At a recent press conference, President Bush announced that he may keep the names of donors to his presidential library secret. In a Dallas News op-ed today, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) calls on Bush to make all his documents public:
Presidents begin raising these enormous sums while they are still in the White House. Disclosure of these contributors will help assure that an administration’s decisions are not being tilted toward big-dollar presidential library donors. [...]
This public access was weakened when President Bush issued Executive Order 13233 in 2001, which allows heirs of a former president to claim executive privilege even after the president’s death. [...]
I support the House-passed legislation that repeals this executive order and restores the public’s right to know.
What the?
Who’s got what on Lieberman?
Must be worried about what’s going to happen this fall, and after…
March 8th, 2008 at 1:37 pmSo this is how th McCain-Lieberman ticket will begin to distance itself from Bush?
March 8th, 2008 at 1:39 pmWhat is happening? Is the sky falling? joe LIEberman made a mild criticis of w. Who is he trying to give cover to?
March 8th, 2008 at 1:39 pmThis is just a ploy to get the spotlight on Bill Clinton to release his list of donors for his library to embarrass Hillary. It’s not hard to imagine that people who donated $500k or $1m+ to his library were grateful for something the president did – pardons, contracts awarded, etc.
But Bill and Hillary should release their tax and donor records before the general election. If there’s anything terribly embarrassing to be found in them, it would be better to know now and get behind Obama rather than lose in November.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant… for BOTH parties.
This troll would prolly self-combust in direct sunlight, leaving a greasy spot of soot behind…
March 8th, 2008 at 1:44 pmOh please Joe, don’t pretend to have integrity at this point. It’s just too funny…
~Hussein Zooey
March 8th, 2008 at 1:48 pmMust be a couple of bin Ladens on that donor list.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:49 pmIt’s a little late for Lieberman to show any integrity.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:53 pmPerhaps LIEberman realizes his little window of influence is about to close. After he managed to get himself reelected in 2006 and the Senate was so equally divided, he had tremendous clout for a while there.
But w/ this fall’s election liable to produce a a solid Dem majority in BOTH chambers, Joe’s prolly a little worried about his future.
He should be. Too bad, Joe.
March 8th, 2008 at 1:56 pmJoe needs attention, give Joe attention, he really needs it.

And so releasing the names is a bad idea, because…. ??
Not to mention your reading comprehension problems, since Lieberman clearly said “while still in office”.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:17 pmwell, no sense repeating the first question that comes to my mind,
as it’s been asked enough already… still, gotta wonder…
“… [A nation] must, above all, believe in the capacity of its own people so to learn from the past that they can gain in judgment in creating their own future.” – FDR
precisely why dubya doesn’t want the bushco, pappy included, papers
to become public… that future must include criminal proceedings…

March 8th, 2008 at 2:34 pmWhaaaaaaat?!? Lieberman is — *GASP* — disagreeing with George w. Bush over something?
Without a doubt, icicles must be forming on the doorsills of Hell e’en now…
March 8th, 2008 at 2:38 pmThis could so totally backfire.
Leiberman wants the public spotllight and to appear as a reformer . . . he’s just as ambitious as Hillary and about as subtle. He’s gunning for that VP spot and sees this as an opportunity to shoot down criticism of McCain’s ties to Bush.
Problem is, even if the neocons have been so clever as to not sink the money into the library YET, it’s in the pipes. He may earn kudos from McCain today, but tomorrow, the Obama-loving kids of the contributors are going to come out of the wood work.
The only candidate without a hand in this pie is Obama.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:43 pmOh Joe, don’t try to impress The Maverick by out-Mavericking him.
March 8th, 2008 at 2:46 pmSaddam Gin is still going on about Bill Clinton, the best president in 40 years? Wow, the stink of desperation is all over her. Still no “personal responsibility” from the goopers. What a surprise.

Umm , then how come you don’t support the House-passed legislation that bans torture , you Zionist bag of crap ?
March 8th, 2008 at 2:59 pmFrom 2-13-07 “Bush Library to Boost a Sagging Legacy
by Bill Berkowitz
“Late last year, the New York Daily News reported that “Bush sources with direct knowledge of library plans” said that “Bush fund-raisers hope to get half of the half billion [needed to build the project] from what they call ‘megadonations’ of 10 million dollars to 20 million dollars a pop.”
Half a billion dollars!? This is for a library on a Methodist campus honoring a man that just vetoed legislation banning torture.
Go figure.
Ya think some of that chunk of change might be coming from a country that circumcizes women, beheads people for expressing their thoughts and are responsible for $100+/barrel oil prices?
I’m thinking (unlike dubya), we have a right to know who’s footing the bill.
Dubya’s line of thought (the Rovian “Brain” behind this ruse), is that, if it’s a private university housing the library, it’s not subject to Freedom of Information disclosures. Shame on you SMU for buying into the sham.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:04 pmShame on you SMU for buying into the sham.

