Fox’s Oliver North Blames Times Square Bombings On Pelosi And House Democrats»

Yesterday, a “shadowy figure on a bicycle” planted a small bomb that shattered the glass facade of the military recruiting station in Times Square in New York City. An investigation into the incident has begun.

Fox News’ Ollie North, however, has found his scapegoat. This morning, he said the incident may have been prevented had the House and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) granted a renewal of the Protect America Act:

Last month, of course, the U.S. House of Representatives at the direction of Nancy Pelosi went on vacation rather than voting on the Protect America Act, which provided for wiretapping of terrorists making phone calls into and out of the United States to foreign places.

And I note that it would have been a lot easier, perhaps, to find out who did this, or even to know that they were planning it, had we been able to intercept those communications.

Watch it:

North’s comments are a sad attempt to politicize a tragic bombing. In reality, surveillance that began under the law will be able to continue, and intelligence officials can initiate new surveillance against suspected terrorists by simply getting a warrant through the FISA court. The warrants can even be obtained after the surveillance has begun. North, however, conveniently failed to mention this.

Conservatives have stalled Congress from negotiating on the PAA. Last week, Senate GOP leaders blocked another extension of the PAA. In fact, the Politico reported this week that some Republicans are boycotting the negotation meetings.

North’s statements echo CNN’s Glenn Beck, who said recently, “Nancy Pelosi will end up killing Americans.”

Ollie North is so full of shit his eyeballs are brown and stinky. This is going to turn out to be some crackpot with an internet connection, not an international terror plot — cuz frankly, they’d have done a much better job of it.

    Get lost, Traitor Ollie.

If “we’re gonna’ find out soon enough” , how come you’re already making one of your typically stupid predictions on who this bomber is ?

Haven’t you 19%’ers learned enough after going 0-for-7-years in that department ?

Olly thinks/spews that the PAA would have found this bomber because the PAA provides the ability to wiretap TERRORISTS who are making telephone calls INTO and OUT OF the USA to foreign places and would have made it easier to catch this person.

THEN, Olly went on to describe this bomber as (drum roll please)… not a terrorist but instead a vandal.

So, what Olly suggests is that the American Government should be able to hide behind the smoke and mirrors of international terrorism so as to spy on domestic vandals. And for that, he blames Pelosi and the House Dems?

SINCE WHEN DOES PATRIOTISM REQUIRE IMMUNITY, OLLY?

  27. Leftside Annie Says:

20 - I was referring to Ollie North — but it applies just as well to you, Charlie.

  28. missmolly Says:

Ah, finally — the comments are open!

North’s comments might even have some chance at having teeth if:

    1) The GOP hadn’t blocked extensions of “this very important part of national security”, AND

    2) Telephone surveillance had actually stopped, AND

    3) There was any evidence at all that the perpetrators obligingly made their plans on phones that would have been tapped, if not for Nancy Pelosi.

Instead, he just sounds like Gingrich blaming the Susan Smith case on “liberals” (never mind that the father of this young woman who murdered her two children was a prominent Republican activist), or Jerry Falwell blaming pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays, and lesbians for 9/11.

This is a favorite wingnut tactic — take the disaster of the day, and find some creative way to blame your favorite boogeyman for it.

  29. The Dogfather Says:

Ollie seems to be missing the point, as always, which is why he got his a$$ kicked years ago when he ran for the US Senate in Virginia (when even Republicans wouldn’t vote for him).

The Protect America Act likely wouldn’t have done anything to prevent the Times Square bombing, which more likely than not was carried out by a domestic terrorist than an international one. As Ollie himself notes, the PAA provides for “wiretapping of terrorists making phone calls into and out of the United States to foreign places.” That seems not to apply if one is trying to prevent domestic terrorists.

Unless, of course, we’re talking about Al Qaida in Amurka who is now deploying suicide bicycle bombers…

Geez — these guys become bigger parodies of themselves every day…

This kind of terrorists actions will not stop until the america-hating liberals give in and let the Administration install mind-reading microchips in everyone’s heads, in order to detect and prevent evil terrorists thoughts.

I mean, when a terrorist can plan and execute something like this all by himself, without communicating with anybody else, well there’s a big risk that has to be dealt with, and the solution is Mind-Reading Mental Correctional Microchips.

Oh and it’s Clinton’s fault, too, for stopping research into mind-reading microchips.

Ollie North is not a credible news source to begin with. He’s scripted with the usual Fox’s News right wing talking points as well. Very good timing on this bombing. Elections,FISA law, telcom immunity etc. I fully believe this bomb was planted by someone in the CIA or some other individual under instructions from Bushco or GOP. I have no proof of this but only republicans benefit from any kind of terrorist attack as fear is their only political platform. I’m sure this pleases them as they can now use this as a tool as North uses it for his wild accusations. The fact it caused little damage shows the intent was to make a statement, not any real killings. Had terrorists really planted this I’m sure the damage would be much greater.

