Perino: ‘White House Has Been Very Forthcoming In Putting Forward NIEs’

A new National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Iraq is scheduled to be completed this month. Yet intelligence officials are still debating whether or not to make the key judgments public, as they did with the most recent report on Iran.

During today’s White House press briefing, a reporter asked spokeswoman Dana Perino whether the White House supports keeping the new NIE classified. Perino said that the decision will ultimately be up to the intelligence community, but added, “Obviously, this White House has been very forthcoming in putting forward NIEs, as we’ve all been familiar with over the past several years.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/perinonie44.320.240.flv]

In reality, however, the White House has been less than forthcoming with the NIEs. Some highlights:

– In an internal memo last October, DNI Mike McConnell said that he believes NIEs “should not be declassified.” [Link]

– Vice President Cheney’s office attempted to manipulate the last NIE on Iran. A draft was reportedly completed in 2006, but the White House rejected it because it contained dissenting views. A former intelligence officer said, “They refused to come out with a version that had dissenting views in it.” [Link]

– Regarding the most recent NIE on Iran, former CIA officer Philip Giraldi said that “intelligence analysts have had to review and rewrite their findings three times, because of pressure from the White House.” [Link]

– After the key judgments of the Iran NIE were declassified, the White House quickly attempted to discredit them. In meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Bush said that the NIE’s conclusions on Iran “didn’t reflect his own views.” [Link]

– Prior to the Iraq war, the Air Force, Energy Department, and State Department all issued dissenting views on the state of Iraq’s progress towards a nuclear program. The White House, however, ignored these views and pushed inaccurate stories about Iraq’s alleged WMD. [Link, Link, Link]

Transcript:

Q Do you support keeping the new NIE on Iraq classified, or do you think Americans should know what’s going on?

MS. PERINO: That’s a decision that’s made, as you read in the report today, that the national intelligence community gets together, all 16 of them, and they make a determination and a judgment — and I don’t have a comment on it today.

Q Well, what is the view of the White House?

MS. PERINO: Look, I haven’t seen that — I don’t know what’s in the report. I leave it to the judgment of the intelligence community. Obviously, this White House has been very forthcoming in putting forward NIEs, as we’ve all been familiar with over the past several years.

Could it be the girl really has no clue of any of the topics she speaks of? Did the neocons pick this pretty young thing as a distraction and of an age many would feel uncomfortable asking the tough very needed questions?

    That’s a little harsh, isn’t it?

I mean, she seems perfectly capable of speaking sincerely-held mistaken beliefs, as well.

    Let’s try that again!

Q: As the majority public has wanted the US to quit Iraq since mid-2005 and that majority is now over 70%, why wouldn’t the White House release the NIE which must surely confirm the White House position that progress is being made in Iraq and that surge has worked and is still working, and thus reverse an apparently mistaken contrary public perception?

This Administration is disgusting in how it hides things from the American people. And let’s face it folks, the Clintons would be a continuation. She is hiding her tax returns even though she donated $5 mil over her own money to her campaign. She is hiding her records as First Lady even though she says her experience as First Lady makes her more qualified than Barack Obama. She is hiding her and Bill’s records of their “charity” worth more than $500 million dollars which employed key campaign staffers and to which their campaign donors have contributed tens of millions of dollars.

In contrast Barack Obama has fought for openness in government. Because of his legislation, you can find what the government pays to contractors, whose money lobbyists bundle and all sorts of other inconvenient facts about money in politics. Obama doesn’t take money from lobbyists, unlike all the others.

Obama is not perfect, but he is a lot better and smarter than the others.

    Comment by 5th Estate — March 7, 2008 @ 8:32 pm

The Surge is OVER! The Tide is now going out. Gen. Petraeus is REDUCING the number of Brigades. The Number of troops in Iraq will be going DOWN all the way to election day. The Military has no choice…they have no more fresh , well trained troops to send to Iraq.

we’ll all get to see what has worked and what is still working.

  20. Roket says:

Fine. Don’t release the NIE. We’ll read the leaked unedited version then. (It’s a good thing she’s not Pinocchio. Her nose would stretch from here to the moon.)

