against the bill that Bush is set to veto tomorrow:
Mr. McCain, a former prisoner of war, has consistently voiced opposition to waterboarding and other methods that critics say is a form torture. But the Republicans, confident of a White House veto, did not mount the challenge. Mr. McCain voted “no” on Wednesday afternoon.
Additionally, McCain has urged Bush to veto the bill. So, as often is the case, McCain has the same position as Bush when it comes to condoning torture.

reality doesn’t matter, the MSM will tell us what the truth is.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:04 pmHmm, this is sort like the Faux Noise channel falsely labeling Senator McCain as (D - Arizona). Anything to muddy the waters and confuse the public. Somehow, it won’t work in the 2008 Presidential Election in November. Folks are sick and tired of the Bush criminal regime and will not reward the Republicans by voting for McCain. Get ready for President Obama…
March 7th, 2008 at 3:06 pmHeh. So much for the “librul media”, eh?

March 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pmI hope the MSM gets the memo that McCain is *for* torture now. I know it doesn’t fit in with the story line about McCain being a man of principle and everything, but it is reality. I hope they report this latest bout of hypocrisy rather than simply parroting the “common knowledge” about this politician.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:08 pmWhenever TP posts these obvious lies by the MSM, how about putting the email addresses of these so called NEWSPEOPLE, so that we can point out the errors of their ways. Just telling us of the screwups is very frustrating. Give us a way to take action.

Where did Monica Novotny get a degree in Journalism from?
.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:13 pmThese comments are distressingly on-topic. Let me try to rectify that. Here’s a news quiz.
1. Who said “I would not accept a caucus”?
2. True or false: any resolution of the MI and FL primary mess has to be approved by Clinton.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:18 pmNew parameters, MSM, get used to them. Well read blogs catch all your crap reporting & spread your gaffs/disinformation/mistakes across the net this election season.
:)
March 7th, 2008 at 3:20 pmI didn’t think you could get a degree without some sort of organizational behavior class. I think I had to define integrity in at least three different courses.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:21 pmMedia whores lie. What else is new.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pmMcCain was against torture before he was for it.

March 7th, 2008 at 3:23 pmI’m sure this topic was never brought up at the cordial brown-nosing McCain gave Bush at the White House the other day.

March 7th, 2008 at 3:33 pmJeesh why can’t media just simply get it right? Is she:
1. Uniformed?
2. Uninterested in the truth?
3. A propagandist?
Or did she simply have an idea in her head that she thought was the truth, and she had already formulated her ideas and how she would deliver it and did not want to change?
This is the height of irresponsibility. It’s not asking too much to get the truth from the media.

March 7th, 2008 at 3:35 pm1. Who said “I would not accept a caucus
Hillary Clinton
2. True or false: any resolution of the MI and FL primary mess has to be approved by Clinton.
False. The resolution has to come from both candidates. It is not up to her.
Of course she won’t accept a caucus, because she loses caucuses. This is another reason why I am beginning to hate Hillary Clinton. She wants the Michigan delegates seated without a redo. She seems to forget that she was the only one on the ballot and that 45% of the people voted voted no to her! What would have happened if she, Obama and Edwards were on the ballot? She doesn’t want to go there, she just want to grab the prize and run even though she didn’t win the prize.
And as far as Florida is concerned, she did “win” there, but there were millions of Democrats who didn’t vote, because they were told their vote would not count. She wants to disinfranchise those voters so she can, once again, take a prize she really didn’t win.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:35 pmMcCain also voted for the Military Commissions Act of 2006, aka the Torture Bill.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:36 pmI’m wondering if Keith will bring this up on his show tonight. I’m betting on Not, because I don’t think his bosses will allow him to criticize someone from his own network. It’s too bad because this is “worst person in the world” material.

Actually, yes it is. For over 7 years they have been beaten and made irrelevant due to their corporate masters. NBC can’t piss off the administration because GE owns NBC, and GE builds submarines and jet engines. If GE wants the government to consider buying their product, they won’t adhere to journalistic standards because their customer may get mad and look elsewhere for the submarines (and jet engines, etc…)
The press has been turned into stenographers - nothing more. It also doesn’t help that there has not been an opposition party in Washington for a Loooong Tiiime!

