Lieberman calls for Bush to release library donors.

At a recent press conference, President Bush announced that he may keep the names of donors to his presidential library secret. In a Dallas News op-ed today, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) calls on Bush to make all his documents public:

Presidents begin raising these enormous sums while they are still in the White House. Disclosure of these contributors will help assure that an administration’s decisions are not being tilted toward big-dollar presidential library donors. [...]

This public access was weakened when President Bush issued Executive Order 13233 in 2001, which allows heirs of a former president to claim executive privilege even after the president’s death. [...]

I support the House-passed legislation that repeals this executive order and restores the public’s right to know.

    What the?

    Who’s got what on Lieberman?

Must be worried about what’s going to happen this fall, and after…

  2. georgia says:

So this is how th McCain-Lieberman ticket will begin to distance itself from Bush?

What is happening? Is the sky falling? joe LIEberman made a mild criticis of w. Who is he trying to give cover to?

  4. Augustus says:

This is just a ploy to get the spotlight on Bill Clinton to release his list of donors for his library to embarrass Hillary. It’s not hard to imagine that people who donated $500k or $1m+ to his library were grateful for something the president did – pardons, contracts awarded, etc.

But Bill and Hillary should release their tax and donor records before the general election. If there’s anything terribly embarrassing to be found in them, it would be better to know now and get behind Obama rather than lose in November.

Must be a couple of bin Ladens on that donor list.

  8. Jeannie See says:

It’s a little late for Lieberman to show any integrity.

  9. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Perhaps LIEberman realizes his little window of influence is about to close. After he managed to get himself reelected in 2006 and the Senate was so equally divided, he had tremendous clout for a while there.

But w/ this fall’s election liable to produce a a solid Dem majority in BOTH chambers, Joe’s prolly a little worried about his future.

He should be. Too bad, Joe.

And so releasing the names is a bad idea, because…. ??

Not to mention your reading comprehension problems, since Lieberman clearly said “while still in office”.

  18. rockyroad says:

    This could so totally backfire.

Leiberman wants the public spotllight and to appear as a reformer . . . he’s just as ambitious as Hillary and about as subtle. He’s gunning for that VP spot and sees this as an opportunity to shoot down criticism of McCain’s ties to Bush.

Problem is, even if the neocons have been so clever as to not sink the money into the library YET, it’s in the pipes. He may earn kudos from McCain today, but tomorrow, the Obama-loving kids of the contributors are going to come out of the wood work.

The only candidate without a hand in this pie is Obama.

  23. rockyroad says:

From 2-13-07 “Bush Library to Boost a Sagging Legacy
    by Bill Berkowitz

“Late last year, the New York Daily News reported that “Bush sources with direct knowledge of library plans” said that “Bush fund-raisers hope to get half of the half billion [needed to build the project] from what they call ‘megadonations’ of 10 million dollars to 20 million dollars a pop.”

Half a billion dollars!? This is for a library on a Methodist campus honoring a man that just vetoed legislation banning torture.

    Go figure.

Ya think some of that chunk of change might be coming from a country that circumcizes women, beheads people for expressing their thoughts and are responsible for $100+/barrel oil prices?

I’m thinking (unlike dubya), we have a right to know who’s footing the bill.

Dubya’s line of thought (the Rovian “Brain” behind this ruse), is that, if it’s a private university housing the library, it’s not subject to Freedom of Information disclosures. Shame on you SMU for buying into the sham.

SMU will be the first private university housing a presidential library. The rules don’t apply.

    Bush likes it that way.

  26. pete says:

I still don’t understand why there’s so much fuss. All the Bush Liberry will contain is two dog-eared copies of “My Pet Goat” and a safe. And? They won’t be able to find the combo for the safe. In fact, they’ll probably just weld the safe shut.

Well, they certainly won’t need any space for all the emails they can’t find, huh?

Why, if thats so, then this is the 3rd and 5th Bush term.

  35. Xisithrus says:

And if we include Barbara Bush thats 6 terms for Bush.

  36. The Shadow says:

Oh my God, say it ain’t so Liebermann, is criticizing Bush. I’m surprise that he took his lips on Bush’s ass long enough to say those words. Talking about a traitor who sold out his party for less than 20 pieces of silver now trying to fake us out with this weak attempt at criticizing Bush. Joe Liebermann is Jewish first, pro Israel second, and American last. I don’t blame him for being proud of being jewish, but one can take religion too far. When your religion causes you to put the best interest of another country ahead of your own, something is seriously wrong. And the republicans are only pro Israel because they use it as a political wedge against democrats.

The rights of people in Israel are upheld before the rights of Americans by this administration. I agree the we should remain allies with Israel, but I don’t agree with the welfare we give them every year. Why do we give them billions while we have homeless veterans, hungry people, homeless women and children right here in America? I don’t think we should be just giving other countries money bases on some outdated since of guilt. You don’t see the Germans giving Israel money. If anyone owes them it’s German and the German people.

  37. 99Luf Balloons says:

This is a LIEberman doing something for George. He is setting up the straw man for George to acquiesce to, and try to come off appeasing to a “Democrat” and also appear as if he is also a provider of information as if he runs an “Open Government.” It is nothing but BullShiiit.

I know we are not happy with Hillary now but this is just propoganda.

Nice little bit of seeing the future…….amazing talent….based on what exactly….maybe she will do the same thing Bill did and send Jimmy Carter to the Mid East and we will have another 8 years of at least sitting at the table and the violence pretty much on hold compared to what it has been the last 7 years…….these people in power now encourage the hatred and violence.

The secret libarry in Dallas. The one place you will not be able to go to and research anything of any credibility or importance. It’s all secret! This is not what the American public expects of a former public servant but apparently SMU, the religious school in Dallas has no problem having a libarry for a war criminal, a liar, a spier, a kidnapper and torturer. Ah, that good ‘ol time religion. Congratulations SMU.

  49. army193 says:

Lieberman’s logic is that since Bush had to provide donors then Clinton must do the same…Look where just alike money from Middle East…Lieberman is looking forward for McCain running against Hillary Clinton…