  21. screech says:

What a total dolt. Dana Perino is yet another sad hack working for this administration. Has there ever been another administration in history that has been able to hire as many incompetents as this one? I don’t think so.

Good luck on that. As long as we continue to give them our tax money to channel off to theIr and their friends bank accounts, we are great. Other than that…STFU.

They want our money but we are such an absolute pain in the a$$ for anything other than that.

  26. Mr. Evil says:

    Comment by Ms_Joanne — March 7, 2008 @ 11:24 pm

Let’s see. We’re force to fork over a portion of our money. We have little, if any, sayso as to how it’s spent. They don’t want to use any of it to actually benefit the citizens of this nation. They lie about it constantly. They lie about everything constantly. They tell us to be afraid on a daily basis. Millions of homeowners are losing their homes. Gas prices have already surpassed $4 per gallon in California. And not one person is doing a single thing about it. What’s wrong with this picture?

    Back under the bridge, troll.

  35. Ms_Joanne says:

I am sure there are other countries whose dictators would love to engage the Blackwater and KBR thugs once our dictator goes away (god willing!)

  36. barfly says:

“And then there’s this dispiriting story.”

    Comment by Ms_Joanne

You do know what the next step in this disgusting, ridiculous mess is, right? These properties will become gutted hulks, and religious organizations will snatch up the land for next to nothing, because they will promise the municipalities to turn them into rehabilitated housing.

  37. Above the Clouds says:

The next President of the USA, in answering their “phone call at 3:00am” ala Hillary Clinton’s commercial, will be thinking, “What George Bush Republican mess do I have to fix now?”

  38. barfly says:

  39. DieNowForPeace says:

Yea, well I’d still rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

  40. Ms_Joanne says:

At some point the churches are going to start to feel the crunch, too. Talk about a rich operation. Take money from you to enrich them. Priceless.

That’s not to say that some don’t do damned good work. But not as many as should.

  41. barfly says:

I know a great place for Blackwater to relocate: Tijuana. I’ll bet the mexicans would love to have a bunch of dumbshit gringoes doing special ops training in the hills. And the Blackwater boys could get some live-fire training.

  42. MapleStreet says:

Stupid Question: These conferences are taped aren’t they ? How come no one has done a voice stress analysis to have indications of exactly which sentences are hiding the truth ?

  43. Ms_Joanne says:

#45, don’t give them any ideas. Some of those poor people down there have to walk two hours each way to get water.

  45. barfly says:

You are OK with the judge denying the yound man’s request to join the military even though her decision was based not in law but purely on her own personal political position?

    Comment by Tracy2

I’m ok with the judge siding with the child’s legal guardian’s wishes. Something wrong with that? Let the kid reach 18 and enlist. What’s the rush? It’s not as if we’re going to leave Iraq anytime soon.

  46. barfly says:

Oops, misread Tracy’s article. Mea culpa.

But what’s the rush? He’ll be legal age soon, and able to make the decision for himself.

    Please, pretty please?

  49. Lefty Patriot says:

Not enough dead kids for you, t2? Why don’t you sign up in his place, coward.

  50. Zooey says:

Why should we “explain” the Judge’s actions to anyone, let alone an idiot troll?

If you are on the fence about making public the NIEs, read from the following link.

I have a more sinister view of what happened on 9/11. We all remember the seven minutes of silence by our little woodenhead president at that Florida pre-school and I have a theory (besides ineptness).

I believe that it is entirely possible that Bush new of the planned attack on the World Trade Center and that he and hist administration allowed the plan to go forward. Iin this scenario Bush’s advisers probably told him that the chance of these planes hitting their target were zero to none, and that the planes would miss the intended targets and hit surrounding areas instead, which was acceptable and would have provided the excuse to usurp our constitutional rights.

So, when Bush was informed that the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were hit, he knew that he had either been given very bad advice or that he had been set up by the neocons and members of his administration – to which he is now a captive.

Anyone would have been speechless under these circumstances.