Would Scalia think it to be absurd that McTorture isn’t qualified to be president of USTortue Inc.?
.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:38 pmI’m tired of the lying they do while looking straight at us, I’m entirely appalled at the torture they commit in our names and sick to death of having my civil liberties curtailed in the name of terrorism, for Bush, Cheney and the rest of them are the real terrorists. I watched, on youtube, a talk given by Naomi Wolf wherein she discusses the 10 steps that a would-be dictator puts into play before closing off an open society and how close we actually are to having our constitution torn to shreds before our very eyes. We have to mobilize against these insane people and take our country back in every way that we possibly can, before we’ve lost our chance.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:42 pmYeah but in this case I think she just doesn’t have the full story. She has it in her mind the old dynamic before McCain flip flopped. This is sloppy bobble heading. I wonder how much time she spent on her makeup versus updating her story?

If she is that out-of-date and misinformed, she has no business being on the TV.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:47 pmI believe Monica Novotny is just working with an old profile of McCain — she apparently hasn’t received the profile of the “new-and-improved neocon McCain” yet.
It doesn’t surprise me. Journalists have become a lazy lot.

Has Howard Dean weighed in on this yet? I thought the rules were pretty clear before the primaries started. Michigan and Florida had their early primaries KNOWING the consequences, and they held them anyway. All the Democratic candidates knew the rules as well. There shouldn’t be any discussion on this at all — and certainly not any suggestion that this has yet to be “resolved”.
Hillary attempting to get the rules changed to favor her in the middle of the game shows appallingly poor sportsmanship on her part.

March 7th, 2008 at 4:22 pm‘GREAT SATAN’ GETS STRUCK OUT
http://www.truthdig.com/ report/ item/ 20080304_the_great_satan_strike_out/
This is what the ultimate sacrifice of 4000 American soldiers has accomplished for George W. Bush and John W. McCain. Not to mention the waste of hundreds of billions, if not trillions, of American taxpayer’s dollars that is bankrupting our country. Supporting the colossal misjudgments and horrendous failures of George W. Bush and John W. McCain isn’t just irresponsible; it’s insuring that America will continue to pointlessly lose lives and treasures without accomplishing anything positive for America or Iraq. This is much, much worse than the futility, failure and waste of Vietnam; this is grievous criminal negligence that has only served to embolden and empower America’s enemies. Bush’s and McCain’s response to the terrorist attack of 9/11 has done more damage to our country than our worst enemies could have imagined or hoped for. The enemies Bush and McCain claimed are responsible for terrorism against America are now more powerful and unified than they were before Bush and McCain decided to invade and occupy Iraq. And they couldn’t have accomplished that without the aid and enablement of George W. Bush and John W. McCain. How long must Americans continue pay for the arrogance, ignorance, incompetence and failed intentions of leaders of government too flawed to recognize or admit that in their misguided efforts to address a threatening situation, they have recklessly succeeded in turning it into a disastrously impossible one?
March 7th, 2008 at 4:28 pmUrban legend also has it that McCain, Hagel, John Warner and one or two other Republicans stared Bush down a couple of years ago on another torture bill. But what they really did was talk like they were against it; and then turned around and re-wrote the bill, giving Bush the right to torture whomever he wanted. The capitulation was never reported by the media, only the grandstanding.
The Democrats just don’t know how to create a positive narrative for themselves, for the media to parrot. (It’s a gift.)
March 7th, 2008 at 4:46 pmsure is a good thing only mccain made it over to viet nam - imagine how many more friendly-fire casualties and wrecked jets dubbie could’ve tallied.
john mccain caused over a hundred deaths on the uss forrestal, and fled the scene of the crime with his admiral daddy’s help.
then, after ditching the 5th of the 5 jets he ditched (how much $ is that, btw), he caved under “enhanced interrogation techniques” and renounced his country on film for the VC.
what the hell kind of hero does those things?
real heroes give their lives to save others. mcmaverick gave others to save his own.
March 7th, 2008 at 5:15 pmMcCain is the media darling so one would expect that the truth would not get in the way of continuing to promote him in a flattering matter.
Doesn’t anybody fact-check anything before it is put out on the airwaves any more? Apparently not. Recently a poll showed that over 50% of American’s don’t trust MSM and this is exhibit A of why that is the case; they don’t deserve trust and they are showing no willingness to earn it back.

March 8th, 2008 at 12:51 amMcCain’s opposition to the ban on torture surely cancells out any kudos given him over being tortured himself. In short, he’s back to being less than a “war hero”, not having learned from his experience in Viet Nam.