There’s a very good reason Botch chose the location he did… S&M U.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:20 pmSMU will be the first private university housing a presidential library. The rules don’t apply.
Bush likes it that way.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:32 pmI still don’t understand why there’s so much fuss. All the Bush Liberry will contain is two dog-eared copies of “My Pet Goat” and a safe. And? They won’t be able to find the combo for the safe. In fact, they’ll probably just weld the safe shut.
March 8th, 2008 at 3:38 pmWell, they certainly won’t need any space for all the emails they can’t find, huh?

March 8th, 2008 at 4:11 pmHey Rodham Gin how you getting paid if the RNC is pirating the RNC account?
March 8th, 2008 at 4:58 pmSO what is Gin saying, that Laura Bush is actually the president?
Why, if thats so, then this is the 3rd and 5th Bush term.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:59 pmAnd if we include Barbara Bush thats 6 terms for Bush.
March 8th, 2008 at 5:00 pmOh my God, say it ain’t so Liebermann, is criticizing Bush. I’m surprise that he took his lips on Bush’s ass long enough to say those words. Talking about a traitor who sold out his party for less than 20 pieces of silver now trying to fake us out with this weak attempt at criticizing Bush. Joe Liebermann is Jewish first, pro Israel second, and American last. I don’t blame him for being proud of being jewish, but one can take religion too far. When your religion causes you to put the best interest of another country ahead of your own, something is seriously wrong. And the republicans are only pro Israel because they use it as a political wedge against democrats.
The rights of people in Israel are upheld before the rights of Americans by this administration. I agree the we should remain allies with Israel, but I don’t agree with the welfare we give them every year. Why do we give them billions while we have homeless veterans, hungry people, homeless women and children right here in America? I don’t think we should be just giving other countries money bases on some outdated since of guilt. You don’t see the Germans giving Israel money. If anyone owes them it’s German and the German people.
March 8th, 2008 at 5:39 pmThis is a LIEberman doing something for George. He is setting up the straw man for George to acquiesce to, and try to come off appeasing to a “Democrat” and also appear as if he is also a provider of information as if he runs an “Open Government.” It is nothing but BullShiiit.
March 8th, 2008 at 5:56 pmGood ole Joe,

I know we are not happy with Hillary now but this is just propoganda.
Nice little bit of seeing the future…….amazing talent….based on what exactly….maybe she will do the same thing Bill did and send Jimmy Carter to the Mid East and we will have another 8 years of at least sitting at the table and the violence pretty much on hold compared to what it has been the last 7 years…….these people in power now encourage the hatred and violence.

Hey Gin Rumpy, I’m still waiting for you to explain how the definition of ” the presses” includes emails, handwritten letters, and other forms of communication that are not mass produced?
March 9th, 2008 at 12:51 amWhen will Lieberman call on Bush to make his Katrina memos and emails public…?
March 9th, 2008 at 3:54 amDon’t hold yer breath.
Must be jockeying for Vice spot.
Anyone notice that the mass media never seem to use the words dynasty and royal privilege and the like when reporting on Bush and his clan of scumbags?
March 9th, 2008 at 3:57 am(Dynasty can only be used with the Kennedys!)
Is LIEberman growing a conscience? Or is it that his CT neighbors have taken to spit on his shoes when they run into him?
March 9th, 2008 at 3:16 amI guess what they say is true:
“Even a stopped watch is right twice a day”.
Or in Joe’s case, an old calendar is right once every six years.
March 9th, 2008 at 8:09 pmThe secret libarry in Dallas. The one place you will not be able to go to and research anything of any credibility or importance. It’s all secret! This is not what the American public expects of a former public servant but apparently SMU, the religious school in Dallas has no problem having a libarry for a war criminal, a liar, a spier, a kidnapper and torturer. Ah, that good ‘ol time religion. Congratulations SMU.
March 10th, 2008 at 5:11 pmLieberman’s logic is that since Bush had to provide donors then Clinton must do the same…Look where just alike money from Middle East…Lieberman is looking forward for McCain running against Hillary Clinton…