Here’s an idea. Oliver North and/or Glen Beck are invited to say those same idiotic comments on “Face the Nation” or “Meet the Press.” You know, a real political program with a host that will pepper them with questions; not Fox News with hosts who swallow the same kool-aid.
These guys need to have some strong rebuttal thrown in their direction. One-way conversations do no one any good.

Am I the only one that has trouble believing that a small bombing in NYC is the action of an international terrorism action of Al Q - that is the type of action that Protect America Act is supposed to apply to ??????

I don’t support the use of random violence, but it appears to me that the bombing of a recruitment office is more likely the result of someone who is disgruntled with either the treatment they received while in the military -or- someone local protesting the army. Or did I miss the news story that the bicycle rider was actually a hijacked 747 ????

Just think of all the crimes that could be avoided if we recorded and anaylzed every single phone call. Additionally, we could automate topics to collect and use this for both crime and to get personal revenge on people we don’t like. We could rig elections. Everyone could live in fear that something they said in a private conversation could appear on the evening news. What a wonderful world this could be.

it might have been prevented had Bush not decided to go to iraq based on lies and then caused the death of over 1million muslims in the process. it might have been prevented if bush wasn’t president. 9/11 might have been prevented had bush not been president because we all know bush took more days of vacation in his first term than ANY other president in the history of america and then we were attacked on 9/11. so, playing golf, fishing and biking were more important than actually reading and investigating intelligence reports that clearly stated something was happening?

yeah, we could have prevented many things if Bush wasn’t in office. not might….would have.

  99. Angry McAngus Says:

Do mean Oliver North the CONVICTED FELON who lied to Congress in sworn testimony, got caught shredding documents that would have exposed what a crook he was, illegally sold arms to Iran, arranged to have hundreds of tons of cocaine and marijuana smuggled into the US, used the profits to illegally fund the Contras (and pocketed a tidy profit for himself), then was fired by Reagan? THAT Oliver North?

It’s a fookin joke that this guy is on a “news” program telling Americans what they’re supposed to think about anything. Get it? A felon covering up for another felon by passing this horseshite.

Question: If there is another 9/11, who are you going to blame? Bush?

  103. Angry McAngus Says:

If there is another 9/11, who are you going to blame? Bush? Congress? The American people?–Southern Man

IF THERE IS another 9/11 how about blaming the perpetrator? Because the last one, we blamed Osama bin Laden and Al qaeda, hiding out in Afghanistan, and their Saudi terrorist pilots. Then suddenly we’re in a holy war based in Iraq against, presumably, any “terrorist”, including the “home grown” variety, which is why Bush needs to shred the Constitution to protect us. So I can perfectly well see where North is coming from blaming Democrats that won’t grant “telcom immunity. And like I said, if North’s lips are moving . . .

  104. DRxJ Says:

Ollie North? Ollie North? Why does that name ring a bell?
Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North secretly diverted to the Nicaraguan Contras millions of dollars in funds received from a secret deal - the sales of anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles to Iran - in spite of Reagan’s public pledge not to deal with the nation.

Ahh yes, that Ollie North! Also the one who approved of transporting cocaine and other drugs to the USA to finance the rebels.

    Yeah, he’s trustworthy!

  105. OxyCon Says:

Clearly we need a lawmaker to immediately work on legislation which would force all bicycle owners to register with the FBI and undergo fingerprint and retina scanning. The bill should be called the “Keeping Americans Alive From Deadly Bicycle Bombers Protection Act If You Don’t vote For It You Hate Jesus”.

  106. sacopenapa Says:

Oliver North is the criminal involved in the Iran-Contra scandal! The USA was arming paramilitary terrorist milicias in Nicaragua, thus supporting terrorism. Negropont knows all about it! The US is doing exactly the same today in Colombia! they are arming paramilitary terrorist milicias! That is what the USA does… it supports terrorism! They are the first one to name the ‘terrorism’ of others, but they never name their own! Oliver North you are a criminal!

  108. Dragonmetal Says:

missmolly brought up a great point earlier. Does anyone really think that terrorists would openly discuss their plans in emails or over the phone? This should be brought up any time someone begins squawking about how we have to violate the 4th amendment to keep the country safe.

Question: If there is another 9/11, who are you going to blame? Bush? Congress? The American people?

    Comment by Southern Man — March 7, 2008 @ 3:08 pm

Obviously the ones to blame are the people who hijacked the airplanes and flew them into heavily occupied buildings. Despite some creative conspiracy theories, I don’t believe that Bush controlled those airplanes.

However, an argument can be made for Bush as an indirect player with a bit more influence on the situation than pagans, feminists, and gays — especially since there is now evidence that telecoms had been engaged in warrantless wiretapping for this administration since before 9/11. If warrantless surveillance is so darned wonderful, how come it didn’t prevent the 9/11 attacks?

Just like I don’t blame Bush for Katrina slamming into the Gulf Coast. Bush doesn’t have the power to create a hurricane. But I believe he does share some of the blame for the abysmal government response to the situation.

Is Bush the only one to blame for either 9/11 or Katrina? No. I think in both cases, there’s plenty of blame to go around. But my point is that blaming Bush as a factor in each with some basis for the blame is a bit different from blaming gays and abortionists.

    Comment by Dragonmetal — March 7, 2008 @ 4:13 pm

I have been saying this for a long time. Terrorists prefer using untraceable methods of communication, such as those pre-paid disposable phones. Buy them with cash, use them, throw them away. If the powers that be were truly interested in (or worried about) thwarting terrorist plans, they would be coming up with a way to track those and listen in on them.

Another thing that bothers me is how Bushco constantly claims that WARRANTLESS surveillance is so necessary, as if getting warrants is a problem. I can’t imagine any scenario in these times where a warrant to spy on a possible terrorist would be refused. Even if there was some urgency involved, there’s a window where you can spy now and get the warrant later.

No, I suspect that Bushco needs to have warrantless wiretapping in his toolbox so he can spy on parties for which he would never get a warrant. Such as his political enemies. This seems to be far more important to him than catching terrorists.

Obviously, that’ why the pre-9/11 ‘wiretapping’ was good for absolutely nothing.

    >And who planted the bomb Ollie?

wouldnt surprise me in the least. they are desparate, absolutely desparate, to try and intimidate congress into passing telecom immunity, and i wouldnt be at all surprised to see some false flag attacks to try and gather support to protect the telecoms. if these lawsuits go forward and it comes out that they are running thier search engines through every single email sent by anyone in america, alot of people will go to jail and thier plans for future surveliance of the entire us population will be ruined. fortunately, i dont think this immunity will survive consitutional muster even if it passes congress…. right now, it looks like the Hoetling (??) vs ATT suit in the civil liberty respecting 9th circuit has the best chance of scoring a devasating blow against the criminals in the telcom industry who are aiding and abetting the violation of our consitutional right to be free from arbitrary search and seizure.

Their wanting to be allowed to do warrantlesss searches has nothing to do with them wanting to spy on terrorists.. they want to be able to data mine, keyword seach, have access to, and run pattern algorithms on every single peice of communication everyone in the country utlizies..thats thier ultimate goal, and its exactly the sort of thing that would have the founding fathers rolling in their graves..

Did Ollie mention that the Democrats wanted to extend the PAA and BushCo refused?

I don’t guess anyone at Fox News brought that up.

  130. judyinnm Says:

I blame George Bush, Jr. Because he really is to blame for everything bad that has happened in the world, over the past 7 years.

He was elected by a majority of one, disenfranchising the rest of the citizenry. He ignored warnings, and allowed the terrorist thing on 9/11.
He went to war against a country just because the had our oil under their soil, causing deaths of countless numbers of innocent people. His war has ruined our economy. His demagoguery prevents any progress towards any improvement in the lives of people all over the world. And he is simply the worst thing to happen to this world since time inmemorial.

  131. Marie Says:

These escaped felons from the Reagan administration have brass balls to say the things they do in criticism of others.

  132. ennealogic Says:

Does anyone even listen to Ollie? Does anyone even care? This liar and double dealer and law-breaker is contemptible, and I fail to understand why he gets his ugly mug on the telly in any case.

Go bury yourself on a horse farm somewhere in rural Virginia, Ollie, and rot with the rest of the dung.

  133. theswan Says:

  136. Willy Says:

Ollie North: traitor and convicted felon. No reason to give any weight to anything said by someone of that caliber.

    Pass the popcorn, please.

  137. Bad Eye Says:

And I note that it would have been a lot easier, perhaps, to find out who did this, or even to know that they were planning it, had we been able to intercept those communications.

    The key word being perhaps.

Of course, Ollie doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to knowing whether or not any communications took place prior to the bombing.

As well, this administration has advised America that the wiretapping takes place only on “known or suspected” terrorists. Is Ollie suggesting what we already suspect, that everyone is being wiretapped?

  138. williamf Says:

North, what are doing out? I thought you were in prison for the Contra thing? Yeah, we are gonna believe you alright, I think you and your buddies are trying the swift boat crap again. Forget it.

  139. Keith Says:

Ollie, 911 might not have happened if we had the President Gore administration! What was worse: the damage done to the recruiting office or 9/11?

Ollie, isn’t it true that you planned to sell about $1 billion worth of weapons illegally to the terrorist Islamic fundamentalist state of Iran under the Ayatollah Khomenhi—–but that it was stopped after a couple hundred $ worth, when two plane crashes revealed what was going on?

Ollie, isn’t it true that the profits from this illegal sale went illegally to a bunch of drug-running terrorists called the Contras? Didn’t your diary say they were bringing tons of cocaine into the USA?

Weren’t you convicted of a felony?

  140. Keith Says:

should be: stopped after a few hundred MILLION dollars worth of arms.

  142. brently Says:

Is everyone ready for the next “terrorist attack?” This is simply foreshadowing. They are trying to tell the dems that they are willing to do it again. Will another suspicious disaster on American soil–especially if used to call off the elections–convince you that the Cheney/Bush administration was behind 9/11, too?
